MTZ-40: the history of the rarest tractor model - Belarus

Built immediately after the end of the war, the Minsk Tractor Plant is today a powerful machine-building holding, producing more than a hundred models of tractors, which includes nine modern production facilities. The company's products account for a tenth of all wheeled tractors produced in the world. Among the models that rolled off the plant’s assembly line were legendary tractors that had been produced for decades and machines that had only been in production for a few years. One of these quickly discontinued machines is the MTZ-40 tractor.

History of creation and production

MTZ-40 is a wheeled vehicle of 0.9 traction class produced by the Minsk Tractor Plant, the main use of which was agricultural work that did not require much power - cultivation of light soils, maintenance of greenhouses and horticultural farms. The model, produced for a short time, was also used in cargo transportation and municipal services.

The development of the machine was started on the recommendation of the Main Automotive and Tractor Institute of the USSR and was carried out under the constant control of the then party and state leadership of the country.

The serial production of the machine, which began in the middle of the last century, coincided with the intensive increase in the Minsk enterprise's production of other models MTZ-2 and MTZ-5 and 5L and their modernization.

Equipped with an engine designed to consume diesel fuel, the light-weight tractor was not produced for long - the enterprise was developing rapidly and machine models quickly replaced each other. Having lived a short life, the MTZ-40 became the basis for the design and development of other models of Minsk tractor manufacturers.

Let's talk about homemade products for this tractor. I'll post my photos in a week. I don't have a camera yet.

Spit it out! Very interesting to see. I’m currently working on attachments for the T-40.

I’ll definitely post it. Now I’m interested in something homemade for weeding potatoes. Or is everyone just hilling up several times? I found a couple of devices for hilling and settled on a Polish planter without tanks. not difficult to do yourself. Files: _015_4.jpg

I’ll definitely post it. Now I’m interested in something homemade for weeding potatoes. Or is everyone just hilling up several times? I found a couple of devices for hilling and settled on a Polish planter without tanks. not difficult to do yourself.

Why a planter? There is also a hiller of this kind.

Do you also install wheels with lugs on the hiller? What if you need to deepen a section somewhere or vice versa? If you loosen the bolt on the hiller and raise or lower it, it will be long and laborious. If you take a beam from a professional pipe 60*60, 80*80, 100*100 and hang individual sections, it will be easier to operate.

I'll put on the wheels I can find and see the rest

I don’t know about the absorption of grain, but the absorption of flour processed in the crushing chamber is possible. Of course, the PTO revolutions are not enough. PTO 540 a needs from 1500 to 3000 rpm for crushing and, in turn, to create an air flow for transportation through pipes. DKU principle. In order not to carry grain upstairs, you need to place a bunker with an auger at the bottom.

Hello. Igor, can you tell me what the maximum weight of the attachment is? I found five hillers and a beam in the ferrous metal. I want to make a hiller of the KON-2.4 type, but something is scary: can such a cultivator handle a forty?

I have a Lidselmash 4-row planter - its weight is 700 kg; on the road, when you drive, you can’t move quickly, otherwise it will throw up the FDA and take off from the ground. Tractor with FDA but without counterweights. In the garden, when I load up the potatoes when planting, and then I turn around with her, I start a little and rear up, in short, funny. I haven’t seen KON-2.4, or maybe I have, but I don’t know what it is. In short, I myself have 5 sections of hillers, width 2.8, the weight of the cultivator is about 350 kg, it pulls like a beast, much lighter than a plow.

How wide do you plant potatoes on a board of perches? 50 cm)))

To find out what kind of plow you have, you need to measure the width of the plowshare, that is, the knife that cuts the ground)) if it is 35 cm, then the plow is PLN-3-35, or when plowing, measure the width of the plowed land, divide by two)) These plowshares need to be heated and tightened in the forge so that they they were sharp, if they were blunt, then there was a lot of resistance on the tractor))) Three hulls on heavy ground MTZ, YuMZ are also straining if you plow not 15 cm but as it should be 25 cm)))) And on the T-40AM you can carry three as soon as possible it will be 15 cm for the grandmothers, quickly traveled in the back to the front and then the flat potato will give birth ha-ha-ha))) For plowing standards, as it should be, two buildings because the traction class is not the same as UMZ, MTZ T-40, 1.4 and 0.9 book and much more))

Power point

The vehicle was equipped with a forty-five-horsepower four-stroke four-cylinder engine of the D-40 series, designed to consume diesel fuel.

