KamAZ garbage trucks are special vehicles based on the chassis of a famous automobile brand

KamAZ is a Russian brand of medium and heavy-duty trucks. The first car of this brand rolled off the assembly line of the plant in Naberezhnye Chelny in 1976. The range of these cars is so wide that its description can take up several gigabytes of computer memory. They are produced for the needs of the army, agriculture, as long-haul trucks and in the form of a chassis. It was this type of KamAZ that determined the almost immense breadth of its scope of application. One of them is garbage trucks based on KamAZ, which ensure the normal life of our cities.

Garbage trucks based on KamAZ

A garbage truck is a type of special vehicle, its brand can be very different - MAZ, KamAZ, on the chassis of which special equipment is installed. Since transporting waste is a very specific task, these vehicles are equipped with hydraulic lifts to facilitate loading and unloading, and have a durable, sealed body, inside of which there is usually a press plate for compacting waste.

Such equipment for transporting waste in Russia is produced by several enterprises, for example, OJSC Ryazhsky Automobile Repair Plant in the Ryazan region. To install its equipment, it uses the entire model range of KamAZ chassis, starting with index 43 (medium load capacity) and ending with index 65 (high load capacity).

In total, several dozen models of KamAZ garbage trucks are produced for work in urban municipal services, which can be divided into three large groups:

  • side loading garbage trucks;
  • with rear loading.
  • multilifts.

In side-loading garbage trucks, waste containers are lifted by a hydraulic manipulator (usually located on the right side of the vehicle) and tipped into the body over the side. So far, this is the most common transport for waste disposal found on the streets of our cities.

It serves standard waste collection sites equipped with containers weighing up to 500 kg. A compaction plate is used to compact the waste. The machine can be operated by one operator. All garbage trucks of this type are equipped with a pendulum-type compaction plate, which is not capable of compacting waste efficiently enough, and therefore are gradually being replaced by rear-loading machines.

In rear-loading garbage trucks, containers are not thrown over the side, but are emptied into a special receptacle, from where a screw conveyor moves them into the body. They are much more complex in design and often require the use of two or more operators (in manual loading models). However, such garbage trucks have a more efficient compaction system, and therefore can serve a larger area. This predetermined their competitive victory over side-loading models.

Multilifts are chassis onto which large-volume containers are loaded using a crane, hook or winch. They are usually used for removing construction waste that is large in volume and cannot be compacted.

There are also special machines in which waste is loaded using a front loader by throwing containers over the cabin. However, for a number of reasons, for example, due to the large dimensions of the hydraulic manipulator boom and the rather dangerous operation of throwing a heavy load across the cabin, they have not found widespread use.

Garbage wind of change: we met the newest garbage trucks

Times are changing, and old, rumbling garbage trucks are gradually being replaced by new, quieter and more productive machines. Our review of the Wasma garbage truck exhibition, which took place in Sokolniki at the end of 2016, began with similar words. And recently I attended the RG-Techno company conference and the WasteTech exhibition (both events were also dedicated to garbage trucks) and was convinced that those words were correct.

One of the main installers of garbage truck superstructures, the RG-Techno company, works with almost all foreign and domestic manufacturers of chassis and superstructures represented on our market. One of the most popular chassis/superstructure combinations at the moment is the Scania garbage truck with a body from the German company Zoeller. I got acquainted with two such machines.

The two-axle Scania P250 (250 hp and manual gearbox) is equipped with a seventeen-cc body. Thanks to its small dimensions, such a machine is easier to maneuver in narrow yards. The three-axle P360 (360 hp and manual transmission) is equipped with a new body with smooth sides. Its volume is 22 m3. The compaction coefficient, which shows how many times the garbage can be compressed in the body, is seven for both bodies. You can buy cars from official dealers. A two-axle vehicle costs about 11.3 million rubles, and a three-axle vehicle costs 12.9 million.

Another interesting machine is a hook loader with a Palfinger crane installation on a Scania P400 chassis (400 hp and manual transmission). The machine is designed to transport a variety of superstructures, such as containers for scrap metal. Cost: 9.8 million rubles. By the way, in this case, a mobile waste compactor from the German brand Hussman is installed on the chassis. The cost of such installations starts from a million rubles.

