Engine

Initially, only the MMZ D-245 engine (Minsk Motor Plant) was installed on the bus, but over time several modifications appeared. The version with the YaMZ-534 engine has increased power, but at the same time the price of the bus increases. The most expensive modification is equipped with an American Cummins engine, powerful and economical. All three engines are diesel.

Reliability, problems and repair of YaMZ-7511

In 1996, an updated version of the 238th family was released, which was called YaMZ-7511.
Let's look at the differences between 238 and 7511. The YaMZ-238DE2 cylinder block with a V8 configuration (camber angle 90º) and with oil injectors was chosen as the basis for creating a new diesel engine. Inside it there is a 238DK crankshaft with a diameter of the main journals of 110 mm, and the diameter of the connecting rod journals is 88 mm - the same crankshaft as on the 238DE2. Connecting rods, pistons, piston rings are the same as on 238DE2, with a piston pin of 52 mm, and the height of the pistons is 85 mm. The flywheel also remained unchanged. There is an oil pump with a capacity of 165 l/h (was 140 l/h). On the basis of this engine, the 6-cylinder YaMZ-7601 was produced. This family is currently in production, but environmental standards are becoming stricter all the time, and today the 7511 diesel engine is being replaced by the cleaner YaMZ-658.

Differences between YaMZ 7511 engines

1. YaMZ-7511 - 400 hp version. There is a fuel injection pump 175-01 (on models from YaMZ-7511.10 to YaMZ-7511.10-20) and 175-40 (on models from YaMZ-7511.10-34 to YaMZ-7511.10-43). This engine was used on MAZ-5336, 5432, 5440, 6303, 6317, 6403, 6417, 6422, 6425; Ural-6563, KrAZ-6140, 7140, DET-320, KO-816, MZKT-65272, 74181, 8021, RSM 1401 and Torum-740 combines. 2. YaMZ-7512 - analogue with 360 hp. and with fuel injection pump 175-11. The engine is found on MoAZ-7505, 4048 and on the Polesie combine. 3. YaMZ-7513 - 420 hp engine. with pump 175-50. Installed on MZKT-6527, 6922 and 7418. 4. YaMZ-7514 - analogue of 7511 with 375 hp. with another generator and fuel injection pump 175-70. Designed for AD-200 diesel generators.

Problems and reliability of YaMZ-7511

This engine is no different from the YaMZ-238 Euro 2 and their problems are the same: 7511 also heats up, throttles, revs fluctuate, etc. All the problems are described here using the 238 as an example, but overall it is a very reliable unit.

The powerful and economical YaMZ-7511.10 engine is a version of the YaMZ-238 diesel engine updated in 1996. Over the years since the start of production, the YaMZ-7511 has proven itself to be reliable and easy to use. The improved engine is not much different from the base engine YaMZ-238DE2. The same cylinder block with oil jets to cool the pistons and the same crankshaft. The YaMZ 7511 diesel engine uses direct fuel injection with a mechanical injection pump and injectors. In fact, the YaMZ-7511 engine differs from the YaMZ-238DE2 only in the high-pressure fuel pump and increased boost pressure using a remote intercooler (charge air cooling radiator), which made it possible to increase the power to 400 hp. and lead to compliance with the requirements of the EURO-2 environmental standard. The use of an oil-water radiator (WMR) installed on the engine allows you to keep the temperature in the oil system at an optimal level under significant loads on the internal combustion engine. High technical characteristics, power, as well as ease of maintenance and repair, made the YaMZ engine popular and beloved, both in Russia and beyond. The plant is continuously working to improve the power unit and expand its applicability. So, a modification of the engine was recently created for installation on the Kirovets tractor. Engines YaMZ-7511.10 with a power of 400 hp. used on MAZ, MZKT, BAZ, MoAZ vehicles, combines, tractors and loaders. A worthy successor to the YaMZ-238

The launch of a new family of eight-cylinder V-shaped diesel engines into mass production was a natural result of the modernization of the classic YaMZ-238 engines. These diesel engines can rightfully be called the predecessors of the YaMZ-7511. The new Yaroslavl 8-cylinder engines, dating back to 1996, are, in fact, forced YaMZ-238/DE. “YAMZ-7511” made the series stand out due to its significantly increased power, which covers a solid and impressive range from 360 to 400 horsepower.

