The power take-off shaft is part of the transmission, providing drive for the machines used in the unit with the tractor. MTZ 1221 has a similar PTO design to the Belarus MTZ 82 tractor, where its independent drive is organized from the clutch and passes through three parts of the transmission (space, gearbox and rear axle), and the synchronous drive is from the gearbox intermediate shaft gear on the side connecting to the rear axle. The activation gearbox is located in the lower part of the rear axle housing and extends with a drive spline shank outside the rear wall of the axle.
The material outlines the features and types of designs of the power take-off shaft mechanisms of the Belarus 1221 tractor and its modifications.
History of the creation of the MTZ-1523 tractor
The MTZ-1523 tractor was developed and produced by the open joint-stock company Minsk Tractor Plant. This company owns the well-known Belarus brand.
a number of changes were made :
- a cabin of increased comfort with a durable frame;

Design features of the PTO Belarus 1221
Considering that this tractor is more advanced in terms of control ergonomics, the MTZ 1221 has a number of differences in comparison with the design of the power take-off shaft mechanisms of the MTZ 82, and there are also design differences directly in a number of manufactured modifications of this machine.
The main difference from the MTZ 82 is the improved control system, where the PTO is engaged not mechanically - by a system of rods and levers, but by a built-in hydraulic cylinder, which also interacts with the brake bands of the planetary PTO gearbox through a system of levers. The pressure on the cylinder is supplied from the transmission hydraulic system through a rod-controlled spool of a separate distributor. Also, upon request, control can be organized as part of the electronic tractor control system by a separate key button on the side control panel, where the pressure on the hydraulic cylinder in the rear PTO control drive is supplied by a built-in distributor with a solenoid valve.
belt PTO diagram
Regarding the differences between the device among the tractor modifications, it should be noted that the machines 1221.2, 1221.3, 1221.4 are equipped with a planetary gearbox of the rear power take-off shaft with band brakes, and the latest modifications 1221.5, 1221.6 are equipped with a gearbox with hydraulically pressed disc clutches.
The most modern modification 1221.6 with an integrated electronic control system CESU is equipped with diagnostic indicators of PTO operation, an emergency PTO stop button and automatic shutdown of its drive when the diesel engine is stopped.
Tractor MTZ 1221.6 with front PTO
At the same time, all versions of the tractor can be optionally equipped with a front PTO, also controlled by a distributor with an electromagnetic valve through a button on the side control panel in the cab.
Independent drive device
In this mode, rotation is transmitted by a constant flow while the tractor engine is running. Power is taken directly from the clutch pressure plate hub and the PTO drive shaft entering its splines.
The tubular shaft of the PTO drive mounted on the power shaft is made integral with two cylindrical drive gears of the two-speed independent mode gearbox. Both drive gears are in constant mesh with driven spur gears located on a separate shaft. Switching the drive rotation speed (540 or 1000 rpm) is carried out by a gear coupling, organized between two driven gears by its axial movement through a fork and a driver brought out of the intermediate housing. The drive is then transmitted by a shaft passing through the tubular intermediate shaft of the gearbox. The splined shaft output interacts with the cam clutch for switching drive modes and, when the gear is engaged, is transmitted along a shaft located on a bearing support in the partition of the rear axle housing, providing drive to the controlled planetary gearbox of the rear PTO.
Transmission diagram MTZ 1221
Synchronous drive device
This drive mode transmits rotation only when the tractor is moving at a rotation speed of the connecting spline tail of the rear PTO of 4.87 revolutions per 1 meter of machine travel (with 18.4R38 rear tires installed). Direct drive of the synchronous mode is carried out from the gear on the intermediate shaft of the gearbox, interacting with the planetary gearbox of the PTO engagement with the corresponding switching of the cam clutch. The use of this drive mode is recommended when the tractor speed is no more than 8 km/h.
PTO belt reducer
The design of the planetary gearbox with band brakes of the rear PTO of the MTZ 1221 tractor does not differ from that installed on the Belarus 82(80) tractor; the operating principle and assembly procedure are absolutely the same.
PTO gearbox with band brakes
Small differences lie in the design of the gearbox shaft fit and some small assembly units, given that the power transmitted to the drive by the D-260 diesel engine is much higher compared to the four-cylinder D-240 (243) of the MTZ 82 tractor. (Unit catalog number for Belarus 1221 factory catalog -1221-4202010-A, for MTZ 80.82 - 85-4202010).
composition of the PTO planetary gearbox with band brakes
belt PTO parts list
The function of the gearbox is to stop and start the rotation of the drive rear shank when the drive mode is engaged. Control is carried out by the operation of the planetary mechanism of the unit by switching two brake bands, one of which is installed on the drive drum, the other on the sun gear drum of the planetary gear.
To enable rotation, the brake band on the sun gear drum is braked and released on the carrier. Thus, the ring gear, with the teeth of its internal ring, rotating the satellites on the axles of the carrier, causes them to roll against the crown of the inhibited sun gear, ensuring the transmission of rotation to the carrier itself and the gearbox shaft rigidly installed in the splines of its hub.
In the opposite situation, when the sun gear is released, and the carrier along with the drive shaft is braked, the rotation from the ring gear through the satellites is transmitted to the sun gear, providing it with idle rotation along with the unbraked drum of the same name.

Disc PTO
The improved versions of MTZ 1221.5, 1221.6 are equipped with a planetary gearbox with hydraulically pressed friction disc clutches (catalog number of gearbox 1025-4202020).
PTO planetary gearbox with disc clutches
The design of the gearbox is made in this way: the carrier clutch is connected by its drive disks to the gearbox housing, and the driven disks are connected to the clutch ring gear, made integral with the sun gear. The second coupling has driving discs with a gear ring of the coupling on the gearbox shaft, and driven discs with a gearbox cover.
The operating principle of the gearbox remains the same. When the sun gear is braked, the satellites, rotating under the action of the drive crown ring, roll along the static braked sun gear ring, dragging along the carrier along with the gearbox shaft, ensuring rotation of the splined connecting outer shank. The braking of the sun gear is due to the connection of the clutch discs with the static gearbox housing.

Disc PTO parts list
When pressure is applied to the shaft coupling, the carrier mounted on its splines also stops and the shaft drive stops. Rotation from the ring gear rotates the satellites together with the disinhibited sun gear to idle. Stopping is ensured by the connection between the shaft coupling and the gearbox cover.
