The cars are equipped with a speedometer, an instrument cluster, a two-needle pressure indicator, blocks of control and warning lamps, signaling devices that indicate to the driver an extreme condition in a particular system, a set of sensors, switches and switches.
The instrument cluster (Fig. 1) includes indicators: fuel level, coolant temperature, engine oil pressure, voltage (voltmeter).
In addition, the combination includes indicators for coolant overheating, low (emergency) engine oil pressure and fuel reserve.
The connection diagram of the instrument cluster with sensors is shown in Fig. 2.
Each combination device consists of a plastic block 5 (see Fig. 1), carrying windings W1, W2, W3,
Between the windings there is an axis on which a permanent magnet and the pointer of the device are mounted. A permanent magnet 6 is pressed into one corner of the block.
In the absence of current in the circuit, the fields of these two magnets interact and place the arrow in the extreme left position.
When the current is turned on, the latter passes in series through the windings W2 and W3 and the temperature compensation resistance Rtk, which serves to stabilize the readings of the device when its temperature changes.
At the same time, current passes through winding W1 and resistance R of the sensor.
The resistance of the sensor changes: for the oil pressure and fuel level sensor by changing the position of the rheostat slider, for the temperature indicator sensor by changing the resistance of the thermistor itself.
When the sensor resistance changes, the current in winding W1 changes. Since the current in the windings and W3 does not change its value, the position of the device needle depends on the interaction of the fields and windings W2 and W3 with the field of the winding W1, which changes its value.
The resulting field of all coils sets the pointer disk magnet to the appropriate position.
Two pressure indicators installed in the UK168 indicator work in a similar way and show the air pressure in the brake system circuits.
The speedometer, made in the same style as the instrument cluster, works in conjunction with a sensor installed on the gearbox (Fig. 3).
A three-way worm wheel 3 is mounted on the secondary shaft of the gearbox, which engages with a driven worm wheel 4, which is integral with the roller.
A spur gear 1 is mounted on the shaft shank, which meshes with gear 5 of the speedometer sensor drive.
Explanation of the right side of the shield
To the right are indicator lamps on the MAZ panel, reflecting:
- Pressure drop in brake circuits;
- Battery charge level;
- Reduced oil pressure in the engine;
- Insufficient coolant level;
- Turning on the cross-axle differential lock;
- Oil filter contamination;
- Conditions of ABS on the trailer;
- Functioning of EDC;
- Starting glow plugs;
- The oil level reaches the emergency mark;
- Diagnostic mode of PBS and ABS;
- ABS control;
- Air filter contamination;
- Fluid level in the power steering system;
- Emergency temperature increase in the cooling motor system.
Decoding the MAZ Zubrenok dashboard lamps also includes the values displayed on the right side of the panel. Here are the switches for the fan in the cabin, light, differential lock and engine illumination.
On the same part there are switches for the rear fog lamp, heated mirrors, ABS, TEMPOSET, and PBS operating modes.
Below there is a rheostat for the instrument lighting, a key for turning on the alarm, a battery switch and a thermostat that controls the heater (if such a unit is installed).

Chassis (suspension, brakes, steering)
The model has an integral steering mechanism equipped with a hydraulic booster - this significantly simplifies vehicle control. The rear suspension of the model is pneumatic, while the front has small-leaf parabolic springs.

The machine is equipped with two types of cabins – short and long. The second is equipped with sleeping places and is installed on trucks for transporting goods over long distances. However, both the short and long cabs boast spaciousness.

Design and modifications
The appearance of the Belarusian truck tractor corresponds to modern automotive fashion: stylish aerodynamic body kits and linings, a wing on the roof, new modern head optics, a modernized radiator grille, and an eye-pleasing color scheme. However, the truck retained its recognizable features.
Separately, it is worth highlighting the MAZ-5440M9 modification. The modification has been produced since 2022, and has a fundamentally new cabin design - in the front part there is head optics in the form of lensed lights. In the center there is a massive black radiator grille with a silver MAZ inscription, and under it there is a logo with the image of a bison - a new recognizable sign of the Minsk Automobile Plant. A little lower, under the air intake grille, there is a step, thanks to which the driver can easily care for the massive windshield.
Malfunctions
The car is unpretentious, stylish and reliable. However, it is not without its shortcomings. So, according to reviews from drivers, almost immediately after purchasing and starting to use the car, the frame, cabin, and bumper become covered with rust, so it is recommended to tint the car. In addition, the headlights cause criticism. After a year of driving a car, they practically stop shining - the lensed optics burn out and require replacement.
Due to the fact that a number of models are equipped with foreign-made engines, transmissions, and chassis elements, as a rule, these components are practically “indestructible.”
Attention! When driving a MAZ-5440, the rear axle shock absorbers, front suspension stabilizer bushings and rear gearbox seals must be replaced.
The cost of a new truck, depending on the configuration and equipment, is from 3 to 4 million rubles. Trucks produced before 2008 will cost slightly less - depending on the technical condition, equipment, appearance and mileage, such a car can be purchased in the range from 700 thousand to 1.5 million rubles. Rebuilt 2008 models with mileage will cost drivers between 1.5 and 2 million rubles.

Maintenance
Maintenance of control and measuring instruments comes down to maintaining the instruments and sensors in good condition, for which it is necessary to wipe the instrument scales and sockets of control and signal lamp units with a dry cloth weekly, and also ensure that the protective rubber covers are securely seated on the sensor housings.
Improper fitment of the covers can lead to failure of the plug connection due to moisture and dirt.
Every 30 thousand kilometers during the next maintenance-2, it is necessary to remove the lubricant from the 2nd spur gears and the 5th speedometer (see Fig. 3) and replace it with a new one. CIATIM-201 lubricant is used to lubricate the gears.

- MAZ-544004 is equipped with an 8-cylinder power unit YaMZ-238DE. The engine displacement is 14.86 liters and the power is 330 horsepower. The engine complies with the Euro-2 environmental safety class;
- Modifications of MAZ-544008/-5440A8 are equipped with 8-cylinder V-shaped diesel engines YaMZ-7511.10 (compliance with the Euro-2 environmental safety class) and YaMZ-6581.10 (compliance with the Euro-3 environmental safety class), both engines have a power of 400 horsepower ;
- The MAZ-5440A9/-5440B9 is equipped with a 6-cylinder in-line power unit YaMZ-650.10. The engine capacity is 11.12 liters and the power is 412 horsepower. The motor complies with Euro-3 class;