Modifications of "YAMZ-534"

In terms of their capabilities, YaMZ-534 engines are very versatile. These motors effectively perform the functions of power units on a variety of equipment weighing up to 12 tons, together with cargo; or on road trains weighing up to 21 tons. It is allowed to use these engines on vehicles with a number of wheels from 4 to 6, with two or four driving wheels. Initially, YaMZ-534 diesel engines, all their modifications and configurations, were intended for installation on MAZ, Ural (new model), GAZ and GAZonNext (gas fuel) trucks, as well as small and medium capacity buses of the PAZ brand.


The key differences between the individual modifications lie, first of all, in the settings of the ECU - an electronic fuel supply system optimized for specific tasks. A more detailed overview of the specific application of modifications of these motors is as follows: • “YaMZ-5340” – a basic modification used as a power unit for trucks, dump trucks, chassis, tractors with the wheel arrangement “4x2”, “4x4”, “6x2” , “6x4”, with a total weight of up to 12 tons, road trains based on them up to 21 tons - Minsk Automobile. There are also three additional modifications: with preparation for installation of an air conditioning compressor (“YaMZ-5340/01”), with a fan (“YaMZ-5340/02”), with a fan + preparation for installation of an air conditioner compressor (“YaMZ-5340/03” ). • “YaMZ-53402” – designed for trucks “Ural-432065” and other vehicles of the “Ural” brand, including all-terrain vehicles with a 4x4 wheel arrangement, with a total weight of up to 13 tons, for road trains based on them up to Weighing 24 tons. A separate special modification “YaMZ-53402-10” is used as part of the tracked snow and swamp-going vehicle “ZZGT”. • “YAMZ-5341” - this engine is used as a power unit for the following MAZ vehicles: medium-tonnage vehicles, on a 4x2 vehicle chassis with a total weight of up to 6 tons, for road trains based on them up to 10 tons, and for buses. • “YaMZ-5341/10” – this motor is used as a power unit for buses of the “PAZ-320412” family, with a gross weight of up to 11 tons. There is also a special modification “YaMZ-5341/11” for installing an air conditioning compressor. • “YAMZ-5342” – used as a power unit for buses of the “PAZ-320402”, “PAZ-4234”, “PAZ-3237” models, with a total weight of up to 11 tons. • “YAMZ-5344” – modification for buses brand "PAZ-32053". • “YaMZ-5344-10” is a diesel engine option specifically for medium-tonnage trucks of the GAZ-3308 (Sadko) and GAZ-3309 family. • “YaMZ-53442” – a special modification designed for medium-tonnage off-road trucks of the “GAZ-3308” family and their chassis. • YaMZ-534/CNG is the newest and most promising modification, launched into production only at the end of 2015. Powered by gas. At first, it will be equipped with new versions of GAZ trucks, and in the near future – with a wide range of all kinds of equipment for various purposes. In addition, since May 2014, the plant launched serial production of an accelerated modification - "YAMZ-53472-10", with a power of 215 horsepower at 2600 rpm, specially designed for the new army armored vehicles "GAZ-233036" (it aka "SMP-2 "Tiger").

By the way, at the beginning of the 2000s, Yaroslavl Motor specialists argued that there were no plans to upgrade classic V-shaped diesel engines to the level of modern Euro standards, and that their remaining life on the market would be very short. Among the main reasons for such a strategy were the excess weight of classic diesel engines, compared to in-line engines, and their relatively small liter power, combined with far from the best efficiency, so to speak, of the twentieth century.

However, changes in the economic situation and time itself made adjustments to these plans: the V-shaped “six” YaMZ-236 and the V-shaped “eight” YaMZ-238 (which, by the way, “ celebrated their 55th anniversary!) At the same time, their production is slowly but surely decreasing from year to year. And instead, their modified versions, taking into account modern requirements, appeared on the plant’s assembly line. What are the main differences between the YaMZ-7511 and its “ancestor” – the YaMZ-238/DE?

Firstly, the engines of the YaMZ-7511 series are equipped with a completely new, much more efficient injection pump - a high-pressure fuel pump. Other distinctive features of YaMZ-7511 diesel engines are: built-in liquid-oil heat exchangers, high-performance water pumps; a completely new liner-piston group (with an improved oil cooling system). Power units of this family are designed for use with a charge air installation, with it secured to the frame of the final product.

