Only when you get close do you realize how big a car it is. The length is 5,135 mm, which is 235 mm longer than the short-wheelbase Volkswagen T6, 187 mm longer than the Ford Custom and 15 mm shorter than the Mercedes Vito. It's the same story with the wheelbase: 3,122 mm for the Citroen versus 3,000 mm for the VW T5, 2,933 mm for the Ford Custom and 3,150 mm for the MB Vito. True, the “French” is a little narrower than its competitors, but in height it is again parity. However, Jumpy illusions are not limited to size.

The next surprise is in the prices. How much can such a big car cost? In the rush of rates, many are already lost in prices and positioning. But from the very beginning of sales, the French were going to destroy their competitors precisely with the numbers in the price lists. Thus, the cargo version with a 1.6 liter engine (86 hp) and a manual transmission was supposed to be sold at a price of 999 thousand rubles. It was at least 200 thousand cheaper than competitors. Three years have passed since then, and the gap with competitors has become even greater. At least some competition can come from the Ford Transit Custom - it is only one and a half times more expensive than the base Jumpy, the other players are at least twice as expensive!

You're not bringing potatoes

Exactly, not potatoes: not only do we have the most expensive passenger version - the eight-seat Jumpy Multispace, but also with a full range of options, including a 163-horsepower two-liter turbodiesel, a six-speed automatic transmission, an additional left passenger door, rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control , alloy wheels and metallic paint. And still, the price will not reach two million rubles... In general, there is everything for life, well, or almost everything.

Why not? According to French tradition, there is no leather interior trim, which is generally understandable, and the velor seat trim creates a feeling of comfort. But the lack of navigation on our copy already looks strange, although in Moscow everyone has been using the Yandex.Traffic on smartphones and tablets for a long time, and standard navigation is by and large optional.

The rear liftgate opens into a huge trunk: even with the seats folded down, you can load 552 liters up to the luggage curtain, and if you load it up to the roof level, then even a cubic meter. If you fold both rows, the useful volume increases to four cubic meters.

The arrangement of passengers in the second and third rows is quite familiar for this class - three people each. Among the amenities are interior lamps and air ducts for the climate system.

Steer served

Opening the driver's door, you come across the parking brake lever affably raised in the opening. Everything would be fine, this position of the handbrake can be found on different models, but when the door is closed, the gap remains quite narrow, and not every large male paw will squeeze through it.

You get comfortable behind the wheel without any problems. It is adjustable in two planes and in a fairly large range. The seating position is lower than that of competitors, but there is so much space above your head that you can ride not only in a hat, but also in a top hat, if the driver of a corporate minibus comes up with such a whim. The remaining space above the windshield is divided into three shelves. In general, according to the French tradition, there are enough places to store small things. I was amused by the huge (about 5 liters) niche above the glove box - this is where you can dump all the trash and clear it out if necessary in one motion.

The front panel is the realm of hard plastic, but it does not creak, and is easier to care for. The steering wheel is covered with leather and fits well in the hands, but the automatic transmission selector with a cold metal trim on an early frosty morning is not at all pleasing.

The passenger version with an automatic transmission got rid of the disadvantages of the cargo version with a double passenger seat, where the pedal assembly is shifted to the right, but the signature feature with buttons for heating the front seats and recirculation remained in place: they are located on the ceiling!

Two words about climate control. It works, and not bad, hot air starts flowing in 10-12 minutes - immediately after the coolant temperature needle moves from the dead center. Not very fast, especially since warming up a diesel engine at idle is problematic.

Let's start

Citroen Jumpy is a large and quite heavy car (curb weight 1,733 kg, gross weight 2,683 kg), but 163 “horses” are enough for dynamic “embroidery” in traffic, even with an automatic transmission. Let's face it: until recently, French automatic transmissions brought little joy to drivers, and you don't have to look far for reasons; in Europe there are quite a few budget cars with automatic transmissions. But after the enchanting start of DSG boxes, Europeans started thinking about “automation” of the mass segment. And the new six-speed automatic transmission on the Citroen Jumpy works quite well, especially in normal modes. Well, if an emergency situation arises, then there is a manual mode of the box, and it is honest, and the box does not switch up on its own.

Leaving a tight parking lot does not create any inconvenience; huge mirrors and rear parking sensors help in maneuvering. A fairly large car turns well and surprisingly easily fits into the limited space of yards, but finding a place to park a car more than five meters long is becoming more and more difficult every year.

We leave the yard - and we are hospitably received by dense Moscow traffic jams... Here you can generally use the only brake pedal without touching the accelerator. The engine power is quite enough to get underway without accelerating, even on a slight incline. Fuel consumption on an empty car in city mode is a little more than 10 l/100 km.

Taking to the highway shows that the Jumpy Multispace allows you to feel normal in the left lane. At 130 km the car handles confidently even on a wet road, although it reacts rather nervously to gusts of side wind. Among the minuses, we can note that the wheel arches are not the best sound insulation, which, in combination with studded tires and a voluminous interior, prevents you from falling asleep while driving.

If we talk about the next oddities, then budget cargo versions with low-power engines go through joints and potholes much more harshly, and Jumpy Multispace elastically handles all the bumps, once again confirming the skill of the French as suspension specialists. There are no complaints about the brakes, as well as about the ABS system - everything works correctly and predictably.

We will have electricity to plow and sow

As expected, electronic assistants were crammed into the passenger Jumpy, and if most of them had to be encountered more than once on modern vans and minivans, then the modern generation of drivers almost does not remember such a device as a speed limiter (tempomats were popular in the mid-late 80s -s of the last century). Now its place has been taken by full-fledged cruise control, but the thrifty French didn’t hesitate to install a limiter. And it's convenient!

No, this is not a melodious bell that warns you when you exceed a given limit, or cruise control that turns off as soon as you press the brake. This is precisely a limiter, and it can be programmed to certain values: I set it to 79 km/h in the city - and no matter how much you press the pedal, the car will not go faster. It felt like the car had driven into jelly. At the same time, you can slow down and brake, the system remains activated. Convenient and cheap!

Summing up

Citroen Jumpy Multispace is a very unusual and practical car that will be useful for a large family or will become a reliable workhorse as a corporate transport. Especially considering its price, which ranges from 1.7-2 million rubles. And this comes with all the bells and whistles - as already mentioned, all competitors are twice as expensive. So the Citroen Jumpy Multispace illusions are worth the money.
