“Indestructible” Korean Daewoo Novus trucks: they don’t do that anymore


Daewoo Novus is a family of medium- and heavy-duty multi-purpose trucks. This model, depending on the type of modification, can carry out both the transportation of any cargo and various types of work in construction and industry. For consumers, the manufacturer offers several versions of the truck with a 4x2, 4x4, 6x2, 6x4, 8x4, and 10x4 wheel arrangement. In addition, the modifications also differ in the maximum engine power, which varies from 260 to 450 horsepower.

Daewoo Novus trucks were first introduced to the market in 2004. They have proven themselves to be a reliable and unpretentious family. In 2012, the manufacturer carried out a small restyling, as a result of which the interior and appearance of the trucks were subject to changes. It is worth noting that models produced from this year have a name with the prefix SE.

Modifications

The development of the family lasted about three years, which is not such a long time for the automotive industry. It is worth noting that simultaneously with the base model, the manufacturer also began to develop various modifications, including:

  • Truck tractor;
  • Tipper truck;
  • Flatbed truck;
  • Garbage truck;
  • Crane arm;
  • Automobile concrete mixer.

In addition to these versions, there are many others. It is worth noting that over the entire period of mass production, about 75 different modified versions were produced, intended for a wide range of applications. They differ in many parameters, such as overall width and wheelbase length, maximum load capacity, wheel arrangement, and the type of superstructure installed.

Even a regular flatbed truck is available in several variations, with a maximum load capacity of 5,000 to 23,000 kilograms.

Tipper modification

This version is produced under the name Daewoo Novus SE 6/4. It is a large-capacity three-axle truck equipped with a tipper loading platform. The model is designed for transporting various bulk cargoes. Quite good cross-country ability allows you to work not only on asphalt road sections, but also on areas without any surface.

The debut of the modification took place in 2005. In December, the model entered mass production. In 2012, the manufacturer carried out a small modernization, as a result of which the truck received an updated appearance and a slightly redesigned interior.

For this dump truck, a double cab with a fairly modern design and a pleasant interior was used. In addition to two seats, the cabin has a berth located immediately behind the backs of the seats.

The weight of the truck when unloaded is 12,670 kilograms. The maximum carrying capacity is 19,130 ​​kilograms. As for the maximum permitted weight, it reaches 21,800 kilograms. 7,500 of them are held by the front axle, while 24,300 are placed on the rear bogie.

A dump body is installed behind the cab, having a useful volume of 15 to 18 cubic meters, depending on the configuration. The platform has rear unloading and a heating system implemented by accumulating exhaust gases.

The dump truck modification is equipped with diesel in-line and V-shaped six-cylinder, as well as V-shaped eight-cylinder power plants. Engine volume varies from 7.6 to 14.6 liters depending on the version of the dump truck. All units are equipped with a turbocharging system with intercooling of charge air, an electronic CommonRail fuel system, and a liquid cooling system. Maximum output power varies from 320 to 450 horsepower. The maximum torque ranges from 1324 to 2108 newton meters.

The engines are paired with a nine-speed or sixteen-speed manual transmission equipped with a double-disc dry clutch.

As standard, the dump truck has a driver's seat equipped with air suspension and heating, electric windows, air conditioning, auxiliary heater, radio, cruise control, and digital tachograph.

Medium-tonnage modification

The medium-tonnage modification was given the name Daewoo Novus SE Medium Cargo. This version has a 4x2 wheel arrangement. The main area of ​​application is the transportation of various types of cargo, both on asphalt roads and on dirt roads.

The model was presented to the public in 2005. Similarly with the previous modification, serial production of the medium-duty truck started in December of the same year. The model was restyled in 2012. Then the car received an updated appearance and interior.

The truck is equipped with a modern cabin, featuring a rather ergonomic interior. Inside there are two comfortable seats and one berth located behind the backrests.

Daewoo Novus SE Medium Cargo has a maximum carrying capacity of 4500 to 7000 kilograms, depending on the version.

The large-tonnage version is produced under the name Daewoo Novus SE Heavy Cargo. It has a three-axle chassis and a 6x4 wheel arrangement. Like previous modifications, this model is designed to perform various cargo transportation. It is worth noting that Heavy Cargo can be used either as a single truck or as part of a road train.

This version was demonstrated simultaneously with other modifications in 2005. At the end of this year its mass production began. The 2012 restyling affected, along with previous models, this modification as well. According to a similar scheme, the design and interior were slightly changed.

