We present to your attention a new development of KAMAZ - the KAMAZ-65805 mining dump truck, which received its own name "Atlant". This is the first of a future line of mining dump trucks from the Kama auto giant. It should be noted that KAMAZ is entering this segment of the truck market for the first time.

Externally, Atlant continues the design line started by KAMAZ in new dump trucks, but differs significantly from its counterparts in length (12 m) and load capacity (60 tons). It is no coincidence that it received the name in honor of the ancient Greek giant - at the moment KAMAZ-65805 is, of course, the largest dump truck created in Naberezhnye Chelny. At the same time, according to the designers, it is the smallest of the future family of mining trucks.

The vehicle was created specifically for transporting rock and ore. At the same time, the dimensions of the vehicle are within the limits allowed for movement on public roads, which significantly simplifies transportation. Typically, mining dump trucks are significantly larger in size than the standards and can only be driven in quarries. Atlant can come to the place of work under his own power and leave it if necessary.

The curb weight of the vehicle is 27 tons, the load capacity is 60 tons. The load on the axles is distributed as follows: 12 tons each on the two front ones and 21 tons each on the three rear ones. The total weight of the KAMAZ-65805 dump truck is 87 tons.

The rear suspension of the dump truck is hydraulic, which made it possible to implement such functions as preventing rollovers, controlling its rigidity and unloading leveling.
KAMAZ Atlant, a future competitor to BELAZ dump trucks, made its debut at an exhibition in Moscow
The five-axle giant KAMAZ-65805 Atlant with a lifting capacity of 60 tons became a sensation at the Moscow MiningWorld Russia-2020 exhibition. But it turns out that this is only the first “real” mining dump truck from Naberezhnye Chelny!
Yes, the Kama Automobile Plant is moving into a new market segment and is going to seriously compete with “classic” 4x2 mining dump trucks, including BELAZ equipment. Moreover, the creators of the first “real” KAMAZ mining dump truck are confident that, due to its technical characteristics, it will provide the best performance in the industry. What is the strength of the Kama “Atlant”?
Let us remind you that the first information about the new 60-ton KAMAZ truck appeared at the beginning of summer. True, then the dump truck was called “Samson”. But in the end, they decided to introduce the new product to the market under the name of another mythological hero.
So, Atlant
KAMAZ-65805-002-91 “Atlant”. Designed for transporting rock and rock in medium and small quarries in areas with temperate and cold climates. Has a wheel formula of 10x6. Three axles - the third, fourth and fifth - are made leading (and this is a full-fledged tridem, that is, the distribution of torque between the axles occurs in equal proportions). Three axes - the first, second and fifth - are equipped with rotating mechanisms. The dump truck is of road size – its width is 2530 mm. This is important, they believe in Naberezhnye Chelny, since without a load the dump truck will be able to move on public roads without any problems (no special permits are needed) (for example, when moving from one quarry to another).
The length of Atlant reaches 11,040 mm - this is a lot. Nevertheless, thanks to the fifth rotary axle (note that it is turned entirely using hydraulic cylinders), the new dump truck, the developers claim, has almost the same maneuverability as vehicles with an 8x4 wheel arrangement. Height "Atlanta" - 3950 mm.
The curb weight of the dump truck is 27,000 kg. Total weight – 87,000 kg. The permissible load on the steering axles is 12,000 kg, on the drive axles - up to 21,000 kg. The suspension of the front steered axles is spring. The suspension of the tridem is made hydraulic. This makes it possible to implement functions such as rollover prevention during roll, suspension stiffness control and leveling during unloading. (However, a modification is planned for the Atlant line with a fully spring rear suspension; it will be installed at the request of the customer.)
As the designers emphasize, the Atlant's drive wheels account for more than 72% of the vehicle's adhesion weight, which is higher than that of 8x4 road dump trucks, and practically reaches the performance of 6x4 dump trucks. This ensures high vehicle cross-country ability, including on wet roads inside the quarry.
Another advantage of a dump truck with a 10x6 wheel arrangement is the reduction in specific ground pressure due to the larger contact patch of all wheels. The KAMAZ team's calculations are as follows.
So, if “quarry trucks” with a 4x2 wheel arrangement have a weight of 90-95 tons per six wheels with a width of 600 mm (26.39 tons per 1 linear meter), then “Atlanta” (with a 3-9% less total weight) on five axles, the pressure is distributed through 16 wheels with a width of 325 mm at a lower linear pressure (16.73 t/m). Taking into account the wheel diameter (2.2 m versus 1 m for KAMAZ), the specific pressure in the contact patch for Atlant is 10-30% lower, which significantly reduces the load on road surfaces (asphalt, concrete, gravel, crushed stone) of technological roads .
What does Atlant have under the cockpit?
The dump truck is equipped with a new in-line 12-liter diesel engine KAMAZ-910.11-500 with a power of 500 hp. (torque – 2300 Nm). The automatic transmission is a 7-speed Allison 4700, which is the most suitable solution for mining equipment in this load capacity class, as it allows you to change gears without interrupting the power flow.
The dump platform in this (rock) design has a volume of 26 cubic meters. Its bottom and sides are made of special steel of increased thickness. The platform is heated with exhaust gases, and the gases are taken in after they have passed through the entire exhaust system and muffler.
