Transfer case Daimos for UAZ Patriot - diagram and repair

SUVs are equipped with a 2-axle drive system, which allows you to drive on soft ground or in off-road conditions. The car owner needs to know how to enable all-wheel drive on a UAZ Patriot, which can be equipped with transfer gearboxes of several types (this depends on the year of manufacture of the vehicle). Depending on the gearbox model, a lever or a rotary washer is used to shift.

Front axle structure of UAZ Patriot

The front axle of the UAZ Patriot car consists of:

Gearbox

The front axle gearbox of a car consists of a main gear and a cross-axle differential. The main gear is made in the form of two gears. The drive gear is small and mounted on the drive shaft. The driven gear is increased in size, which reduces the torque transmitted to the wheel mechanisms. The gear teeth are angled. When the unit operates, the gear teeth do not hit each other. This reduces the noise level while the vehicle is moving.

An inter-axle differential is installed inside the driven gear of the front axle gearbox. When turning a car, it allows the wheels of the same axle to rotate at different speeds. The cross-wheel differential is made in the form of bevel gears mounted on two axles. The splined part of the axle shafts is included in the cross-axle differential mechanism.

Steering knuckles

A distinctive feature of the front axle is the presence of steering knuckles. They are necessary to drive a car. To transmit torque to the wheel mechanisms, regardless of their angle of rotation, the manufacturer equipped the axle shafts with CV joints.

REFERENCE: Unlike previous models of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, the UAZ Patriot has a greater angle of rotation of the wheel mechanisms. This is achieved by installing ball joints instead of a pin mechanism.

Frame

The design of the front axle of the UAZ Patriot implies the presence of an all-metal housing that forms the gearbox housing. To ensure tightness, the gearbox housing is closed with a lid. It is installed with bolts. A gasket is installed at the junction of the cover and the gearbox housing. On the side of the wheel mechanisms, axle shaft housings are pressed into the gearbox housing.

ATTENTION: To avoid the occurrence of excess pressure in the front axle crankcase as a result of increased temperature, lubrication, the manufacturer has installed a breather valve. It communicates the axle housing with the atmosphere, preventing dust and contaminants from entering the mechanism.

Existing types of bridges

Improved bridges on UAZ

  1. Managed. This is, as a rule, the front axle of the car, equipped with either rear-wheel drive, which is outdated today, or all-wheel drive. But there is another option: in transport equipment for public utilities or agriculture, it is the rear axle that is steered, not the front axle. This type of design is divided into two subtypes.
  2. Uncut. This is a special beam equipped with a mechanism for steering knuckles, fixed on the sides; wheel hubs are placed on the knuckles. The purpose of this design is to control the rotation of the wheels while driving. The most important conditions are the lightness and strength of the continuous beam. That is why, as a rule, it is made of high-strength steel using forged technology.
  3. Split. This is already a gearbox equipped with drive shafts. The purpose of the cutting mechanism is to transmit torque to the wheels. The split bridge provides ample opportunities for vehicle maneuvering.
  4. Supportive. This design is used to increase the lifting power of the machine and acts as an additional supporting element. Without this part, a car designed to transport large cargo would simply fall apart within the first kilometer. The support device can be found in such a unique vehicle as a motor home.
  5. Continuous leader. This is a rather complex structure, consisting not only of a beam, but also axle shafts, bearings, and a differential. On the beam of this design springs and brackets are attached to secure the suspension. Thanks to the continuous drive axle, the drive wheels can rotate at different rates, in addition, the design softens the load and controls the car when cornering. Some bridge parts undergo additional processing to give them greater strength and elastic properties. Thus, the axle shafts are made of high-quality steel and then hardened with high-frequency heat.

Transfer case lever positions and their meanings

The classic transfer gearbox is controlled using a separate handle. The lever moves along a path in the shape of the letter P; there are a total of 4 handle positions. The position in which the lever is at the lower left point of the letter P is considered neutral.

When using a gearbox, you should take into account the presence of hubs in the front wheel hubs (installed at the factory until 2007, and then by the owners themselves). If there are elements on the machine, then it is necessary to first activate the drive by turning the handles on the hubs.

