Engine Ural-6370
YaMZ-652 is an in-line diesel engine, turbocharged, four-stroke, compression ignition, six-cylinder, produced at the Yaroslavl Motor Plant since 2007. It is based on diesel trucks from Renault. YaMZ-652 was repeatedly exhibited at various events, as one of the evidence of modernity, manufacturability and innovativeness of production at YaMZ. In terms of emissions of harmful substances, this power unit corresponds to the fourth environmental class for off-road off-road vehicles - UN Regulations No. 96-02, No. 24-03.
The YaMZ-652 engine is equipped with a liquid cooling system, turbocharging and charge air cooling in an air-to-air heat exchanger installed on the vehicle (without an EGR system). The crankcase and the power unit itself are reliably protected from below by a steel pan.
- Working volume – 11.12 liters.
- Rated power: 303 kW, or 412 horsepower.
- Rated rotation speed – 1900 rpm.
- Maximum torque – 1870 N.m, or 191 kgf.m.
- Overall dimensions (Length x Width x Height) – 1286 x 955 x 1136 mm
- Engine weight – 970 kg.
- Engine weight including clutch – 1338 kg.
Cars of the Ural-6370 family have proven themselves well in conditions of intensive use, largely due to the solid reserve of torque of the YaMZ-652 engine. The horizontal arrangement of the filter in a two-stage air purification system makes it easier to replace.
Considering that Ural-6370 vehicles are used primarily and most often in areas with low temperatures, the installation of a powerful Teplo-Star liquid pre-heater is of considerable importance. It provides pre-heating of the engine in cases of long-term parking. And in conditions of extremely low temperatures, the automatic heater can also operate simultaneously with the YaMZ-652 engine.
Engine air supply system
Designed to supply air to an internal combustion engine, and also to prevent dust, water, dirt, etc. from entering the engine cylinder-piston group, it performs the function of cleaning the air entering the engine by using air filters, pre-cleaners, multicyclones, etc. d.

Transmission and axles Ural-6370
The transmission is assembled from European-made components. Clutch – “Sachs MFZ-430”: friction, dry, single-disc, with a diaphragm spring, hydraulic drive with pneumatic assistance.
The gearbox is one of the best currently available for heavy trucks of this class. The ZF-16S2220TD models have a manual 16-speed gearbox, with synchronizers in all gears, providing an exceptionally high level of vehicle controllability throughout the entire speed range. The Ural-6370 truck is also equipped with a ZF-VG2000 transfer case. The transfer case is mechanical, two-stage, with a cylindrical lockable center differential. Gear ratios: lowest – 1.536; the highest – 0.89.
Cardan drive – cardan shaft flanges with end splines. The front axle is driven, with steered wheels, and a separated main gear. The rear axles are driven, with a spaced final drive, with inter-axle differential locks, and with a lockable inter-axle differential on the middle axle. The differential lock control is pneumatic. The final drive ratio is 6.135. Bridges to Ural-6370 made in Hungary, “Raba Max”.

Cabin | |
Type | All-metal, double with or without a berth. Equipped with a ventilation system, liquid heating system from the car engine. |
New Ural car models are equipped with GRAMMER sprung seats. The sprung seats effectively dampen vibration and have a wide range of adjustments, allowing you to configure them as comfortably as possible. The seats are equipped with a three-point seat belt. It combines a shoulder and lap belt, but is a single section of the belt along which the buckle moves, making it easy to fasten or unbuckle. In the event of an accident, the braking force is distributed over a large area of the chest, shoulders and hip girdle, which makes it much easier to bear the impact. Three-point harnesses additionally prevent your torso from slipping under the strap, making them more effective. |
The berth in the driver's cabin is made in the form of a folding shelf. Fixation in the raised position is carried out using textile tapes. The free space under the bed can be used to store personal items or accessories needed on the road. On the side panels of the cabin there are pockets for papers and small accessories and holders for water bottles. The interior lighting of the cabin is provided by LED lampshades, providing sufficient illumination at night.
