Good day! The other day I brought one and a half cubic meters of “garden fertilizer” on my trailer, and I needed to unhitch the loaded trailer, I couldn’t lift the drawbar, I had to use a jack. And I decided that instead of a regular support, I needed to make a retractable support wheel for such cases. Buy for my “little old man” for 2 thousand rubles. I didn’t want to and decided to make this device from a jack from a VAZ 2101, a piece of half-inch pipe, a 40x250x4mm strip, and a supermarket trolley wheel. Manufacturing process: I cut off the lower stop of the jack, unscrewed the “stuffing” consisting of a square nut and a bracket that is inserted into the jacking pipes. Then I welded a half-inch pipe to the square nut, and screwed the welded structure into the inside of the jack. I welded a guide for the tube to the bottom of the jack and used a flat washer from the railway fastening. ways.
I welded a wheel nut to the bottom of the tube and screwed the wheel to it.
To attach it to the trailer drawbar and quickly raise the support wheel, I made a 40x40 mm pipe from a 40x40 mm pipe, cutting a slot in it so that the jack could be clamped. To eliminate large gaps, I inserted 4mm thick strips into the profile pipe and welded them. I made the clamp for attaching the leg to the drawbar from a 40x250x4 mm strip, heating it with a cutter and bending it on a piece of 4x40 profile pipe, since my drawbar is 40x40 mm. To fix the clamp, I drilled holes D8.5 mm in it. After that, everything that needed to be processed was sanded with a machine.
Hello, friends! Each of us strives to make the operation of our car and accessories as convenient and practical as possible. One of these components is the support wheel for the trailer. It's movable. But call it what you want.
This is not just a support, but a means of significantly simplifying the handling of a caravan, making it easy and quick to move without using the vehicle itself.
Trailer support wheel
Typically a trailer has two wheels. If you detach it from the car, it will need another support point. Previously, a support leg was used for this purpose. A more convenient solution is to use a trailer wheel. In this case, it is possible to move the trailer independently, spending relatively little effort. In this case, there is no need to lift its front part and keep it suspended while moving.
The support wheel can be purchased together with the trailer
If you install a support wheel, its owner will have the following capabilities:
- Additional convenience when using. Having such an installed structure, the owner can easily remove the trailer from the garage or put it in place. It will not be difficult to transport the trailer to another location if the need arises.
- The presence of this design greatly simplifies the procedure for attaching to a car.
- Now, when raising the trailer, you can adjust the height of the support wheel.
- The presence of this design makes the operation of the trailer much safer. This is due to the fact that if it is accidentally disconnected while driving, it will become one of the support points and will not allow the trailer to fall onto the tongue.
Design Features
- Mechanical ones have two tubes in their design, which are nested one inside the other. A support is attached to the inner one, and the outer one is attached to the trailer drawbar. The inner part can be moved vertically to adjust the height.
- The automatic design can switch between two states. While driving, it folds up so as not to interfere with movement. When the car stops, it straightens and becomes a support.
Support wheel design
Before proceeding with installation, it would not hurt to understand the structure of the device and the principle of its operation.
First of all, according to their design, they are divided into two types:
- Mechanical - based on two pipes nested inside each other. The support is held in place by the inner tube, the outer one is installed to the shaft or drawbar of the trailer. The inner part is movable within the vertical plane. This is designed specifically so that the height can be adjusted depending on the current need.
- Automatic - have two main states: when moving, the wheel can fold, and thus not interfere with driving, and when at rest, it straightens and becomes a supporting support for the entire structure.
The structure of the device is quite simple: the screw jack is fixed together with the idler wheel on the drawbar and fastened with rotary clamps, providing additional mobility of the structure.
The most current models are wheels located on a flat vertical support, which can be easily moved up and down. To give a comfortable position, they are fixed with screws, and the structure does not move anywhere.
Other types of dolly wheels include:
- removable - removed and mounted, when necessary;
- folding - in working condition they provide support, and when moving it is assembled so that it does not interfere with driving.
All this is taken into account when installing a wheel on a passenger trailer.
Support wheel mounted to the drawbar
How to choose a trailer support wheel
There are several varieties of this structural unit:
- With a removable design, the wheel can be removed or installed in situations where it is needed.
- The folding version ensures that when stopped, the structure assumes a working position and the trailer rests on it. During movement, the support folds so as not to interfere with movement.
- The most common option provides that such a wheel is located on a vertical straight support, which can be moved down or up, secured in the desired position with screws.
