ZIL-130: technical characteristics and design features

Soviet technology is distinguished not only by high-quality assembly and high efficiency, but also by its versatility, thanks to which cars could be used in many areas of production. In this article we will look at the ZIL 130 truck crane, developed on the basis of a popular model of a Soviet truck.

The Likhachev plant produced the ZIL 130 truck crane in four modifications

History and modifications

To begin with, it is worth noting that the production of cars began in the mid-50s of the last century at the Likhachev plant. Over the almost fifty years of the existence of the Soviet brand, many different models and modifications of the ZIL 130 were produced, which were widely used in many economic areas. In the 70s, the car was even awarded the “State Quality Mark” award, for which many well-known machine-building plants competed.

Looking directly at the ZIL 130 truck crane, it must be said that its development began in the early 60s, and the first model was called KS 2571A. According to the plant management, it was the crane of this series that was the most popular construction device not only in the Soviet Union, but also in many countries in the post-Soviet space. The production of special equipment ended around the early nineties after the collapse of the USSR due to lack of funding, but even the old models of truck cranes continued to be very popular among builders.

On the basis of the ZIL 130 vehicle, many additional devices were created, which were intended both for construction work and for the fire, medical and agricultural sectors. As for the truck crane, it also has several modernized options.

Let's take a closer look at them:

  1. The most popular series is considered to be KS-2571, which includes models KS-2571A based on the ZIL-433362 and KS-2571A-1, based on the ZIL-431412.
  2. The KS-2571B model was produced on the basis of the ZIL-433362 with an additional power plant. It is worth noting that this truck crane was developed at the Stavropol Automobile Plant and is the latest crane of the KS series.

Purpose and functions

First of all, construction equipment moves well off-road and overcomes difficult terrain. The ZIL 130 truck crane was especially often used to transport heavy loads in bad weather, when ordinary vehicles could not complete the assigned tasks. All vehicles on which the truck crane is based are equipped with an eight-cylinder engine with a power of 110 hp. depending on the model.

One of the main advantages of the unit is its adaptation to Russian realities, thanks to which the vehicle easily maneuvers between construction structures and moves comfortably on roads. The purpose of KS cranes is actually much broader and it is used not only in the construction industry, but also, for example, by fire services. To date, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of some countries continues to operate Soviet units , noting their endurance and efficiency.

The truck crane operates effectively at low temperatures

Comparing the KS-2571 with other similar models of that time, it is worth noting its high load capacity, which is six tons. No medium-duty truck could boast similar productivity results, being inferior to the unit, both in power and in other characteristics.

An important advantage of the truck crane is all the basic capabilities of the ZIL 130 , which are further expanded thanks to special installations. That is, when buying a crane, you simultaneously receive a high-quality truck designed for use in various fields.

As for the scope of application, the KS series can be used in urban environments and in remote, hard-to-reach areas. The truck crane is easy to repair and does not require constant maintenance, and if handled correctly it will last for decades.

Specifications

To begin with, it is worth noting the car’s engine, which, despite its impressive dimensions, can still move at a decent speed. Depending on the model, the maximum speed reaches 70 km/h at maximum load. Like all similar models, the ZIL 130 truck crane is equipped with an eight-cylinder engine running on A-76 gasoline. The maximum lowering height of the boom is eight meters, and the lifting height is almost fifteen. Additionally, the unit has special crane equipment, which is used to grab the load and move it to the required height.

It is important to remember: early ZIL 130 models have a mechanical drive and are completely unsuitable for modern conditions, but newer machines are equipped with a hydraulic device and improved load capacity.

In total, there are three types of engine drives with which the ZIL 130 truck crane is equipped: mechanical, hydraulic and electric. As you understand, the highest quality and most durable is the hydraulic drive, found in the following series: KS2561-K; KS2561-K1; KS2561-E.

The truck crane requires virtually no repairs or additional maintenance

The main working device of the car is considered to be a retractable or non-retractable boom, powered by pneumatic cylinders and a special boom rope. The power of the equipment can be adjusted using a built-in gearbox or an ordinary gearbox.

