The small-sized drilling rig UBShM-1-20 is used for developing vertical wells. Applicable for the following types of work:
- Auger drilling in soils of categories 1-4.
- With blowing and washing in soils up to category 12.
- Core drilling in soils up to category 8.
The UBShM-1-20 drilling rig is optimal for conducting geological surveys in hard-to-reach areas or cramped conditions.
Kurganavtoremont products are invariably highly praised by specialists working in the field of geodetic work. The use of the UBShM-1-20 drilling rig is also possible with equipment for statistical sounding (MVZ-01, NUSZ-15).
Features of UBShM drilling rigs
Small-sized drilling rigs UBShM have a very small weight - less than 200 kg assembled with all the equipment, as well as more than compact dimensions: for the operation of these rigs, a platform of just over 1 square meter is sufficient. Everything necessary is attached to the base of the mini-rig: a low mast only 2.5 meters high, hydraulic pumps, a traveling system with column fastening and control driven by an internal combustion engine.
Despite this size limitation, UBSM drilling machines can work with soil categories from I to IV with a dry auger and even up to category XII with washing and blowing. Possible for them:
- The depth of drilling holes is up to 50 meters deep.
- Power up to 20 hp from installed Honda type engines.
- Equipped with screws of different diameters as standard.
- Retrofitting with sets of equipment for drilling wells with cleaning by washing and blowing.
- Possibility of adding a down-the-hole hammer and equipment for statistical probing.
- Attachment to a transport base of various wheeled and tracked vehicles (Gazelle, UAZ, GAZ-34091 Bobr, etc.), light all-terrain vehicles, to trailed sleds using a Buran snowmobile as a tractor, and even to a hand truck.
INTERESTING! Small-sized installations of the UBShM type, when attached to a transport chassis, do not require special permits and registrations with the authorities inspecting road traffic, since they are considered cargo.
Advantages of the drilling rig:
- low weight and dimensions;
- simplicity and reliability of design;
- greater torque and feed stroke of the rotator compared to UBShM-1-13;
- Possibility of installation on various transport bases;
- possibility of use in hard-to-reach areas or cramped conditions;
- possibility of retrofitting with kits for drilling with purging/flushing;
- possibility of drilling with pneumatic hammer tools;
- possibility of retrofitting with equipment for conducting field tests of soils by static probing - MVZ-01.

Design Features
The UBShM 1 13 installation provides high productivity and efficient work results while minimizing the applied effort thanks to the following design features:
- Hydraulic control, which makes it easier to start the entire system at low temperatures.
- Complete mechanization of lifting and lowering operations of working drilling tools.
- Equipped with special adapter frames for mounting on almost any transport base.
IMPORTANT! The small width of the drilling apparatus UBShM 1 13 allows it to be transported along paths with a width of 1 meter, which significantly reduces the cost of seismic exploration operations in areas protected by the state as natural monuments.

Review of the small-sized drilling rig UBShM1-13 on ARGO Conquest 8×8
It is no secret that today almost all infrastructure monopolies are focused on developing new territories, both in Siberia and the Far East. New oil and gas pipelines, hydroelectric power stations, factories and industrial enterprises are designed and built. All this leads to the need to carry out engineering surveys in sparsely populated areas with poor transport accessibility. In this regard, many survey organizations began to purchase small-sized drilling rigs to carry out work on linear objects, for example UBShM1-13.
However, at present, some customers have a false impression that the UBShM1-13 drilling rig is incapable of drilling geotechnical wells. A false impression about the capabilities of UBShM1-13 is created by the contractors themselves. When providing documentation to the customer about technical equipment, they declare UBShM1-13 to drill wells more than 15 m deep with the selection of monoliths, which contradicts its technical capabilities.

In this review, I would like to describe my experience of using the UBShM1-13 drilling rig mounted on the ARGO base. Let me start with the fact that the combination of UBShM1-13 + ARGO turned out to be very successful. The carrying capacity of ARGO is 460 kg, the weight of the drilling rig is 190 kg + tools + 2 people, resulting in 420-430 kg. In this combination, the installation performs well in swampy, rough terrain and forested areas. It will pass where neither MTLBu nor GAZ 34039 will pass.

It is necessary to clearly understand that UBShM1-13 is intended exclusively for drilling wells along the linear part of pipelines up to 10 m deep with sampling (monoliths) of undisturbed structure and natural moisture. A torque of 66 kg/cm2 on the rotator and 1050 kgf of pressure on the bottom is quite enough for drilling such wells. Sometimes some difficulties may arise when selecting monoliths in dense clays. In such cases, the soil carrier was finished off with a hand-held impact “woman” (35 kg) and the issue was resolved. To select monoliths, the drilling rig is anchored with D-110 mm augers. When drilling in permafrost dispersed soils in the Tyumen North, we successfully used core pipes with a side groove on 2/3 of the core pipe and drill bits of the SA-4 type (SA-6, SM5-V, KTU “didn’t work” - the matrix was too powerful). If we compare the speed of penetration of wells UBShM1-13 and URB2A-2, then, of course, the speed of penetration on UBShM1-13 is lower than on URB2A-2, but there are situations in wetlands where heavy tracked conveyors with drilling rigs simply sink. It is in such situations that the UBSM on ARGO can be said to be irreplaceable. The picture is approximately the same in forest areas, where it is prohibited to cut clearings for the passage of heavy equipment. The UBSM on ARGO, with its dimensions (1500mmx3000mm), easily solves this problem.

The unit can successfully drill from ice, from pontoons and rafts on small rivers and reservoirs. For casing wells, UBShM1-13 is equipped with a winch based on the pulley principle. Of course, when drilling from pontoons and ice, it is necessary to lower the casing pipes to the bottom of the reservoir. Pipes D-127 mm and up to 3 m long were used (due to the winch). From drilling experience, it has been revealed that at UBShM1-13 it is permissible to drill on reservoirs and rivers with a depth of no more than 8 m and only wells for laying pipelines using the trench method, since the technical capabilities of UBShM1-13 are limited in the depth of drilling wells with the selection of monoliths. The starting point for drilling depth is taken from the bottom of the reservoir.
For drilling wells with flushing the bottom of the well with flushing liquids and compressed air, a removable flushing seal is installed on the UBShM1-13. When drilling with flushing, a 100-liter container is sufficient (usually a 200-liter barrel cut in half). Again, from drilling experience, it became clear that at UBShM1-13 it is possible to drill with circulation in rocks up to category 7 in terms of drillability. You can also drill “dry” with a ball up to category 6 in terms of drillability.

The only drawbacks of the drilling rig are low torque and bottom hole pressure. It is technically possible to increase the torque to 120 kg/cm2 and bottom hole pressure to 1200 kg. With such parameters, UBShM1-13 would have additional capabilities when drilling wells.
Thus, we can conclude that the drilling rig UBShM1-13 is quite suitable for drilling engineering-geological wells up to 10 m deep with the selection of monoliths, if you approach the work with skill and responsibility.
