The DAF XF 105 is the flagship product line of the DAF Trucks NV brand, whose head office is located in Eindhoven (Netherlands).
The production of this truck is also carried out here. The DAF HF 105 was conceived as a tractor capable of transporting large volumes of cargo over long distances. However, this commercial model turned out to be in demand not only in the international transportation segment. The DAF XF 105 has become widespread in the construction industry, and various add-ons have significantly expanded its scope of application. The start of sales of the car turned out to be very successful - in 2007 it was awarded the “Truck of the year” award. Interest in the truck, which debuted in 2005, has not waned over time. Excellent technical capabilities have allowed the model to remain popular today.

Outside

Looking at the model released in 2012, you can see that it was equipped with a modern and technologically advanced Space Cab, and the instruction manual states that the model can also be equipped with a Comfort Cab. If you look at it more carefully, you can easily find the main differences from the previous version. This is the radiator lining, which has now become much larger, as well as the chrome molding on the lining. Perhaps, thanks to this restyling, the engine will be cooled even better.

The designers also worked on the exterior panel of the truck's cab. The steel bumper has special spot optics installed. The main optics illuminate the road with halogen lamps in anti-vandal and shock-resistant shades. The roof and sides are equipped with special aerodynamic streamlined panels. It is believed that this allows you to move more efficiently. A visor was installed along the windshield to reliably protect the driver and passengers from the sun. There are drawers on both sides where you can store spare parts or tools.

To provide convenient access to the car's cabin, specialists installed three steps and a handrail. Tests have shown that getting inside is indeed very convenient. To protect the interior from dirt or water, two of the steps are closed with doors. Attentive motorists will notice that the ground clearance has increased by 6 cm, which can be very helpful when driving on our roads. However, all the significant changes in the DAF-105 truck occurred not outside, but inside.

General information

In 2005, the Dutch brand presented a new family of trucks, the DAF HF 105, at the Amsterdam Motor Show. The model was supposed to complement the manufacturer’s product line, becoming a step above the DAF HF 95. However, the older family was unable to compete with the new product. At the same time, trucks were produced for more than a year, after which production of the DAF XF 95 was discontinued.

The 105th series differed from its predecessor by new engines that met the Euro-4 and Euro-5 environmental classes. The car was equipped with modern units with a capacity of 410, 460 and 510 hp.


There were few external changes to the DAF XF 105. The model was equipped with 2 types of cabins, which were made more spacious than the operator cabins of the DAF XF 95. The chassis was offered with wheel arrangements of 4 by 2, 6 by 2, 6 by 4 and 8 by 4. The interior of the cabin was radically redesigned. The engine tunnel has become lower due to the installation of a compact motor. The transmission lever was made foldable, and the parking brake lever was moved to the front panel. Such transformations added space in the cabin and made access to the sleeping compartment more convenient. The sleeping compartment consisted of 2 spacious shelves for relaxation, which were again used as a sofa. At the bottom there is a refrigerator and a storage compartment. Thanks to the folding ladder, climbing to the top shelf was not difficult.

Since 2006, the car has been sold on the Russian market. Long-haul tractors with a 4 by 2 formula have gained great popularity here.

Subsequently, the model underwent minor changes. The radiator trim grew somewhat in size and was supplemented with a beautiful chrome molding. The exterior panel of the operator's cabin has again been changed. Aerodynamic fairings appeared on the sides and roof, increasing fuel efficiency. Spot lights (two on each side) were installed on the steel bumper. The main headlights with impact-resistant shades were equipped with halogen lamps. The picture was completed by a sun visor near the windshield. Such changes have added to the attractiveness of the DAF HF 105.

Thanks to three steps located one above the other and specialized handrails on the side of the doorways, convenient access to the cabin was provided. The interior of the operator's cabin has changed slightly.