You can select the appropriate load capacity by taking into account the following information:
- If the trailer is designed for 750 kg, it is sufficient to use a wheel designed for 150 kg.
- For those whose maximum load capacity ranges from 1000 to 2500 kg, a wheel that can handle a load of up to 300 kg is suitable.
- If the trailer is even more powerful and capable of carrying up to 4000 kg of cargo, then you can use a wheel with a load capacity of 500 kg.
It is necessary to distinguish which wheels are used. They may be made using tires or consist of rubber. The first option provides a smoother movement, but will require more maintenance than the second option.
If the coating on the metal is galvanic galvanizing, then this is more reliable protection against corrosion compared to painting. This increases the life of the device.
Popular models of support wheels
Popular European companies producing support wheels for trailers:
- WINTERHOFF – Germany.
- AL-KO – Germany
- SPP - Poland.
- KNOTT-Autoflex – Hungary.
The most popular samples:
- AL-KO COMPACT 200x50 with a dynamic load of 90 kg, statistical load - 150. Corrosion-resistant.
The trailer wheel is an auxiliary tool that allows you to handle the unit in the most practical way. This is not an ordinary support, but a tool that simplifies the operation of the trailer. It makes it easier and faster to move without the help of a machine.
Video about the advantages of a support wheel on a light trailer
Making a trailer support wheel with your own hands is an interesting option to hone your skills. And when choosing a factory version, you should pay attention to the presence of a bearing in the handle, which will simplify and prolong the use of the device.
How to make a do-it-yourself wheel for a light trailer
To make it, you will need the following:
- An old jack for a Lada or something similar.
- A wheel that will be attached to the bottom. It can be purchased at the appropriate store.
- A metal plate will be needed.
- Bolts for fastening.
- Primer and paint will be required.
- You need a drill and drill bits of the appropriate size.
- Welding machine.
- Brushes for painting structures.
Made by yourself
You will need to do the following:
- Holes are made in the plate and in the drawbar for bolts that will hold them together.
- A metal plate needs to be welded to the jack. It should be located in a vertical plane and attached to the top of the jack.
- A wheel is welded to the bottom.
- The finished structure is primed and painted in order to protect it from environmental influences.
- Now the structure is bolted to the trailer drawbar. It is possible to make this connection by welding, but in this case the structure cannot be removed.
Useful tips
When making it, it makes sense to pay attention to the following:
- Since the structure will be outdoors for a long time, it must be protected from the influence of bad weather. To do this, it will need to be painted.
- The wheel is welded to a metal base, which was used as a support when working with the jack.
- Although you can purchase a small wheel, it is nevertheless better to purchase a more powerful one that is more convenient for movement.
When folded
How to make a wheel alignment with your own hands: a simple technique
To install the finished device, you just need to attach the structure to the trailer drawbar using bolts. To do this, a place for installation is selected and prepared. It must be located in a place where the attached element will not interfere with movement and create problems during operation. Everything is done taking into account the comfortable use of the trailer by a person.
Holes for fastening have already been made on the plate and drawbar. They are used for fixing to the trailer.
Some people prefer to weld the elements to each other. The disadvantage of this method is that if it is necessary to repair the device, it will be difficult to disassemble it.
In this way, you can significantly save on the purchase of useful equipment that can be used in agriculture, or in order to simply unload unnecessary trash from the site. The effort and several days of waiting eventually pay for themselves.
Swivel clamp for support wheel
This assembly is designed so that the support can be easily brought into position for movement without the need to disconnect or adjust the height.
Its connection to the drawbar is made in such a way that to perform a turn, you need, according to the drawing, to pull back the metal plate, rotate the structure 90 degrees and release this part. After this, the stand will be securely fixed in a horizontal position.
If you need to place the support vertically, you need to pull the clamp a little, put the stand vertically and release this part. It will snap into place in the new position, securely locking the wheel.
Swivel clamp
What are its functions?
The swivel clamp is needed to perform the following functions:
- The support wheel is securely fastened during movement and protected from accidental damage.
- With its help, the time spent on raising and lowering the support is significantly reduced.
This device allows you to spend less effort on working with the support wheel.
Using a wheel allows you to use the trailer with much greater efficiency and convenience, allowing you to move it yourself without much effort if the need arises.
Trailer support wheel: design options, ease of use
Hello, friends! Each of us strives to make the operation of our car and accessories as convenient and practical as possible. One of these components is the support wheel for the trailer. It's movable. But call it what you want.
