We present to your attention a new development of KAMAZ - the KAMAZ-65805 mining dump truck, which received its own name "Atlant". This is the first of a future line of mining dump trucks from the Kama auto giant. It should be noted that KAMAZ is entering this segment of the truck market for the first time.

Externally, Atlant continues the design line started by KAMAZ in new dump trucks, but differs significantly from its counterparts in length (12 m) and load capacity (60 tons). It is no coincidence that it received the name in honor of the ancient Greek giant - at the moment KAMAZ-65805 is, of course, the largest dump truck created in Naberezhnye Chelny. At the same time, according to the designers, it is the smallest of the future family of mining trucks.

The vehicle was created specifically for transporting rock and ore. At the same time, the dimensions of the vehicle are within the limits allowed for movement on public roads, which significantly simplifies transportation. Typically, mining dump trucks are significantly larger in size than the standards and can only be driven in quarries. Atlant can come to the place of work under his own power and leave it if necessary.

The curb weight of the vehicle is 27 tons, the load capacity is 60 tons. The load on the axles is distributed as follows: 12 tons each on the two front ones and 21 tons each on the three rear ones. The total weight of the KAMAZ-65805 dump truck is 87 tons.

KAMAZ is starting to fight for the market of quarry equipment: prototypes of Atlant dump trucks have already been presented, and the design of the Jupiter family with a load capacity of more than 100 tons is underway. The stated goal is to oust BELAZ from the Russian market.

The first Atlant was presented last year - a five-axle road-size dump truck KAMAZ-65805 with a gross weight of 87 and a load capacity of 60 tons. In April of this year, its “big brother” KAMAZ-65807 appeared with a carrying capacity of 65 tons and a total weight of 90 tons. It has the same 10x6 wheel arrangement with three steered axles (first, second and fifth), but is much wider - 3500 mm versus 2530 mm.

Both Atlantas are equipped with new 12-liter KAMAZ-910.10 diesel engines (P6, Euro-5), but of different power - 500 and 550 horsepower. Transmission – hydromechanical 7-speed. The cabin is the latest generation K5. Both dump trucks are assembled as Autonomous Ready, that is, they are ready to turn into drones; all that remains is to install elements of machine vision, sensors, communications and a decision-making unit.

In general, Atlant is a whole family of mining dump trucks with 8x4 and 10x6 wheel arrangements and a carrying capacity of 45 to 70 tons. The 60-ton tanker is planned to be the first to go into mass production, and already in 2022.

But if the “Atlantas” are, in fact, regular KAMAZ trucks enlarged in size with a reinforced design, then the promising line of “Jupiters” is already a real career “classic”, directly challenging the BELAZ dump trucks.

This is what KAMAZ “Jupiter” will look like with a lifting capacity of 125 tons. This is a photograph of a poster that was demonstrated at the STC pilot production site during a recent visit to the plant by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. KAMAZ did not provide any official information on this vehicle; the reports on the Prime Minister’s visit did not even mention “Jupiter” - apparently, this is a secret development for now.

It is known from other sources that the Jupiter family is segmented into classes according to load capacity: 90-100 tons and 125-150 tons (competitors of the Belarusian BELAZ-7557/7558 and BELAZ-7513, respectively). KAMAZ "Jupiter" mining dump trucks will be able to operate in both normal and unmanned mode. They will be unified with each other - a single platform and component base will be provided. Engines – diesel or gas (methane).

“Jupiter” stands apart with a carrying capacity of 220-260 tons. This will be a robotic, cabless, shuttle-type mining dump truck, that is, with the ability to move forward and backward without turning. It can be equipped with either a diesel engine in combination with an electric transmission or electrochemical energy storage devices (batteries).

The best technical universities in Russia were involved in the development of this project - Kuzbass State Technical University named after. T.F. Gorbachev (KuzGTU) and Moscow State Technical University. Bauman (MSTU). According to the Institute of Energy Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the project received funding from the federal budget in the amount of 250 million Russian rubles (approximately $3.5 million). Another 75 million rubles ($1 million) will come from extra-budgetary funds.

At present, the development of the preliminary design of the Jupiter shuttle has already been completed. By the end of this year, technical projects should be ready; in 2022, a hardware and software complex for a robotic dump truck and a digital dispatch system will be created and tested; for 2023, it is planned to manufacture a prototype of an unmanned dump truck and conduct its tests.

Then serial production of unmanned shuttle-type mining dump trucks should begin. At least 3 units will be produced in 2024; in 2025 – at least 5 pieces; in 2026 – at least 10 pieces; in 2027 - at least 15 pieces. Potential demand for unmanned shuttle dump trucks of the Jupiter project after reaching full production capacity is predicted at 100 units per year. There are already pre-orders for Jupiter 220 dump trucks from large Russian coal mining companies: JSC Holding Company SDS-Ugol is ready to purchase 75 units, SUEK – 125 units.