In the fall of 2013, DAF presented an updated version of the XF 105 long-haul tractor. Despite major changes in design and external improvements, the model index has not changed. The new version was characterized by a more thoughtful layout of the main units and a reduction in overall weight. The truck retained its signature style features, but became more solid in appearance. The restyled DAF HF 105 now has xenon headlights (functionally), a large radiator trim, combination lights on the front bumper, which immediately attract attention, and large mirrors painted in the color of the operator’s cabin, which again received built-in spotlights.

Since 2013, the car has been equipped with Euro-6 standard engines. Reducing the total weight made it possible to increase the efficiency of cargo transportation. The new flagship appeared before the introduction of the Euro-6 standard in Europe. Overall design changes have helped meet significant requirements and increase productivity.

The DAF XF 105 is usually used as a delivery vehicle for long-distance transportation of large volumes of cargo. The model provides maximum comfort and ease of driving and is suitable for Russian roads. In Europe, this truck is one of the most popular.

In the cockpit

If the external design has changed only slightly, then inside a lot has been changed compared to the base model. The first thing that catches your eye is the low tunnel. In the 2012 version, the distance from the engine compartment to the cabin ceiling is 175 cm. This was achieved thanks to a more compact engine design.

The lever that controls the parking brake is now located on the front panel. The gear selector was made foldable. On cars equipped with a ZF AS-Tronic automated gearbox, there are no levers on the floor at all. Such boxes are now controlled by convenient round switches and a steering column lever. As a result of such radical changes, more free space and more comfort were added.

The driver is offered a comfortable seat with shock absorption based on air suspension. The chair is equipped with all types of adjustments.

Car device

The car has a device that is standard for this type of transport. The design uses a 4-speed manual transmission, as well as additional elements - a divider and a range-multiplier. They are designed to simplify gear shifting, which has a positive effect on driver comfort.


The truck is equipped with two berths

Among the key design elements it is also worth mentioning:

  • disc brake system equipped with an EBS module;
  • front leaf spring and rear air suspension;
  • VSC, ASR systems, which increases driving safety.

One of the most important design elements was the driver’s cabin itself, which significantly surpasses all other analogues in terms of comfort and organization of control elements. It is equipped with drawers, shelves, a berth and other necessary components, which allows you to fit in the cabin with maximum comfort.

The starter also deserves mention, guaranteeing reliable engine starting even at low temperatures. The car's electrical circuit is much more complex than that of its domestic counterparts, which is due to the impressive amount of relevant equipment.

Hotel on wheels

What can I say, even in the previous model the interior and comfort could be compared to a five-star hotel, but now the DAF-105 car has practically a presidential suite. The shelf on the center console, and the console itself, are now covered with a nice and practical rubber mat, but for some reason the pull-out table and ashtray were not touched. So, if the driver suddenly wants to have breakfast or lunch, he can sit down comfortably, pull out the table and eat like a white man. There is no need to reach too far for groceries - the cabin under the bed has drawers for things, as well as a refrigerator.

To eat on the go, you can lock the refrigerator extended. There is a convenient pocket behind the driver's seat where you can insert a 1.5-liter bottle.

Sleeping area

An interesting nuance - the manufacturer refused to create a lower shelf with the possibility of transforming it into a chair with a table similar to a reserved seat carriage. But other truck manufacturers have been using this for a long time.

Here's the thing. If you read reviews of the DAF-105 truck, reviews of the car, then most drivers love an ordinary bed. Moreover, it’s not just a bed, but with a real solid mattress, and you don’t need to additionally transform your sleeping place. Here you can immediately lie down and sleep. It’s a pity that the base of this bed, like the ceiling, is not springy. They are made from ordinary plywood.

But the upper mattress has become significantly thicker. The Easy Lift locking system makes it very convenient to raise and lower the upper bed. It rises by forty-five degrees, and you can hang something, such as a towel, on the bar. You can put a bag with things on the raised bed.

Another new product is a folding staircase. It is made with wide rounded steps, they do not cut bare feet. The folded ladder is fixed using powerful magnets.