This is not just a support, but a means of significantly simplifying the handling of a caravan, making it easy and quick to move without using the vehicle itself.
What functions does the support wheel perform?
Its fundamental task is to create support for the trailer on one axle and make it more convenient to move. It allows you to do this without the help of a car. This device ensures the stability of the trailer when transporting goods.
Additional functions of the device:
- Ease of moving the trailer without attaching it to the car.
- It is easier to connect to the car's tow bar.
- To raise the trailer, you only need to change the height at which the wheel is located.
- Provides more reliable use of the structure;
In the event that the trailer accidentally moves away from the tow bar, the risk of breaking the tongue is minimal, since it maintains its stability thanks to the support wheel.
Tasks
The undercarriage wheel performs an extremely simple but very useful task. It makes it possible to move a trailer without connecting it to a car and without trying to park or move it somewhere with complex maneuvers.
Initially, a support leg with a clamp was used for a passenger trailer. This design made it possible to basically fix the towed vehicle in one place. But if the driver could exert certain physical efforts, then it was possible to move the vehicle.
The undercarriages are mounted on the trailer drawbar, secured with a clamp or by welding. A rotary clamp is preferable because it allows you to give the wheel an optimal position when moving the vehicle.
With the help of rolling wheels, these procedures were made simpler and physically easier. Now you don’t need to strain all your strength to lift and hold the trailer suspended.
Main advantages
Good support with undercarriage wheel provides a high level of operating comfort for the driver. You can make support wheels yourself. To do this, you will need special wheels without a rod, some metal tubes and a number of auxiliary parts.
If you don’t want to bother with assembly or a homemade device doesn’t inspire confidence, you can simply buy it in Moscow, Novosibirsk, Samara, St. Petersburg or Yekaterinburg, for example. Yes, in any city you can find this simple device. I don't recommend buying a used one. The price of the device is low, and buying a used device is always a risk.
What is the support wheel for?
The purpose of the support wheel for a passenger trailer is to allow the entire structure to be moved without using the vehicle itself for this purpose. The dolly wheel replaced the support leg with a clamp. The second option is intended primarily for fixing the product in one place, but also allows it to be moved by applying a certain physical force.
A trailer wheel significantly facilitates this process, as it does not require the use of physical force to lift and hold the product suspended.
Recommendations for selection
The structure can be installed on any type of trailer. Therefore, if you have MZSA or Krepysh, for example, it is easy to supplement them with such a system. And for a boat trailer, a dolly wheel will only be beneficial.
But you still need to choose the right device. You need to rely on several basic parameters:
- type of construction;
- load capacity parameters;
- type of tire;
- disk version, etc.
I suggest going through the points separately. This will allow you to understand what types of support wheels there are, what the difference is between them and which one should be preferred specifically in your case.
Removable or foldable
Start with this. Removable devices are installed on the support leg when it is necessary to fix the vehicle in one place and move it as necessary.
There are also foldable designs. Here, when lowering the trailer, the stand with the wheel in automatic mode is installed in its working position. When the vehicle is connected to the car’s towbar, the entire structure folds under the drawbar and does not interfere with further operation at all.
On some rolling devices, the function of adjusting the height of the support leg is available.
Automatic or manual
Support wheels are either automatic or mechanical.
- The mechanical design is presented in the form of two tubes - a body and a rod on which the wheel itself is mounted. By rotating the handle through a screw gear, the rod extends out of the body or moves into it, allowing the drawbar to be lowered or raised. That’s why the device is also called telescopic;
- The automatic version is also telescopic, but the design is complemented by the movement of the bracket on which the wheel stands. By expanding the device, the rod extends and the bracket is pressed out along with the tire. By folding, the rod is hidden and the support wheel is pressed.
The automatic has obvious advantages, although if the trailer is rarely used, this will not particularly affect the driver’s comfort level.
Load capacity
Based only on photos and videos, it is impossible to say exactly what load the device is designed for. And in terms of carrying capacity, they can differ significantly. This figure varies from 150 to 500 kilograms for passenger trailers.
If you have a small trailer up to 750 kg, then it is enough to take a support with a vertical load parameter of up to 150 kg. When the total vehicle weight is 1-2.5 tons, the support wheel is selected at 300 kg. Already in the case of cargo trailers, a load capacity of 800 to 1500 kg is required.