An important difference between the new engine and the regular V8 is a modified lubrication system and improved heat removal from the piston skirt and bottom. Here, more efficient cooling of the piston with oil was used than with a conventional nozzle. The YaMZ-7511 uses forced cooling of the piston - it is also called circulation or gallery cooling.

This is when oil is periodically supplied to a special gallery in the ni-resist insert of the piston, and then flows out into the sump, taking with it excess heat. That is, accordingly, this means an oil pump of increased productivity and a more efficient water-oil heat exchanger. And besides all this, there are also pistons of a more complex design.

Design

PAZ 4234 is a high-floor bus with a carriage-type frame on a supporting frame. The main difference from the standard model is the presence of two doors and a body lengthened by a meter. Otherwise, the bus has a recognizable design, but has already undergone one restyling in 2007. The ground clearance is 27 cm, which allows it to be used in a wide variety of conditions, including on bad roads.

Thanks to the elongated body, the capacity of the bus has also increased. The number of seats has reached 30, with a maximum capacity of 50 passengers. If anyone remembers the old models of grooves, then their seats, although soft, were not very comfortable during a long drive, and even on uneven roads they shook as if in sea waves.

The engine type is a four-stroke, eight-cylinder, V-shaped cylinder arrangement, with compression ignition and turbocharging, with liquid cooling, intermediate cooling of the charge air in an air-to-air heat exchanger installed on the vehicle.

Cylinder block, cylinder heads

The V-shaped cylinder block of this engine, with a camber angle of 90 degrees, is cast from gray low-carbon cast iron. It also serves as a base for mounting all components and parts of the engine. The blocks of 8-cylinder engines, as well as the blocks of 6-cylinder engines, have an absolutely identical design. However, they are not interchangeable, since individual or block cylinder heads have different types of attachment to them.

The cylinder heads mounted on YaMZ-7511 engines can be, depending on the configuration, individual or block. In this case, an individual head is mounted on each valve and attached to the block with studs 209 and 248 mm long. Block cylinder heads are installed in a complex cut into three or four cylinders, in various modifications.

The cylinder/piston group on the YaMZ-7511 is made with a modernized oil cooling system. This system made it possible to improve the performance of the group and extend its design life. Compared to its predecessors, the new 8-cylinder has a more thoughtfully designed integrated oil-liquid heat exchanger, and its water pump has increased performance. The filtration unit has also been expanded and improved.

The YaMZ-7511 crankshaft is a stamped steel part with surfaces nitrided to a depth of at least 0.35 mm. The crankshaft of this engine consists of five main bearings and four connecting rod journals. The main bearings of the shaft are installed in the cylinder block housings, with plain bearing shells. And on its crankpins there are connecting rods (9 for each journal), with a lower head with liners.

The connecting rods are steel, I-section, with oblique connectors on the lower head and special shackles on the upper head. The flywheels are made of gray cast iron, attached to the crankshaft with bolts and a high-hardness plate. The main bearing shells of the crankshaft and the lower head of the connecting rod are steel, thin-walled, with a working layer of lead bronze.

Cylinder liners are cast from special cast iron, “wet” type, with phosphated surfaces. They are mounted in special bores of the cylinder block. The pistons are made of a special eutectic aluminum-silicon alloy. The design of the engine provides for direct cooling of the pistons from fixed nozzles. The piston skirts have recesses for cooling nozzles.

Gas distribution mechanism

Features of the gas distribution mechanism of the YaMZ-7511 engine: overhead valve type; with a lower camshaft, and with valve drive through hoses, roller tappets, rocker arms and rods. The stamped steel camshaft is located at the top of the cylinder block and is driven by two helical gears.

Inlet and exhaust valves are made of special heat-resistant steel alloys. During operation, they move inside metal-ceramic guide bushings. They are pressed against the saddles by two cylindrical coil springs, with different winding directions. When creating the YaMZ-7511, the dimensions of the intake and exhaust channels were radically revised, and this made it possible to increase the efficiency of combustion of the mixture and exhaust of gases, and, accordingly, improve the performance of the engine itself.

Lubrication, fuel system, turbocharging

The lubrication system and fuel system are identical to those of the previous generation YaMZ 8-cylinder engines. By and large, the YaMZ-7511 remains the same “238”, which over many years have earned an impeccable reputation as unpretentious, fairly simple in design, maintenance and repair of diesel engines.

