History of creation
Design work to create a new family of spacious, large-class buses began in the late 70s. The main differences between the LiAZ-5256 model and its predecessor - LiAZ-677:
- installation of three doors instead of two;
- replacement of a gasoline engine with a KamAZ-740 diesel engine;
- location of the power unit in the rear overhang.
The first copies of the new buses were put into operation as experimental models in 1982. Mass production of models began in 1986-1988. In the early 90s, production began of a suburban modification equipped with two doors and an increased number of seats. Depending on fleet preferences, models include one of the following power units:
- eight-cylinder KamAZ-740 engines;
- Caterpillar diesels combined with a ZF manual transmission or a Voith automatic transmission;
- Cummins diesel and gas engines.
In 2003 and 2005, the design of the machine was updated. Today Likinsky Bus Plant produces the following versions:
- city - 110 passengers, 23 seats;
- suburban - 88 passengers, 44 seats;
- intercity - has the largest number of seats - 44-45, the total capacity is 66 people.

Anyone who has driven a GAZelle knows all the pros and cons of this car. There is no point in talking about the disadvantages, everything is already clear. You can’t compare a foreign car and our cars, each has its own problems and shortcomings. I worked with foreign cars for seven years, was a repair manager for foreign cars, and I know first-hand what they produce in the West. How do you have to repair and operate it? With my income, a large family, I have to count money. My GAZelle doesn't eat money. Everything is within normal limits. You understand why our guys in our cars win at the Dakar, and not the famous world leaders. A normal master has both his wife and his car in proper use. GAZ 3221 holds the road well and starts easily in any frost. With my frequent trips with children, I have eight of them, and also my mother-in-law and wife, especially in winter it’s warm and cozy in the car. The GAZelle drives smoothly, the steering clearly holds the road, and the brakes are precise.
The electrics never failed, even in the severe frosts of 2010, and then the temperature dropped to minus forty. And in the car twenty minutes later “Tashkent”. When we got into a swamp at the dacha (it was difficult to drive there), the GAZelle slipped through with difficulty, and only got stuck once, but that was my fault. A car full of children, boards, two hundred bricks, various rubbish, and they “sat down” in the swamp. GAZ 3221 is a hard worker, a traction horse. I’m sure it will still be appreciated, as monuments will be erected to the “one and a half”. There was only one problem: the designers did not think through the height of the car, and the wheels would have to be made larger. In strong gusts of wind at high speed, the car can be thrown off the road. This happens to inexperienced drivers. On dirt roads, you can feel the car’s low ground clearance (don’t just say that this is a car for the city). I also wish the windshield wipers were more reliable. Apart from these little things, the car is great.