As for pricing, marketers cite the following figures. The average market price for BELAZ-7530 dump trucks with a carrying capacity of 220 tons is 175 million Russian rubles (approximately $2.43 million). The price for dump trucks of the same carrying capacity of the Liebherr, Comatsu, Hitachi brands is 245 million Russian rubles ($3.41 million). For serial production, KAMAZ plans to reach the level of 200 million Russian rubles ($2.78 million) for one Jupiter 220 dump truck. Thus, despite the innovativeness of the technology (cabless autonomous vehicle), the price will be in the BELAZ segment - the most popular segment of the market.

If we talk about the geography of supplies, KAMAZ does not hide: the goal at the first stage is to enter the Russian market and completely oust BELAZ and Chinese manufacturers from it; The goal at the second stage is to enter foreign markets. Such information is contained in the Terms of Reference for the Jupiter project, which must also be signed by the Deputy General Director of KAMAZ PJSC - Development Director I.F. Gumerov.

But if KAMAZ is now only designing unmanned mining dump trucks, BELAZ has already included in its serial production program robotic dump trucks of two families with a carrying capacity of 90 (BELAZ-7558R) and 130 tons (BELAZ-7513R). Such machines, created on the basis of serial samples, are already operating both in Russia and Belarus. So far with cabins, but in unmanned mode. The first model of an electric dump truck powered by batteries, the BELAZ-7558E with a lifting capacity of 90 tons, was also created in Zhodino. We talked about him.

Returning to KAMAZ, we will add that the Jupiter family also plans to include an unmanned shuttle dump truck with a lifting capacity of 30 tons. It received the index 6559. BELAZ does not yet have autonomous dump trucks of this class. But it won’t be difficult for Belarusians to robotize, for example, serial 32-ton BELAZ-7544 trucks, if only there were orders.

Another promising new product of KAMAZ PJSC is the Hercules off-road articulated dump truck with a lifting capacity of 40 tons and a total weight of 75 tons. On June 3, M. Mishustin was shown its prototype without a cabin. But maybe he won't need it either.

KAMAZ already tried to launch the production of dump trucks of this type five years ago together with the South African company Bell, but things did not go beyond the production of a limited batch with Russian platforms.

Nevertheless, KAMAZ is currently planning to launch a whole family of articulated dump trucks designed to work in difficult conditions. At the same time, “Hercules” are designed with both a 6x6 and 4x4 wheel arrangement; both in conventional and unmanned versions. Such machines can be used in extremely difficult off-road conditions, typical both for road filling and for stripping operations at new mineral deposits.

And here KAMAZ can become a competitor to BELAZ, whose product line includes off-road dump trucks with a 6x6 wheel arrangement and a load capacity of 27 (MOAZ-75041), 36 (MOAZ-7506) and 50 tons (MOAZ-75035). All three are produced at the Mogilev Automobile Plant, which is part of BELAZ Holding.

What can we say in conclusion? The global ambitions of the management of KAMAZ PJSC are not new (the Russian manufacturer has taken up the development of chassis for strategic missile systems, is actively developing the market for passenger vehicles, and has started producing electric buses). The desire to create its own production of mining dump trucks for Russia, which is developing colossal reserves of natural resources, is not surprising. And competition is common for BELAZ. I would only like the competition to be on equal terms.

The truck is designed for transporting rock and ore, and is equipped with a special dump platform, which has an increased thickness of the bottom, walls and sides. There is a powerful protective canopy that completely covers the cabin, protecting the driver from falling rock debris. And a special system for heating the platform with exhaust gases from the engine solved the problem of cargo freezing to the body in winter. The platform's elevation angle is 50 degrees, volume is 26 cubic meters.

Behind the cab, a special ladder is installed on the platform, with the help of which the driver, without going down to the ground, can see the rest of the cargo in the body, or, if necessary, climb into it.

The cabin for the new dump truck is manufactured under license from the German company Mercedes-Benz from imported components and in its appearance and quality is not much different from the cabover cabs of the Mercedes Axor. The car is equipped with a one-piece windshield and several mirrors with different viewing angles. The bumper is made of high quality plastic, the truck has a new lighting system.

Three footrests with an anti-slip coating lead into the interior of the car; inside there are two or three air-cushioned seats with many adjustments and a comfortable, wide berth. For the first time, the KamAZ cab is quiet and comfortable, as the manufacturer has made high-quality noise, thermal and vibration insulation. The instrument panel is three-sectional, facing the driver; it is informative and well-placed with indicators and control buttons. Optionally, the car can be equipped with air conditioning and electric windows; instead of the third seat, a folding table is often installed.

The supply of used KamAZ-6580 vehicles is extremely limited, since the truck was only recently launched into production. Cars without mileage, manufactured in 2022, are offered at prices starting from 6.2 million rubles. For exactly the same dump truck in 2022 they are asking 6,700,000 rubles. The most expensive is a log truck with a manipulator - the price of such machines starts at 10 million rubles.

Price

No one doubts that one of the main advantages of the Kamaz Hercules should be the affordable cost of the car. This is exactly what will allow the Russian truck to compete with very serious competitors, who have long won an excellent reputation and have established the work of service centers that are so important for vehicles of this type.

