Types of trucks

The cargo transportation market is represented by a variety of semi-trailer models. But not every car is suitable for transporting lumber.

Transportation of timber.

Before you understand how many cubes of wood there are in a truck, let’s look at the brief characteristics of common models of trucks:

  1. Eurotrucks are designed to transport various types of goods. Universal vehicles can transport both furniture and, in some cases, livestock. Suitable for transporting timber.
  2. Isothermal trucks are able to maintain a set temperature in the body. They transport food products.
  3. Container ships transport containers of various formats. Timbers are hardly suitable for transportation.
  4. Construction materials are transported in dump trucks. However, transporting wood is a special case; it is not advisable to place it in a folding body.
  5. And finally, our option is timber trucks. Special equipment is designed for transportation of lumber and has all the necessary equipment for this.

Features of loading and unloading

To load timber, no matter how many cubes of timber fit into the truck, additional equipment is used - cranes.

They are needed for two reasons:

  • The load is very heavy. It would be extremely difficult for people to carefully place it in the body without damaging it.
  • Manual loading is not recommended for personnel safety reasons. The fact is that raw materials are impregnated with chemicals that can negatively affect health.

It is important to pack the goods according to their dimensions. This is necessary to maintain balance and prevent the machine from overturning.

There are a number of other rules that must be followed when loading and unloading:

  • The material should be placed near the highway, leaving an open passage for special equipment.
  • Place the load where the electrical cable is laid at least 4.5 meters above the ground.
  • Small lumber (firewood, for example) is sealed in special bags.
  • Valuable varieties of wood are packaged with waterproofing materials that protect them from rain and snow.
  • Make sure that the beams do not obscure the license plate, headlights and rear view mirrors.

Timber transportation rules

Proper transportation of wood requires compliance with a number of rules.

Here are the main ones:

  • Arrange the cargo according to processing method and length.
  • Make sure it is safely placed in the body. In this case, the driver, in order to avoid accidents, needs to get out of the cab.
  • The load is placed evenly so as not to lose balance.
  • Logs should not be knocked out of the general “order”.
  • If goods are shipped outside the country, it is important to report this to the Federal Forestry Agency.
  • Before loading a new batch, the truck must be treated with a disinfectant. This will protect the product from possible bugs and microorganisms.

Truck requirements

We noted earlier that timber can be transported in Eurotrucks.

Truck with metal stands.

However, they need to be equipped with additional equipment:

  • Metal stands. They will create sides that the flat platform of the car does not provide. This is necessary to retain the content.
  • Anti-slip combs. They are ribbed inserts that prevent timber from “moving” inside the body.
  • Shield panels. This is a kind of cabin barrier that protects the cabin with the driver from possible falling logs during loading or while descending the highway.
  • Spikes and chains on the wheels. They will protect the trailer from troubles on bad roads or icy conditions.

Documenting

It is not recommended to take risks and transport timber without documents.

The minimum package of papers that will save you from problems and unnecessary questions within the country looks like this:

  • Driving license category "E".
  • Contract for the supply of goods.
  • Invoice.
  • Waybill.
  • Registration certificate for the car.

If the path lies across the state border, several more items are added to the list:

  • International class rights.
  • Invoice.
  • Consignment note in accordance with the Convention on the International Transport of Goods.
  • Certificate of phytosanitary control.
  • A document containing a description of each unit of goods with a fixation of the exact quantity. It's called Shipping specification.

What is a Eurotruck?

This is the name given to a semi-trailer together with a tractor that has certain characteristics or parameters close to them. It is used for transporting large-sized cargo weighing up to 25 tons with a volume of up to 120 cubic meters.

The main advantage of these trucks is their versatility and flexibility in operation. One type of trailer or another can help you transport most different goods.

This is what loading a tilt Euro truck looks like:

The most common and used type is the tractor-trailer . However, the cargo compartment can also be insulated, refrigerated or open.

Are you here

Transportation of goods by road transport with a body volume from 82 to 120 m3. Refers to large-tonnage transportation, the weight of cargo of this volume is 20 - 25 tons. Traditionally, vehicles commonly referred to as “trucks” are used to transport this volume. Once upon a time, the word wagon meant a horse-drawn carriage - a cart for luggage. Today, it is a tractor-trailer with a semi-trailer or a truck with a semi-trailer and trailers. The main purpose of the truck is to transport large volumes of cargo, mainly over long distances.

Having trouble calculating the volume of cargo? Can’t find a car so as not to overpay for air transportation? Contact us! Five minutes of time, we will calculate, select and offer a mutually beneficial option!

