Special project "Chelyabinets" - how are the legendary truck cranes made?

Chelyabinsk truck crane 25 tons: technical characteristics

The most numerous model line among the manufacturer is the Chelyabinets 25 ton truck cranes. The equipment varies in terms of special equipment. The machines are installed on the basis of a URAL automobile chassis, which allows work to be carried out in difficult to navigate areas. Some models of truck cranes are installed on the basis of a KAMAZ and MAZ off-road vehicle chassis.

Special project "Chelyabinets" - how are the legendary truck cranes made?

But you will be lucky to find yourself in African Tanzania, to look at Mount Kilimanjaro, glorified in songs... Looking at the top of the paleovolcano, do not expect an eruption - the “Crown of Tanzania”* went out thousands of years ago. But if you take a look around, perhaps dear Chelyabinsk will say hello to you, wave our city with a multi-meter steel “arm” - the boom of the Chelyabinets truck crane.

*"Crown of Tanzania" is an ancient translation of the name Kilimanjaro.

Just think, the Chelyabinsk plant sent these tall, rumbling cars to Africa for the UN mission. And cranes with Ural pedigree work in Afghanistan, Venezuela, Ethiopia, Mongolia, India, Iraq, Pakistan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and other countries. And most importantly: in all regions of Russia, the name of our city is inscribed in capital red letters on thousands of white and gray arrows. Is it possible in Surgut to buy “Chelyabinsk” sweets, a calendar with Kirovka or, say, the newspaper “Evening Chelyabinsk”? And a branded crane is just two phone calls away (if you find 6.5 million for a basic model of a 16-ton truck crane).

There is something to be proud of, because even on the most popular Ural pasta, which (they say) are also quoted in Italy, the word “Chelyabinsk” is only in small print on the back of the package.

Nobody cares about the mannered Chelyabinsk milling machine operator Ivan Dulin, and the meteorite is not remembered every week, but the Chelyabinets cranes are on their way out of the factory gates. And the brand has both a legend and faith with hope and love. Well, let's take things in order.

These are your ChMZ

With these ChMZ of yours the devil himself will break his leg! Ask the taxi driver to drop you off at ChMZ - sure enough, you’ll end up in the Metallurgical District. Previously, there was the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, now it is the Combine - Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. But if you need to look at the cranes, then it’s on Kopeiskoye Highway, to the entrance of the Chelyabinsk Mechanical Plant.

My guides, Sergei Zherebin from the marketing department and project administrator Ivan Brytchenkov, talk about the plant’s anthem, which is played over the speakerphone every morning four minutes before the start of the working day. Tones and makes you automatically increase your step. Right behind the entrance there are art objects: the same caterpillar DEC and a giraffe mascot. In principle, the giraffe does not have a special legend, it is “just cool, decorates exhibitions.”

Where the drawing boards used to stand, they set up ping pong. Naturally, designers have long been working in special software, and not on Whatman paper, and they warm up at lunchtime and bounce a ball.

Crane with plus

In the office of chief designer Andrei Sosnovskikh, a charming figurine is prominently displayed. This (in miniature) is the pride of the plant. Looking ahead: everyone with whom we had a chance to talk at the enterprise was really inspired by the line of the new generation of Chelyabinets “Series Plus” cranes. These cars, compared to ordinary Chelyabinsk vehicles, are kind of like Terminator-2 against the backdrop of Terminator-1.

Andrey Sergeevich says: the Chelyabinets truck crane appeared in difficult times. During the USSR, ChMZ was famous for its DEK crawler cranes, but, to quote the classics, “in the holy nineties” (some are saints, some are dashing), the plant began to look for new niches. The country did not have enough truck cranes, which even military factories that were developing civilian products then began to produce. Then, in 1996, the Chelyabinets brand was born, as a response to the brands “Ivanovets”, “Galichanin”, “Motovilikha” and others.

Here in our region, by the way, we have a very successful tandem: the car produces all-terrain chassis, and ChMZ supplies the “mount.” The new machine of the Next series, says chief designer Sosnovskikh, turned out to be very successful: ChMZ engineers took almost the second assembled Next off the assembly line.

“Comfortable car! Airflow, heating... even a heated windshield! Not every passenger car has this, but here it is in the database. The technical parameters of the car are also good.” Actually, the new generation chassis received a new attachment in the form of the Chelyabinets “Series Plus” crane installation.

Almost recently, ChMP has mastered the Ural Next chassis running on gas engine fuel. We had to tinker: due to the fact that the methane cylinders are located behind the chassis cabin, there was less space for placing the crane installation. But, since the carrier vehicle is a whole ton heavier (compared to the diesel version of the chassis), the CMP designers managed to make a more stable and, as a result, a more load-lifting crane.

There is such a job - to raise the Motherland

We go through the design department to production. “Good News” has been to different factories, but we have never seen such workshops before. The details are simply huge; it’s easy to make an element 12 meters long. Appropriate sizes and equipment. Let us remind you that in mechanical engineering, even with such product dimensions, an error of half a millimeter is considered unacceptably huge, in fact, a defect.