Positions of the gearbox control lever on the UAZ "Patriot":

The manufacturer prohibits the use of a 2-axle drive when driving on dry roads. When driving around curves in the highway or when making turns, the outer wheels travel a greater distance than the inner wheels. To compensate for this effect, a center differential is used, which is not provided on Patriot cars. As a result, the mechanical loads on the transmission components increase, which leads to the destruction of parts and abrasion of the tire treads.

Since the UAZ Patriot is directly related to the cohort of SUVs, this should imply the mandatory presence of an all-wheel drive system in the design of this vehicle. The presence of 4 driving wheels allows the UAZ Patriot to confidently overcome the most difficult obstacles with which off-road terrain is strewn.

Our article will touch on the design features of the all-wheel drive Ulyanovsk SUV. We'll also look at how the system works and how to turn on all-wheel drive.

Let's sum it up

In 2015, the Ulyanovsk SUV manufacturer made adjustments to the all-wheel drive system. Now the connection of the front wheels, that is, the control of the transfer unit, is carried out not using a lever, as we just looked at, but through electronics. In the cabin, the traditional lever has been replaced by a small regulator, which has similar functionality. If your car does not have a lever, then the front axle is engaged according to the scheme described

Any switching of the Dymos or Divgi-Warner transfer case modes on the UAZ Patriot and UAZ Pickup is performed only with the engine running. 4H all-wheel drive mode is carried out both when the vehicle is stationary and while driving in steady-state modes in a straight line, in the absence of wheel slip.

Possible malfunctions and their causes

The design of the front axle is reliable and unpretentious to operating conditions. Most malfunctions that arise during the operation of a car can be fixed by a person with minimal technical knowledge. Below are the most common faults that require unit repair. Oil leakage

The presence of grease drips indicates a violation of the crankcase seal. The cause of lubricant leakage may be a failure of the gaskets or wear of the seals. If a malfunction is detected, it is necessary to replace worn gaskets or seals.

When installing, the gaskets must be treated with sealant.

Increased noise

Loud noise during operation of the unit may indicate wear of the gears or bearings. To troubleshoot problems, you will need to disassemble the unit. Failed parts must be replaced with new ones.

Deterioration of lubricant quality

The cause of strong noise during operation of the unit may be poor quality of lubricant. It is necessary to regularly change the lubricant in the gearbox housing. Regular use of the vehicle for off-road driving or fording can cause water to enter the crankcase. Water prevents the rotating parts of the mechanism from being lubricated, which can lead to complete jamming.

Engine UAZ 31519

The manufacturer equipped the model with a four-stroke gasoline engine.

Power unit characteristics:

  • Type of power unit – gasoline four-stroke;
  • Number of working cylinders – 4;
  • Total engine volume – 2890 cm3;
  • The arrangement of the working cylinders is in-line vertical;
  • Formation and supply of the fuel mixture - carburetor;
  • Number of valves – 4 intake and 4 exhaust;
  • The location of the camshaft is lower;
  • The power of the power plant at 4000 rpm is 84 horsepower.

The motor works well in various conditions. The forced-type liquid cooling system allows the car to be used both in cold and hot seasons. For quick warm-up in winter, the cooling system is equipped with a thermostat. It determines the circulation circle of the coolant depending on its temperature.

The engine is started by an electric starter. It is installed on the clutch housing. The starter is equipped with a retractor relay that engages the drive gear with the flywheel of the power unit. The starter is controlled remotely using the ignition switch.

The manufacturer equipped the UAZ 31519 engine with a combined lubrication system. Oil under pressure lubricates the parts of the crank mechanism. The pressure in the system is carried out by a gear-type pump. The parts of the gas distribution mechanism are lubricated by spraying oil under pressure. The oil can be cleaned with a removable filter element.

The engine of the UAZ 31519 car has fuel consumption per 100 km of 11 - 13 liters. When driving aggressively or off-road, fuel consumption may increase.

How the all-wheel drive system works

There is no doubt that all-wheel drive is a very pleasant bonus for the owner of any car. The advantages in cross-country ability and stability on slippery surfaces are obvious here. However, such a drive can present the owner of a UAZ Patriot with some unpleasant moments. The first of them is an increase in fuel consumption.