Additionally, I advise you to pay attention to the support bearing in the handle of the support wheel. If there is one, it will simplify and extend the life of the device.
Tires and wheels
Rubber can be solid or pneumatic. Pneumatic tires have smoother driving characteristics. But this advantage hides the need for careful maintenance of the structure. Therefore, think for yourself what is your priority.
As for disks, they come in plastic and steel. There is no particular difference in operating conditions between them. They both can withstand the load for which they were designed. Although for some, the disc material may play a role in the choice.
If we talk about manufacturers, then I can’t give specific recommendations. Each one has its own characteristics and requirements. Plus, everyone has different financial capabilities.
Let me just say that buying cheap devices makes no sense. They wear out quickly and cause more trouble than they are useful. The running wheels are from Winterhoff, Al-Ko, SPP and Knott. These are all European companies that have proven themselves well in the Russian market.
That's all. Thank you very much for your attention! I hope I was able to help you in choosing a support wheel, and you will be able to find the right option for your caravan. If you have questions, ask in the comments. We will try to answer quickly.

I have a question, it concerns the quality of the disks. Is it possible to put a titanium disk on a road wheel? And how much does it cost?
I haven't seen any of these personally. In theory it is possible!
Choosing a trailer wheel
In fact, choosing such a device is not quite simple, since there is a fairly significant variety of available options. Removable type - installed on the supporting leg only when it is necessary to fix the trailer in one place and then be able to easily move it from place to place.
Folding option - what is it? When the trailer is lowered onto a support, such a structure is automatically set to its working position. When connecting a car trailer to a vehicle, the trailer support wheel is hidden under the drawbar of the entire structure, thereby not at all interfering with road traffic, even in extreme conditions. There are also options that allow you to easily change the height of the support leg, which ends with such a wheel.
Naturally, the trailer support wheel clamp is the most important component of the entire structure. It is this part of the product that allows a person to easily control a rather large and not the lightest design, which is a trailer for a passenger car.
Any car enthusiast also has a choice of how to become the owner of such a system:
- Purchase a trailer immediately with the support wheel installed.
- Order a similar service for your property from one of the auto repair shops.
- Make the upgrade yourself if you have free time and some experience in this matter.
Why do you need a support wheel on a trailer and how to make it yourself
Cars are quite often operated in tandem with trailers. This allows you to significantly expand the capacity of the car, transport more things and load into the trailer what does not fit in the passenger compartment or luggage compartment.
Most passenger trailers have one axle, that is, they stand on 2 wheels. When disconnected from the vehicle, the trailer requires another point of support so as not to tip over or lean backwards. Previously, support legs were widely used for this. But a dodger wheel turned out to be a more functional and practical solution.
Some trailer models are equipped with these supports from the factory or are offered as additional components and accessories. But there are also motorists who prefer to do it themselves. In practice, this is not difficult, plus no additional permits are required for their operation. This is not considered a structural modification to the trailer.
Main advantages of the support wheel
A trailer wheel has an extensive list of positive qualities:
- Makes it easier to move the trailed unit.
- Makes it easier to grip the towbar ball with the coupling head using a jacking mechanism.
- Does not require an additional stand for the drawbar.
- Provides safety when uncoupling a trailer from a tow bar, taking the impact of the fall on itself.
- The simple design allows you to create a support wheel for a trailer with your own hands.
- Quite low cost.
What are support wheels used for?
By installing a dolly or support wheel on your car trailer, you can get a number of additional benefits.
The key purpose is to provide support and the ability to move a single-axle trailer without the participation of the vehicle itself, avoiding the risk of it tipping over. If such a wheel is present on the trailer, you will not have to lift the front part of the vehicle to move it, applying significant physical effort.
There are several main tasks and advantages of a trolley or support wheel:
- additional comfort when using a trailer, since it can be brought in and rolled out of the garage without a car;
- the wheel makes it much easier and faster to connect the trailer to the towbar on the car;
- the trailer can be raised by changing the height of the support wheel;
- with it, the operation of the trailer becomes safer;
- In case of accidental disconnection from the towbar, the trailer remains with additional support, reducing the risk of damage to the drawbar.
Before buying or assembling an engine compartment wheel yourself, it is worth studying the design features and understanding a little about the essence of the device.
Structurally, they can be divided into 2 types.
- Mechanical. They are created on the basis of two tubes that are inserted into each other. A support is fixed to the inner tube, and the outer one is mounted on the trailer drawbar. The inner part can be moved in a vertical plane to adjust the height.