The solution with such a cutout on the visor is quite controversial, but it allows you to raise the cabin for access to the engine compartment when the platform is lowered.
The Atlanta is equipped with a “construction” cabin of the K5 family. It is low, without a sleeping place and narrow, only 2300 mm wide. The difference from KAMAZ K5 road dump trucks (6595, 65951, 65952) is the presence of an automatic transmission control selector and a joystick for controlling the hydraulic suspension.
Atlantas will be equipped with a new on-board information system and driver assistance system level “1+” (includes a collision avoidance system and a driver condition monitoring system). KAMAZ mining dump trucks are equipped with monitoring systems for tire pressure, vehicle roll, overload and the presence of power lines during unloading. Atlant will receive a “virtual corridor” system (it will control the movement of the dump truck along the roads inside the quarry), a rear-view camera and a 360-degree video viewing system.
In addition, Atlant is planned to be equipped with special visual devices to help the excavator operator when loading the vehicle - these are lighting devices that will report the level of loading and possible overload.
One and a half times more effective
Naberezhnye Chelny believes that Atlant family cars should be very efficient in terms of operating costs for consumers. The arguments are as follows: since the vehicle uses serial and mass-produced solutions (engine, cabin, gearbox, axles), the cost of spare parts and the cost of maintenance for these components will be significantly lower than the cost of spare parts for special mining dump trucks. In addition, Atlant has a higher speed on the route (“maximum speed” is 90 km/h), which will increase the number of flights per work shift and, accordingly, transport a larger volume of cargo. In general, according to specialists from KAMAZ PJSC, Atlant will be more than one and a half times more efficient compared to vehicles with the same load-carrying capacity from other manufacturers.
How much will Atlant cost? Such a 60-ton dump truck, as demonstrated at the exhibition, costs about 15 million rubles (almost $200,000).
When to expect?
Immediately after the exhibition, KAMAZ-65805-002-91 Atlant is sent for testing, which will take place in Kuzbass, in quarries. In 2021, KAMAZ PJSC expects to conduct the entire range of tests and make the necessary improvements. The production of a pilot batch is already planned for 2022. Serial production will begin in 2023.
At the same time, over the next two years, KAMAZ is going to introduce a whole family of Atlant mining dump trucks, which will include models of 6x4, 8x4, 8x6, 10x6 wheel configurations with a carrying capacity of 45 to 75 tons. Dump trucks will also be produced in two versions: overall and oversized.
What does BELAZ produce in this range?
KAMAZ with its Atlant vehicles in the future can compete with the Belarusian Automobile Plant in two classes of load capacity: 45 tons and 55-60 tons.
BELAZ-7547 is a representative of 45-ton trucks. The model has been in mass production since May 2003 and has proven itself to be reliable and balanced in quality and price. The line includes three modifications with engines YaMZ-240NM2 (500 hp), Cummins KTA19-C (600 hp) and gas piston Kungur-550 (550 hp). The transmission is hydromechanical. Operating weight – 33,100 kg. Maximum speed – 50 km/h.
BELAZ-75450 is a more modern model with the same load capacity, 45 tons. Three modifications are available with engines Cummins QSX 15-C (600 hp), Cummins KTA19-C (600 hp) and Scania DC 16 (650 hp). The transmission is hydromechanical. Operating weight – 35.100 kg. Maximum speed – 55 km/h.
Two 60-ton trucks are produced in Zhodino: BELAZ-7555E with a 750-horsepower Cummins QSK 19-C engine and BELAZ-7555I with a 757-horsepower Liebherr D 9512 A7. The operating weight of both dump trucks is 44,100 kg. Maximum speed – 55 km/h.
In addition, the 7555 series produces five more modifications with different engines, but with a lower load capacity - 55 tons.
MAZ is also looking towards quarries
It is worth adding that at the Minsk Automobile Plant, increasing the load capacity of dump trucks is considered a promising direction. A “heavy” series has appeared in the line with new reinforced frames made of high-strength steel and strengthened spring suspensions, new axles and axles of our own design.
The flagship of the new “heavy” series is the MAZ-65262L 8x8 all-wheel drive dump truck with a 460-horsepower MAZ-Weichai WP12.460E50 engine and a 25-cc platform. With a total weight of 50,000 kg, its load capacity is 31,200 kg. However, provided that the maximum speed is limited to no more than 50 km/h, it is possible to increase the load capacity to 35,200 kg with a corresponding increase in the technically permissible maximum weight to 54,000 kg.
As we were told at the Minsk Automobile Plant, in the near future there are plans to create a modification based on the MAZ-65262L for transporting rock, as well as a coal dump truck. And this is a real career job.
Tipper platform
0
The truck is designed for transporting rock and ore, and is equipped with a special dump platform, which has an increased thickness of the bottom, walls and sides. There is a powerful protective canopy that completely covers the cabin, protecting the driver from falling rock debris. And a special system for heating the platform with exhaust gases from the engine solved the problem of cargo freezing to the body in winter. The platform's elevation angle is 50 degrees, volume is 26 cubic meters.

Behind the cab, a special ladder is installed on the platform, with the help of which the driver, without going down to the ground, can see the rest of the cargo in the body, or, if necessary, climb into it.