ChMP has been undergoing modernization for several years now. Note the concrete floor. It is all new, impeccably smooth over thousands of square meters (well, in some places the paint is trampled, this is constantly updated). Can you imagine how much time, labor and finances it took to create just one floor?

A plasma cutting machine was installed relatively recently. A fabric screen to prevent sparks from flying to the sides.

The sheet can be cut with plasma in all directions and chamfers can be removed. This is such a modern device.

And this is laser cutting. There are two such installations in the workshops (the second is smaller).

A well-known thing is a sheet bender. This is not simple, automated, computer controlled. Know yourself, set a program, and provide preparations.

And another sheet bender - the size of a cottage.

The technological process, waste management, even lighting - everything is according to the Japanese labor philosophy, just like at Toyota. It's called the Kaizen philosophy. No hitches, total quality control, discipline and even breathing everywhere. Like Garfield the cat.

And here is a photo to understand the relative sizes of the equipment; a person nearby was asked to pose (in general, it was lunch break, the workshop was not crowded).

Painting area. The Chelyabinets' signature paint scheme is a red cab, light gray boom, dark gray lower frame and bright red hook!

In principle, the color of the cabin can be any - the customer’s desire is the law.

Prefabricated area

Structurally, a truck crane consists of several large units - a boom, a cabin, a rotating frame, a lower (non-rotating) frame, and outriggers. Everything comes together in about three days. New truck cranes leave the factory gates every day, and DEKi giants several times a month.

The products are one-piece and almost unique, because each customer has his own view of the packaging. Although, of course, in general terms all the cranes repeat each other, the design department will not be able to go away for a multi-day tea party; they constantly need to come up with something and modify it to order.

These are the “Plus Series” vehicles that followed President Putin’s KAMAZ along the newly opened Crimean Bridge. True, in a completely white version.

Quality Director Alexander Telegin met us at the assembly. I ask - what is the phone number on the boom, is it the sales department? Not only! This is also an opportunity to contact the plant’s service department. Let’s say a Chelyabinsk resident works in the “north”, so far away that he rarely encounters a polar bear, and technical centers cannot be found at all. And suddenly the driver has some question about setting up. You can immediately call for free from any available phone and immediately receive technical support.

In total, there are more than eighty posts throughout the country and in the neighboring countries where Chelyabinets can officially receive technical assistance, and if it is not possible to come, they will advise remotely.

Alexander Vladimirovich especially respects the already mentioned generation of cranes “Series Plus”; for the plant this is a big step towards a bright future. By the way, the plant’s sales increased by 27% over the year, while the share of competitors, on the contrary, fell. Chelyabinsk, forward!

PPP-shka

In a separate nook, a special car sparkles with war paint. My guide slowly reasons: “The firefighters say that if they had such a machine, it would save many lives. This is a completely different level of firefighting equipment.” The firefighting foam lifter (FPR) is insanely, simply cosmically expensive and is made to special order for the oil industry.

Upon arrival at the site, the PPP-shka automatically releases its “paws” and is set to a horizontal level, while the operator with a remote control can stand tens of meters from the machine. This is understandable, imagine if a petroleum products storage facility explodes. Then the boom rises and from a height of thirty meters the car spews out a hurricane stream of foam.

What is the difficulty for designers when designing a foam lifter? The task of a conventional truck crane is to overcome gravity, lift the load from the bottom up and lower it smoothly. Other forces are at work here: according to Newton’s third law, foam flying forward pushes the arrow back with incredible force, and the task of technology is to hold the nozzle in place. And all this in a battle with fire, when every second of delay can cost human lives and will certainly cost a pretty penny.

Hour of testing

In fact, testing a finished crane without additional options takes not an hour, but 15-18 hours, and more advanced models take more than a day. Static tests are carried out with an overload of 25% (for example, DEK-631 lifts not 63, but 80 tons during tests). The testing area with cargo is right there, right outside the gates of the assembly area.

We were lucky enough to see the most modern model of a truck crane, the one on the Ural Next chassis with a gas engine. At some distance there is a “pre-restyling” crane, without the inscription “Plus Series” on the boom (the machines can also be distinguished by the color of the boom - they used to be painted pure white, and not light gray, like the “Plus Series” models). After the tests, they immediately leave for their super construction sites.

Here are the methane cylinders, because of which the dimensions of the crane had to be reduced.

Tests are ongoing, and we must move around the test site with great caution. Six cranes can be tested at the same time, the rest are waiting their turn.

Testers at work.

Stop panicking

The atmosphere is calm, the spirit is high - this is the feeling left by the Chelyabinsk Mechanical Plant. From scraps of conversation it is clear that they confidently create their destiny here with engineering, calloused hands, giant machines and a little table tennis rackets. After conversations with employees, the conclusion is clear: the market is difficult, but it is possible, and even necessary. Look for fellow countrymen in foreign lands! But remember that on export vehicles the name “Chelyabinets” is sometimes written in Latin, hieroglyphs, script, or even in Portuguese.

The editors sincerely thank the management and employees of the Chelyabinsk Mechanical Plant for the excursion.