Before this, the car had only made a few trips to the country when the house was being built, and then I decided to work on it. Having a “nth” amount on hand, before starting to work, I decided to polish up the GAZ 3221. I changed everything that required it, arrogantly thinking that there would be happiness and I would earn a lot - but that was not the case. GAZ 3221 “Gazelle” is stable, every week, and even more often throws up surprises. Well, this is about reliability. The driving performance of this car requires special skill and skill. At first, my car was difficult to climb up the hill, until I realized that the best tactic is to accelerate before the climb and coast up it, because otherwise the engine “runs out” (the legendary UMP) and you begin to feel in your back how the drivers who are swearing at you they follow you at 40 km/h). The brakes are weak. The cabin is large - you can sleep if necessary. The gearbox, by the way, does not cause any particular trouble; it turns on normally. Well, to summarize, in principle the car earns 25-30 thousand rubles a week. The cost of spare parts and repairs is quite affordable, although you have to visit the service center quite often. It’s normal to drive a GAZ 3221 around the city only if you change the mirrors to larger ones with a repeater - otherwise an accident is inevitable. I would not risk driving a GAZ 3221 for long distances (1000 - 1500 km). I believe that if you have chosen the path of a driver, then you need to go through it. I bought a Gazelle Business GAZ 3221 in Nizhny, new in the showroom, because in my homeland I waited for the order for 3 months, and every day they fed me nothing but promises. And so I became the proud owner of a car, 12 seats, UMZ 4216 engine, the road ahead was a long one, and even under my own power. That same day I went home, the first sensations after 100 km were shaking, like the speed of a cart. 60 km/h, the seats in the GAZ 3221 squeak and move. The subsequent distance was covered at a speed of 80-100 km/h; after 3 days of travel in Omsk, I changed the engine oil and continued on my way - the shaking became noticeably less. Upon arrival in Krasnoyarsk, I installed an Italian gas pump, a 95-liter tank, and again hit the road for 1,100 km along the M-53. Consumption was 13 liters per hundred, now in the city there is 15-16 gasoline, 18-20 gas, taking into account that the car is not turned off in winter, only at night. I would like to note that during the haul nothing broke or fell off, the heater was good -25 I was driving in slippers and a T-shirt, I didn’t add oil to the engine and everything works, even the washer. Someone will say that the engine is bad - I had a ZMZ 405 which was constantly boiling in traffic jams, and I also got tired of changing the belt, the only thing that saved me was forcing the fan, one plus - in winter I don’t need a refrigerator at home, I have a GAZelle and no matter how you wrap it in cardboard close it, it still blows on the highway. This one pulls no worse up to 140 hp on gasoline, and there is also a function to prevent overheating of the 4216 engine at idle, if anyone doesn’t know, one cylinder is turned off and the speed increases to 1100 rpm. The daily mileage is about 400 km, now 24,000 km.
First of all, the generator belt whistled - it was tightened, the plate of the filler neck and the body (welded) fell off - it was torn off and thrown away. In the morning -39 I saw that the gas was “siphoning”, I was standing on the street, at the bottom of the heating element all the Italian hoses in the connections let gas through, even on the gearbox I had to warm it up with a hairdryer, install other clamps and coat all plastic connections with sealant. And this is for 35 thousand rubles. And then one day, one fine frosty day, it began to trip and twitch; a trip to the diagnostics did not yield anything; they just shrugged it off; in 5 minutes it was fixed; the ignition coil, which is located instead of a distributor on the second cylinder, was pierced and everything became as before. So for the entire period of operation of the GAZ 3221, 1 thousand rubles were spent on repairs. Not a single control light was on, and Jackie Chan could catch fire because of the candles.

The smell of a new car, power steering - “dear mother”. But there’s nowhere to put my left leg. That would be fine. I drove 10 km and now it starts. The poor thing twitched and coughed. Doesn't hold speed. And finally the Dzhekichan caught fire (well, check the engine), and I barely made it to the cabin. It stalled every 50 meters. In general, I aged a lot after that. And what have they been looking for for 2 days now, what’s the matter? They don't know. Mechanics with “rabbit eyes” are running around, the programmer, nervously squeezing, is programming something. In general, after 10 hours they said - buzz, take it away. Took away. 200 meters from the salon - the same thing. Nervous laughter. Back to the salon. The car is there. History repeats itself (with programmers). I went home sad, they took half a million, but there was no car. I see a man sitting in a GAZelle. The nameplate is “business”. I think, let me come up and ask, like a kind person, how is the machine? He answers - here are 60 thousand and all without problems. I knocked everything I could in the car. I think I'm superstitious. I say, it’s necessary, and without problems?! He answers - no problem at all. A couple of bearings, a stand, rebuilt the stove, power steering belt. I say - and this is no problem? Yes, said the man in the GAZelle. You're just out of luck. I thought about returning it to them - I searched the forums and it turns out that a simple guy couldn’t do it. You need to collect a bunch of papers and generally know what and where to say. So thanks to GAZ. No job, no money, no car. We are patient on the Russian plain. I'll tell you now how it all ended. The guys suffered for several days during warranty repairs, but they finally found it. The rough road sensor was glitchy. Well, you have to come up with something like that on a GAZelle. I drove another 200 km, everything seems to be fine so far. Although in small ways the GAZ 3221 is falling apart. Yesterday, the plug from the bumper that covers the towing ring mounting rod fell off. Why is everything so flimsy? At least I'm glad they gave away the car. And another note: in the “guarantee” I tell the guys, they say, put it in the book that I was with you - they say, why, if all the GAZelles were given these records, there would be no space left in a month. And I, scared and dumbfounded, left the salon.
