The truck that came to us for testing is interesting from all sides. Firstly, Korean trucks are rare in the GP, much less the Daewoo brand. Secondly, it is not often possible to find flatbed vehicles with such outstanding overall dimensions. And thirdly, the test vehicle is equipped with a six-section telescopic power steering unit, making the Daewoo Super Novus a station wagon.

It's hard to say whether the photo conveys the true scale of the car, but in person the updated Deawoo Super Novus is impressive in its size. Height with folded crane 3800 mm. A passenger car will be hidden under the rear overhang; the overhang length is 4150 (!) mm. True, on vehicles without a hydraulic manipulator, the overhang was significantly less, but when installing the equipment, the body had to be significantly shifted back, hence the disproportionate dimensions of the truck. On some modifications of Super Novus with CMU, the body is shifted back, but shortened. So if you are confused by the dimensions of the car, you can purchase a “Korean” with similar technical characteristics, but with a shorter length.

The Euro 4 eco-standard cabin remains from the previous generation, only the headlights and fog lights have been moved to a metal bumper. The new bumper consists of three components, which significantly reduces the cost of repairs. It now has niches for your feet, where you can stand to wipe the windshield. The Asian-style rear-view mirrors are mounted on long brackets, and the doors have window sills. In total, these solutions allow you to control the situation around the truck; the impressive dimensions of the “Korean” do not cause problems when driving the vehicle.

What distinguishes Daewoo Super Novus from previous generation vehicles is the AdBlue tank located behind the cab on the left. And then a 400-liter diesel tank is suspended on the frame. Two spare wheels were placed in the rear overhang. Well, the most important thing that distinguishes the test truck from the base models is the presence of a telescopic boom of the SS 1926 crane from the South Korean company DongUang (Dongyang) with a lifting capacity of 7 tons with the ability to mount a working basket on the boom for high-altitude work.

Features of Daewoo Novus family cars

It is not often that you come across flatbed trucks with such outstanding overall dimensions as those of the Daewoo Novus. The machines, equipped with six-section telescopic cranes, are impressive in size. The height with the crane folded is 3.8 m. A passenger car could easily be hidden under the exceptionally long rear overhang: the overhang length is a whopping 4.15 m.

Naturally, on trucks without a hydraulic manipulator, the overhang is made significantly smaller, but when installing the equipment, the body had to be significantly shifted back. Hence the disproportionate size of the truck. On some modifications of Daewoo Novus (there are many of them) with CMU, the body is shifted back, but shortened. Therefore, if someone is confused by the dimensions of the car, you can purchase a “Korean” with similar technical characteristics, but with a shorter length.

The smooth ride of the unladen “Korean” is not surprising – the wheelbase is 5.64 m, standard Hankook tires, and efficient front and rear leaf springs. All this guarantees that there are no problems in driving a large truck, and the vehicle always maintains directional stability very well. Irregularities in the road surface are practically not transmitted to the steering wheel, and the cabin and air-suspended seats effectively “eat up” even serious road bumps.

The impressive dimensions of the “Korean” do not cause problems when driving the car. The Asian-style rear-view mirrors are mounted on long brackets, and the doors have window sills. These mirrors are quite large, electrically adjustable and heated. The road is clearly visible - the pillars practically do not interfere.

Traditionally for Asian cars, the Daewoo Novus cab tilts forward using an electric drive, opening wide access to the power unit and to the base of the crane. The power unit is covered with a solid plastic cover. Only the technological holes are open - the oil dipstick, the filler neck and the diesel fuel manual pump. The absence of a long telescopic gearbox link also contributes to convenient access - the truck uses a manual transmission cable drive.

To remotely start the engine when the cab is raised, a special key is provided. The air filter is hidden right behind the engine, and to replace it you need to tilt the cabin. And it’s practically impossible to get to the filter-separator without removing other components and parts. It is located between the engine and the cooling fan.

Daewoo Novus vehicles are built on a lightweight but reliable single-channel ladder frame made of high-strength steel alloy, which extends up to 85 centimeters behind the cab. It is Daewoo's own development.

The cabin suspension is a shock absorber and a spring with a mechanical lock. The folding mechanism is located behind the right wing and is not splashed with dirt. It is activated by a standard lever for European trucks. An electric drive with a button, eliminating additional physical effort, is an additional option. When the Daewoo Novus cabin is tilted to its extreme position, absolutely free access opens to all units and the engine.

Daewoo Novus cabin and driver's workplace

The cabin of this truck, although it was improved with the release of new models, generally remained the same “hello from the 90s.” It is somewhat cramped, but overall quite comfortable. For example, comfortable anatomical seats, equipped with armrests and the necessary choice of adjustments, are installed for both the driver and the passenger.