Instruments and everything around the driver

The dashboard of the DAF-150 has also changed somewhat. When it is already dark outside, it is illuminated with a pleasant orange light. If previously there was only a fuel meter on the panel, now designers and engineers have also added a “urea meter”. You need to pour not only diesel fuel into the tank, but also a special urea solution. Although in other tractors these indicators are displayed on the trip computer screen, here it is implemented in the form of an ordinary dial.

But there is a display here too. It is conveniently located on the center console. On it you can see many different indicators of the vital components of the car. You can also look at the axle loads of not only the truck itself, but also the trailer. However, it is still unknown how high the accuracy of these sensors is.

The steering wheel has buttons that are fashionable today. However, they will not be installed everywhere, but only on expensive trim levels. There will also be a retarder or an automated gearbox.

On the windowsill you can see a new control unit for glass and mirrors. The panel itself is made in a more stylish design - aluminum or wood.

The cabin seems to hint that the DAF-150 is indeed a real flagship, although it is slightly inferior in power to other competitors.

DAF XF105 truck engine

Paccar is written on the valve covers of DAF truck tractor engines. But this does not mean that these diesel engines are produced in the United States. DAF Trucks produces them at its engine plant in Eindhoven, Holland. Diesels for Euro 5 are Paccar MX power units with a displacement of 12.9 liters, in a power range of 360 hp. and 1775 N•m up to 510 hp. and 2500 N•m. Compliance with Euro 5 and EEV exhaust emission standards is achieved through the use of DAF SCR selective catalytic reduction technology.

The MX Series is notable for its excellent hydraulically controlled compression engine brake, which delivers braking force from 200 kW at 1500 rpm to 325 kW at 2100 rpm. This system creates effective braking on descents, which contributes to “savings” and extending the service life of the brake linings.

Paccar MX engines are very economical. In the latest generation, they are equipped with several technological innovations that provide lower diesel fuel consumption.

Innovative pistons, an optimized “Smart” diesel fuel injection system, and a unique, fully isolated exhaust manifold provide a real reduction in diesel fuel consumption and, accordingly, CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

The progressive design of the engine makes it possible to increase the intervals between scheduled engine maintenance cycles from 90 thousand kilometers and more. For example, if a centrifugal filter is installed and fully synthetic motor oil is used, the maintenance interval can be increased to 150 thousand kilometers. And this is a real reduction in operating costs, while achieving the highest possible level of efficient operation of the truck.

The use of high-quality materials, in particular compact graphite cast iron for the cylinder block and cylinder head, guarantees additional engine reliability, and the expanded integration of functions increases the reliability and durability of parts and components. In addition, the intake manifold is integrated with the BC head, and the oil filter, engine oil thermostat and oil cooler are installed in a single lubrication module. Overall, Paccar MX engines actually have 25 percent fewer parts. And this also significantly increases the reliability and service life of them.

The cable harness at the top is “hidden” in a durable braid of rigid polyurethane foam and is securely fastened so that its weight does not create additional load on the connectors. Provided: the absence of load on the connectors significantly increases their reliability. And also, the electronic control unit does not require separate cooling. This guarantees a reduction in the number of parts and greater reliability of the entire system.

At the bottom of the engine, the oil filters, oil thermostat and oil cooler are combined into a single lubrication module (as mentioned earlier). This is generally a completely new design, first used in the heavy automotive industry.

The manufacturer's speed limiter adjustment prevents the truck from exceeding 85 km/h. This saves approximately 3% of diesel fuel, which adds up to significant sums of money over long distances.

If the diesel engine idles for more than five minutes, its stopping system is activated (included in the basic equipment of all XF105 without exception). This is done for fuel efficiency and to reduce emissions.

The cost of servicing trucks of this model is relatively low, as can be seen by studying the prices for spare parts. If the vehicle has a minor breakdown, the driver can, for example, repair injectors or replace fuses himself, provided he has the knowledge and skills.

Raising the cab is not required for daily maintenance as the filler necks are located close to the front panel. If there is a need to check the operation of any components, it can be raised using a convenient hydraulic lift.

Most often, Dutch DAF trucks do not require significant repairs, with the exception of the turbine, which periodically fails. This is typical for most diesel cars, but it is quite simple to fix such a malfunction - by contacting a service center or performing the manipulations yourself.

