Among the progressive technical and technological solutions that were applied in the Don-680 in order to increase its performance, the following should be noted:

The feed mass is carried out according to a direct-flow pattern, with a flat trajectory. Silage or haylage moves along the technological path of the combine with a constant increase in linear speed, from the feeding apparatus to the grain grinder. Each of the subsequent accelerations is almost 2 times greater than the previous one. Thanks to this feature, the stability of the entire technological process is guaranteed when working with any of the agricultural feed crops.
The feed chopper drum has a V-shaped arrangement of 24 half-blades in a chevron arrangement. The combine's turbocharged diesel engine allows you to perform 20,112 cutting movements of the feed mass in one minute.
Four modes of cutting stems are used (3.5; 8; 20 mm), and the possibility of changing these parameters exists when the combine is directly operating from the cabin, without replacing knives and other “unnecessary movements”.
Already in the standard, basic configuration, there are now such necessary options (in forage harvesters of the past they were additional, or they were not there at all) options, such as: a rotary re-chopper of corn grain; metal detector; feed unloading accelerator; 2-sided shear beam with hardening surfacing; built-in device for mechanical sharpening of half knives.

When the metal object protection sensors are triggered, the feed supply to the chopping apparatus is immediately stopped. Removal of a foreign object dangerous to the mechanisms occurs using reverse motion.

Equipping the combine unloading device with an accelerator makes it possible to unload crushed feed at high speed. This compacts the stacking of silage when loading the body or trailer, to achieve maximum loading.

The receiving and feeding chamber of the Don-680 combine is 680 mm wide and equipped with five feed rollers.

The feed grinding drum has a diameter of 750 mm; width 646 mm and provides 838 rpm. At least one of the drum knives is in constant engagement with the shear plate, ensuring continuity of the process of formation of fine feed mass. Anti-cutting plate – with a 2-sided working surface, equipped with surfacing made of chrome-vanadium alloy. This increases its working life by 3 and a half times.

The removable rotary grain grinder that the Don-680 is equipped with plays a big role in the formation of the most nutritious corn silage. It guarantees crushing of up to ninety-six percent of waxy corn grains.

Replacement adapters for the Don-680 combine

The list of main adapters intended for harvesting various crops for the Don-680 combine is as follows: headers for harvesting coarse crops - two types; grass harvester and windrow pick-up.

Coarse headers

Headers for coarse crops (corn, sunflower, sorghum) are equipped with support-free cutting devices for a continuous cut, and differ in cutting width: there is a 4-meter header (for 6 rows of corn), and there is one with a width of 4.5 meters. Three spacer rollers and divider guides enable the Don-680 rotary headers to work with equal stability in both high-yield and low-yield areas of fields.

Grass harvester

The grass harvesting header has a five-meter working width and is designed for mowing any thin-stemmed crops. It is frontal, with a hinged and balanced part. The grass harvester is used when mowing thin-stemmed crops up to one and a half meters high.

This adapter consists of a housing, a four-bladed rake reel, a cutting device, an auger, shoes, a balancing mechanism and gear mechanisms.

The continuous cut grass header is equipped as standard with a mechanism for balancing the cutting height on uneven fields and a safety clutch that is activated at peak loads.

Roll pick-up platform

The windrow pick-up is designed for harvesting haylage. It produces a selection of wet or dried grasses that have already been mowed and formed into windrows. The pick-up has a drum-rake device, with a narrowing of the feed flow. The working width of the Don-680 pick-up is three meters. The throughput capacity of the Don-680 pick-up is 17 kg per second.

The platform and the pick-up mechanism are connected to each other by hinges. The pick-up consists of a frame, picking and pressing devices, support wheels, shield, hitch, left and right sidewalls.

The picking device consists of a shaft with holders attached to it, onto which spring teeth are bolted. The rollers are installed in the treadmill, which is mounted on the sidewall.

The pick-up, just like the grass header, is equipped with a system for copying the topography of the field surface in the longitudinal-transverse direction. Overall dimensions of the pick-up platform: length – 2.12 m; width – 3.525 m; height – 1.28 m. Structural weight, with individual spare parts package – 1.7 t.

