Wheels and tires of the T-40 tractor: dimensions and pressure
The rear and front wheels of the T-40 tractor belong to its chassis. The wheels can be set to different positions, both in width and height, while changing the track and agricultural clearance.
The front axle is used to support the front of the tractor and also to change the direction of the front wheels using the steering. The axle consists of a beam attached to the front beam bracket. Front wheel brackets are attached to both sides of the beam. The wheel is mounted on the axle shaft flange. This shaft has a rotating lever on top, which turns the wheels under the action of the steering rods.

Rear wheels T-40 (drive)
The rear wheels are used to convert the torque transmitted by the engine into forward motion. The wheel structure includes a pneumatic tire, disk and rim. The wheel is screwed to the final drive axle flange. When performing heavy work on the tractor, it is recommended to install additional weights on its disks in order to increase its grip weight. When transporting loads in dry weather, it is recommended to remove loads from the drive wheels. The nominal pressure in the T-40 13.6R38 tires of the driving wheels should be 0.10-0.14 MPa (1.0-1.4 kgf/cm²), depending on the weight of the attachment and the type of work performed.
The rear wheels of the T-40ANM, 14.9-30 tractor have a different attachment to the disk and a smaller outer diameter. Tire pressure should be within 0.10-0.13 MPa (1.0-1.3 kgf/cm²). Rear wheel sizes are 11.00-38″.
Rear wheel: 1 - load; 2 — washer; 3, 4 - nuts; 5 - bolt; 6 — insert; 7 - tire; 8 — disk with rim.
Front wheels (guides)
To change the direction of movement of the tractor using the steering mechanism, front guide wheels are used. Just like the rear wheel, the front wheel consists of a tire, a hub with an axle and a rim. The rim, complete with tire, is installed on the hub and secured with pads. The front wheel rotates on two roller bearings mounted on a journal, the flange of which is bolted to the flange of the axle shaft.
When adjusting the axial play of the tapered roller bearings of the front wheels, the axial play is considered normal if there is no noticeable play and the wheel rotates freely. In order to check the axial clearance, it is necessary to lift the front wheel above the ground surface with a jack and, shaking it in the axial direction, determine the size of the gap.
If there is an axial play exceeding 0.5 mm, the tapered bearings should be adjusted following these steps:
1. drain the oil from the wheel hub; 2. Unscrew the hub cover and remove it; 3. Unscrew the castle nut and, tightening it, install the wheel so that it rotates freely without any play; Without disturbing the position of the castle nut, cotter it and reinstall the hub cover; 4. Fill the hub cavity with oil up to the wheel rotation axis and tighten the plug.
The front wheels of the T-40AM and T-40ANM tractors are driving. The wheels are attached to the final drive axle shaft of the front drive axle. Since the T-40ANM tractor is used to perform work on mountain slopes, the lower limit of tire pressure should be 0.18 MPa (1.8 kgf/cm²).
Front wheel: 1 — wheel disk; 2 — wheel rim with brackets; 3 - special washer; 4 - bolt; 5 — washer; 6 — nut; 7 - tire.
T-40 tractor tires and their operation
To ensure that the tractor tires are in good condition, the following actions must be performed:
1. observe the internal tire pressure standards; 2. do not allow significant slipping of the drive wheels when the tractor is operating; 3. in case of uneven wear of the tire treads of the driving wheels, periodically swap the tires from the furrow wheel to the field wheel and vice versa; 4. do not allow petroleum products (fuel, oil, etc.) to come into contact with tires; 5. clean tires of foreign objects stuck in the treads; 6. When storing the tractor for conservation, install it on the sawhorses so that the tires do not touch the ground; 7. Follow the rules for mounting and dismounting tires.
Mounting the tire on the tractor rim
The T-40 tractor tire is mounted on the wheel rim in the following sequence:
1. Place one bead of the tire over the flange of the rim. To do this, first put on part of the bead, and then, using mounting blades, pull the entire bead; 2. Powder the tube with a thin layer of talcum powder, insert it into the tire and straighten it thoroughly. Pass the nipple (valve) of the camera out through the hole in the rim; 3. Place the second bead of the tire over the edge of the rim, to do this, first put on part of the bead, and then, using the blades, pull the rest of the tire. The pulling of the side should end at the nipple of the camera. When installing the tire, carefully monitor the correct position of the nipple: its distortions are unacceptable. 4. Inflate the tire to normal pressure and check for air leaks.
When installing tires on the drive wheels, make sure that after installing them on the tractor, the direction of rotation of the wheel coincides with the arrow marked on the tire.
Standards for internal pressure in tractor tires T-40
How to disassemble a tractor wheel
The tire is dismantled as follows:
1. bleed air from the chamber; 2. slide both tire beads from the rim flanges into its recess on the side opposite to the location of the tube nipple; 3. insert two mounting blades between the rim on the nipple side and the bead of the tire at a distance of 10 cm on both sides of it; 4. Pull first part of the bead near the nipple over the edge of the rim, and then the entire bead; 5. remove the nipple from the hole in the rim, and then the entire camera; 6. Turn the wheel over and slide one side of the tire bead into the recess of the rim, and insert the shoulder blades on the other side and remove the rim from the tire.
Disadvantages of the T-40
Farmers consider the main disadvantage of this model to be its noise. In this regard, it is, of course, impossible to compare it with modern tractors. Also, the disadvantages of the T-40 include the cabin being too small and uncomfortable. In some cases, it is even simply covered with a tarpaulin on top. There is heating in the T-40 cabin, but, according to the majority of owners of this equipment, it is insufficient. Of course, the tractor driver does not feel very comfortable in it while working, and especially in very cold or hot weather. Some farmers consider the disadvantages of the T-40 models to be that the brakes are not very reliable and that the cooling system is not particularly effective.

T-40 engine: technical characteristics
The T-40 is a fairly powerful and at the same time fast model. These characteristics are explained primarily by the fact that its design uses a reliable engine. Previously it was labeled D-37 and had a power of 37 hp. With. Now this engine is produced by VMTZ OJSC as D-144. The T-40 can be equipped with one of two types: 37 or 50 hp. With. Below are the characteristics of this engine.
Parameter | D-144 36.8 (50 hp) | D-144 27.23 (37 hp) |
Rotation speed (rpm) | 1800 | 1500 |
Number of cylinders | 4 | 4 |
Cylinder capacity (l) | 4,15 | 4,15 |
Weight (kg) | 375-390 | 375-390 |
Dimensions | 919 x 741 x 848 | 919 x 741 x 848 |
The T-40 four-stroke engine runs on diesel fuel. It is air cooled. It is not difficult to distinguish a tractor with a D-37 engine from a model equipped with a D-144. The first has a rounded hood, the second has a rectangular hood.
