KamAZ-55102: popular Soviet agricultural vehicle

For a long time, in the Soviet Union there was a shortage of large-capacity vehicles for agricultural needs.
Already at the end of the 70s, engineers and designers of the Kama plant began to solve this problem. As a result, serial production of the KamAZ-55102 agricultural dump truck began in 1980; the last vehicle of this model rolled off the assembly line in our century. The new model had a frame design with a front engine, and was distinguished by a body with folding sides and unloading on the sides. Another difference was the color scheme of the truck, which was mainly painted orange. The underbody of the car is heated by exhaust gases. However, this model was also produced in the form of a chassis with an installed fifth-wheel coupling device, which made it possible to operate the vehicle as a piecework tractor.

Structurally, KamAZ-55102 is a three-axle frame truck (six by four wheel arrangement) with a cabover tilting cab, directly under which the diesel engine is located. The car was equipped with an old-style cabin with a metal bumper and a windshield divided by a molding. The first modifications had round headlights, then they were replaced with square ones. As already noted, most dump trucks were orange in color and used a hydraulic rod cylinder to raise and lower the body.

Transmission; steering and braking control; suspension

The car is equipped with a nine-speed manual gearbox with mechanical remote control. Depending on the modification, these can be domestic KamAZ gearboxes 152 and 154, or imported ZiEf gearboxes, ZF-9S brand. This option can now also be considered partly domestic.

Since since 2005, the ZiE checkpoint has been assembled in Naberezhnye Chelny from components imported from Germany. And since 2010, we have mastered the production of these components ourselves. Torque is transmitted from the engine to the gearbox via a double-disc dry friction clutch.

Serial production of this truck at the Kama Automobile Plant was launched in 1980 - it turned out to be so successful that it quickly gained popularity in the domestic market. During its history, the car was modernized many times, and after many years on the assembly line it was already “retired”.

The overall length of the KamAZ “55102” extends to 7435 mm, its wheelbase is 3190 mm (the distance between the axles of the rear bogie is another 1320 mm), and the height and width are 2630 mm and 2500 mm (3120 mm including external mirrors ) respectively. The minimum ground clearance of the car does not exceed 280 mm.

When equipped, the dump truck-tractor weighs 9,075 kg, and its load capacity reaches 7,500 kg. The total vehicle weight is 16,575 kg, of which 5,694 kg rests on the front axle, and 10,881 kg on the rear bogie.

This “agricultural vehicle” is capable of towing trailers with a maximum weight of up to 11,500 kg, working as part of a road train weighing over 28,000 kg.

KamAZ-55102 by default has a rectangular metal dump platform with three opening sides, three-way unloading and a hydraulic lifting mechanism. The length and width of the body are 5335 mm and 2320 mm, respectively, and the standard height of the sides does not exceed 635 mm (however, due to extension sides they can be increased by 620 mm).

KamAZ-55102 comes with several variants of power units - these are diesel V-shaped “eights” of the “740” family with turbocharging, direct “power” and closed-type liquid cooling, developing from 210 to 240 horsepower and from 667 to 765 Nm of torque .The engines are combined with 5- or 10-speed manual transmissions, a dry double-disc clutch and four driven rear bogie wheels with a locking rear axle center differential.

Depending on the modification, the maximum dump truck-tractor can accelerate to at least 80-85 km/h. In the summer, diesel fuel consumption for a car is 26.5 liters, and in winter – 29.2 liters.

The KamAZ “55102” is based on a ladder riveted frame with channel-section spars interconnected by seven stamped cross members, on which an all-metal cabin (with a two- or three-seat layout) is mounted. The front suspension of the truck is represented by a dependent system on two semi-elliptical springs, and the rear suspension is a dependent spring-balance design. The vehicle is equipped with a steering complex of a “worm” configuration, equipped with a hydraulic power steering. “Selkhoznik” boasts pneumatic brakes and drum devices with a diameter of 400 mm on all wheels.

On the Russian market of used KamAZ-55102 vehicles in 2022, you can buy them at a price of ~200 thousand rubles.

The KamAZ-45143 dump truck is equipped with a classic KamAZ cab located above the engine. The all-metal cabin of a new type, installed in the process of restyling common to all KamAZ models, is three-seater, with a high roof, with a berth. The power of any of the engines that are presented in the line for this model of dump truck is enough with a reserve. The motors are trouble-free and unpretentious. However, the manufacturer, as usual, “embellished” the fuel consumption figures in the performance characteristics. According to the testimonies of the owners of agricultural vehicles, twenty-six liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers of travel is never obtained. Less than 30 liters per 100 kilometers does not work, even with an empty body and without a trailer.

Cross-country ability is excellent. Naturally, the car is not suitable for a serious “safari” on muddy off-road and muddy roads, but if necessary, it will confidently pass even on very bad dirt roads. And he walks across the field completely without tension. In the cabin, according to the owners of KamAZ-45143, there is only the bare minimum of comfort. The seat is the most ordinary KamAZ, from which at the end of the shift “your back begins to hurt,” the interior trim, although modernized, is still “in the spirit of the good old days.”

However, the owners of “farm trucks” are ready to come to terms with all this: after all, a grain dump truck (as well as a seed, silage, hay and much more hauler) is, first of all, created for work. But he works hard, doesn’t let him down during the busy times, and the cost of ownership is not exorbitant.

There are a lot of used KamAZ-45143 vehicles offered for sale on the secondary car market in the CIS, especially in traditional agricultural regions.
