The report about annual production in Russia of up to 25 thousand IVECO Daily is not a joke. And with such volumes, Daily may soon become one of the leaders in the domestic market for small and medium-duty vehicles. What do we know about this car? It turned out to be almost nothing!

Just what you need!

I went to Nizhny Novgorod to Samotlor-NN to find out what kind of cars would be assembled in Russia, in what configurations and modifications, modestly believing that in the process of preparing production, Samotlor workers probably have several different IVECO Daily on hand. my expectations were justified; directly on site I was able to choose for review the IVECO Daily 50C15V panel van with a wheelbase of 3950 mm and a three-liter diesel engine with a power of 146 hp. It is expected that this particular configuration will be most in demand among our carriers in the minibus or panel van version. True, the total weight of this van is about 5 tons, and to drive it you already need a category “C” license, which can become some kind of obstacle for private owners with a “passenger” license.

In general, the IVECO Daily lineup is quite specific. We are accustomed to the fact that the total weight of European light-tonnage vehicles usually ends at around 3.5 tons. And the Daily, the smallest representative, has a total weight of 2.9 tons, and the largest vehicle in the range weighs 6.5 tons with cargo. As a result, the heaviest IVECO Daily versions with a payload capacity of 4.2 tons are being introduced into the medium-duty truck segment. It turns out that Daily will compete not only with the domestic GAZelle, but will also enter into confrontation with Bychki and Valdai.

Moreover, IVECO Daily is not some refined van with front-wheel drive and a monocoque body, but a full-fledged truck with a powerful frame, classic rear-wheel drive, a reliable braking system and an economical turbodiesel. Just what is so necessary for our difficult operating conditions.

High-fashion

In Russia, they will collect the current generation Daily, updated last year. This means that Russians will receive a modern car, the same as what is sold in Europe. True, we will produce modifications more simply, without built-in navigation systems, rear-view video cameras and other cost-increasing bells and whistles. But there will be no differences in the mechanical part; we even promise to install the AGile robotic gear shift system if there are orders for it.

Particular attention will be paid to the assembly of all-wheel drive 4x4 versions, since such vehicles are needed by emergency, rescue and medical services, according to Samotlor. And oil and gas producers might be interested in such machines. After all, the Daily 4x4 is not just an adapted road truck with a front drive axle, it is an almost newly developed SUV with a carrying capacity of up to 3020 kg (!) with a single rear tire and all the necessary locks.

The styling of the latest generation of IVECO Daily was developed by the famous Italian stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro, as eloquently indicated by the Italdesign badge on the doors. In the city, the new design attracts the attention of others to the car. There is no shame in making a truck with such a design the calling card of your company and once again demonstrating to others your success and well-being. But how organically will these high-fashion cars look on Russian roads and off-road?

We carry cargo

The van chosen for the test drive has decent dimensions, its length is more than 6.5 m, its height is about 3, and, as a result, it has a useful body volume of more than 17 m3, and its internal height is more than two meters. In such a body, not only do you not need to bend down, but if you wish, you can walk with your arms stretched up. At the same time, the IVECO Daily does not give the impression of a huge car; on the contrary, it looks like an ordinary semi-truck, only very long and tall.

Under the hood is a three-liter 16-valve turbodiesel

We were pleased with the wide and high doorways leading to the cargo compartment, although this was not entirely without complaints on our part. The rear hinged doors only open 180° and block rearward visibility through the mirrors. And hinges that allow doors to open 270° can only be installed upon request. I didn't like the rear door locks in the open position. They independently lock the doors when they open 90°, and in order to open them further, the locks must be released, which is inconvenient. But this is not so bad; when fully opened, the doors do not lock in any way and close at the slightest breath of wind.

I noticed that the entire lower part of the Daily along the perimeter is covered with plastic and rubber pads. When maneuvering at various bases and narrow warehouses, the driver will have less chance of damaging the car by getting caught on an obstacle, and even if this happens, replacing the plastic lining will always cost less than body repairs with straightening and painting.

