General information

MAZ 5551 is considered one of the oldest models currently produced by the Minsk Automobile Plant. The enterprise itself appeared in the capital of Belarus in 1944. Four years later, the plant produced its first cars. The debut of the MAZ 5551 took place much later - in 1985. The MAZ 5337 model was chosen as the basis for the equipment. After significant improvements, the new product was put into production.

The car has received noticeable changes compared to its predecessor. The shape of the gear shift lever, which was made in the form of a crowbar on earlier versions, has been revised. The driver no longer had to catch transmissions in the interior space. At the same time, the previous speed switching scheme has been preserved.

Other improvements include:

  • absence of problems with “unfastening” the cabin, present in predecessors;
  • replacing the drum handbrake with an element with spring energy accumulators. The brake system also includes bolts for forced brake release, providing braking in the absence of air in the system;
  • new shape of headlights, individual cab components and radiator grille. The split windshield was replaced with a panoramic one with a large view. A spoiler was also installed on the roof of the car.

The first modifications of the MAZ 5551 had a completely unremarkable appearance. A cabover cab with a powerful front bumper with large round headlights and a small radiator grille, visually divided into three sections, was chosen for the car. The classic variation received a lifting metal body with one folding side and a rear unloading scheme.

In 1998, MAZ 5551 underwent restyling. The updated version received a new cabin design, minor design changes and a revised instrument panel. The inside of the car has become more spacious. The vehicle was equipped with a large 2-seater cabin with the ability to recline to check the technical condition.

The restyled version turned out to be more interesting. The radiator grille increased in size (the previous divisions were removed), and the bumper became more streamlined (in addition to headlights, turn signals were installed on it). Plastic elements appeared on the sides next to the doors. The structurally updated MAZ 5551 has changed slightly - some shortcomings have been corrected, new engines have appeared. This modification is currently offered on the market.

The MAZ 5551 family is quite extensive. The basic version is a dump truck with a folding body. However, the Minsk Automobile Plant also produces a chassis used for installing various special-purpose equipment, which increases the scope of application of the vehicle. Articulation into a road train is also available. For the northern regions, the “HL” modification is produced, the operation of which is possible at temperatures down to -60 degrees Celsius.

MAZ 5551 differs from most competitors in its compact dimensions, therefore it can be used in urban environments. Traditionally, the car is in demand at construction sites within the city. The main purpose of the machine is to transport bulk materials over short distances. High technical characteristics make this model one of the most popular in the middle class dump truck category.

Electrical systems of a MAZ car

The electrical system includes the following mechanisms:

  1. Power supply and engine starting system. It consists of an intermediate relay, a battery mass switch, a device key switch and a starter.
  2. Accumulator battery. Its rated voltage is 12 V. There are 2 batteries installed here, which are connected in series with each other.
  3. Generator set. This is an alternating current generator equipped with a rectifier unit.
  4. Starter with Euro-3 electrical circuit. It consists of a contact bolt, a glass, an armature rod, a relay, a winding, threaded plugs, and an electrical grid.
  5. Battery disconnect switch. It is necessary to disconnect and connect the battery to the vehicle ground.
  6. Electric torch device. Its function is to facilitate engine starting in low temperature conditions.
  7. Preheater.
  8. Lighting and light signaling system. This electrical circuit includes headlights, spotlights, fog lights, rear lights, and lighting inside the driver's cabin.
  9. Instrumentation. This includes a speedometer, a two-needle pressure level indicator, a block of control and warning lamps.
  10. Sound alarm. It is designed to alert you when the air pressure level in the brake mechanism drops to a critical level.

Maz 5516

Another dump truck produced at the Belarusian plant has a 6x4 wheel arrangement and has been produced since 1994. We are talking about the famous Maz 5516 truck.

This Maz model was initially produced for several purposes, which is explained by 2 types of booths - long and short. Let's take a closer look at the area where this truck is used.

Modification 5516 is intended for the transportation of bulk cargo, in particular grain. Here are its features:

  • Differs from the standard version in the ability to perform 2-sided lateral unloading;
  • The volume of the platform of this modification is increased to 22 cubic meters. meters, therefore, the carrying capacity is increased. The latter is 20 tons.

The 5549 was made on the 5335 platform. On this MAZ 5549, a distinctive feature is the optics moved to the front bumper. This meets exactly the latest requirements regarding the installation of light optics on dump trucks.

A special cap and decorative radiator grille were installed in the front area of ​​the cabin. “Dimensions” were also installed here, clearly combined with the turn indicators.

The carrying capacity of this MAZ is relatively small - 8 tons. But it consumes much less - 22 l/100 km.

Maintenance, faults and repairs

Basic malfunctions and repairs of electrical equipment:

  1. The indicator lamps are out of order. In this case, it is recommended to check the reliability of the contact in the detachable connections, inspect the safety device for damage and defects, check the integrity of the backlight rheostat and the serviceability of the relay.
  2. The lights do not come on when reverse gear is engaged. In this case, you should eliminate the short circuit in the flashlight wiring, check the reliability of the contacts, connect the harness to the reverse sensor, inspect the lamp for defects, and align the wires in the block.
  3. The rear brake lights do not light up. The problem may be due to an open circuit, a short circuit, a malfunction of the brake signals, or a broken incandescent lamp filament.
  4. The head lights do not light up. It is necessary to inspect the electrical wiring for a short circuit, conduct an external inspection of the switch (if damage is found, replace it), and check the serviceability of the relay.
  5. Heated mirrors do not work. You should inspect the contacts in the detachable connections, check the fuse for wear, and replace damaged parts in the system.
  6. The headlights are constantly on. In this case, you need to check the serviceability of the switch, the reliability of the contacts in the blocks, and inspect the relay for defects.
  7. The direction indicators do not light up. It is necessary to replace the lamps, inspect the breaker, and replace the BKA.
  8. The tachometer is out of order. The malfunction may be caused by malfunctions of the sensor, safety device, or unreliable contacts in the blocks.

MAZ generator repair

To perform the work, the installation is usually removed from the power unit.

Next, disconnect the battery ground. Then disconnect the wires from the terminals. Do not forget to loosen the tension bolt of the MAZ generator belts, as well as the fastening nuts.

Hold the installation carefully to avoid damaging the brackets. Release the bolt and carefully remove the pin. Then remove the MAZ generator belt from the pulley and the installation itself. The assembly is performed in the opposite state.

The removed mechanism must be cleaned and disassembled according to the diagram:

  1. Unscrew the screw connection of the wires, as well as the brush holder, and dismantle the part;
  2. Unscrew the IRN and remove the regulator;
  3. Unscrew the cover fastenings and the coupler of the MAZ generator;
  4. Unscrew the nuts;
  5. Remove the cover with the stator;
  6. Unscrew the terminal nuts, as well as the rectifier screws;
  7. Remove the pulley by unscrewing the connection;
  8. Knock out the key;
  9. Remove the fan and bushing;
  10. Release the cover from the shaft and remove the bearings.