Additional comfort when driving is created by the cabin suspension consisting of four shock-absorbing elements. This type of cab suspension provides the greatest smoothness and effective damping of vibrations when driving off-road.
To maintain comfortable conditions when operating in sub-zero temperatures, the basic vehicle cabin is insulated on the engine compartment side and taped from the inside with heat-saving material.
Heating is carried out from the engine cooling system; when parked with the engine not running, the interior is also heated from the engine cooling system, where the coolant is heated by a pre-heater. The pre-heater guarantees starting the car engine at low temperatures (up to -45°C), extends the engine life, because allows you to avoid cold starting of the car engine. The heater also provides heating for the vehicle interior when the engine is not running. The PZD can work in conjunction with the car engine, which increases the efficiency of the vehicle heating system.
Visibility of the road at night is provided by headlights. A distinctive feature of the Ural-M road lighting elements is the transparent headlight element made of glass. Glass, unlike plastic, does not become cloudy over time and does not shake, which affects the quality of lighting.
Among other things, Ural-M vehicles are equipped with a new instrument panel with a combination of control indicators and a monochrome liquid crystal display that displays information from the vehicle’s diagnostic systems, providing control and timely detection of faults. Ural-M trucks are also equipped with an hour meter. |
Frame, suspension and chassis
All modifications of the Ural-6370 have an original frame with alloy steel side members of variable height. Frame of variable cross-section, width at the front - 95 cm, at the rear - 77.4 cm. Spar profile of variable height, cross-sectional dimensions of the rear part - 300 x 80 x 10 mm, front part - 210 x 80 x 10 mm.
Front suspension design. Dependent, on two longitudinal few-leaf parabolic (or multi-leaf) semi-elliptic springs, operating in conjunction with two double-acting hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers; with torsion bar stabilizer bar.
Rear suspension design. Dependent, balanced, with reaction bars, on double-longitudinal semi-elliptic springs, with a torsion bar anti-roll bar mounted on the rear axle.
Wheels Ural-6370 - “11.25-20”, steel, disc, with dismountable three-component rims, with conical landing flanges 5°; centered along the central hole of the disk. Tires 16.00R20 172F, model Bel-95 (“BelShina”, Bobruisk), pneumatic, radial, adjustable pressure, with an all-terrain tread pattern. The spare wheel holder is vertical, with a movable folding bracket and a wheel mounting beam. Raising and lowering the spare wheel is carried out by a hydraulic cylinder.
Steering and brake control
The steering mechanism of the truck is of the integral type. Booster pump –
with built-in flow and pressure valve. Working gear: screw - ball nut - rack - sector. The rack serves as the piston of the amplifier mechanism.
The working brake system of the truck is with a three-circuit pneumatic brake drive, an automatic locking system and an air preparation unit. The emergency braking system is one of the circuits of the working system. Parking operating system - with four spring energy accumulators acting on the brake pads of the wheels of the rear and middle axles. Auxiliary brake system: A compression brake is installed in the exhaust system.
Cart
So often repairmen call the chassis rudely. Let's see what the automobile plant from Miass has prepared for us this time. The general motive is this: everything is as it was, but it has become better. The suspension is traditional for this class of cars: longitudinal semi-elliptical springs and balancers. Low-leaf springs are not yet available on Miass trucks due to their low service life in difficult operating conditions. The load capacity of the front axle is 6500 kg, the load on the rear axles is calculated at 8 tons per axle. The basic configuration includes blocking cross-axle differentials for the middle and rear axles.
There are three wheelbase options for different superstructures, the distance between the axles of the rear bogie is 1400 mm. The frame is now, like many other manufacturers, reinforced with a “spar-in-spar” insert from the rear mounting of the front springs and almost to the end of the frame. The equipment of the new, fully pneumatic Wabco brake system, inside the frame, I found an air preparation unit with a filter-drier, which has long been the norm for European trucks. The brakes on all wheels remain drum brakes, but this is the norm for off-road vehicles.