, is the owner of its own fleet, which contains European trucks of foreign and domestic production, with a useful body volume of 82, 86, 92, 120 cubic meters. Mainly, this type of road transport is used by us for intercity transportation in the cities of Russia and the CIS. The advantage of the truck is not only in the voluminous and spacious body, but also in the speed of movement of the tractor. If you have a need to deliver cargo in the shortest possible time, the volume of which can reach 120 m3. The best solution would be to rent a truck. Well, in cases where there are no railways or airports at the destination, transportation by truck is the only alternative option to deliver such a voluminous cargo.

Truck body (trailer) volume

How many cubes are there in a truck? The question is certainly of concern to many who are faced with the inevitability of using road transport to transport cargo whose weight ranges from 12 to 22 tons, and the volume from 82 to 120 cubic meters. Note that each type of semi-trailer individually has its own overall dimensions, which certainly affects the volume of cargo transported.

Why is it necessary to know the body dimensions? Knowing the dimensional characteristics allows you to calculate the volume of the body. We offer you ready-made figures, the competence of which will allow you to choose the right truck for transportation. If you know the volume of your cargo and its weight, then it will not be difficult for you to choose the vehicle that is needed. Of course, it is worth considering the characteristics of the cargo to select the correct type of semi-trailer. Here are the main types of trailers (trucks) and their internal body volume.

Timber classification

Wood is divided into a number of categories. In general, timber is a raw material obtained by cross-cutting or longitudinal sawing of fallen trees. It differs in appearance and processing method.

There are round timber (logs, logs), lumber and blanks (trunks cut lengthwise), planed (sliced boards), peeled (spirally cut), crushed (sawdust, chips).

The goods are also divided by length. It can be short (two meters or less), medium (from two to six meters) and long (more than six meters).

What volume of dry lumber is included in a Eurotruck?

This question is asked by every third beginning wholesaler.
Indeed, when you are faced with buying lumber for the first time, you can be quite overwhelmed. Therefore, today we will look at the question of how to calculate the cost of delivering dry boards on the route Krasnoyarsk - Moscow.

But to do this you need to know how much lumber can be pushed into a truck?

At this stage the most important illusion arises.

Many of us are familiar with mathematics. And there is nothing easier than calculating the volume, knowing the length, width and height.

Typical dimensions of a Eurotruck: length 13.6 m, width 2.5 m, height 2.4 m. We multiply everything and get 82 m3.

There are trucks that are a little smaller, and some that are a little larger. But that's not the point.

When it comes to transporting lumber, the question of the maximum permitted weight of a particular vehicle comes to the fore. This is where the fairy tale turns into reality.

If someone dreamed of transporting about 80 m3 of boards in one truck, then this person will be deeply disappointed.

Depending on the type of wood and its moisture content, a Euro truck can load from 21 m3 to 40 m3 of lumber.

21 m3 is hardwood, such as oak.

40 m3 is pine. Both are dry (humidity 8-12%).

Because the maximum permitted weight of transported cargo for these types of vehicles is 20-23 tons. Next comes overload and fines from traffic police officers.

Accordingly, the denser the wood and the higher its moisture content, the heavier it is.

So exactly how much lumber can you push into a truck?

If we take it by breed, the picture will be approximately as follows:

Larch - 28-30 m3

All figures are given for lumber that has undergone forced drying in chambers. The drier the board, the lighter it is, and the more volume it can transport.

It doesn’t matter whether the board is edged or unedged. The maximum permitted volume will be included in any form.

Conclusion - it is most profitable to transport dry lumber over long distances. Transport costs per 1 m3 will be lower, and the profit will be higher.

Clarifications on the methodology for calculating the volume of wood that can be loaded into a truck. Added by me in 2022

This story happened on January 10, 2022.

Immediately after the New Year holidays, a truck arrived to load larch. The peculiarity of this case was that it was the driver’s first trip in this car (they asked to replace him). Plus, it had not traveled around Russia for more than 5 years (more and more in Europe) and, finally, this truck was not equipped with built-in scales (for internal control of cargo weight).

I needed to load 31 m3 of larch with a humidity of 12 +/-2%. With a larch density of 0.7 (700 kg/m3), the weight of my cargo was about 22 tons. More precisely: 31 m3 x 0.7 = 21.7 tons. But this is still approximately: both volume and especially density are not absolutely accurate values. Only the readings of the scales at the traffic police post can be absolutely accurate.
