Why did the USSR make a UAZ with a sleeping bag and why was it not suitable for truck drivers?
By the mid-90s, private carrier services began to appear on the market. The Ulyanovsk Plant, noticing the trend of private owners, began to attract them with a new model of its car.
It was distinguished from the regular version by a cabin enlarged by 340 mm, in which a sleeping bag measuring 1580 by 710 mm appeared. It could only acquire its user functions with the seats moved forward.
His sleeping bag was not as fancy as a full-fledged long-distance truck, but he could sleep in it for one night. A niche for various things was built into the sleeping compartment. Drivers really liked it because of its large volume.
In addition to the announced changes, there were some more. So the length of the car increased to 360 mm, and the wheelbase became 230 mm longer. The changes made slightly reduced the cross-country ability, but this had a good effect on the UAZ - it stopped jumping, its movement became smoother.
The instrument panel also underwent changes, reclining seats appeared in the body, and the kit could include:

Gasoline engine ZMZ-406 from Volga. New ZMZ turbo engines are being created around its cast iron block
The range of gasoline engines will include as many as three units - the new ZMZ family, the creation of which is being assisted by the German engineering company FEV Engineering. The basic version will receive a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with the index ZMZ-25002.10, its power is 145 hp, torque is 240 Nm. One step higher will be the turbocharged ZMZ-223002.10 with a volume of 2.3 liters (150 hp, 330 Nm), and at the very top will be the ZMZ-223012.10 (170 hp, 350 Nm). These engines are created on the basis of the cast-iron cylinder block of the legendary 2.3-liter ZMZ-406, which appeared in the early 90s and was installed on the Volga. Bi-fuel versions of the new engines (gasoline + propane-butane and gasoline + methane) are also planned.
With the modernization, a heavy fuel modification will return to the SUV line - this time it will be equipped with a Ford TDCi 2.2 turbodiesel from the Transit van. Although Ford Motor left the Russian passenger car market in the summer of 2019, the production of Transits at the Ford Sollers joint venture plant in Yelabuga will only develop. The assembly of this turbodiesel will most likely be localized in Russia - at the now idle capacity of the engine workshop in Yelabuga, where 1.6-liter engines for Fiesta and Focus were previously produced. Installing the TDCi 2.2 under the hood of a UAZ will reduce the cost of the engine by achieving economies of scale.

Two gearboxes will be offered - this is the 6-speed hydromechanical “automatic” Punch Powerglide 6L50 (France), already known from the current Patriot, and the 6-speed “mechanical” BAIC (China), hitherto unknown to Russians. The BAIC concern produces a wide range of cars in China, including frame SUVs, similar in weight and size to Patriots - so this unit should suit it. The 5-speed Korean “mechanics” Dymos 3163-10, which has been used on Patriots since the model’s appearance in 2005, will become history.
The Patriot will retain the part-time transmission with permanent rear-wheel drive, a rigidly connected front axle and a rear differential lock. It is not yet clear what transfer case will be used. The current Patriot uses two transfer cases in parallel - Dymos 31638 (Korea) and Divgi Warner TZ-94 (India). There is also UAZ’s own unit, but it is installed only on copies in the cheapest “Classic Fleet” configuration with a 135-horsepower ZMZ-409; this version is mainly purchased by government agencies. Most likely, the Divgi Warner manual transmission will remain, since it is the only one that can be combined with an automatic transmission, and the Dymos manual transmission will drop out after the “mechanics” of the same brand. But other options are also possible, since recently in an interview with Ulyanovsk 73online.ru, UAZ director Adil Shirinov showed dissatisfaction with the current distribution systems: “We know about the problems and bottlenecks, we are now working on them with concentration. The same transfer case, the properties of which we definitely need to improve and find better solutions for it.”

"Patriot", which was not new at the start
The Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant is one of the few in the world that does not discontinue production of models that are already several decades old. For example, the famous “loaf” (UAZ-452 family) has been produced since 1965
, and outwardly remains almost the same car as half a century ago.
The UAZ-469 has been produced since 1972
, relatively recently it was slightly updated to the Hunter, but it is, in fact, the same car. And although under the hood these are more modern SUVs (injector), the outdated design and frankly low quality of workmanship scare off those who want to buy “just an SUV” made in Russia.
UAZ understood this for a long time, and since the mid-1980s they began to think about a fundamentally new model. But at that moment, some problems were emerging at the plant itself - low-tech production (with an abundance of manual labor) did not fit into the market economy, and the shortage of SUVs was gradually disappearing. The plant did not have money to develop a new model, so Togliatti VAZ was assigned to develop the design of the new SUV.
And if the design of the UAZ-3160 model
looked quite strange (short wheelbase and narrow track - and all this with an attempt to pass itself off as a modern SUV), then with the “filling” things were better. UMP was preparing a new engine with a power of up to 105 hp. (including the injection version), the car received a 5-speed manual transmission, a transfer case with one lever, spring suspension, front disc brakes and much more.
The new model was first shown to journalists in 1993. And although it still looked very strange, it was something completely new for the Russian automobile industry - that’s why the car received good reviews in magazines. The model was called “Simbir”, and was produced from 1997 to 2004

Feedback from the first buyers was clear - the model was crude and inherited most of the problems of the UAZ-469. First, the car's wheelbase was increased by 360 mm - the result was a UAZ-3162. Then there were so many modifications that one of them was allocated to the UAZ-3165 “Simba” project
– the mini-van was supposed to replace the outdated “loaf”, but still remained a prototype. But it was on “Simba” that UAZ tested various technologies - and further modernization eventually became the same “Patriot”, which received axles with a 1600 mm track, a five-door body, spring front and leaf spring rear suspension.
"Patriots" began to be produced in 2005
, and year after year they added something new to it: they modernized the engine control system, installed a more comfortable interior, added air conditioning, and changed attachments. "Patriot" is produced in various modifications, including "Pickup", vehicles for special and operational services. The model has gone through 2 restylings:
