Massey Ferguson tractors: functionality, reliability and comfort
Whatever model of Massey Ferguson tractor we are talking about, we can say with one hundred percent certainty that it will be the most technologically advanced, productive, reliable and comfortable machine that will become a universal assistant.
A little history
The company was founded in 1847 by Canadian farmer Daniel Massey, and its first products were mechanized threshing machines.
Developing the production and repair of agricultural equipment, the company regularly won gold medals at international exhibitions. In 1891
it merged with a parallel developing competitor, the Harris company, thereby gaining unconditional leadership on a global scale.
The first mass-produced tractor was designed and released in 1930, and it was many years ahead of its time. Since then, this trend has continued and the company is always several steps ahead of all competitors.
All this time, tractor manufacturing technologies have not only been improved - the company’s engineers are developing and introducing completely new concepts into production, and their inventions concern each unit and each mechanism separately.
But Massey-Harris began its triumphal march in the field of tractor manufacturing after acquiring the successful tractor business Harry Ferguson Limited, founded by the brilliant self-taught engineer Harry Ferguson. Already since 1930
its tractors began to be equipped with a three-point linkage mechanism for connecting attachments, which were raised and lowered using hydraulic force. It turned out to be so effective that since 1950
this system was adopted as a single world standard.
Their merger took place in 1953, in 1957 the company changed its name to Massey Ferguson and the famous “Three Triangles” became its logo. And since 1958, the modern history of the company began, which has centuries-old traditions and experience in its baggage.

MF 8690 Review | Review of agricultural machinery
Unlike the Fendt, the MF 8690 tractor can set acceleration modes for each function (pedal, reverse, cruise control, etc.) as well as adjusting the maximum load for traction and PTO work. We liked this as well as the ability to adjust the speed range in driving mode with the accelerator pedal, even separately for the “hare” and “tortoise”. Adjustment with a potentiometer with a rotary slider instead of a lever also has negative sides: when maneuvering, it is impossible to intuitively and quickly return to a lower value.
But MF offers the opportunity to simply take over the functions of the accelerator pedal using a manual control lever, which is convenient not only when loading, but when pressing or transporting. The fact that two PTO speeds are currently possible - 540E and 1000 - upset us a little, but 1000E should also to appear. We were also pleased with the ability to program an external control key. In this case, when the power take-off shaft is connected, the speed memory device is activated.
The software of the tested candidate, including the lifting mechanism and hydraulics, was constantly improved and updated with new versions during the test. The lift performance of 8,630 daN obtained at the DLG test center is quite good. The controls, already familiar to MF, remain unchanged compared to the previous 8400 series. The thrust system of our 8690 corresponds to category III, because for category IV there are not yet (currently) enough necessary tools. The hydraulic oil lines are separated from the gearbox, the hydraulic equipment is complete with up to 9 control devices (6 at the rear, 3 at the front, 5 or 2 as standard). A fairly large number of valves are controlled in various ways. So, for example, to activate the time control function, you need to pull the small cross-shaped lever back all the way, but you don’t need to do this forward.
The upper hydraulic link is fitted as standard in Germany and is operated from both rear wings using control buttons (but overrides the control of the first valve on the joystick). Our test candidate's maximum oil supply of 193.2 liters (via three control devices) is, as well as its hydraulic power of 56.3 kW, among the average in this power class. Since January 2009, MF chassis have been produced in gray, the signature color of Agco Corporation. Narrower frames provide greater wheel turning. And in fact, our candidate requires 13.90 meters to turn, which is much less than competitors in this power class (track width: 194/206 cm, wheelbase: 310 cm, tires: 620/75 R30 and 710/ 85 R38).
Finally, 2.15 m tires began to fit (the 8480 had a limit at 2.05). Ballasting is also good: up to 2 tons of additional ballast can be mounted on the rear axle rims. With a weight of 11.7 tons (with one ton of wheel weights), the payload was in the range of 6,300 kg, which corresponds to the average value for this class of tractors. The MF 8690 features a new cabin, which, according to Massey Ferguson, is 28% larger than its predecessor. Instrument panel "Datatronic CCD". Ergonomics leave much to be desired and have not changed.