KAMAZ will also have to go through this entire path, although even before entering the world market, new vehicles will have to show their best qualities at domestic construction sites and in quarries. By the way, other new KAMAZ trucks, which will be called Jupiter, should also be there. It has already been stated that these will be exclusively mining dump trucks, which will be tasked with squeezing out Belarusian BELAZ trucks in the market.

Inner space

A ladder of plastic steps leads to the cabin. I draw your attention to the nostalgic door handle button. I open the cabin door. Once at the workplace, I analyze the interior space of the cabin. The cabin is a day one, without a berth, with a solid engine casing in the middle. The ceiling has grown a little due to the new roof panel (however, the plant’s production range today still includes a version with a low roof; such a cabin is mainly equipped with a chassis).

The weak and uncomfortable clutch pedal turned out to be easy to press

The front panel is soft and well-cut, but individual elements of the cabin equipment show the age of the structure, as does the bare metal present in places, the sharp corners of which are carefully trimmed with polymer profiles and rubber seals. I don't like the vertical clutch pedal with a threaded travel limiter at all. I’m also not thrilled with crude heating and ventilation controls. From a black-painted tin panel located in the center under the dashboard below with a handbrake valve, locking switches and an umbilical cord for the steering column pneumatic lock.

But a suspended accelerator pedal has appeared and the “guitar” of steering column switches has been forgotten in favor of the usual compact multifunctional “mustache”; on the left side there is now a control lever for an extensive menu of on-board computer data, which are displayed on a monochrome display of a very modest size. In the very left corner of the panel, an electromagnetic ground switch has survived to this day: the quality of KAMAZ electrical wiring is such that many drivers still rightly prefer to turn off the power to the car in the parking lot, so that when they return to it, they see the same fiery orange dump truck, and not a charred skeleton ...

Driving force

The main intrigue of the usual appearance of the orange dump truck is its KAMAZ engine 740.735-400 (Euro 5). It traces its history back to the 740 model, but has been so seriously modernized and refined that, in a significant proportion of spare parts, it is not interchangeable with both the founder of the family and much later versions of the Chelny V-type. According to KAMAZ PJSC, interchangeability is about 30%.

In order to comprehensively approach the description of the new engine, let’s first delve a little into history.

At the turn of the century, the car plant carried out global work to modernize the family of its V-shaped eight-cylinder engines. Then various power settings and certification of compliance with international exhaust toxicity requirements appeared. We went from the second environmental class in 2004 to the fifth in 2019. In the engines themselves, the cleanliness of some surfaces has changed, the gas distribution has been improved and a new cylinder-piston group has been used. The updated V-shaped eight-cylinder turbodiesel 740.30-260 with a working volume of 10.86 liters with an intermediate charge air cooling system (intercooler) developed a power of 260 hp. at 2200 rpm and produced a maximum torque of 1078 Nm in the range of 1200–1400 rpm. Later, a 360-horsepower version appeared with a piston stroke increased to 130 mm and a displacement of 11.76 liters with a compression ratio increased to 18.0. Further modernization led to the creation of a 400-horsepower engine, installed at the subject of today's proceedings.

The engine of the model 740.735-400 has a modified power circuit of the cylinder block in order to give greater rigidity, the crank radius has been increased by 5 mm and new reinforced bolts for securing the main bearing caps (larger diameter) have been used. Lubrication and cooling systems have been modernized. To meet the requirements of the fifth environmental class, the engine is equipped with an electronically controlled Common Rail power system. There is also a “tank with a blue cap” – SCR catalytic reduction technology.

Technical contents and characteristics

Despite the noticeable similarity in appearance of the 2021 model year KAMAZ Hercules dump truck with its German or Swedish counterparts, the vehicle will be quite unique, because it will receive a diesel-electric power transmission.

At the front, under the huge hood, there will be a KAMAZ diesel engine with an estimated power of 450-540 hp. With. One or more electric power units producing 517 hp will be responsible for driving the rear wheels. pp., and will complement the hybrid system with a generator and a set of lithium-titanate batteries.

The maximum speed of such a truck will be 35 km/h, which is enough to move around quarries and large-scale construction sites. The lightweight version of Hercules, which has two wheel axles, will be a little faster. A sample of such a dump truck is not yet ready, but the creators of the manna claim that the 4x4 version will be able to carry up to 25 tons of cargo. By the way, it is far from a fact that these powerful dump trucks will remain Hercules, because the manufacturer has already launched an all-Russian survey to choose a more suitable name for its giants!

Results

Such giant special equipment helps in the development of various industries, and especially mining and construction. There are five best dump truck models , which differ in their technical characteristics and ergonomics:

  • Komatsu 930 E-3 SE - this dump truck takes first place and its power is more than 3000 hp.
  • Second place in the ranking belongs to the dump truck produced by the Belarusian plant BelAZ-75710. Its power is 2544 hp. Another Belarusian-made dump truck is MAZ 20 tons.
  • The Caterpillar 797B has many advantages, thanks to which this dump truck received third place in the ranking.
  • Fourth place rightfully belongs to the powerful and ergonomic Liebherr-T282B, with a power of 2600 hp.
  • The Chinese development of XCMG DE400 is a dump truck that has a huge number of advantages and a minimal set of disadvantages. Another Chinese dump truck is the Shakman.
