BAF Phoenix model 1065 - medium-tonnage truck

Home Brands BAW BAW Fenix 1065 (33460)

BAW Fenix 1065 (33460) is a small medium-duty truck for urban conditions. Production was always carried out at home in China, and in 2008, assembly for Russian consumers was organized in the city of Ulyanovsk. The Fenix 1044 and Tonik 33463 models are produced in the same city.

In 2010, the truck underwent a slight restyling and changed its name to 33460. In 2011, the car was further modified, but with significant changes. The car differs from its counterparts in its longer wheelbase, larger body compartment and higher load capacity.

Among all the small line of BAW, this one is the most popular.

Appearance

When we talk about truck design, we most often think about the cab. In this case, the BAF Phoenix 1065 cabin is all-metal and equipped with a tilting system for access to the engine. The cabin is simple in design, there are few chopped shapes and generally some unique design solutions.

The front end received almost square halogen headlights in the center connected to a rectangular radiator grille with two openings. Hinges for the huge rear view mirrors are set into the front section above a small stamping line at the top. The simple bumper is equipped with additional lights.

The sidewall attracts with massive glass, which gives high visibility. Otherwise, everything is simple, there is a similar stamping as the front end, a small additional turn signal, an unpainted door handle and the same arch.

At the rear of the BAW Fenix 1065 there is a cargo platform with two folding sides on the side; the front side, of course, does not fold down, and it is significantly higher than the others. The dimensions of the platform are 5.2 by 2.1 meters. If desired, you can pull out an awning, or purchase a van, dump truck or crane version.

Cabin options:

  • Y – regular cabin with 3 seats;
  • F – one-and-a-half cabin with 3 seats and one berth;
  • E – double cabin, not sold in Russia.

Body dimensions:

  • length – 6990 mm;
  • width – 2245 mm;
  • height – 2250 mm;
  • wheelbase – 3860 mm;
  • ground clearance – 200 mm;
  • front track – 1700 mm;
  • rear track – 1530 mm.

Car modifications

The popularity of the BAV Phoenix 1065 vehicle is also ensured by the fact that a lot of different modifications are installed on the chassis of this vehicle. This implies the ability to operate the vehicle not only with a body platform.

Based on the BAF Phoenix, you can install such body options as an evacuation device, a manufactured goods or insulated van, a dump truck, a tank, a manipulator crane, etc.

Due to the fact that BAF Phoenix can be used in a variety of ways, it can be purchased for various purposes of future use.

Salon 1065 (33460)

It’s worth noting right away that insulated models with additional sound insulation of the hood were assembled on the Russian market. Inside the BAF Phoenix 1065 there are three seats - a driver's seat and a sofa for two passengers, they are covered with simple fabric.

A 2-spoke steering wheel and an instrument panel consisting entirely of analog gauges and one low-information on-board computer are used. The car does not have electric windows, nor does it have a standard radio; there is a prepared space for the radio.

The design of the console in the center is simple and completely replicates the Fenix 1044 model. There are three levers for adjusting the heater, and to the left are buttons for activating the fog lights and hazard warning lights. There is also a cigarette lighter.

The truck has ABS, which can be turned off with a button to the left of the steering wheel if necessary.

Trucks always have more useful technical information than regular cars. The car was always equipped with only one diesel engine. The unit, with a 3.2-liter volume, 4 cylinders and a turbine, produces 120 horsepower and 320 H*m of torque from 2100 rpm.

Among the interesting things about the engine are the Common Rail injection system and the cooling system for the air supplied to the turbine. The internal combustion engine is called CA4DC2-12E4 and according to its passport it consumes 16 liters of fuel in a combined cycle, while the tank holds 130 liters of diesel fuel.

The pair is always a 5-speed manual with one clutch. The torque is transmitted to the rear axle of the BAF Phoenix 1065 (33460) via an open cardan. Each transmission gear has an inertial synchronization system.

In order to transport heavy loads, an appropriate suspension is needed; in this case, a spring design with hydraulic shock absorbers is used. The suspension allows for a load capacity of almost 4 tons, which is a cool result for such small dimensions. The dual-circuit pneumatic braking system more or less copes, but the owners note that it is better to install something more powerful. Disc brakes at the front, drums at the rear with ABS.

Revival? Truck BAW Fenix BJ1065P1U62

Manufacturer: Beijing Automobile Works Co., Ltd. (BAW) (China), CKD assembly BAW Motor Corporation (Ulyanovsk) Model: BAW Фenix BJ1065P1U62 (Euro 3) Start of sales in Russia: 2008 Price: 590,500 rub. (complete with awning).