The salon is like a big string bag

At first glance, the interior designed by Italdesign makes a powerful impression. The two-tone dashboard with numerous smooth lines, visors and recesses is undoubtedly the result of design work. Everything looks impressive, but there is a certain feeling that they have gone a little overboard - there is no expressiveness or memorable details. Try to mentally draw this dashboard after you get out of the car... Well, what happened?

Under the hood is a three-liter 16-valve turbodiesel

To an unspoiled consumer, such a salon may seem like the height of perfection. Moreover, there are so many containers for things! Two lockable glove compartments, several cup holders and countless open pockets. They are especially huge in the front doors and resemble a good-sized string bag. In the cabin, instead of the navigator installed on expensive modifications, there are two compartments according to the DIN standard - you can install a car radio, radio station or tachograph.

I also found one simplification in the cabin of the van I tested - there were no additional shelves above the windshield (an optional extra), while most European cars have them. But still, the interior design and quality of finishing materials are at such a high level that in this regard the car will give odds to many of its classmates.

Enjoy the movement

If you don’t know that your car has a diesel engine, you won’t guess it yourself. There are no vibrations or noise in all driving modes. Even the diesel notes of a running engine, which are familiar to motorists, cannot be heard here.

While driving I liked that the car didn’t require any getting used to – I got in and drove off! The steering wheel is moderately light and informative, and the pedals are felt literally at the genetic level. The IVECO Daily's joystick-type gear shift lever is conveniently located on the dashboard. The tested car is equipped with a 6-speed gearbox with a clear shift pattern and impeccable operation. The only thing was that, out of habit, I had to remember every time how the reverse gear was engaged: the fact is that on 5- and 6-speed gearboxes this happens differently. The difference in the layout is the same as on the classic Zhiguli and front-wheel drive Samara.

Overall I liked the dynamics of the car. Of course, I understand that I was driving an empty van with a fairly powerful (the most powerful - 176 hp, 400 Nm) engine, so its dynamic qualities were higher than the average Daily moving along the road with a load. On the Daily you can overtake with ease, as you feel that the car always has some reserve in terms of power and speed. Often I even had to stop myself, since it’s impossible to climb into the left lane for a long time in such a large car, and in the right lanes the Daily’s driving qualities were far superior to its neighbors.

I would like to say a few words about the ergonomics of the driver’s workplace. The activation of all necessary functions is located on two steering column switches, as a result there is not a single button left around the driver (not counting the buttons on the center console, to which we will return). This is convenient - you don’t have to take your hands off the steering wheel, but on the other hand, you need to get used to the steering column switches, which are overloaded with various functions, in order to remember how and what is turned on.

The beautiful instrument scales were a little disappointing. Despite the design elaboration, they turned out to be completely uninformative. On the tachometer, I would prefer to see clear colored sectors to instantly assess the engine's operating mode, but while driving, I could not immediately determine where the speedometer was and where the tachometer was - they looked exactly the same.

Nevertheless, the IVECO Daily also has positive aspects in ergonomics. Despite the avant-garde design of the dashboard, the deflectors of the ventilation and heating system were in the right place. And its control knobs on the center console are completely unrivaled! The ribbed knobs made of rubberized material, slightly recessed into the funnels of the front panel, are easy to touch - just stretch out your hand.

Not long to wait

It is gratifying that thanks to the production of new and modern European cars in Russia, they are becoming more accessible to our compatriots. Indeed, with the massive arrival of models such as IVECO Daily on our market, we are joining a new level of comfort, quality and reliability of commercial vehicles.

As for IVECO Daily itself: knowing the basic products of Samotlor-NN, it is not difficult to guess that soon we will have our own route and tourist buses and ambulances on this chassis. In addition to these modifications, chassis for mounting van bodies, tow trucks and other special superstructures will be produced in Russia, the production of which will be carried out by several third-party companies.

I hope that this machine will evoke in our professionals the same positive emotions that I had during my brief acquaintance. Moreover - and I am almost sure of this - during the production process the car will be adapted to Russian operating conditions, and through the joint efforts of IVECO and Samotlor-NN their widespread service will be established.