The engine was developed taking into account the design features of the MTZ-40, equipped with a separate-unit hydraulic system. This feature of the tractor also influenced the location of the engine.

The engine developers made several changes to the design of the power plant, which made it possible to significantly reduce fuel consumption during operation of the machine. The size of the flow sections of the engine head, suction channels and the diameter of the valve plates were increased, the fuel purification filters and the air purification system were modernized.

In addition, heavy elements were replaced with lighter parts.

Design

The tractor's fully reversible mechanical transmission unit made it possible to effectively control the machine in all speed ranges, both when moving the machine forward and when moving backward.

Some modifications of the 40 Belarus were equipped with a creeper, which allowed the tractor to operate at low speeds.

The design features of the machine made it possible to aggregate it with most trailed-mounted mechanisms designed to work with other models produced by the Minsk Tractor Plant. Moreover, the tractor could work with equipment designed for machines more powerful than the MTZ-40.

The tractor uses a traditional layout for machines produced by the Minsk Tractor Plant - a cabin installed behind the engine, which does not interfere with access to the power plant for its repair and maintenance, and large rear wheels. The smaller front wheels guiding the movement of the tractor were installed on a special spring suspension.

The tractor was equipped with tires with a pattern reminiscent of a Christmas tree silhouette, which provided the vehicle with excellent maneuverability when working on soils of varying humidity and flowability.

To start the engine, a special starting carburetor motor was used.

The main disadvantages of the machine were:

  • Problematic startup of the power plant in low temperatures;
  • Inconvenient placement of controls for the movement of the machine and the operation of attachments.

Device

The model's transmission was completely reversible and mechanical. It made it possible to make maximum use of the entire range of speeds of the rear and forward movements of the tractor. Some versions provided for the installation of a hydrostatic or mechanical creeper, which made it possible to operate at low speeds.

One of the features of the MTZ-40 was its unit compatibility with most trailed and mounted machines and units manufactured for other products of the Minsk Tractor Plant. In addition, the model worked with equipment from heavier Belarusians.

The rear wheels of the tractor had a large diameter, the front wheels were somewhat smaller, but were guides and were installed on a spring suspension. The MTZ-40 had high cross-country ability thanks to the classic “herringbone” wheels, which was especially valued in agriculture.

"Belarus-40" was made according to the traditional scheme for the Minsk Tractor Plant with a semi-frame structure. The engine was started from a carburetor starting motor.

The disadvantages of the tractor included the presence of problems with starting the engine in winter. The layout of the levers and control mechanisms located in the operator's cabin was also not the best.

Price

The production of the model, which was produced for only a few years, ended quite a long time ago, so there are not many offers for the MTZ-40 now. The average price for copies of recent years of production is approximately 150,000 rubles. Early used versions can be found much cheaper.

Tractor MTZ-40 - features of the transition model

The line of Minsk tractors includes models that have been successfully produced for several decades and transitional versions that were removed from the assembly line after several years.

One of these machines is the MTZ-40 universal tractor designed for arable, harvesting, transport and other agricultural work. After extensive testing, prototypes of the 0.9 traction class tractor were recommended for mass production.

  • Easy to maintain and compact in size, the machine was equipped with a fairly powerful and economical diesel power unit and a reverse mechanical transmission, allowing the most efficient use of forward and reverse speed modes.
  • The presence of a hydrostatic or mechanical demultiplier-retarder on some series made it possible to use the 40th model for transplanting and harvesting industrial crops.
  • The design of this machine includes the traditional Minsk tractor compatibility with branded mounted and trailed units, including those intended for heavier MTZ-5 machines and their modifications.
  • The tractor's layout uses a semi-frame structure typical for Minsk tractors, rear axle wheels of increased diameter, and a front axle with damper suspension.

MTZ-40 is on the list of the first universal machines for which the designers of the Minsk Tractor Plant developed a sealed cabin that was quite convenient and comfortable for its time.

Minsk models of small-scale mechanization

The MTZ tractor should include in this category:

  • model 100;
  • model 132 (modification 132 N);
  • model 142;
  • model 152.