The high engine tunnel with the gearshift lever located to the right of the driver clearly divides the cabin into two working areas. And it is very difficult, almost impossible, to move from one to another without leaving the cabin. And it’s quite difficult to climb onto the folding bunk from the driver’s seat, especially if you’re not used to it.

The “sleeping bag” itself, although narrow (its width is 57 cm at the head and 67 cm at the legs), is equipped with heating elements and a control joystick. You don't have to worry about freezing when spending the night in the cabin. You can increase or decrease the heating level without getting up from the sleeping bunk. A nice option is the audio system remote control, which is already included in the basic package.

Another modern device in cars produced in the 2000s/2010s is the electronic tachograph. Information from it can be downloaded to a flash card via a USB connector.

The interior colors and quality of materials are decent for a car of this class; only the wood-like plastic trims evoke an ironic smile. The driver's work area is organized very competently - the two-spoke steering wheel does not interfere with reading instrument readings at all.

Between the speedometer and tachometer there is a large liquid crystal display on which information from the on-board computer is displayed (though in Korean or, alternatively, in Chinese). However, many basic indications, thanks to pictograms, can be understood without translation: these are, in particular, the level of diesel fuel, engine life, the current state of the air filter, batteries, current diesel fuel consumption, etc.

In its old version, the cabin does not have sufficient niches for the traditional “thousands of little things.” The classic places for glove compartments - in the panel in front of the passenger and above the engine tunnel - are occupied by fuse boxes. But there is a special box for glasses and a 12-volt cigarette lighter.

The driver's seating position is comfortable; a person of any size can sit behind the wheel with the proper level of comfort. The gear shift lever has small strokes and fits comfortably in the hand. Diesel vibration is practically not transmitted to the controls, including when the engine is idling. The cabin's sound insulation is not perfect, but quite decent. In addition, the Daewoo Novus engine itself is quite quiet. Korean engines from Doosan comply with European noise level standards, which makes the driver’s work quite comfortable.

You don’t have to talk about the comfort of the Daewoo Novus, but just look at the list of standard equipment for this car - air conditioning, electric windows, central locking, tilt- and height-adjustable steering column, electric heated mirrors, electric heated bunk, cruise control, air cab suspension ( on four cushions), an air-suspended seat, a standard radio, a USB tachograph, a watch - quite a solid list!

To start operating the crane in the cab, you only need to turn on the power take-off button. Control levers for hydraulic stops (outriggers) are located on both sides of the cab, so the operator can constantly monitor the process of installing the truck on the support legs. The open operator's seat and crane control levers are located at cab height at the base of the boom, so loading cannot be operated while standing on the ground or in the bed. And if one driver is involved in loading/unloading (and this is what happens), then he will have to climb on and off the operator’s chair several times.

Modern motor

The Daewoo Super Novus flatbed truck is equipped with a Doosan Infracore Co. V-shaped 6-cylinder power unit. Ltd of Euro 4 eco-standard using AdBlue composition. The power characteristics cannot be considered outstanding: the diesel engine pulls well at low end, the turbocharger starts working already at 1100 min-1, and the car accelerates noticeably. The six-speed gearbox also has Korean ancestry, which can be considered a definite plus. The familiar European switching pattern does not cause discomfort, but some questions remain regarding the clarity of the switching. Instead of 2nd gear, you often end up in 4th gear. By the way, the empty truck managed to start from a standstill on it.

The Koreans slightly let us down with the placement of other filter elements. For example, it is almost impossible to get to the separator filter without dismantling other components and parts. It is installed between the engine and the cooling fan.

Unlike the previous generation vehicles, the new Novus uses modernized low-leaf springs made of high-strength steel at the front and rear, which allows it to benefit not only in ride smoothness, but also in increasing the load capacity and reducing the dead weight of the chassis.

The cabin is cramped, it must be admitted, and moving between the seats and the sleeping bag in it is difficult. With a full spring suspension, driving on broken roads is not entirely comfortable - it is, naturally, not soft when driving without a load. And smooth asphalt is extremely rare in some regions. The air-suspended seat only partially saves you from this.

In terms of diesel fuel consumption: around 35-40 liters per 100 km in summer, 45-48 liters in winter. However, it all depends on the load. You shouldn’t buy questionable diesel fuel secondhand - only at “decent” gas stations.

In general, Daewoo Novus is a structurally simple car that is not overloaded with electronics and modern systems. And all its disadvantages are directly related to this advantage. It is suitable for those who are not ready to pay for additional comfort and modern design with additional expenses and expensive maintenance.