This car has a strange name - “Phoenix”. Just like a fairy-tale bird, hearing its sad song makes you want to cry. I hope that this property is not transferred to the car along with the name, however, the Phoenix bird was distinguished in mythology by its ability to be reborn from the ashes, and I would like to take this as a hint of maintainability.

LATE INTRODUCTION Usually I select cars for testing for the magazine based on two conditions - it must be a super new product or, on the contrary, the most popular model in its class. Less often, personal interest in a particular brand works. The Chinese BAW Phoenix did not fall into one of these categories, so it remained outside of our attention for a long time. This could have continued if several factors had not coincided: “Phoenixes” began to be assembled in Ulyanovsk, and in an updated version with a Euro 3 engine and a new gearbox, and these cars appeared on sale at dealers. It became indecent to further delay getting acquainted with the Phoenix, and I went to the show. Externally, the car is unpresentable. Under the decoration of a gray plastic grille and huge “crystal” headlights, the contours of the Isuzu Elf ERV TL series cabin of the 1990s are visible. The cabin interior is also very modest. Finishing materials traditional for the Chinese automotive industry - cheap plastic, plastic, linoleum. The build quality is average, but according to our standards, very satisfactory for everyday transportation. I was pleased that the entire rear panel of the cabin is covered with plastic, something you don’t often see among Chinese tribesmen. The driver's seat has only two adjustments - longitudinal movement and backrest tilt. But the steering column is adjustable over a wide range: in height and tilt. True, at the same time you need to apply a decent amount of effort to it. The ergonomics of the workplace are satisfactory - the “ears” of the Japanese original clearly stick out. The pedals are in place and the gear lever is always at hand. The instrument panel is uncluttered and easy to see; by the way, it has a standard tachometer. But for some reason they saved money on the right sun visor. A one-and-a-half seat is allocated for passengers - one sits comfortably, but two people are already cramped. If people somehow fit in the cabin, then there is nowhere to put personal belongings. The glove box is small and the door pockets are even smaller. If you like to take a thermos and sandwiches with you on the road, but at the same time you often have fellow travelers, then it is better to take a closer look at a cabin with a berth. This cannot be called a full-fledged “sleeping bag”, since the length of the shelf here is only 173 cm, and most drivers are unlikely to be able to use the additional space behind the seats for its intended purpose, but there is an excellent place for luggage, especially since there is a small space under the shelf, sufficient for the driver's belongings. However, if necessary, you can still sleep in a “sleeping bag” for the night; to do this, you need to expand the bed due to the folding seat backs, but you will still have to sleep diagonally. Almost no acquaintance with Chinese cars is complete without curious surprises in the design . I found another technical incident in the Phoenix - an incomprehensible handle under the dashboard caught my attention. The first guess is that this is the engine speed control knob... but this is Euro 3?! Turning the handle, I felt that something had opened somewhere! I had to crawl under the panel and check. It turned out that under the panel a small hatch the size of a matchbox opened... onto the street! For fresh air? Then why to the driver's left foot? Unclear…

APPEARANCES ARE DECEPTIVE! I examined the Phoenix with passion and noted that with a nominal load capacity of 4 tons, it could transport all five without damage! This is a great help in competition with such rivals as Valdai and Bychok. The carrying capacity of the BAW is higher, the standard body is longer than that of domestic long-wheelbase vehicles, but at the same time the width of the body and, naturally, the entire vehicle is smaller. This must be taken into account, for example, when placing european pallets in the body. Under the BAW cabin there is a compact turbodiesel CA4D32-12 produced by FAW. In terms of power, it is comparable to our MMZ-245, but its torque is less and is achieved at higher speeds. The updated car (do not forget that we are considering the option with a Euro 3 engine) is equipped with German (SIC!), and not Chinese, Bosch fuel equipment. In this regard, the gas pedal on the car is electronic (!). Among the major changes in the updated version, it is necessary to note the 12-volt electrical wiring instead of 24 V and, accordingly, the presence of only one battery. On the car in question, my partner and I found a standard installed power steering and a brake system with ABS. It turns out that the Phoenix bird looks much more primitive from the outside than it actually is.