The heavy-duty truck uses the same two-seat cab, which has an interior with a well-thought-out arrangement of controls and instruments. There is a sleeping bag behind the seat backs.

Cabin

All versions of Daewoo Novus are equipped with the same cabin, which has two seats and a berth behind them.

The manufacturer managed to achieve very convenient access to the cabin. To a large extent, this is due to the thoughtful placement of handrails and steps, as well as a fairly wide doorway.

The interior of the cabin was very simple, but quite cozy. The front part is equipped with an informative dashboard made of modern plastic. As for the instruments themselves, they occupy a fairly good location, and they are also easy to read.

Like other trucks, there are drawers and various niches designed for storing some things or documents.

In the basic configuration, comfort is at a completely acceptable level. In the maximum configuration, the model is equipped with additional options that significantly increase operating comfort. These include driver and passenger seats with air suspension.

In all trim levels, the seats are adjustable in several parameters, including height, backrest angle and horizontal displacement. Adjustments are also present in the steering column, but here only the tilt angle is adjusted. Thanks to all this, the driver can sit behind the wheel with maximum comfort, regardless of his build and height. But in the standard configuration, the passenger is not provided with such comfortable conditions as for the driver.

As described earlier, there is a berth behind the seat backs. There is heating here. The manufacturer did not forget about the audio system, which has a remote control. It is worth noting that this option is available in all trim levels.

Elements of internal equipment are made at a fairly high level. The cabin has individual lamps for the passenger and driver, but in addition, the cabin has a central daylight lamp. The manufacturer placed the fuse box in the central panel. This solution greatly simplifies repair work related to the truck’s electronics.

It should be noted that in terms of safety, the Daewoo Novus cabin complies with European and Korean requirements. These requirements mean the presence of low door windows and thoughtful placement of rear-view mirrors.

The Doosan DV11 turbodiesel vibrates the pistons surprisingly quietly at idle speed, but, apparently, just in case, the bottom of the cabin is very well encapsulated with sound-proofing material. That is why in the cockpit with the engine running you can talk quite calmly without straining your vocal cords. However, from the outside it is not clear what creates more noise: the engine or the multi-blade fan? It feels like you're standing next to an industrial air conditioner.

The dump body deserves special attention, if only because of its tightness. The tailgate closes so tightly that the rainwater that filled the body practically did not flow out through the joints of the closed side - even if you were swimming. During unloading, the tailgate locks open automatically, but the location of the hooks in the locking system is unconventional: not as we are used to seeing - with the recess up, but on the contrary - with the recess down. The hinges located at the bottom of the tailgate fit neatly under the locking hooks when lowering the body after unloading, while the hooks pull the bead very tightly to the platform. From this we can conclude that there is a carefully thought-out system for locking the rear side of the dump body.

The body is equipped with its own lock, one of the elements of which, the so-called “pawl” (locking lock), is installed on the bottom of the dump platform in the front part. It serves as an additional guarantee that the body will not be able to rise spontaneously even if the lifting mechanism fails.

Additional options

The standard equipment of the Daewoo Novus truck has ABS and ASR systems, as well as air drying for the brake system.

In a more extended version, called Deluxe, the manufacturer installed seats equipped with air suspension for both driver and passenger. In addition, the package includes air conditioning, an aluminum fuel tank that can hold either 200 or 400 liters of fuel, as well as a heating system for the bed.

Among the additional options, the truck can be equipped with cruise control, an autonomous cabin heater, a seat heating system, climate control, and a remote radio key.

Engine access

The cabin has a suspension consisting of a shock absorber and a spring with a mechanical lock. Behind the wing on the right side there is a special mechanism that tilts the cabin forward. It is reliably protected from dirt, which extends its service life. The tilting process itself is carried out by a standard lever, which is actively used on many other similar trucks made in Europe. Optionally, this mechanism can be equipped with an electric drive operated by a button. This equipment greatly simplifies tilting the cab. As for access itself, in the extreme tilted position the cabin does not interfere with access to the engine and all nearby components and assemblies.

Flaws

This model has some disadvantages, but they are not many. Mostly, owners note the following:

  1. Suspension. The presence of a spring suspension, although it provides the truck with good load capacity, but has a negative impact on comfort when moving. As mentioned in the reviews, the suspension turned out to be very stiff, which is why the truck bounces on rough roads and shakes in the cabin. A seat with an air cushion eliminates this problem, but not much;
  2. Little free space. The model has a fairly ergonomic, but rather cramped cabin. Access to a sleeping area often causes some inconvenience. This is mainly prevented by the center console, on which the controls are located.
