The modern Farmer is similar in appearance to the classic Gazelle, but restyling has made some changes to the exterior. In particular, it is impossible not to notice the improvement in the radiator grille, the straightened bumper, the enlargement of the rear-view mirror mugs and the new teardrop-shaped optics with halogens. Body parts have clearly become more attractive, repeating the curves and lines of modern foreign-made cars.
The Farmer's cabin itself is made of a central aluminum base, has enviable AED contours and is designed in an elongated format. However, despite this length, the Farmer received only 2 passenger doors.
The Farmer's salon has a 2-row six-meter salon, the layout of which is the following: 2 seats in the front and 4 seats in the back. This layout clearly distinguishes the Farmer from the traditional Gazelle. On the other hand, one can only dream of a large space between the seats. The modest interior design, not very comfortable seating in the second row, and much more also raise questions.
The first release of the Farmer was generally met with hostility, because the salon ergonomics turned out to be very modest. Later, when restyling was carried out, attention was paid to this point, although not at the proper level, but still. The interior was modernized by introducing a new dashboard, higher quality plastics and a general expansion of basic equipment.
As for the engines, they were borrowed from the classic Gazelle - three gasoline power plants and one diesel.
GAZ-3302
GAZ-3302 is the debut representative of the huge GAZelle family, which appeared about 20 years ago. The model quickly gained popularity and began to be used everywhere. Initially, the GAZ-3302 was a small-tonnage on-board vehicle designed to transport cargo weighing 1,500 kg. This modification of the equipment is still produced today (in the GAZelle-NEXT and GAZelle-business families). The Gorky Automobile Plant offered about 20 main versions of the model. Additionally, a van based on the GAZ-3302 was available, for which the booth was placed on a clean chassis. For the “farmer” modification, a cabin with two rows of seats was installed.
In fact, the car became the pioneer of a large family. Her debut took place in 1994. For that time, GAZelle had good technical characteristics and was in demand. Its compactness allowed the car to move around rural areas and in city traffic as efficiently as possible.
The maneuverable vehicle was used to transport special equipment and work crews and soon became simply indispensable at construction sites and in production. The GAZ-3302 was also used to perform emergency and repair work. Thus, modifications with gas cylinder equipment appeared, which are very popular on the Russian market.
Low-profile tires ensured a minimum loading height (only 1 m). Advanced solutions used to create the cabin have significantly expanded the driver's visibility. At the same time, the model was modernized several times, improving consumer parameters. Its main feature was significant fuel savings while maintaining optimal technical characteristics.
In addition to the classic body, an enlarged version with a platform length of 4 m appeared.
GAZ-3302 is a two-row rear-wheel drive tandem pickup truck with varying capacities. Thanks to the possibility of installing various bodies on the chassis of the model (dump truck, tow truck, refrigerator, isothermal van with temperature control, add-ons for transporting bread and others), each consumer could get what he needed.
For all modifications of the GAZ-3302, specialists from the Gorky Automobile Plant took into account the peculiarities of domestic roads and climate. As a result, the cars effectively withstood almost any operating conditions. The most popular versions of the model are:

Note that some of the latest modifications of the car have acquired a Chrysler power plant with an optimized piston system, which has significantly increased engine life.
GAZ-3302 was not without shortcomings typical of domestic cars (especially the first versions). However, the simplicity of the design, affordable cost and maintainability ensured its steady demand in the domestic market.