- Automatic. Can switch to 2 states. When driving, the wheel folds so as not to impede movement. When stopping, the vehicle straightens and the trailer receives additional support.
When choosing a design, you should focus on what a particular motorist needs.
When studying the design features, it is worth highlighting these types of idler wheels.
- Removable. They are mounted and removed from the trailer as needed.
- Foldable. When installed, they assume their working position and provide support for the trailer. When moving, the support is folded, so it does not interfere with movement.
The most common models so far are support wheels, which are located on a straight vertical support, moved up and down, and fixed in the required position with screws.
When choosing a rolling wheel, you must take into account the load capacity parameters. They are mainly in the range from 150 to 500 kg.
- For trailers up to 750 kg. It is quite enough to have a load capacity of the support wheel of 150 kg.
- With a trailer load capacity of 1 to 2.5 tons, it is better to take the wheel with a load of about 300 kg.
- For trailers capable of hauling about 4 tons of cargo, the engine compartment wheels must have a load capacity of 500 kg.
Choosing a support wheel for a trailer
Purchasing a support wheel for a trailer involves tracking some of its technical characteristics:
- Device type.
- Principle of operation.
- Payload.
- Material for making tires and wheels.
Removable or foldable:
- The folding device is hinged on the drawbar and folds underneath it when moving. When the trailer is lowered, it becomes operational.
- Removable - does not have a rigid connection to the unit and is installed as needed.
Foldable support wheel on trailer
Automatic or manual?
Diagram of an automatically folding support wheel on a trailer
The design of the support wheel is a telescopic system, that is, two tubes: a rod and a housing. The automatic system implies the presence of a bracket, when pressed, the wheel automatically lowers down. And the mechanical one is a conventional jacking device.
Load capacity of support wheel. Varies from 0.15 to 0.5 tons for passenger cars:
- 0.15 – for a trailer with a gross weight of up to 0.75 tons.
- 0.3 – with a mass of 1 to 2.5 tons.
- 0.5 – up to 3.5 tons.
Support wheel made of solid rubber trailer KMZ 8284 51
For trucks the value is higher than 0.8-1.5 tons.
Rubber and rims for the road wheel are an important component. The trailer support wheel is equipped with a pneumatic tire or solid rubber. Pneumatic tires have better grip on the road surface and do not slip on sand, but require timely inflation.
Regarding disks, they are made of plastic or steel. Although plastic can withstand significant loads, steel wheels have a greater safety margin.
DIY assembly
There are many diagrams and examples of making support wheels for a trailer with your own hands, which opens up additional opportunities for motorists. Factory kits are quite expensive, plus not everyone sees the point of spending money on them if you can make a full-fledged analogue yourself.
You can assemble a homemade version of the undercarriage wheel practically from scrap materials. Mainly the following components are required:
- old screw-type jack or similar design;
- a wheel that will act as a support;
- metal plate;
- mounting bolts;
- primer;
- dye;
- metal drills;
- drill;
- welding machine;
- brushes or spray bottle for painting.
It is optimal to use a ready-made drawing, according to which high-quality and functional support wheels were assembled. Although here you can work from scratch by creating your own drawing indicating all dimensions.
The procedure for making a rolling wheel consists of the following steps:
- A durable metal plate is cut to the size of the site where it will be located.
- Mounting holes must be made in the metal plate and in the trailer tongue itself to connect these two components.
- A metal plate is welded to the jack. It should be positioned in a vertical plane and fixed to the top of the jack.
- A wheel is welded from the bottom using a welding machine.
- Having prepared the structure, you can treat it with a metal primer in several layers, and then apply 2-3 layers of paint.
- The resulting structure is mounted on the drawbar of a car trailer using a bolted connection.
Some use welding to make the connection. But this is not the best option, since then the structure will turn out to be non-demountable.
It is recommended to lubricate bolted connections with heat-resistant compounds, which will ensure ease of tightening and dismantling in any weather.
This is an example of a simple support wheel, which is assembled literally from scrap materials. To improve the design, you can use a swivel clamp.
Design Features
There are different types of trailer wheels.
- The mechanical version is made of two tubes inserted into one another. A support is attached to the inner tube, and to the outer tube there is a mechanism for attaching to the drawbar. Height adjustment occurs by moving the internal part;
- The automatic option switches between two states. The support wheel is nested when moving so as not to interfere with the free movement of the trailer. When the car is stopped it automatically straightens, thus becoming a support.