Despite their small overall dimensions, the models are endowed with the following quality characteristics, namely: maneuverability, low maintenance and ease of operation. All of the above models can also be used with trailers and mounted agricultural equipment. The scope of use of models is diverse; they are in demand in various sectors of agriculture and livestock farming, and in private farming.

Main technical characteristics of MTZ 100

The MTZ 100 model is a universal power unit, which is located between the first and second traction classes. Main technical indicators:

  • power 100 l. With;
  • specific diesel fuel consumption 242 g/kW h;
  • fuel tank volume 156 l;
  • weight 3750 kg.

The model has a rear linkage, which maximizes the functionality of the tractor.

The MTZ model 102 tractor is designed to work with mounted, trailed and semi-mounted equipment. This fact indicates that this is a multifunctional model, which is in great demand in the national economy today.

Main technical parameters:

  • power 105 l. With;
  • front clearance 645 mm;
  • cylinder volume 4.75 l.

When asked how many engine hours to change the oil, you should look for the answer in the manufacturer’s instructions. If the regime is violated, the main elements of the tractor may fail.

Tractor model 142

A distinctive feature of the model is increased cross-country ability. This effect was achieved due to the fact that all wheels on the tractor are driven. Main technical parameters:

  • power 150 l. With;
  • ground clearance 650 mm;
  • weight 4.8 t.

The model can be used for arable work with mounted or reversible plows.

Model 152

Main technical characteristics:

  • power 13 l. With;
  • fuel consumption (gasoline) 326 g/kW h;
  • ground clearance 280 mm;
  • weight 650 kg.

It is very common to see this model in private ownership, which works with a homemade knife.
Today, almost every owner can make a cultivator with their own hands. To do this you need to have the necessary tools, drawings and desire. You can also see homemade products with other models of this model range. Many people are interested in the question, where are the numbers on the MTZ tractor, which are small in size? As a rule, most models have a place for fixing the license plate on the rear of the frame on the left side.

Specifications

With average dimensions of 3.66 x 1.62 x 2.1 m, the MTZ-40 weighed 2.6 tons. Maneuverability was ensured by a small turning radius, cross-country ability was ensured by high ground clearance and a special tire tread pattern. The range of operating and transport speeds is within 2.4-24 km/h. Worm-type steering, without hydraulic booster.

  • The Belarus-40 tractor was equipped with a very advanced for that time economical diesel engine D-40 with a power of 45 hp. with an average fuel consumption of 182 g/hp. at one o'clock. Fuel consumption has also been reduced due to modifications to the gas distribution system, in particular the use of valves of increased diameter, and the design of the air cleaner and fuel filter housing have been changed.
  • Changes were made to the design of the power unit related to the arrangement of the gear pump drive of the on-board separate-unit hydraulic system.

The general concept of the D-40 power unit became the basis for the creation of more powerful and advanced proprietary engines with a power of up to several hundred hp.

The performance of the on-board hydraulics ensured the ability of the tractor to operate with front-end loaders of the Kun type. Buckets of different volumes and forks for loading rolled products, industrial wood, silage or hay were offered as replaceable working tools.

Modifications and technical characteristics of the model range

All models can be used even in forestry, where logging is carried out. The entire range of agricultural special equipment includes:

Advantages and disadvantages

After finalizing individual components, the 40th model tractor would have every chance of becoming the base model for the development of more advanced versions in the category of small and medium-sized machines.

The list of undeniable advantages of this machine:

  • a successful layout in all respects, which has become traditional for new developments of Minsk tractors;
  • access to individual units for maintenance and troubleshooting;
  • fairly flexible traction characteristics of the power unit;
  • the presence of a reverse mode of operation of the transmission;
  • compatibility with a wide range of mounted, soil-cultivating, harvesting and loading and unloading devices;
  • the use of wide-profile wheel tires, the possibility of installing a running range.

Significant disadvantages of the MTZ-40 are, first of all, problems with cold starting at low temperatures.

In second place is the lack of synchronizers for low transmission gears, non-ergonomic placement of the instrument panel, knobs and switches of the main and auxiliary tractor systems.

Features of operation

The winning advantage of the Belarus MTZ-40 is its reasonable aggregation with a wide range of additional accessories and tools developed for other MTZ equipment. The large weight of the agricultural machine (2.6 tons) allows you to process any soil - virgin, wet, loose.