The design includes measures to prevent feed losses when working in windy weather. The pick-up is equipped with pressure springs. The silage canopy extension provides the ability to unload into vehicle bodies or trailers with low sides and in windy weather, without any significant loss of feed mass.

Additional silage preservative system

In order to prevent over-wetting of the silage, treating it with preservatives as early as possible and distributing them evenly throughout the entire volume, an optional modern preservative application system is offered for installation on Don-680M combines.

This equipment introduces bacterial concentrates in the form of fogging, which is produced by a pneumatic spray nozzle, without additional volumes of water. The five-liter capacity of the device is enough for 10 hours of uninterrupted operation.

Design and service features

Don 680M in the stock version is supplied with a rotary header designed for collecting corn, a grass header, a mass receiving chamber and a product pick-up. The series is built according to the standard scheme for Rostselmash combine harvesters.

Main components of Don 680M:

grinding drum. The element is equipped with cutting elements installed in a V-shape. Its design is made in such a way that the knives remain in constant contact with special plates. This ensures the grinding of the plant product. The standard equipment also includes a regrinder capable of crushing about 96% of grains, ensuring compliance with current standards. The Don 680M combine is equipped with a large all-metal cabin of the COMFORT CAB category. The central location and panoramic glazing provide maximum visibility. Light tinting eliminates the appearance of glare on the glass. The steering column and driver's seat are adjusted to the anatomical features of the combine operator. The equipment elements are controlled using a special joystick located near the operator’s right hand. The operation of the main mechanisms is controlled by a computer that displays information on an LCD display. A powerful metal lid covers the top of the cabin, protecting it from falling objects. Engine and transmission of the Don-680 combine

The Don-680 combines are equipped with YaMZ-238DK-1 diesel engines with a capacity of 290 horsepower or 213 kilowatts). This is an eight-cylinder V-shaped power unit produced by the Yaroslavl Motor Plant. The turbocharging option is present in this engine, the heat exchanger is built-in. This makes it possible to generate additional power under conditions of increased loads.

The engine is located in the combine according to a modern layout - behind the cab, transversely. The transverse layout facilitates the most efficient transmission of torque to the working parts of the combine. It also ensures the simplest and most convenient access to all serviced engine components and assemblies. The overall dimensions of this motor are 1.84 x 1.045 x 1.07 m, with a weight of 1.3 tons.

The torque is removed from the crankshaft toe. The power is removed directly from the engine, which greatly simplifies the overall design and contributes to economical fuel consumption.

According to data distributed by Rostselmash, the diesel fuel consumption of the Don-680M engine is 430 g per ton of silage. And the full capacity of the fuel tank (which is 540 liters) is enough for 11 hours of full-time operation. According to the manufacturer, the specific fuel consumption of the Don-680M is the lowest among machines of this class and is within 0.43 kg per ton of corn silage.

The combine's transmission is hydrostatic. If desired, it is possible to order an all-wheel drive version of the Don-680M combine. In this case, the control wheels of the combine are additionally equipped with hydraulic motors.

Engine

The Don 680M combine is equipped with a V-shaped 4-stroke diesel unit model YaMZ 238 DK-1 (manufacturer: Yaroslavl Motor Plant). The engine has mechanical speed control, a built-in heat exchanger, direct fuel injection, turbocharged supply and liquid cooling. The unit is made on the basis of an eight-cylinder design and is equipped with a PTO mechanism that transmits rotation to attachments connected to the combine. With increasing loads, the engine is able to produce additional power.

Among the advantages of the YaMZ 238 DK-1 motor are reliability, low cost and unpretentiousness. The unit is able to operate on low quality fuel without reducing efficiency. When receiving silage, the equipment consumes 0.43 liters of fuel (average fuel consumption is 49 liters/hour). The fuel tank capacity is 540 liters, which allows you to work longer than a shift without additional refueling (about 10-11 hours).