Engines

The model has two engines - the PACCAR MX 300 with a power of 410 horses and the MX ATE EcoDrive with 460 hp. With. Volume – 12.9 l. The first unit is highly environmentally friendly. The most modern technologies were used in its creation, so it fully complies with the strict Euro-5 standards. Among other advantages of this unit is the SMART injection system and the SCR system. This made it possible to significantly save on fuel without losing power and torque.

Engine power is 410 hp. With. Nominal crankshaft speeds range from 1500 to 1900 rpm. Torque – 2000 Nm at 1000-1400 rpm.

The second unit, despite its excellent characteristics, has environmental friendliness parameters no worse than the first. The owner's manual states that it needs scheduled maintenance every 150 thousand km.

As for the revolutions, everything is the same here - 1500-1900. But the torque has been increased - 2300 Nm at speeds from 1000 to 1410. The working volume of this unit is 12.9 liters.

In order to simplify long journeys, the automaker's engineers introduced an additional fuel capacity into the truck's design, which allows the existing fuel tank to be expanded by 100 liters. This has a positive effect on the distance the truck can travel without refueling, which is especially important when driving in remote areas.

Platform

The chassis of this truck tractor has a wheelbase of 3.8 meters and a rear overhang of 0.99 meters. The fuel tank can hold 850 liters of diesel fuel, while the urea tank has a capacity of 100 liters.

The chassis is not reinforced with side members, but the machine can easily withstand axle loads, as well as other load-bearing loads, provided that they do not exceed the nominal ones too much.

All this thanks to the use of high-quality steels. Also responsible for strength is the closed profile between the most important power units. The tank is made of aluminum - this is great, because it will not be subject to corrosion.

Transmission

There are several options presented here. So, there is an AS Tronic type gearbox with 12 steps. The Hill Start Aid system is available as an option, making it easier to start at large angles. This system can come in handy when you need to start on a big hill. This is quite difficult to do with a loaded trailer, especially in winter. The gearbox is equipped with a direct top gear.

This box makes engine wear minimal, and additional systems make driving the tractor simple and comfortable, regardless of conditions.

But, as you know, even the most highly economical engine itself does not necessarily provide low diesel fuel consumption; The gearbox and rear axle are no less vital in this matter. This is why DAF places great emphasis on integrated optimum transmission technology. The new integrated retarder, plus a higher rear axle ratio, provides the optimum, best-in-class combination of performance, efficiency and light weight.

The Paccar MX diesel engine has significantly higher torque than the previous generation of XEC engines. This allows comparable performance to be achieved with less effort and lower speed. Therefore, "faster" transmission options are used, with lower RPMs at average operating speeds, while maintaining a high level of performance.

XF105 trucks offer a wide range of rear axle ratios, including fast 2.80, 2.69 and 2.53 ratios. These ultra-fast rear axle ratios are well suited for lower mid-range engine speeds, ensuring optimum fuel efficiency.

DAF Trucks does not produce gearboxes and clutch mechanisms on its own: gearboxes are purchased from the German company ZF, and clutches are also made in Germany - from Sachs. But the same components and parts are used by DAF’s closest competitors - Renault, Iveco and MAN, as well as other automakers around the world (including our Kama Automobile Plant, for example).

You can choose from a 12- or 16-speed manual gearbox, as well as an AS-Tronic automatic transmission (also 12-speed ZF AS Tronic 12 AS 2330 or 16-speed ZF AS Tronic 16 AS 2630 OD) – to transfer energy to the hypoid rear axle of the DAF. The truck can also be equipped with a drive axle with wheel reduction gears for operation in particularly difficult conditions.

The sixteen-speed “mechanics” helps to “finely chop” the range of gear ratios and more accurately adapt to the current road situation and load. The modern ZF Ecosplit gearbox is equipped with pneumatic reinforcement on the Servo Shift shift mechanism.