Swivel clamp
This is the name of a special unit that allows you to change the position of the support depending on the need to drive a car or move a trailer without the participation of a car. In this case, you will not have to disconnect or adjust anything if there is a rotary clamp.
The connection between the clamp and the drawbar is made in such a way that when turning, the metal plate is pulled back and the structure is rotated 90 degrees. After such manipulations, the stand is securely fixed in a horizontal position.
If it is necessary to place the support vertically, the clamp is pulled back, the stand is placed in a vertical position and the element is released. It clicks into place in the selected position. Reliable, safe and practical.
In fact, the rotary clamp performs several main tasks:
- Allows you to reliably fix the dolly wheel while the car is moving with a trailer, protecting it from possible accidental damage.
- Significantly reduces the time required to lower and raise the trolley support as needed.
- Saves effort on operating the support wheel.
As you can clearly see, the support wheel is indeed a very useful addition. This is especially true for a single-axle trailer, since two-axle trailers are more stable and do not actually need a dolly wheel.
Making a support yourself, ordering production from craftsmen, or buying a factory kit is a personal choice for everyone. If you have free time and basic skills in working with metal and a welding machine, then it won’t be too difficult to assemble the structure yourself.
If you want to have confidence in the quality, safety and reliability of the undercarriage wheel, contact trusted manufacturers. Most factories that produce trailers offer a wide range of accessories and components, including support legs and wheels.
Making your own bicycle trailer
The support leg is a stabilizing structure for connecting to a trailer. It does not have a rolling wheel. In the lower part, “nickels” are nailed to such legs.
In this case, the legs are installed on the sides of the trailer in its rear part, and look like a small stand with a handle.
Another installation option could be this: the legs are placed at all four corners of the trailer. Such support stands are screw jacks that support the trailer platform created by the structure.
The support leg, as a rule, comes separately from the trailer. They buy it specially. You won’t see this in any factories where someone would put a support stand into a basic kit for a caravan. This is done in order to reduce product prices.
It turns out that the need to purchase a support stand is determined by everyone for himself, depending on the needs and purposes of the transport used. But it is obvious that this detail is definitely necessary and useful.

Do-it-yourself trailer axle: how to assemble the spring mount to the frame - support and brakes
In the farming process, anything that can make work easier is highly valued. This is not the easiest work, but it is honest and rewarding - the land always pays well to those who roll up their sleeves to work on it.
A good harvest always pleases a good owner, but to achieve it requires work and ingenuity, especially when it comes to technology.
It is very difficult to do without it, especially when it comes to large volumes of work, both at the beginning of the field work season and at the end, during harvesting.
Therefore, in order to save money and make labor easier, many farmers purchase walk-behind tractors - equipment that is many times cheaper than tractors, but practically not inferior to them in functionality and usefulness.
Despite the fact that their power is less, and the basis of the design is one axis, they have long been learned to adapt to economic needs in order to achieve maximum benefit and productivity.
The process itself will take only a few days, and even less if you have all the necessary tools and materials. But the result will be simply wonderful - the scope of application of the modified technology will immediately increase.
You will be able to save much more time and effort, not to mention money, because having your own personal transport for transporting cargo, there will be no need to use the services of others - you can do everything yourself. In this case, all expenses will be reduced to just the purchase of fuel.
And thus, at any time of the day throughout the year, you will have at your disposal an indispensable assistant in all work related to housekeeping, field work and freight transportation, although not over very long distances, but of large volume.
Device
A trailer for a walk-behind tractor is, in fact, a modern variation of a chaise for a horse team - the operating principle is actually the same.
It is precisely in order to turn a walk-behind tractor into a universal tool that can facilitate many tasks, make work easier and bring a lot of benefits, below we will describe how to make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.
The walk-behind tractor is used as a drive, and a trailer is attached to it using a drawbar. In this case, a wide variety of walk-behind tractors can be used, for example, Cayman 320, Patriot Ural, Texas, Foreman, Crosser, Viking, Forza. The functionality of such a device also remained unchanged - the trailer is suitable for transporting goods: crops, firewood, mother-in-law.
Moreover, its load capacity is high, thanks to the specific operation of the walk-behind tractor, which can pull large loads at low speeds.
The trailer is a monolithic structure - a box with wooden walls, with a tightly welded frame made of corners.
It is placed on a rigid frame, on springs, like on a carriage, and is attached to the walk-behind tractor with a special hinge mount.