The cabin is secured using a spring suspension at four points; the springs and shock absorbers are spaced at the front. In general, as I already said, what there were no complaints about before continues to remain in place, but outdated solutions are gradually being replaced by new components and assemblies, often imported or licensed, since, alas, our auto industry is not always ready to provide a worthy alternative, but using the example of this car you begin to believe that this ice has finally broken.
Truck cab Ural-6370
The Ural-6370 is equipped with a two-seat cabover cab, tilted forward, equipped with a full-fledged berth. Compared to classic Urals, in this cabin the level of comfort, interior decoration and workplace parameters (visibility and sound insulation) have been raised to unprecedented heights. The tilting of the cabin in order to get to the engine is hydraulic, with the possibility of duplicating the hydraulic drive with an electric drive.
This cabin is not original: the UralAZ designers used a proven, high-quality, excellent truck cabin. The spring suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers provides the driver with a decent level of comfort. The air-suspended driver's seat is equipped with a modern "Pilot" seat.
The steering column in the Ural-6370 cabin is adjustable in tilt and height. The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster. Electrical control of the side rear-view mirrors greatly facilitates their adjustment; for mirrors, as an additional option, electric heating is also provided. The upholstery of the engine compartment is made of material that is practical for immediate use.
Shining with a foreign cabin...
The main thing you should not forget about when dealing with a car is that this is a real 6x6 all-terrain vehicle! This is what the entire construct is subordinated to. This means that it is inappropriate to grumble here when climbing into a very high cabin with a solid engine tunnel and a low ceiling, otherwise you will not be able to maintain the permissible four meters of overall height.
But the sleeping area has been enlarged, there are curtains, and the “sleeping area” in the new modification has lost the unnecessary glazing - this will be both warmer and more reliable. The driver and passenger seats, manufactured under Grammer license, with spring suspension and weight adjustment, turned out to be comfortable, then not immediately, but I found a rough steering column locking lever and adjusted the unit for reach and angle, after which I sat proudly in the driver’s seat, content excellent overview and studying the gear shift algorithm with the operating methodology of the all-wheel drive transmission.
An updated one-piece instrument cluster with a domestically produced on-board computer display is now instead of an instrument panel with separate removable antediluvian instruments; recently I came across the same new “tidy” on a brand new KAMAZ, but has unification ever been detrimental to domestic trucks? In my opinion, only for the good. The central console resembles a chest of drawers and has been inherited for many years, but made according to a modular principle, it easily allows you to group keys and other devices and controls associated with all kinds of additional equipment and control of the superstructure.
By the way, there is only one floor lever in the cockpit, and without flags or toggle switches. For a 9-speed ZF gearbox (and this is what is installed here), this is enough, and the control of locks and centralized tire inflation is electro-pneumatic, using buttons.
According to a long-standing Soviet tradition, the panel has a lot of stickers instructing the driver so as not to leaf through the thick Talmuds of the “Operation Manual”, and a sweet two-pin socket for a portable lamp from the era of the first manned space flight. For some reason, I remembered how once upon a time I was visiting a successful farmer, I entered his simple and good-quality rural house in the Russian outback and was amazed at the unique combination of everyday items of almost ancient Russian life, peacefully side by side with the most modern and well-selected household appliances. It’s the same in the Ural-M, and not only in the cockpit.
Reviews about Ural-6370
There are still very few reviews about the new hoodless Urals: mass production started only a few years ago, few vehicles have been produced yet, and experience in their operation has not yet been accumulated. According to the drivers’ first impressions, the new “Ivekov” cabin is, of course, very good, but the rear window in it is “useless.” It only reduces the level of thermal insulation of the cabin, and just where the berth is located. Which, in the conditions of the Far North or Siberia, is far from the least important factor.
The dump truck designers provided for the installation of an electric drive for the convenience of tilting the cab; it was available on experimental and demonstration vehicles. But production machines on sale are equipped only with a hydraulic drive.
The quality of assembly of Ural-6370 trucks at UralAZ raises complaints. Some cars have leaking axles (especially the middle one), the rear engine mount breaks, there was a case of steering rods breaking while driving: the ends flew out of the crossbar (had to be welded). There are no complaints about the power reserve and cross-country ability of the Ural-6370.