The Hill Start Aid (HSA) system, which these automatic transmissions are equipped with, provides assistance when starting off on a hill, the Eco Roll function makes it possible to coast on a descent or even with the engine completely turned off, and the Fast Shift system makes it possible to switch from 11th speed to 12th without using the clutch, which also somehow improves efficiency.

Brakes

The most important feature here is the dedicated brake motor. This motor, which is started via hydraulic systems, is mounted in the valve rocker arms. With this motor you can create significant brake forces.

The entire braking system is capable of delivering 210 kW of power. The system also includes a parking brake. Additionally, there is ABS, EBS, an electronic regulator responsible for engine braking.

Device

The DAF XF 105 is equipped with a completely flat chassis with the ability to install any superstructure. The car frame is made of high quality steel. There are special holes made in it to allow the body to be attached. Elements of the brake system and air cylinders are hidden inside the chassis, due to which the volume of the truck’s fuel tanks was increased. There is no internal reinforcement of the side members for this model, but the truck can easily withstand significant loads on the load-bearing parts of the body and axles. Moreover, the DAF HF 105 confidently copes with an overload of 5-10% due to the high-strength alloy steel used in the chassis. Additional strength is provided by a closed profile located between the main strength elements. The main components are mounted according to the standard scheme. The batteries and muffler are installed on the right side, the exhaust on the left. The car's fuel tank is made of aluminum, which eliminates the possibility of corrosion and problems associated with exposure to the external environment. All versions of the DAF XF 105 are equipped with a reliable Jost JSK37 towing system made of cast iron. The trailer is connected to the vehicle's electrical network via a 7-pin connector.

Another important feature of the DAF HF 105 is the presence of an MX brake motor. The complex motor, securely integrated into the unit's valve rocker arms, is driven hydraulically. This creates increased braking force. The system operates in conjunction with a specialized brake retarder, collectively producing a power of 210-320 kW. The design provides a parking brake. The DAF XF 105 is equipped with the following options:

  • EBS (electronic braking system);
  • EBS (2-circuit pneumatic system with electronic control);
  • ABS (anti-lock braking system);
  • SMR (electronic engine braking regulator).

The brakes have ventilated discs front and rear. Again there is an air compressor built into the heated dryer. Thanks to the advanced braking system, the truck is safe to operate even in difficult conditions, and the braking distance always remains minimal.

The truck's transmission includes a 12-speed AS Tronic gearbox with Hill Start Aid. The technology is especially useful on inclines when the trailer is heavily loaded. The gearbox has a direct top gear (gear ratios - 15.86-1.00). The gearbox itself is distinguished by its significant efficiency and a variety of auxiliary systems that ensure minimal wear on the power plant.

DAF HF 105 is equipped with 2 types of cabins:

  • Space Cab with an internal height of 1735 mm;
  • Super Space Cab with an internal height of 2105 mm and increased berth dimensions.

The interior itself is designed with drivers in mind and has many small details that make it incredibly comfortable. The chair is made of specialized breathable fabric with leather elements. Additional comfort is provided by lateral support. The seat has its own air suspension, which, combined with the main air suspension in the operator's cab, works so well that the driver and passengers do not feel any unevenness in the road at all. again, the operator’s cabin has parking locks that minimize the risk of intruders getting into the cabin.

As standard, the car is equipped with:

  • cabin air filter;
  • electric windows;
  • air conditioning system;
  • information display;
  • additional heating for the operator's cabin;
  • connector for additional equipment.

"DAF-105" - price

A truck with a 410 engine with low mileage can be purchased for 5.1 million rubles. And a 2011 car with a 460 engine and a mileage of 145 thousand km can be purchased for 3.5 million. Despite the mileage, the cost rarely drops below two million.


These machines have excellent characteristics. The cabin makes transporting goods a pleasure.

The new 2013-2014 model, of course, will cost much more, but rest assured, it is worth every ruble invested in it. With proper and timely care, the car does not even need repairs. “DAF-105” is an unpretentious truck, which is why we love it among all truck drivers. And the 2013 model is absolutely fantastic.