Features of the device and operation
- The Massey Ferguson MF8600 tractor has a heavy-duty diesel engine with additional systems that ensure its smooth operation. Thus, among the most significant systems, we note the latest generation Common Rail technology, which is responsible for unlocking the potential of the internal combustion engine - we are talking about the rational use of the fuel mixture and high environmental performance. The engine is equipped with a liquid cooling system for efficient ventilation of all internal combustion engine components. For reliable operation of the engine in harsh seasons, a pre-heater is provided, which eliminates problems when starting the internal combustion engine. Engine power is 272 horsepower and torque is 1540 N/m. A large range is ensured by a spacious fuel tank with a volume of 690 liters.
- The power plant is coupled with an electronically controlled Dyna VT automatic transmission. Gears are switched in a virtual (continuously variable) mode and, in fact, this gearbox is an analogue of a CVT car gearbox. A special feature of the box is the presence of a dynamic control system, which controls the transition to increased or decreased speed depending on the degree of load. The gearbox fully reveals the potential of the power plant and facilitates acceleration of up to 38 km/h in urban transport mode. The transmission (gearbox) operates without delay and with minimal vibration.
- The power of the front linkage is such that it is designed for a lifting capacity of up to 5 tons. This is facilitated by a productive power take-off with speed modes up to 1000 rpm. As for the rear power take-off, its speed modes can be adjusted within the range of 500-1000 rpm. The main hydraulic pump has a capacity of up to 200 liters per minute (or 175 l/min in nominal mode). The three-point hitch system complies with traction categories 3 and 4, in accordance with approved standards and regulations.
- The relatively compact dimensions of the tractor allow it to work in difficult off-road conditions - on muddy soils, in ruts, in deep snow, and it can also overcome fords and 30 percent inclines without fear of slipping and slipping. By the way, to prevent slipping, the car is equipped with wide-profile tires with deep tread and thick rubber that cannot be punctured. In addition, we note the presence of powerful motor protection, as well as all-wheel drive and center differential lock - already in the basic configuration. Together with these components, the machine is designed to overcome all kinds of obstacles. In addition, this is facilitated by high ground clearance, minimal body overhangs and an extended service interval. The turning radius of the tractor is 8.4 meters, which makes it possible to move in hard-to-reach areas and, if necessary, make a turn.
- The Massey Ferguson MF8600 tractor received a multifunctional cabin, finished according to modern standards and regulations approved in the USA and the European Union. We are talking about a reinforced safety cage, which is added to the cab to increase operator safety - for example, in the event of a tractor rollover. In addition, we highlight the following ergonomic features of the cabin: a wide glass area for 360-degree visibility, ideally located instruments, buttons and switches, as well as the ability to organize the workplace by adjusting the driver's seat and steering column. In addition, we will add a few basic components here - first of all, an air conditioner and a heating system that guarantee comfortable coolness or heating of the interior depending on the time of year. To make the driver less tired and able to work longer, the developers decided to equip the cabin with multi-layer heat and sound insulation panels to reduce noise and vibration to a minimum. Due to this, the driver is less distracted and focused on work. Thus, it was possible to increase labor productivity.
SCR TECHNOLOGY
The updated engine of the MF 8700S series tractor corresponds to a higher Tier 3 exhaust gas environmental class. Thanks to the use of SCR technology (AdBlue / urea injection), the full power potential is used, the new product also received a high-tech EPM (Electronic Power Management) solution, which automatically provides an additional increase in power 15/20 hp (depending on the tractor model) due to special engine firmware when working circumstances require it (for example, working with a PTO, transport work at speeds above 20 km/h). The new engines are reliable, easy to maintain and have high fuel efficiency.

- Yaroslav, Lipetsk. Overall, I liked the car; it has a rich basic package and high performance. I would like to note the impressive characteristics of the cabin, in which comfort and convenience prevail - primarily due to ergonomic buttons and switches located as close as possible to the driver. I didn’t like the efficiency of the air conditioning and heating systems, which take a long time to cool/heat the interior due to the large wheelbase. But on the other hand, the interior is very simple, and you can quickly adjust the workplace to suit you - for this purpose, adjustments are provided for the seat and steering wheel. Cross-country ability is excellent. The wheels do not dig into the muddy ground, and the tractor itself moves confidently on uneven surfaces. Without any problems, you can harrow, hill up, and process virgin soil. High-capacity attachments can be connected. For this purpose, the machine is equipped with a productive three-point hitch system.
- Ruslan, Belgorod. The Massey Ferguson MF8690 is a very productive tractor, but too expensive to operate for a long time. The machine has been in operation for eight years now, and the costs for it are simply gigantic - all due to the fact that many spare parts must be ordered from abroad. This applies even to such small parts as wheel bearings and other suspension elements. It is advisable to order original parts, including branded consumables, otherwise an incompatibility problem may arise. The electronics are often capricious; various errors occasionally appear on the dashboard that are not actually there. For example, overload protection is triggered, after which the mounted implement may stop, and after a few seconds everything will return to its place. Fuel consumption is enormous, and the engine is demanding on the quality of fuel. The cabin is relatively quiet, you can talk in a whisper.
Assessment of professional suitability
While the first tractor started in the field, we ran to find out the expectations of the Zarechnaya team. The director of the enterprise says that both machines are good and have similar characteristics, the result will be known after the tractors have driven in.
“I am inclined to think that Massey will win, because this model is quite well-known and in demand in the regions. And Deutz is the last series, not even “tested” yet,” agro director Alexey Nosik makes his preliminary forecast. He said that Zarechny’s fleet includes both imported and domestic equipment.
The chief engineer of the agricultural company, Alexander Khorolsky, is generally convinced that Ukrainian-made equipment is quite reliable and is not inferior to imported analogues. Regarding the equipment being tested, he said the following:
“Both tractors are good in terms of performance, but the Deutz has more bells and whistles that our machine operators simply don’t need,” notes chief agricultural engineer Alexander Khorolsky. According to him, previously the norm for fuel consumption for arable land was 20 l/ha, but now new technology makes it possible to reduce this figure to 16 l/ha. In addition, the specialist notes that the Deutz needs to be serviced more often.
“We already have a similar model at our enterprise; the oil in it needs to be changed twice as often, and the latest maintenance turned out to be extremely costly,” notes the chief engineer. However, he supports Alexey Nosik in the opinion that it is too early to talk about results, the technique must prove itself on the field.
