The tested model was first presented almost two years ago at the Comtrans`2013 exhibition. Judging by the berth in the cabin, the new product is addressed to universal cargo carriers operating over long distances, by dump truck standards – 35–50 km. What kind of hard workers are these? Removal of waste from construction sites, snow from city centers, construction bushes remote from housing.
The permissible gross weight of the truck is 33.5 tons, and the load capacity is 20 tons. In order to obtain such impressive declared characteristics, the frame was strengthened. Compared to previous models, the height of the 8 mm thick side members has been increased from 280 to 310 mm, and the frame has four additional cross members.
The dump truck is equipped with a 412-horsepower YaMZ-651 engine and a 16-speed ZF manual gearbox. This combination is rarely found on domestic dump trucks (for a person born in the USSR, MAZ is an exclusively domestic vehicle). The engines of the YaMZ-651 family are in-line 6-cylinder engines of a traditional design for this class of vehicles. As we have already written, they are produced under a technological license from Renault Trucks; for this purpose, an assembly line was purchased, which is located in Tutaev. Achievement of environmental standards of the fourth class (Euro 4) is ensured by the use of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, i.e. without the use of AdBlue technology. By the way, Yaroslavl diesel engines of the “651” family are also successfully used on TONAR trucks. The ZF16S2520TO gearbox is a proven and long-familiar unit that appears from time to time in a variety of trucks: from KamAZ to Ford Cargo.

MAZ-6501 engines
Initially, MAZ twenty-ton trucks were equipped with eight-cylinder V-shaped diesel engines of the classic YaMZ-238 family. In particular, the YaMZ-238 D2 (a turbocharged engine with a power of 330 hp (243 kW). Subsequently, they were replaced by more modern Yaroslavl engines: YaMZ-6562.10 (a six-cylinder V-twin engine, turbocharged, with a power of 250 hp. (184 kW); YaMZ-6581.10 (eight-cylinder V-shaped diesel engine, turbocharged, 400 hp (294 kW), YaMZ-650.10 (six-cylinder L-shaped diesel engine, turbocharged, 412 hp ( 303 kW), YaMZ-7511.10 (eight-cylinder turbocharged V-shaped diesel engine, turbocharged, with a power of 400 hp (294 kW). A small part of serial dump trucks was produced and continues to be produced with imported diesel engines Cummins ISLe and Mercedes-Benz OM501LA . Also, under the hoods of the MAZ-6501, diesel engines from Tutaevsky and Minsk Motor Engines and MAN (Germany) were “tried.”
As a result, the main engines for the MAZ-6501 family remained Yaroslavl engines (improving and keeping up with the times). However, the times when “monopolism” in engines, with simultaneous unification and maintainability, are gone. Now, a single third-party powertrain supplier is considered synonymous with dependency. In modern economic realities, everyone is moving away from this, including MAZ. A course was set to search for an alternative supplier of diesel engines, and in the future, to produce our own engines. The solution, again according to the tradition of our era, was found in China.
In September 2022, in the Great Stone industrial park, MAZ, together with a Chinese company, began construction on the production of diesel engines. In preliminary plans, it was announced that the line of “Belarusian” Weichai engines will consist of four families: WP5 (160–220 hp) of the Euro-5 environmental class, WP7 (210–300 hp), WP12 ( 270–340 hp) and WP13 (353–405 hp) - they will already correspond to the Euro-6 environmental class. Initially, this will be a purely assembly production from components produced in China. In the long term, some parts will be produced in Belarus. The main focus is on the most powerful WP12/WP13 motors, as the most promising. Such power units are already installed on serial MAZ-6501 and MAZ serial truck tractors.
