Engine and transmission
The design of the engine installed on the MAZ in question is a turbocharged V-shaped diesel engine YaMZ-236 HE2 (meets EURO II standard) with six cylinders located at an angle of 90°, with a total volume of 11.15 liters.
The developed power at 2,100 rpm is 180 “horses” (or 132 kW). The torque reaches a maximum of approximately 68 kgf/m in the range of 1,250-1,450 rpm.
The six-section injection pump includes a low-pressure pump for pumping fuel, a multi-mode speed controller and an injection advance device (clutch). The type of working nozzles used is closed.
The dry type air filter has an indication of the contamination limit, and it is possible to change the filter element.
The kit includes an electric flare device (EFD). As a separate option, the manufacturer offers a special heater for starting the engine (PZD-30).
A single unit with a diesel engine is a transmission, including a dry clutch with two discs and a pneumatic booster, as well as a five-speed YaMZ-236P gearbox.
Its design includes synchronizers for forward gears, starting from II to V; their gear ratios from I to V and reverse gear (3X) are respectively:

In economical “cruising” mode, the average diesel fuel consumption reaches about 21.5 liters for every hundred kilometers traveled.
Combined cycle driving will require up to 35 liters per 100 km. The road train easily overcomes slopes up to 25% steep and fits into a general turning radius of up to 9.8 meters.
Brake systems series
The 5337 series uses multi-level braking systems driven by pneumatics.
The efficiency of their operation is ensured when moving at a speed of 60 km/h, slowing down and completely stopping a multi-ton road train - over a distance of only 36.7 m.
All equipment of combined systems has two independent circuits, separate for the front and rear pairs of wheels.
Traffic and parking safety is ensured by:
- drum-type service brakes with a width of 160 mm, a diameter of 420 mm and cam release devices. The brake chambers at the rear have additional spring accumulators;
- parking brake (activated by pneumatics in the rear wheel chambers on spring energy accumulators);
- spare brakes (combined with parking brakes). It is recommended to use when all others fail;
- Special flaps in the exhaust gas exhaust system, activated by pneumatics, provide the function of auxiliary brakes , slowing down the engine speed.
When working as part of a road train, combined options for activating trailer brakes (one- and two-wire) are provided.
There is protection against blocking in case of freezing of accumulated condensate.
Malfunctions
When operating a vehicle, the following breakdowns may occur:
- low braking efficiency;
- uneven braking of the wheels of the right and left sides;
- jamming of service or parking brakes (brake jam);
- increased travel of the parking brake handle.
An increase in braking distance can occur due to a large gap between the pads and the brake drum (TB), due to wear of the pads or insufficient output of the rod at low pressure in the pneumatic system. If such a malfunction appears after repairs associated with replacing the pads, then there is a high probability of oiling of the friction material or the inner surface of the brake pad.
In most cases, a car skidding during braking occurs due to a large difference in the strokes of the brake rods installed on one axis or the shaft getting stuck in the expansion cam bushings in the brake pad block.
Slow release most often occurs due to a broken or stuck return spring in the brake cylinder. The cause of such a defect may also be incorrect adjustment of the brake pedal. Therefore, the brake valve lever does not reach the stop. Due to the breakdown of the brake pad tension springs, spontaneous braking may occur, and a characteristic knocking sound in the wheel will be heard when driving.
When driving a truck with a trailer, there may be a delay in the latter's braking. This is due to incorrect installation of the adjusting ring in the brake valve. The same failure is typical for a stuck piston in the trailer air distributor.
It must be remembered that a breakdown in the steering will only lead to a loss of control of the car, and a vehicle failure will lead to the impossibility of stopping it, which will inevitably end in an accident.
Suspension, wheels and tires
The series uses an improved front and rear suspension system:
- The front suspension springs , combined with two telescopic shock absorbers, have a semi-elliptical shape, their rear ends slide smoothly;
- two main and two additional springs of the rear suspension are semi-elliptical in shape. The rear ends of the main springs and both ends of the additional springs are sliding.
The wheels with 8.5V-20 rims used in the MAZ-5337 truck have a discless design. Each is fastened with clamps on 6 bolts. Radial tires can be installed: 11.00R20 (300R508), I-68A, I-111A or I-111AM.
Power and consumables
The on-board voltage of 24 V is provided by the G-273V generator, the operation of which is monitored by the built-in voltage regulator Y120M.
Starting the engine is ensured by the ST103-A-0 starter, powered by two 6ST-190A (6ST-182EM) batteries.
The standard fuel tank, holding 200 liters of diesel fuel, provides an autonomous range of 450 to 900 km, depending on the load and configuration.
The total amount of oil in the engine is 25 liters of all-season M-6/10B (or M-10B in summer and M-8B in winter). Antifreeze A-40 is recommended for use in the cooling system; its total quantity is 29 liters.
