MAZ-5516 is a heavy-duty truck produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant. The first model rolled off the assembly line in 1994, but the truck has not lost its relevance. Due to its simplicity, reliability, unpretentiousness, it is quite versatile - the machine is used in construction, agriculture, and urban work (street cleaning, garbage removal, etc.). The vehicle is capable of transporting up to 20 tons of bulk cargo.
Design and modifications
The truck has an ascetic, somewhat outdated appearance. The car received a rectangular cabin with rounded edges, a massive black grille, on which is a chrome-plated logo of the Minsk Automobile Plant. The front rectangular massive bumper houses head optics.
Thanks to the cabover design of the truck, the driver gets a good overview.
Optionally, a wing, flashing lights or additional lighting devices can be installed on the roof of the MAZ-5516 truck. The front edges of the cabin are also equipped with aerodynamic pads.
The design is made in the shape of an irregular trapezoid. On the outside, the cargo container is equipped with vertical stiffeners.
For the convenience of drivers, fairly ergonomic steps are provided on the sides of the cabin, thanks to which you can quickly get inside the cabin.
The car can be equipped with two types of cabin:
- Short;
- Extended with a sleeping place.
Attention! On the basis of a truck chassis, agricultural vehicles are created, in particular, grain trucks (the design of this vehicle provides for high body sides and the possibility of two-way unloading of the cargo container).
Cabin MAZ-5516
The interior of the cabin is quite ascetic and modest. Gray “rough” plastic is used as the main finishing material. The seats are trimmed with moderately hard fabric. As for the build quality of the interior trim, it is quite mediocre - when operating a truck, knocking, squeaking, and crunching noises appear inside.
The dashboard greets the driver with the same asceticism as the entire interior space - a set of necessary instruments and controls, a standard stove. In some modifications, the truck is equipped with a standard radio receiver, or is limited to audio preparation.
The advantages of the cabin include its size - compact on the outside, it is quite spacious inside. This applies to both short and long cab versions. The latter is equipped with a full-fledged and quite comfortable sleeping place, which is a real salvation for MAZ-5516 forwarding drivers when transporting goods over long distances.
Drivers can adjust the rearview mirrors in such a way that there are virtually no blind spots left, which, coupled with excellent visibility, increases the comfort and safety of working on the truck.
Other advantages of the salon interior also include:
- High-set driver's seat equipped with a separate spring system. It is also adjustable for reach and backrest angle. A comfortable, ergonomic and high seat promotes good visibility and reduces driver fatigue, even on long trips. The spring system dampens unnecessary vibrations for comfortable control;
- Drivers can adjust the steering column in terms of tilt and reach, which allows even larger drivers to use the heavy-duty vehicle comfortably;
- For the safety of drivers and passengers, the car is equipped with seat belts;
- The salon space is equipped with shelves and niches for personal belongings, tools and documentation. There are also curtains or partitions that separate the “stowage block” from the rest of the cabin space;
- The MAZ-5516 cabin has average quality noise insulation and thermal insulation protection (the first models could not boast of these qualities at all). On cars for long journeys, an autonomous heater is installed.
Attention! The truck is standardly equipped with a pre-heater for the power plant, which greatly facilitates operation in severe frosts.
MAZ-54323: Dependence of speed and saddle height on wheel radius
When a good order comes across, and the car exceeds the road height limit, the first thing drivers do is try to reduce the height of the saddle.
This is especially true for the MAZ-54323 car, because it was designed back in the 70s, and the requirements for trucks were different then. The machine was designed to overcome the longitudinal profile of roads and directions, which determined the high position of the saddle, as well as the installation of wheels with a large diameter and wide profile (to reduce pressure on the soil). 30 years have passed and the requirements for transport on domestic roads have changed. Multi-cube trucks that require a low saddle height have become widespread. When drivers encounter such a problem, they usually immediately throw out the seat post (rib) from under the saddle and replace it with a tens sheet. The next step is to replace the saddle posts with lower ones. Some solve the problem radically and install a low-profile saddle, for example the LOST brand.
This, however, is sometimes not enough and then the last resort remains - reducing the radius of the wheel. People often begin this expensive operation without fully realizing their actions and estimate everything by eye. Let's take a standard MAZ-54323 and see how the height of the saddle and the speed of the car will change depending on the size of the tires. For clarity, let's start with the tallest tire, model ID-304, size 12.00 R-20
. The tire has an outer diameter of 1122 mm and a statistical radius of 0.526 meters.
The statistical radius is the radius of the wheel under load and is less than the natural radius of the wheel. We will not take into account the fact that the wheel grows a little at speed under the influence of centrifugal forces, because this will already be the dynamic radius of the wheel, and it is calculated for each specific vehicle speed and will not greatly affect our calculations.
We will make calculations only for tires with a seat size of 20 and 22.5 inches, and we will not consider tires with a size of 24 inches, because Our industry rarely produces them.
Speed range of MAZ-54323 with ID-304 tires size 12.00 R-20
Thanks to the table, we see that the MAZ-54323 truck on ID-304 tires with size 12.00 R-20 can reach a maximum speed of 107.686 km/h in 8th gear at 2100 rpm. Now, let's replace the ID-304 tires with tires of the I-111A model, size 11.00 R-20