WORKHORSE I didn't have the opportunity to fully test the car in action, but I got some impressions behind the wheel. The engine pulls great with plenty of power, but the engine is noisy. However, no more than other Chinese or domestic trucks of this class. Gear shifts are surprisingly easy and precise, although the lever strokes are a bit long. I didn’t even believe the sensations at first, since I already had a certain stereotype in relation to Chinese gearboxes with a cable shift mechanism, where snagging and unclear engagement are rather the norm. Against this background, the Phoenix has a simply magnificent box. I ask the representative of the dealer who provided the car if it has always been like this? It turns out that no, only this year they began to install new gearboxes, of much better quality and practically causing no complaints. The operation of the pedals is without significant comments - I already mentioned about the gas pedal that it is electronic, the clutch pedal on the BAW BJ1065 with pneumatic booster is very light and informative. The same applies to the brakes, of course, they are pneumatic and therefore at the very beginning they are a little late, but then the braking force can be dosed very accurately. When driving, an empty car is a bit harsh, partly because of the “oak” Chinese rubber. They say that under load, the smoothness of the ride improves, but it is still better to replace the tires with more acceptable ones, since there are domestic analogues (Voltyre Bree-317) in size and load. But in general, the impressions of the car were better than one might expect.

AMBITIOUS PLANS BAW brand trucks have been sold in Russia for about two years. During this time, the consumer has accumulated some experience in operating these machines, and has developed a certain attitude. The main thing that attracts this car is its price. Of the more or less decent Chinese brands, BAW is probably the cheapest. The Kaliningrad-assembled Yuejin, which are very similar in consumer qualities, are 10–15% more expensive than the Phoenix, and the more comfortable and outwardly more modern Foton are even more expensive. Against this background, many of the shortcomings of BAW are graciously forgiven by consumers, especially since there are fewer and fewer of them left. But there are also characteristic problems that cause trouble for BAW owners. So, the machine pump has a bushing instead of a bearing, and when the drive belt is overtightened, it quickly fails. Naturally, the pump begins to leak. There are a lot of grease nipples on the car, and you shouldn’t forget about them (unfortunately, even servicemen who carry out maintenance forget), otherwise problems will not take long to appear. There are complaints about faulty thermostats and low efficiency of the stove. Oddly enough, the quality and durability of a machine often depends on the specific sample that comes across. There are examples that lasted more than 100 thousand km without any problems, and which required a major engine overhaul after 10 thousand. Or is it a human factor? In any case, BAW Motor Corporation, the official distributor of the BAW concern in the Russian Federation, has plans for the future very ambitious plans to increase sales. It is soon expected to reach the level of 12 thousand modernized cars per year. It is for this purpose that assembly production was started in Ulyanovsk, and the BAW Motor Corporation itself even has its own staff of engineers involved in improving the quality of Phoenixes.

Malfunctions

The BAW Fenix 1065 brakes quickly become unusable, or rather the air pressure drops, which leads to weak braking. They say that when connecting electronics to the cigarette lighter, it cannot withstand and burns out, the same thing sometimes happens with all electrics. The problem is that the fuses remain intact, the wires burn out due to their small cross-section.

Often you have to repair the tilting mechanism; it jams after lifting. Repairing this problem is cheap, almost free, but physically difficult.

The insulation of the cabin is supposedly good, but there are many small cracks from which you can see the street. The stove does not cope well at idle, and in the summer for some reason it drives warm air into the cabin. Clearly not the best option for winter.

Features of Phoenix 1065

The BAW Fenix 1065 vehicle is a medium-tonnage truck, which in most cases is used as a vehicle for transporting goods between cities over not very long distances. This machine has a fairly similar layout to the 1055. But at the same time, the vehicle differs in certain features, among which the manufacturer identifies the following:

  • increased level of carrying capacity;
  • increasing the volume of the body compartment;
  • equipment for additional usable space;
  • increasing the length of the platform;
  • cabin expansion, etc.

Due to the above advantages, the BAW Fenix 33460 (1065) is currently more popular than the 1044 or 1055.

Price and withdrawal

The model has been discontinued and at the moment in Russia you can only buy a truck on the secondary market. The price tag is floating, for obvious reasons. You will need from 400,000 to 750,000 rubles. Is it expensive? No. There are few options on the market for this amount that could transport a load of 4 tons.

BAF Phoenix 1065 (33460) is a good light-duty truck for the money. With such a price tag, it is normal that there are problems in it, you have to come to terms with them due to the lack of competitors in this price segment.

If you want to start working in the field of cargo transportation or anything else related to trucks, then the BAW brand is one of the best options for a budget start.

Delivery conditions:

1.+-25 days delivery time for the engine from the manufacturer’s plant to the client, depending on the distance of the customer to the pre-mine warehouse in Zabaikalsk.

2. The cost of the motor is indicated taking into account delivery and customs clearance to Zabaikalsk. We will deliver the engine to a transport company in Zabaikalsk for free. The cost of logistics of the motor to the client depends on the distance from the transport company’s warehouse, volume, and weight of the cargo. On average, a 4-cylinder engine without attachments costs from 10,000 to 12,000 rubles.