However, these are still much more modern “engines”. And in addition to accelerated power indicators and a decent working life, the motors of this series can please many more. First of all, you can pay attention to the stricter exhaust cleaning indicators.

Of course, nowadays you can no longer count on international (European) Euro-2 class routes, but for “home” use this indicator is very good. Especially if you “keep in mind” the significant difference in cost between YaMZ and the “cleaner” imported European engines “Deutz” and the like. By the way, the efficiency indicators of the YaMZ-7511 are also very impressive, compared to their ancestors “originally from the USSR”.

Initially, having a focus on certain customers and partners, YaMZ planned the indispensable equipment “YaMZ-7511” with turbocharging. If we make comparisons and comparisons with 238 engines, then its main feature is the presence of a modern, productive fuel injection pump of the “Compact-40” class, which, we recall, has very solid injection energy data (the maximum reaches 1200 kg/cm2). This high pressure fuel pump is an eight-section plunger type (spool type plungers).

The third modification is no longer equipped with a Chinese engine, but with the latest YaMZ-534 diesel engine from Yaroslavl. It was developed jointly with the Austrian company AVL, equipped with common rail injection from Bosch, exhaust gas recirculation and meets Euro 4 standards. The engine of the future! And although the version adapted for the PAZ loses to the “Chinese” in terms of “horses” (150 hp versus 185 hp), the torque here is higher - 580 Nm versus 550 Nm.

How does a “spring” PAZ drive with YaMZ? The rear suspension behaves approximately the same as on conventional “grooves”: stiff, shaking. The new soundproofing of the engine compartment is very good: heaven and earth compared to the cars of the first releases! And the diesel itself is quiet: the “Chinese” is even noisier.

But the complaints about the car’s behavior remained the same as before. The steering is uninformative (if you “swing” the steering wheel left and right while driving, the bus doesn’t even think to react), the gearbox drive is like rubber, tight and with very closely spaced gears.

As for the engine itself, it confidently accelerates the car with passengers, but at about 80 km/h the bus completely loses its agility. However, the declared “maximum speed” of 100 km/h here is still higher than that of options with Chinese and, especially, Trans-Volga engines.

But the fate of the new Yaroslavl diesel engine is a big question. More recently, the GAZ Group reported that serial production of diesel engines of the YaMZ-530 family will begin in 2011, and 1,500 jobs will be created at the promising plant for their production. But exactly the day before the demonstration of the bus with the new engine, the state corporation Rostekhnologii blocked a loan from Vnesheconombank for 5.8 billion rubles for this project! And if there is no money, then there will be no engines as planned. Gas workers called the incident a “conflict of interest”: Russian Technologies owns a controlling stake in KAMAZ, and it is now launching the production of Chinese middle-class Cummins diesel engines. If so, get rid of Yaroslavl competitors from the market! Despite the fact that the YaMZ-530 is the first and, in our opinion, a very successful Russian unit of this class. But even if its production can be established, a “groove” with such an engine will be only slightly cheaper than the current one with a Chinese engine. Eh.

In the meantime, the fate of the shown modifications is as follows: a copy from YaMZ is being prepared for certification, the gas vehicle is experimental, but the first batch of long-wheelbase buses is already being produced.

Disputes arise regularly, mainly among MAZ owners (this is understandable: drivers of tractors “carrying” Topol-M missiles or S-300 air defense systems have no need to argue on forums about the advantages and disadvantages of engines). Subject of dispute: which is better: the new YaMZ-7511, or the good old YaMZ-238?

Although the majority of “long-range heroes” still adhere to a conservative point of view and speak out for the simpler and more familiar 238, it is impossible not to note the better efficiency indicators of the YaMZ-7511. After all, as you know, there is a very clear relationship: if the engine “eats” a lot, its owner has to “go on a diet”.

As for the YaMZ plant as a whole, today this enterprise can already be safely placed on a par with the world’s “leaders” of the diesel industry - such as Deutz and Cummins. Although the Yaroslavl Motor Plant has not yet reached Soviet production volumes, it is still the foundation on which the entire domestic automobile and tractor diesel industry is based. The plant’s partners are all leading automobile and bus, tractor and combine harvester, excavator and crane enterprises in Russia and the CIS.