If Scania equips its garbage trucks mainly with Zoeller add-ons, then the German MAN took the Dutch company Geesink Norba as its partners. Its bodies are distinguished by its signature green color, and they are installed on the chassis in the city of Mtsensk, Oryol region. At the WasteTech exhibition one could see two MANs with such add-ons.

MAN TGM and TGS garbage trucks with Geesink Norba add-ons

The smaller one, on a two-axle TGM chassis, is equipped with a 250 hp engine, while the engine of the three-axle TGS already develops 360 hp. The gearboxes in both garbage trucks are ZF mechanical. The body volume of a two-axle vehicle is 15 cubic meters, while a three-axle vehicle is capable of taking on board 22 cubic meters of garbage.

The hydraulics develop such a frantic force that if, say, a thick wooden beam accidentally gets into the bunker, it will easily be broken without causing harm to the system. The pressing ratio of both bodies is seven. The price of a two-axle vehicle is about 10.9 million rubles, and a three-axle vehicle will cost 13.5 million.

You can also install the Geesink Norba add-on on MAZ

By the way, Geesink Norba add-ons are also installed on the chassis of Belarusian MAZ vehicles. There was such a car at the exhibition. Its body is similar to the “big” MAN, and the chassis is equipped with a YaMZ engine with a power of 310 hp. The price of such a MAZ is more affordable than that of foreign analogues - 9.5 million rubles.

Municipal vehicle on MAZ chassis with Faun superstructure

But Minsk residents also brought very unique cars to the exhibition. How do you like the Faun vacuum road vacuum cleaner on a specially designed biaxial chassis with a YaMZ engine (240 hp)? It can clean a strip 2.3 meters wide at a time. This is a prototype for now, but its estimated cost is already known: 8.5 million rubles.

And this MAZ is a super sewer cleaner

The device for flushing sewer networks from the Danish company J. Hvidtved Larsen looks quite unusual. The MAZ two-axle chassis with a 176-horsepower Cummins engine was also specially designed specifically for it. The tank behind the cabin is divided into two parts (for clean water and for waste) and allows you to both clean and flush the sewer. The miracle unit costs 13 million rubles.

And here is a modest garbage truck on a Fuso Canter chassis at the stand of the Moscow company EMG. This company installs bodies from the young Latvian manufacturer MTMing on truck chassis. The body on the Fuso is designed to hold eight cubic meters of debris, which can be compressed six times. Price - 4.2 million rubles. It’s funny that EMG can install a similar add-on on the Lawn Next chassis. The cost of such a garbage truck will be 3.65 million.

An interesting car on a two-axle Mazov chassis was at the Autobau stand. This garbage truck is equipped with a superstructure from HIDRO-MAK, which can not only collect garbage (compression ratio 6), but also wash containers behind it - for this there is a water tank and special rotating nozzles. The cost of such equipment is 7 million rubles.

This KAMAZ can lift containers with a crane

In general, the combination of several skills became a kind of trend at the exhibition. Thus, the Spetskommash company from Balashikha showed a garbage truck on a KAMAZ chassis with a Cummins engine, which can not only pick up bins in the traditional way - loading from the rear, but is also equipped with a crane for buried containers. With such a system, you don’t have to drive directly to the containers, because the boom reach is 10 meters. The crane installation, by the way, is controlled from a remote control. The compression ratio of the superstructure here is seven. And the garbage truck itself costs 7.7 million rubles.

Finally, a very unusual car from the Technotruck company on the Volvo FE chassis. It is part of a whole system for working with new-style containers (they do not smell at all and have a convenient sliding bottom). A superstructure with a waste compactor and a special Italian-made manipulator is installed on the truck chassis. The truck drives up to the containers, the driver presses a lever in the cab, and the container is automatically lifted and unloaded into the back. The cycle time is only one minute (a rear-loading garbage truck unloads one container in 4-5 minutes).

Such a system is now operating in Ulan-Ude, where similar devices are operating on a MAZ chassis. Each of them costs 22 million rubles, and the price of the Volvo presented at the exhibition exceeds 25 million.

Well, what if such innovations are not enough? At the RG-Techno conference, the KAMAZ electric garbage truck project was shown. But we will talk about it in a separate article.