Let's now look at the main internal technical characteristics of the crane. The maximum length of the ejected boom is eleven meters, and the minimum is 7.3 m. At the same time, the boom radius ranges from 1.9 to 10.2 meters. As for the engine power, for example, on the KS 2571A model, it is 110 kW. All KS truck cranes are developed on the basis of the ZIL 130 and have similar dimensions: nine meters long, two and a half meters wide and just over three meters high. The total weight of the unit does not exceed 11 tons.

Truck crane based on ZIL-130 and its technical characteristics

In combination with the model under consideration, as they write in many books, a KS-2561E truck crane can be used, the lifting capacity of which is 6.3 tons. Such a device is equipped with a mechanical drive.

The chassis is equipped with a stabilizer and a torsion bar.

Important! Folding outriggers are equipped with spring balancers that can be mounted using car jacks. To rotate the slewing ring, a roller structure is used.

A non-retractable lattice element is used as the main boom equipment . The main boom has a base length of 8 m, with reach varying from 3.3 to 7 m.

If you use outriggers, the lifting capacity will be 6.3 tons, without such additions - only 1.1 tons. When moving, the model can lift up to 1.6 tons, and the lifting speed will be from 0.97 to 13.1 m/min .

Truck crane ZIL 130: features

Depending on the boom height, the truck has different load capacity. On average, the tonnage of the unit at a height of 2-8 meters ranges from two to six tons, and at 6-14 meters from 0.2 to 3 tons. Actually, the algorithm for calculating the carrying capacity is extremely simple: the lower the height, the higher the tonnage. An additional advantage is the possibility of increasing the load capacity on some models, for example, KS-2571-A.

Many experts especially praise the maneuverability of the truck crane, which even modern Western brands can envy. The technical capabilities of KS cranes allow them to move freely along busy roads and in tight urban environments, where there is a high risk of collision with residential buildings. Despite its high speed, the ZIL 130 truck crane can transport large loads over long distances and simultaneously perform some other functions.

Due to the fact that the cargo unit was developed during a period of intensive technological development, it was based on some mechanisms that are still considered a real breakthrough in Soviet production. The design of the car included a new chassis and a special boom installation at that time. The ergonomic controls are positioned in the most convenient way, allowing you to keep all switches and instruments within reach of one hand.

One of the most popular and durable truck cranes is the KS-2751A-1 model.

As for the external characteristics of the truck crane, all wheels are protected by high-quality tires with additional deep treads. Visually, the ZIL 130 truck crane is an ordinary truck with a special power construction unit. The driver's cabin is spacious and comfortable, equipped with a high-quality air conditioning and heating system, allowing you to work in any weather conditions.

Birthday gift. LAZ-690 on ZIL-164A chassis from Kherson-Models

The original was taken from stevelar as a gift for birthday.
LAZ-690 on the ZIL-164A chassis from Kherson-Models The decision to produce truck cranes at LAZ was made in 1949. Moreover, the plans included a figure of 3,000 truck cranes annually. The Lviv Bus Plant managed to produce the first self-made truck cranes only in 1951. It was an AK-32 truck crane with a lifting capacity of 3 tons on a ZIS-150 vehicle chassis. To be fair, it should be noted that this was not a purely LAZ model; truck cranes of this type were manufactured by numerous factories throughout the USSR, only in significantly smaller volumes than prescribed by LAZ.

I took the photo from here. Thanks to the chief designer of LAZ V.V. Osepchugov, the AK-32 truck crane was improved at LAZ: first of all, this concerned the unification of all profiles and grades of materials used in the production of truck cranes. As a result, the weight of the crane was reduced by more than 500 kg. The modernized crane was named LAZ-690 and was mass-produced since 1955, first on the ZIS-150 chassis, and then on the ZIL-164 and ZIL-164A chassis. An external distinctive feature of the LAZ-690 truck cranes can be considered the mounting of the truck crane’s spare wheel, moved behind the cabin. The LAZ-690 was equipped with two types of crane operator’s cabins (let’s call them “early” and “late”). Cabs of the later type were required to have an external light on the roof. Information from here.