Also, both factories and craftsmen make a dump trailer for a walk-behind tractor - a design that is very similar to a regular trailer, but with a modification that allows unloading by tilting the box.
Although such a trailer is more difficult to manufacture, and a ready-made factory version is much more expensive, such a modification is still much more convenient and practical than a simple trailer.
As for purchasing a ready-made trailer made in a factory or workshop, there is no need for it, because you can make this device yourself from scrap materials.
There is nothing difficult about this, especially for the owner of direct hands, which, without a doubt, everyone who runs a household has.

Necessary materials
In order to assemble a good trailer, you first need to study the drawing in detail. Good orientation in the work ahead is already half the battle.
In addition, knowledge of the drawing will allow you to navigate the upcoming work much better, and perhaps make it easier to work on some complex components, such as the hinge connecting the walk-behind tractor to the trailer. It is always better to know in advance what you will face.
As for the most successful design options, where material costs are minimized and the design is brought to the ideal, these are do-it-yourself trailers for the Neva walk-behind tractor, the drawings of which are very common on the Internet.
As for the necessary tools and materials that will be needed to make a trailer, the most necessary ones, which cannot be avoided, are:
- Wheels. Any large diameter will do. These can be either wheels from a motorized stroller or car wheels.
- Axis. It is very good if the axle is together with the original wheels. In this case, their additional configuration will not be required.
- Spars of transverse type. This is the most ordinary corner, 40*40 in size, 4 millimeters thick - it will fit perfectly.
- Longitudinal spars, which require the same angle.
- Longitudinal joint housing. In this case, a 58*4 mm pipe is best suited. It’s not worth taking more, since it will simply be heavier, but will not affect the strength of the structure in any way.
- Reinforcing cross member. This is the same iron corner 40*40, 4 millimeters thick.

Instructions
Before you make a trailer for the Sadko, Don, Huter, Profi, Plowman, Champion, Carver, Husqvarna walk-behind tractor, you should consider that the lighter it is, the better for you. On average, such a trailer can withstand 400-500 kilograms of weight; overload is an additional load on a not very powerful engine, which is fraught with consequences.
Therefore, in case overload cannot be avoided, it would be better to have a small reserve in the form of savings on the weight of the structure itself. Another important point is the welding machine.
Welding seams hold any metal structure much stronger than self-tapping screws.
Although they are also needed for fastening body elements - boards and beams, if you decide to use wood, or tin, if you prefer metal. But in other connections their use is highly undesirable, especially in the supporting frame.
In order to make a good and reliable frame, it is not necessary to rely on drawings. Sizes should be selected based on practicality, at personal discretion. First of all, you need to make the frame to which the carrier will subsequently be attached.
The frame should be reinforced with metal corners, which will give it additional strength. Next, the sides tilt towards the frame, which can be either tightly welded or folding. Blind sides are much stronger than folding sides, but if it is not a dump truck, all the cargo will have to be unloaded through them.
Be sure to attach the hinges to the sides. They will help secure a bulky load - it will not fall out when bending or making sharp maneuvers.
The chassis is the most important component of the entire trailer design.
When installing the sieves, be as careful as possible and under no circumstances rush, since very soon you will have to redo everything again. First of all, you need to prepare the axle. This may be an axle with wheels, but if one is not available, a rod with a diameter of 30 millimeters will do.
The axle is attached at several points using welding and angles - to the side members and the longitudinal hinge. Also, it is worth using corner supports for maximum fixation of the axle; here you should also take care of how to make brakes for the trailer, they will be very useful in the future.
It’s worth thinking about how to make a trailer hitch in advance, since there are many options for solving this problem. But you can use the most optimal option - a swivel joint, which will allow you to achieve the greatest maneuverability.
Also, it is worth considering the fact that most of the surfaces on which a walk-behind tractor with a trailer will move are uneven. Therefore, an excellent solution would be to create a console that will allow the axles of the trailer and walk-behind tractor to move independently of each other. It will consist of several parts.
The first is a holder, which must be fixed in the bracket of the walk-behind tractor attachment. An ideal example of the best shape to give it is a similar piece in a hiller. In this case, it is very important to repeat its shape in size. If necessary, you can make attachments for the walk-behind tractor with your own hands.
The second part is a kind of axis, secured by bearings, which, in a fixed position, rotates freely relative to the bracket. The drawbar is secured in the body of the longitudinal hinge using a thrust ring. The result is a kind of independent suspension, which greatly facilitates control.