Operation of MTZ-40

After a number of improvements and modernizations, the Belarus MTZ-40 acquired a lot of advantageous features:

  • Practical accessibility to components and mechanisms during maintenance.
  • Optimal compatibility with additional attachments.
  • The rational layout of the MTZ-40 tractor became standard for subsequent developments at the Minsk Plant.
  • High traction characteristics of agricultural machinery.
  • Mounting of wheels with rubber with an aggressive agricultural protector.
  • The presence of a reverse mode of operation of the transmission.
  • Possibility of equipping the unit with a running range amplifier.

The disadvantages include:

  • Serious problems with starting in the cold season.
  • Low level of ergonomics of the cabin and control panel.
  • Lack of synchronization at lower speeds.

Service

In the diesel engine of the Belarus MTZ-40 tractor, parts are lubricated under pressure and splashing. To avoid breakdowns, the manufacturer recommends strictly adhering to the specified brands of oils, since excessive oil viscosity interferes with proper circulation in the system; on the contrary, due to insufficient density, it can leak and accumulate at the junction of individual elements.

In summer, oil with the additive DP-11 is used, in winter - DP-8. Oils of class SAE-50, SAE-30, SAE-40 are allowed to be used only in summer. A complete engine oil change is carried out after 250 operating hours, or annually. It must be taken into account that a diesel engine quickly darkens the oil, so its replacement must be carried out strictly according to the recommendations.

SAE-30 oil

SAE-40 oil

SAE-50 oil

As a gear oil, it is recommended to use 140 SAE oil for hot climates, and 90 SAE oil in temperate zones. However, due to the fact that the oil in the transmission is changed quite rarely - no earlier than after a mileage of 60 thousand km, it is recommended to use multi-grade oil for the transmission.

Price of a new and used MTZ-40 tractor

A machine with zero operating hours can only be seen in the factory museum. The 40th model has long been removed from the assembly line, so we can only talk about buying a used tractor. Since the MTZ-40 was produced for only a few years, the number of offers for sale is minimal.

When studying the used Ukrainian market, the impression was created that owners significantly inflate the cost of the cars they sell. The price range of equipment that is in a very unsatisfactory technical condition starts from 1000 USD. A significant part of the proposals are T-40 tractors, which have nothing to do with the products of the Minsk plant.

This segment presents earlier models MTZ-2 and MTZ-5, identical in power and other parameters. These machines, in turn, became the basis for the creation of the MTZ-50 tractors and all-wheel drive MTZ-52, which are in demand in all spheres of the national economy.

Another prototype of the 40th model is the LTZ-T-40 tractor, which was produced by the Lipetsk Tractor Plant for several decades. The only advantage of this less powerful car with a 37-horsepower power unit is its forced air cooling. This tractor is characterized by disadvantages that are absent in the design of the MTZ-40. These are special motor oils that are operable at temperatures not lower than 55°C, with strict restrictions on the duration of operation of the power unit at low and idle speeds.

Engine design features

The design of the T-40 tractors is based on diesel engines, which were produced by the Vladimir Tractor Plant.
The basic model of the tractor is equipped with a D-37 engine with a rated power of about 38 hp. With. Modifications of the units, which were produced a few years later, were equipped with D-144 engines with a power of 50 hp. With. with reduced fuel consumption. Both engines are 4-cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled designs. The engines are not equipped with crankcases, and removable in-line cylinders are equipped with radiator fins designed for better heat dissipation.

To ensure that the oil in the oil pump is cooled faster and more efficiently, tractor engines have additional radiators. They turn off in winter, and in summer the radiators turn on again. If this is not enough to cool the oil, then a generator must be connected to the engine, which will help reduce the temperature of the liquid. It is important to remember that the equipment must be connected strictly according to the generator connection diagram. Oil temperature data is displayed on separate sensors located on the instrument panel inside the cabin.

The motors are brought into working condition by means of an electric starter or, which is much less common, by means of a PD-8 starting gasoline engine. In any case, the driver must pre-install the ignition according to the diagram in the operating instructions.

Even taking into account the presence of disadvantages in the cooling system, the motors of the T-40 units are still considered the most reliable. They can withstand significant loads not only when the tractor is used as a cultivator, but also in situations where it is necessary to work in tandem with a rear loader.