;">Probably, no collector can help but turn his attention to models of truck cranes, and therefore this area in itself is quite interesting, although it is more (as they like to say now) specific. Another thing is that, in addition to their specificity, they are also very expensive, and therefore ignored by many collectors. Until now, in any case, it was precisely this principle that I followed. There were truck cranes in the sandbox. Basically, of course, these were models of the rapid-fire Kostroma office SSM. Beautiful, but certainly not undeniable. Their first crane was the AK-75B (130), which they made with a logic beyond the control of an ordinary person, that is, the crane was made to work as a lifting and slewing crane (as a crane should be), but by some mysterious coincidence they immobilized the whole thing with glued cables -threads. This is exactly what vessto’s colleague talked about in his post. The second division of the office was KS-3575A (133ГЯ) as retold by colleague solmi74, many questions arose about it. Further, the same model in bright colors was described in detail by Chaga’s colleague. Taking a short break and distracting from the Kostroma model makers, then in one of the posts again from a colleague of vessto about a certain crane based on the KrAZ-250, it was indicated not just disappointment (as indicated in the title), but no less than a piece of shit from hand-assed idiots from Cimmeria . Later, he combined all these three taps in one post. Returning to SSM... No one in the sandbox began to talk about the LAZ-690 (164), which had something with the position of the boom, noticeably different from that in the photographs of the prototype. Apparently, there have been enough stories about the features of those cranes that were mentioned above. The same fate befell the AK-75 (164), the shortcomings of which were not telegraphed anywhere; She also covered the K-51 (MAZ-200), made movable-swivel-lifting-rotating, and in general practically magical (with a key under the removable panel on the crane installation!!!), especially if you watch a clip about its capabilities, however these possibilities became his main problem. So, after reading interesting and useful information, you have to steadfastly avoid models from SSM, because you can run into a catch with a proof guarantee. Models from workshops don’t seem to be praised either (to put it mildly), but still I took a risk. According to the tradition of dislike for Kostroma and the opposite feeling for small-scale workshops/masters. I've been planning for a long time, and finally bought myself a LAZ-690 truck crane on a ZIL-164A chassis for my birthday at the end of last year. Apparently, according to science (by analogy with the Kostroma one) it will sound like LAZ-690 (164A), but I’m not sure.

The front view will look like this: A little higher. The thread from which the cable is made and the boom support are clearly visible: The model still remained dusty, although I tried to shake it off. I don’t know how true the bumper is (below, at the end of the post, there is a photo of three cars based on ZIL-164 from different manufacturers, they are all different). The radiator grille is made non-through. The manufacturer's stamping is partially hidden by the boom block, but it is clearly visible. The worst thing that immediately catches your eye is the head marker lights. They are glued asymmetrically relative to each other: Top view: View from the left in the direction of travel. The handles of the driver's and passenger's doors are integral with the door itself: gas tank, spare wheel, left front support and, as far as I understand, power take-off. On the frame there are fastening screws(?): The boom is static: In the crane operator's cabin: There is a corresponding decal on the cabin door. The cabin door handle could have been etched: In the cabin there is an orange warning light of unknown purpose to me. It was made quite large, most likely not to scale. The purpose of the red plastic beam is also unclear: General view from the rear: I don’t understand crane installations, so I can’t speak for its credibility, but the hatches and all other elements are depicted very carefully: Another decal: All lighting equipment is painted red. In the right pair of lighting equipment, the right outer element (reflector?), despite the armor packaging, during unpacking (and maybe packaging) came off and was hanging on the so-called “nozzle” of plastic. Dokleil: Right view: Spare wheel - with hub. Ugliness:

View from below. The bottom is quite good: Obviously, X-M’s forms are already old: “Car in service”, Kherson-Models, DIP-Models and ALF. The eye is drawn to how narrower, and indeed smaller, the model from X-M is: Three-quarters from the top:

In a conditional traffic jam. The drivers of PAZ and ZIM came out for a moment: Car model: LAZ-690 truck crane based on ZIL-164A Prototype production period: 1956-1966 Manufacturer: Kherson-Models Release date: — Brief opinion: the first crane in my collection Rating: Quality: 4.5 out of 5.
