MTZ walk-behind tractors, description, development history, technical characteristics

The MTZ 06 walk-behind tractor is a powerful multifunctional wheeled device used for various activities in the agricultural and municipal industries. The unit is maximally adapted for work on heavy soils and is able to effectively cope with assigned tasks in difficult conditions of the domestic climate. The production of the walk-behind tractor is carried out by the largest machine-building enterprise in Belarus - the Minsk Tractor Plant. This class of equipment can be combined with various types of mounted and trailed equipment, which are widely represented on the Russian market today. Photo of MTZ walk-behind tractor:

Development of walk-behind tractors

Work on the creation of the first walk-behind tractor model began at the Minsk enterprise in 1978. The designers were tasked with making a single-axle machine capable of performing agricultural work in the field. At that time, farms needed to replace heavy physical labor and horsepower with self-propelled gasoline vehicles.

The mini tractor model produced at the enterprise was taken as a basis, and the development was given the index “Belarus” MTZ-05. The device cultivated the ground with milling cutters, which were installed on the drive axis, or with mounted tools.

Serial production of walk-behind tractors was established at the production sites of one of the MTZ branches - the aggregate plant (SAZ), commissioned in 1986. The first models were designated with the prefix “Belarus”, but later, after modernization of production, the index was changed to “Belarus”.

Design Features

The MTZ walk-behind tractor is made according to a classic layout. It contains a gasoline engine, a fuel tank, a transmission, a chain block, and a power take-off shaft. A design feature of the first and subsequent models is the ability to be aggregated with agricultural implements to perform agricultural work.

Interface with tools is carried out using a universal three-point hitch. Torque is transmitted to the executive body by the PTO.

In the series of walk-behind tractors, the developers used an innovative solution - there is no power frame in the design. To reduce size and reduce weight, the components are mounted on a cast iron transmission housing.

To increase the reliability of the device, they abandoned the belt clutch, which is installed on light motor cultivators. The transmission of torque and the separation of the power unit and transmission were done through a multi-plate “wet” clutch with manual control.

The drive of all models is equipped with a differential to improve cornering maneuverability. To prevent the wheels from slipping under load, the mechanism has a manual lock.

Reviews

Gregory, 42 years old:

“4 years ago I bought myself an old MTZ-05 with a faulty engine. After installing a non-standard 7 hp diesel engine. With. The reliable design of the Belarusian manufacturer has become my support in the garden. The “native” chassis, in which spare parts have not yet been changed, will give a head start to many similar mechanisms.”

Vitaly, 36 years old:

“I saw a MTZ-09N walk-behind tractor with a 9-liter Honda engine from a friend. With., with which he prepared hay in the summer to feed his animals, and in the winter he easily removed snow from a large area, I was “on fire” to buy the same one. I’ve only been using it for six months so far and only for working in the garden. During this time, there were no failures, the device started up properly, the engine kept its speed well, and the traction force was higher than my expectations.”

Walk-behind tractors of the Minsk Tractor Plant will become real assistants in work on small farms. High strength and wide functionality of the mechanisms will allow you to perform the entire range of tasks facing the farmer.

Pros and cons of devices

The mass production (about 350 units roll off the assembly line every month) indicates the demand for the devices. Users indicate the following advantages of the models:

  1. Compactness. It is convenient to store self-propelled equipment in a shed or in a garage next to the car - when folded, the walk-behind tractor does not take up much space.
  2. Maintainability. Thanks to the simplicity of the device and the availability of spare parts and consumables, minor repairs can be handled by an operator with minimal experience in servicing gasoline-powered equipment.
  3. Multifunctionality. Additional equipment is necessary to expand the range of tasks performed.

Belarusian walk-behind tractors are not without shortcomings. Users highlight several flaws:

  1. Lack of gear synchronization in the gearbox. The different angular speeds of the shafts mean that the speeds are sometimes difficult to switch.
  2. Imperfect differential lock. Design defects make it difficult to turn the device in a limited space, which increases the load on the operator.
  3. Limited access to the coupling unit. Lack of free space complicates aggregation with attachments.

Frequent malfunctions, repairs

Agricultural equipment operators are faced with failures related to the operation of the engine or transmission. Frequent malfunctions of walk-behind tractors:

  1. The engine does not develop the required power. Failure occurs due to clogging of the power system, formation of carbon deposits on the walls of the combustion chamber, and general degradation of the motor. After diagnostics, the defective parts are cleaned or replaced.
  2. Problems starting the engine. Difficulties arise due to malfunctions in the power supply or ignition systems. They will require cleaning and subsequent adjustment.
  3. "Floating" speed. Interruptions in engine operation occur when there is poor contact in the high-voltage ignition circuit. All wires are inspected, problem areas are crimped, sealing the connections.
  4. Transmission malfunction. Failures occur due to breakage of the clutch cable, control rods, abrasion of friction discs or destruction of gears. The malfunction is eliminated by replacing the defective parts.

Repairs to the device should be carried out in accordance with the instructions.

Choosing a walk-behind tractor

The applicability of a self-propelled vehicle on a site depends on its size, power parameters, and speed characteristics. The farmer needs to take into account the following data:

  1. Number of gears. Variability of speed modes is necessary for the apparatus for cultivating soil or moving loads.
  2. Width/depth of cultivation. The larger the parameter, the faster the land can be processed.
  3. Engine power. Torque reserve will be needed when cultivating heavy soils.
  4. Completeness of delivery. Dealers may offer devices with additional equipment.

Purpose

The main purpose of the walk-behind tractor is to perform operations on the ground and resolve issues related to utility work. The unit is in greatest demand when carrying out the following types of activities:

  • plowing and tillage;
  • soil cultivation;
  • planting;
  • harvesting;