As for its reliability, it is worth strengthening it as best as possible with the help of stiffeners at all joints. Thus, even during overloads, you will protect yourself from sudden failure on solid metal or a weld seam. At the end of the work, a saddle and a driver’s foot rest are attached to the almost finished trailer.
In the original version, the saddle frame is firmly welded to its stand, which, in turn, sits rigidly on the frame. But in order to make the place more comfortable, you can show a little imagination and equip the structure with springs.
Thus, the time spent sitting while shaking, on not the best roads, will not cause pain at the end of the working day.
Wheel selection criteria
A passenger trailer is a special vehicle, not equipped with an engine, capable of traveling in combination with motorcycles, cars, tractors, etc.
Trailers are used for transporting large and small cargo and any equipment: motor boats, motorboats, ATVs, snowmobiles.
Depending on what type of luggage the trailer was purchased for and how it will be used, wheels are selected.
The approach to choosing wheels for a trailer should be the same as for any car. The main criteria here are:
- wheel rim size;
- wheel strength;
- their weight;
- aesthetics.
The disc dimensions must match the specifications of your trailer. In addition, these dimensions must correspond to the size of the tractor rims.
Experienced owners of towbars say that it is convenient to have the same wheel size on the towing vehicle and on the trailer. Thanks to this, the transport train becomes more manageable and the load is distributed more evenly. This choice of wheels is explained by the comfort for the owner: you can use only one spare wheel for both the towing vehicle and the trailer.
The strength must be sufficient to enable them to withstand the maximum load. Wheel weight is a very important parameter that allows you to ensure optimal controllability of a vehicle towing a trailer and reduce fuel consumption. The aesthetic appearance of a wheel is not the most important criterion, but quite often car owners pay attention to how their road train looks.
Additional Tips and Warnings
Painted or galvanized sheet metal and plastic can be used as materials for finishing the body. Tin will serve for a very long time, and galvanizing is not prone to corrosion. True, over time it bends very much, due to its small thickness, and paint peels off painted sheet metal.
But it works well as an alternative to regular steel sheets. The same applies to plastic - it is a very cheap material compared to the cost of metal. It does not rot and is flexible enough to support a lot of weight. But at the same time, the plastic is quite fragile to impact.
A snowmobile is a very functional and practical means of winter off-road transportation. Polaris snowmobiles are reliable and practical machines for all occasions.
A hand pump sprayer is a device for caring for plants, sprinkling water on plants and watering them. By clicking on the link, you will become familiar with the different types of hand pump sprayers.
Caring for the health of plants is the key to a high-quality harvest, and here it is important to carry out timely preventive measures against diseases and pests that affect garden and vegetable crops. Here's everything about your indispensable assistant - a garden sprayer.
If you carelessly throw a log, you can make a hole in the bottom or side, which cannot be repaired - you will have to replace the entire panel. In order to make driving a walk-behind tractor with a trailer more convenient, it is worth taking into account the center of gravity of the entire vehicle.
The closer it is to the steering wheel, the easier it is to turn and avoid obstacles on the road. But in order for manipulations with the center of gravity to be possible, in principle, it is necessary to shift it on the trailer itself towards the fastening.
This action, together with proper loading of the trailer, will make steering easier and reduce the load on the coupling itself. Another option, if you are afraid of the correct center of gravity, is to make a two-axle trailer.
It does not matter where the greatest weight will be located, above the axle or not, since instead of two stops there are four.
There are no fundamental differences in the designs of trailers with one and two axles, but some nuances are still present: the frame requires additional reinforcement in the middle, especially if the trailer is longer than specified in the instructions.
Additional modifications to the wheels will be required - the springs may be too stiff for such a trailer, which will lead to poor handling on poor, broken dirt roads and in the off-season when the dirt turns to mud.
But still, with the number of axles, the load capacity and useful volume increase.
Choosing tires
Tires for trailer wheels are not divided into summer and winter. Year-round use of all-season tires on a trailer is acceptable in our country. Here you need to keep in mind that when traveling to EU countries, the requirements for tires are different. In summer, summer tires are required for the trailer, and in winter, winter tires are required.
Most often, traditional tube-type tires for heavy-duty trucks are used on trailers. When installing, do not forget that:
- Radial and diagonal tires are not installed on one axle;
- It is prohibited to install tires with different tread patterns on the same axle.