This tire has a statistical radius of 0.505 meters (i.e. it is a low tire), and its height is less than the height of the ID-304 tire by 0.526-0.505 = 0.021 meters or 21 mm.

The use of tires on the truck with a statistical radius reduced by 21 mm reduced the maximum speed of the vehicle in 8th gear at 2100 rpm by 5 km/h and now it is 103.386 km/h.

Depending on the year of manufacture and modification, the machine is equipped with the following diesel power plants:
- YaMZ-238: the power of the power unit is 240 horsepower;
- YaMZ-238D: engine power is 330 horsepower;
- YaMZ-6581.10: the power unit has a power of 400 horsepower;
- Deutz. the engine has 400 horsepower.
The range of engines allows the truck to accelerate to a speed of 88 kilometers per hour.
All power plants comply with the EURO-3 environmental safety class, and the volume of the truck’s fuel tank is 350 liters.
YaMZ-238 power plants consume 32 liters of diesel fuel for every hundred kilometers of travel.
Drivers note that the engines produced at the Yaroslavl Machine-Building Plant are unpretentious, easy to maintain and operate, but less reliable compared to the demanding and “capricious” German Deutz power plants.
The MAZ-5516 car is equipped with a 9-speed manual transmission. Depending on the installed motor, the transmission installed on the truck is manufactured either in Yaroslavl or in Germany - 9JS135A.

The first truck models were equipped with a fairly stiff suspension. However, during the modernization of the car, the design of the springs and the overall strengthening of the suspension with the “spar in spar” technology were improved. The truck is equipped with front and rear independent semi-elliptical leaf spring suspension.
Attention! The truck's suspension allows it to transport loads that significantly exceed the vehicle's maximum load capacity. For example, it is possible to transport cargo weighing 30 tons for a short time, but due to overload, the suspension will quickly fail.
The model is equipped with a parking, spare and auxiliary brake, and also has systems in its design that allow you to connect the brake system of a semi-trailer with a two-wire pneumatic cable.
The brakes of the MAZ-5516 truck act on all wheels of the vehicle; they use an anti-lock braking system in their design. The parking brake also plays the role of a spare; it is used when the main brake system is partially or completely inoperable.
MAZ wheel rim
Today, most MAZ vehicle models ride on discless wheels.
That is, in this design there are only a few spokes and landing surfaces. This way, the tire is neatly mounted on the rim. The rim is fixed to the hub. However, the usual MAZ wheel rims are also popular.

The machine boasts ease of operation, low maintenance and high maintainability. The car is often repaired independently, without contacting specialized service centers.
Attention! Despite the ease of repair, the manufacturer recommends regular scheduled maintenance and inspection. This will increase the reliability of the truck and reduce the likelihood of “sudden” malfunctions. In addition, it is recommended to carry out a major overhaul of the MAZ-5516 power plant in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
The vehicle has a “reserve of carrying capacity,” which often allows it to transport cargo weighing more than 20 tons, and the reliability of the suspension makes it possible to operate the truck in difficult road conditions.
The versatility, reliability and unpretentiousness of the machine allow it to be used in various fields: construction, agriculture and public utilities, and cargo transportation.