Modifications older than 10 years are characterized by increased fuel consumption. Instead of 11-12 liters per 100 km indicated by the manufacturer, the car consumes 15-16 liters. In some cases, consumption reaches 20 liters per 100 km.
More recent versions (especially those with a Cummins power plant) do not have such problems. Here fuel consumption is 9-10l/100 km.
Engine
GAZ-3302 is equipped with three power plant options:
- domestic engine "UMZ-42146", running on gasoline. This unit complies with Euro-4 requirements. Displacement – 1.9 l, rated power – 106 hp, maximum torque – 220 Nm;
- foreign unit Cummins ISF 2.8. Diesel engine with charge air cooling and turbocharging. The power plant meets Euro-4 requirements and has the following characteristics: displacement – 2.8 liters, rated power – 120 hp, maximum torque 204 Nm;
- domestic motor "UMZ-421467". A special modification that runs on gasoline and gas. In this case, the buyer can choose gas equipment independently (CNG-methane or LPG-propane).
Modifications with domestic power plants have become very popular due to their lower cost and minimal maintenance costs. Versions with the Cummins ISF 2.8 engine were distinguished by a longer service life and increased reliability.

The growth in sales of GAZ-3302 indicates the popularity of the car. Moreover, the model itself is available today in two main versions: chassis and onboard version. The latter has already become a real bestseller in the segment of light-duty trucks. The affordable price makes the car more attractive compared to its competitors. However, the car is not without weaknesses.
The sides of the model's body are the main problem. In the first versions they had to be changed quite often. In rare cases they served for more than 10 years. In the latest modifications, the sides began to be primed, but this only saved it for a while. As a result, the metal had to be welded. The use of cathophoresis priming, double-sided galvanizing and phosphating of surfaces did not improve the situation.
The car is equipped with a spring-type suspension, the peculiarity of which is the presence of special telescopic shock absorbers. The design provides for the rear suspension to be equipped with a mechanism that reduces roll when cornering. The GAZ-3302 brake system includes drum and disc mechanisms. There is also a dual-circuit hydraulic drive with a pressure regulator.
The hydraulic booster is installed only on the latest modifications of the model. It is missing on older versions, which is a significant drawback. At the same time, the hydraulic booster itself causes a lot of criticism. Many car owners complain about regular leaks that recur over and over again even after the problems have been fixed. The reference mark is 10,000 km. If the hydraulic booster does not leak during this period, it will last for quite a long time.
The GAZ-3302 is equipped with a 5-speed gearbox, which also received a lot of critical reviews. Moreover, repairs usually give only a short-term effect, and the owner, who decides to save on replacing the gearbox, ends up spending much more money. True, for models released later than 2011, such problems are extremely rare.
The model has drum brakes at the rear and disc brakes at the front. This allows the driver not to worry about traffic safety, regardless of road conditions and speed.
But the handling of the GAZ-3302 leaves much to be desired. The car is made on a frame base and does not always clearly follow the driver’s commands. The model's suspension is designed for systematic cargo transportation.
Initially, the car was equipped with cabins that were not the best in terms of comfort. However, in recent modifications this element has changed a lot. Specialists from the Gorky Automobile Plant borrowed it from the light-duty Ford Transit, which added convenience. The GAZ-3302 cabin accommodates a driver and 2 passengers. The torpedo of the model immediately catches the eye, and an additional advantage is good visibility. Not the highest performance is compensated by safety.
Spare parts for cars are produced in large quantities, so finding them will not be difficult. However, the quality of the elements is not always high, since many enterprises produce them.
Features of GAZ-3302:
- Lighting and electrical wiring in a car must be replaced every 10 years, as wires fall apart and circuit boards oxidize;
- modifications before 2007 have a weak stove;
- the GAZelle doors can be opened with a screwdriver;
- the car has a weak frame;
- the seats in older versions are not comfortable enough and cause some inconvenience even when traveling within the region;
- in versions released later than 2011, many problems were fixed and there were much fewer complaints about them.

Depending on the version, the cost of GAZ-3302 varies. The standard modification in the basic version will cost 580,000 rubles. With additional settings, the price can increase to 780,000 rubles. Modifications with a Chrysler power plant cost 30,000-50,000 rubles more.
Used versions of the GAZ-3302 are offered in a wide range. The average cost of models produced in 1999 is 100,000 rubles, and those produced in 2007 are 230,000 rubles.