Owner reviews

I bought a “magpie” from the Minsk plant, written off by public utilities, back in 2004, literally at the cost of scrap metal. After a thorough repair, the car received a second life. The village is small, however, there is enough work; I earn money for fuel by plowing vegetable gardens, delivering urgent cargo and food from the regional center to the local store. In spring and autumn, my trouble-free MTZ is the only means of communication with the outside world. Alexey Ivanovich

I study at an agricultural college. On our farm we have an MTZ-40, donated by our bosses, which we service ourselves and gain driving skills along the way. In winter, the tractor is used to clear the streets of snow. The machine is at full speed, especially since many spare parts are suitable for MTZ-50 and YuMZ tractors. Yura

Tractor MTZ-40

MTZ-40 is a wheeled universal row-crop tractor, produced for a short time at the Minsk Tractor Plant.
This equipment was intended for cultivating soil in greenhouses, gardens, and performing row-crop work and belonged to the 0.9 traction class. MTZ-40 was also used for transporting goods and carrying out transport activities. In the history of the Minsk Tractor Plant, this model is given little space. Its production began in the middle of the 20th century, at that time the company was diligently increasing the production of MTZ-2, MTZ-5 and MTZ-5L. Active work was also carried out to modernize them. Soon the MTZ-40 appeared. However, the model did not exist for long, becoming the progenitor of more popular modifications.

Initially, the USSR authorities showed great interest in the creation of Belarus-40. As a result, the designers of the Minsk Tractor Plant began to implement the project, approved by the Main Automotive and Tractor Institute. A few years later, prototypes of the MTZ-40 appeared, after which the tractor was recommended for mass production. The model received a diesel engine and reduced weight, which allowed it to do its job more efficiently, reaching speeds of up to 24 km/h.

Known modifications of T-40 tractors

During the production period of the T-40 tractor, its design changed frequently, which was a consequence of the emergence of several popular modifications of the unit. We offer an overview of the most famous of them.

The main difference between the models was the engine used by the manufacturer. The family of units with D-37 engines consisted of three models, each of which had its own characteristics and differences:

  • Model T-40A is an all-wheel drive unit with modified electrical wiring. The car was equipped with an improved transmission and clutch, which made it possible to use it in the construction and repair of roads;
  • The T-40AN tractor is also an all-wheel drive model that allows you to connect a high-power generator. This made it possible to get rid of problems in cases where the car is difficult to start when cold. This model had a reduced ground clearance, which did not allow it to be used for work on slopes;
  • Model T-50A was designed specifically to work in tandem with a loader. This unit was designed for work in the industrial sector. It was difficult to obtain spare parts for it even during the period of active tractor production.

The next few models of domestic tractors were equipped with D-144 engines. In terms of appearance, they differed from models with the 37th engine in the rectangular shape of the hood, while on units with D-37 engines it was slightly rounded on the sides. The family with D-144 engines includes:

  • The T-40M tractor is a unit with rear-wheel drive. Used for various jobs in the garden, field and production. If it was necessary to improve the performance of the machine, the owner only had to replace the release bearing and change several clutch elements;

  • The T-40AM model is an all-wheel drive unit, which was equipped with an improved gearbox and clutch to improve maneuverability. It was possible to install a small tiller, harrow, plow and other equipment on it;
  • The T-40AP tractor was produced exclusively for work in public utilities. This machine was practically never used in the field;
  • T-40ANM - this model was intended for processing soil on slopes. Equipped with powerful standard lugs for better traction with the ground.

Each of the representatives of the T-40 tractors has found its application and is still actively used in the fields or in production.

Specifications

  • MTZ-40 had a total weight of 2.595 tons with medium dimensions.
  • The height of the tractor was 2100 mm, length – 3660 mm, width – 1620 mm.
  • The specific fuel consumption of the model was 182 g/hp. at one o'clock.

The tractor received a D-40 diesel engine, which made it possible to slightly reduce fuel consumption. Positive changes were caused by the advent of the engine power supply system and improvements made to the gas distribution principle. Thus, the motor head acquired increased flow sections of the exhaust and suction channels, as well as valve plates of larger diameter. The power system has a new air cleaner combined with the old purifier. The engine fuel filters have also undergone modernization. Some heavy elements of the unit have been replaced with lighter counterparts. "Belarus-40" was equipped with a separate-aggregate hydraulic system, which affected the type of engine. Some of its elements had to be positioned differently.