Drivers have a wide choice - ultra-budget models and expensive models. It is due to the long production of heavy trucks, and a huge number of used vehicles. When buying a car, you can count on an amount from 150-200 thousand rubles (the most “old” trucks) to 1,900,000-2,400,000 rubles (new cars with different levels of optional equipment).
When purchasing a MAZ-5516 truck, it is recommended:
- Pay attention to the technical and external condition of the car, mileage, operability of the main systems and optional equipment;
- Buy models from 400 thousand rubles. The cheapest options may hide a number of malfunctions and other problems that will lead to unnecessary expenses in the future.
Attention! Purchasing a newer truck will allow you to purchase a vehicle with noise and heat insulation, modern technical and optional equipment, and a more functional and comfortable cabin.
Advantages and disadvantages
The car has both those and other qualities. Basically, most of the disadvantages apply to earlier models:
- low level of interior comfort;
- poor heat and sound insulation;
- weak stove;
- poor anti-corrosion coating, trucks that had just rolled off the assembly line began to “rot” and “bloom” literally after six months;
- poor optional equipment.
Attention! In most newer MAZ-5516 models, these shortcomings have been eliminated, but the car still cannot boast of good anti-corrosion protection. In addition, the quality of the interior assembly and design materials raises certain questions.
The car has many more pros than cons. The benefits include:
- High efficiency. Moderate fuel consumption, low price of spare parts and repair work;
- Easy to use. You can repair the car yourself, and the necessary spare parts are quite easy to buy. The machine does not require special care and is adapted to work in extremely difficult conditions;
- The car has a solid carrying capacity of 20 tons, however, this is not the limit. To increase the weight of the transported cargo, you can connect a trailer and transport up to 30 tons of cargo or materials;
- Price. The cost of a new car is much lower compared to similar trucks. In addition, fairly strong and technically serviceable used trucks can be purchased from 400 thousand rubles;
- Reliable suspension that has stood the test of time and work;
- Powerful, reliable and unpretentious MAZ-5516 engine.
Attention! A large number of negative reviews relate to early models. More modern specimens are free from “mistakes of other things” and can please you with their price-quality ratio.
This is a Soviet and Belarusian heavy-duty vehicle, which is popular not only in its homeland, but also in neighboring countries. This is due to the high reliability of the car, its unpretentiousness, efficiency, power and initially relatively low price. The machine can be used in construction, agriculture, and cargo transportation. The high power of power units often makes it possible to transport loads exceeding the maximum permitted load capacity. However, this significantly reduces the service life of the MAZ-5516. Models that are planned to be used for transporting goods over long distances are equipped with an extended cab with one or two berths. Among the car's shortcomings are a relatively low level of comfort and poor initial equipment.
Basic data of MAZ wheels and tires
The wheels of the car are discless, with removable side 2 (Fig. 49) and lock 3 rings. The locking ring is split and is the second conical flange of the rim for seating the tire. The rim 17 of the wheel has a cone along its inner diameter (under the groove for the locking ring), along which the wheel is centered on the hub.
The front wheels of the car are single, the rear wheels are double. A spacer ring is installed between the rims of the dual wheels. For easy inflation of internal tires, valve extensions are provided.
The wheels are fastened to the hubs by installing them on the conical seating surface of the disk 7 and then pressing them with special clamps 4. In this case, pressing the rear wheel with the outer bevel simultaneously centers and clamps the outer rim of the wheel. The wheel nuts and bolts on the right and left sides have right-hand threads.
Every day before leaving, you need to check the tightness of the wheel nuts. When tightening the nuts, do not increase the length of the wrench, as this may lead to stripping of the threads or twisting of the bolts. The locking ring of the removable bead is carefully placed in the groove on the rim.
When operating 300-508R car tires, you must strictly adhere to the following basic rules:
- Every day before leaving, check the tire pressure and, if necessary, bring it to normal (in the front - 8.0 kgf/cm2, in the rear - 6.7 kgf/cm2). Reducing the internal pressure in tires against the norm by 25% reduces the service life by approximately 25-40%;
- do not overload the tires. The load must be evenly distributed throughout the vehicle body.
- to transport long cargo, use spreader trailers;
- The vehicle must not be loaded beyond its rated load capacity. Overloading tires by 20% reduces their service life by approximately 40%;
- brake the car smoothly, preventing the wheels from slipping, since sliding leads to increased tread wear;
- put on snow chains only when really necessary and remove them as soon as the need has passed;
- Make sure that fuel, oil and other petroleum products do not get on the tires, as this will destroy the tires.