Let's talk about the advantages, since there are many more of them compared to the negative aspects.

The disadvantages include the complexity of the design, although this is a purely subjective aspect, because for most technically savvy owners, the all-wheel drive UAZ Patriot does not seem like anything special in terms of design.

Let's look at what types of all-wheel drive systems are most common here.

In the UAZ Patriot, the developers used precisely the second type of system, that is, the all-wheel drive mode can be activated manually.

This scheme has a number of advantages, namely:

How does the device work? The main role in the all-wheel drive system of the UAZ Patriot is assigned to the cardan, with the help of which rotation is transmitted to the rear wheels directly through the rear axle. This is a single-wheel drive mode, because the front wheels are not yet connected and have the “status” of driven wheels. Below we will look at how to enable all-wheel drive.

Repair and maintenance of the front axle of the UAZ Patriot

For normal operation of the unit, it is necessary to carry out regular maintenance. To do this, it is necessary to visually inspect the housing for lubricant leaks.

The manufacturer recommends changing the lubricant after every 30,000 km. When using the machine in extreme conditions, this figure is reduced.

If it is necessary to repair the front axle of the UAZ Patriot, the unit should be disassembled. You can disassemble the front axle without removing it from the car. Disassembly is carried out as follows:

After completing these steps, the front axle gearbox components will be available for replacement. Assembly of the unit is carried out in reverse order. To facilitate the repair procedure, it is necessary to use the design diagram of the UAZ Patriot front axle.

From the above it follows that the front axle of the UAZ Patriot improves the vehicle’s off-road performance. The design of the unit makes it reliable and unpretentious to the conditions of use. For normal operation of the mechanism, regular maintenance is necessary.

Disassembly

The front axle requires regular inspection and maintenance. Maintenance consists of adjusting bearings and steering knuckles. From time to time it is necessary to change the lubricant in them. If you notice that some part is behaving unpredictably or incorrectly, do not be afraid to take on the repair of the front axle. Armed with useful information, patience, and tools, you'll be sure to get the job done.

First you need to remove the front axle, for which you should place bricks or blocks under the rear wheels of the car to make it more convenient to work. Then we remove the pipelines; they are attached to a flexible hose, going to the brake devices. We unscrew all the nuts securing the shock absorbers, as well as the bolts connecting the drive gear to the driveshaft. We disconnect the rod from the bipod, remove the stepladders, pads and gaskets.

Dismantling the front beam

Now you need to slightly raise the front bumper of the car. The next, most important stage of work begins - dismantling the front axle.

  1. Remove the wheels by unscrewing all the nuts.
  2. We dismantle the bipod rod.
  3. Remove the brake drums and wheel release clutches.
  4. Then you need to disconnect the inner ring and lock washer by straightening the edges of the so-called lock washer.
  5. The next stage is the disassembly of wheel hubs, brake flaps and steering knuckles.
  6. Unscrew the ball joint and steering linkage rod.
  7. Disconnect the steering knuckle housing and the gasket set.

After disassembling the front axle is completed, thoroughly wash the parts and inspect them in the light to find damage. If you notice even the slightest crack or wear, do not spare the part, feel free to discard it and install a new one. The main thing is not to throw away good nuts and spare parts along with an unnecessary element, so you should always have order in your garage.

All-wheel drive on the UAZ Patriot: how to turn it on?

The UAZ Patriot belongs to the SUV class, and it follows that all-wheel drive on all four wheels must be a mandatory addition. Indeed, the SUV is equipped with such a function that gives it the opportunity to get out of any puddles, swamps and other types of obstacles encountered off-road. It is this addition to the SUV that will be discussed in this material. Let's look at how all-wheel drive works and how to turn it on correctly so as not to harm the car's structure.

On the Patriot, unlike the Niva, you sometimes need to drive forward 3-4 meters if the full one does not turn on or off - and everything works out. At slow speeds with the clutch pressed and the brake not pressed. It is almost never possible to turn it on/off completely while standing still.

But the lowered one can and should be turned on and off in the same way as on the Niva, i.e. on a stationary car.

What you say is correct, the Niva always has all-wheel drive. I mean the general operation of the transfer case; in the Niva, any position, both locking and low, turned on without problems
