The rotation speed is carried out using a clutch, which is located on a spline on the machine. The device responsible for the mechanical control of the PTO is a hexagonal element located on the rear cover of the clutch housing.

Switching the cam mechanism sets the drive: the lever is moved forward, and the entire system begins to work; when the handle is moved to the “Off” position, the system stops working.

The lever can be in 3 positions: if you turn it clockwise, the dependent type will be installed; if you turn the handle counterclockwise, the device will switch to an independent type; the middle position is synchronous operation (the motor must be turned off before setting this position).

Sequence of work

* It is necessary, first, to change the old PISTONS with LINERS to modern ones. Although modern pistons will be a little shorter and lighter compared to the old ones from the MT3-50, however, since the space from the piston pin hole to the top of the piston matches perfectly, you can safely install it.

* Now about the cylinder head: on an old engine, the valve springs are usually very soft (they will react sluggishly), so you cannot install them on a new cylinder head. As a rule, you can buy a head completely “naked”, that is, without valve springs, studs and bushings, and therefore all the studs from the old head are twisted onto the new one. It is necessary to select stiffer springs from modern engines, which will help our timing system respond faster, and as follows from this, the maximum number of revolutions and power will increase. Don’t forget to grind the valves on the new cylinder head.

* It is also necessary to find modern injectors along with the springs, since the old injectors simply do not fit into the new head.

* After the cylinder head is ready, it’s the block’s turn. You need to pay attention to the studs, on the hardware side, the four outer studs are too long for the new head, and therefore too much unnecessary metal was removed in this area. What needs to be done: take a stud driver, or two nuts the old fashioned way, unscrew the studs we don’t need and select in their place or others of the same size, or we “sweat” less and select/order bolts. It is necessary to take into account that the studs or bolts must be made of high-quality metal, and not from “raw material”. Because the raw material will stretch out over time, weaken under the influence of loads, and in connection with this, all the potential “chances” of burning out the cylinder head gasket will appear! You should not spare money, and it is better to buy factory bolts, because it has long been known that the stingy pays twice!

* Now let’s move on to the injectors and fuel equipment. Install injectors of a modern model on the new cylinder head, and the high-pressure tubes that take fuel from the injection pump to the injectors will have to be either re-bent or different ones selected.

* Now it’s time to go to the equipment specialist, who will configure and “adjust” for us the operation of the High Pressure Fuel Pump (that is, the injection pump and all equipment) MT3-50 to the operating characteristics of the “eightieth” equipment. Well, as a matter of fact, that’s all, the engine started up with half a kick, and worked flawlessly for three seasons, until it was time to update the piston.

PTO adjustment

In order for the power take-off shaft installed on the tractor to function normally, it must be periodically inspected and adjusted. This applies not only to the MTZ-82, but to all tractors in general. The adjustment scheme looks like this:

  1. The eccentric axis is set to its original position. The applied mark should be on the right and located vertically. The position is fixed using locking plates.
  2. The rod is disconnected.
  3. The cup bolts are unscrewed to release the springs.
  4. The rear axle hatch cover is dismantled. This provides access to the head of the tension screw.
  5. The lever is moved to the neutral position and secured with a bolt. Then the locking plate is removed and the screw is tightened until it stops. After this, the bolt securing the lever can be removed.
  6. The thrust bolt is screwed into the outer cup.
  7. The lever is moved to the “on” position. Traction is installed.
  8. By adjusting the thrust, the required lever play is set.
  9. Upon completion of the adjustment, all parts are returned to their places, the rods and mounting bolts are reinforced with locknuts.

PTO malfunctions

1 The inability to switch modes is caused by wear of the jaw clutch. In this case, disconnect the gearbox from the rear axle mechanism and replace the worn parts. 2 If the shaft continues to rotate after being turned off or the stability of the PTO rotation speed in the on position is disturbed, in such cases the brake bands should be adjusted or replaced.

3 Difficult switching on or impossibility of switching on indicates a breakdown of the spring switching amplifier. Eliminate by replacing the spring.

Please note that in order to avoid injury, dismantling and installing the spring amplifier is done in strict sequence:

  • Move the power lever to a position in which the holes on the lever and the rear axle housing coincide.
  • A bolt is screwed into the holes to secure the lever.
  • The control nut 4 on the adjusting bolt 5 cup 2 , and the bolt is screwed in over the entire length of the thread, compressing the spring 1 .
  • The locking bolt securing the spring is tightened in the cup body.
  • Having fixed the spring, unscrew the adjusting bolt and remove the amplifier. Using a press, disassemble the glass and replace faulty parts.
  • Assembly and installation of the unit is carried out in the reverse order.

4 The appearance of hum and noise during PTO operation indicates wear of the bearings and parts of the planetary gearbox. To eliminate the breakdown, the gearbox is removed from the rear axle housing and the unit is completely disassembled, followed by defect detection and replacement of parts.

What is PTO?

The abbreviation PTO stands for power take-off shaft, which is installed on the MTZ-80 tractor or similar MTZ-82 to provide drive for mounted systems and units.

PTO shank

According to the installation method, the PTO can be of a side or rear type. The most optimal are rear-mounted power take-off shafts. They are installed on most wheeled vehicles and on the MTZ-80 tractor in particular. According to the principle of operation, the PTO of the MTZ-82 tractor can be of three types:

  1. Synchronous. In other words, such a shaft is called dependent. The speed of the unit directly depends on the mode of movement of the equipment. The drive to the power take-off shaft comes directly from the gearbox gearbox. The average rotation speed is 3.5 revolutions/1 meter of travel.
  2. Independent. Such a mechanism is connected directly to the MTZ-82 engine. Its rotation frequency depends on the engine flywheel with which the tractor is equipped. In addition, whether the clutch is on or off plays a role. For MTZ-80, the shaft rotation speed is 540 or 1000 rpm.
  3. Combined. Such a PTO can operate in the two modes listed above.

The power take-off gearbox is designed to transfer power from the GAZ-53A engine to the rear axle of the vehicle when the crane is moving or to the mechanisms of the rotating part of the crane during its operation. Switching is done by shifting the gear using a lever installed in the crane cabin.

The power take-off gearbox (Fig. 34) is installed on the vehicle chassis and, by switching the gear of the carriage, transmits movement to the mechanisms of the turning part or the rear axle of the vehicle. The power take-off gearbox is controlled by a lever installed in the driver's cab.

The power take-off gearbox provides independent drive of the hydraulic pump of the loading equipment. The transmission is equipped with a unified hydromechanical gearbox, combining in one unit a torque converter and a mechanical gearbox with hydraulic gear engagement, which has a coaxial arrangement of the output shaft to drive the axles.  

The power take-off gearbox transmits rotation to the winch shaft through a claw coupling and a gear pair, which is closed in the winch front post box. A movable counterweight is installed directly on the pipelayer frame on the side opposite the boom.

The power take-off gearbox is mounted on an adapter plate, which is attached to the rear of the tractor. The gearbox has a cam-type device that provides the power stroke and neutral position necessary to stop the cutting chains without turning off the engine. At the ends of the output shaft of the power take-off gearbox, sprockets are mounted on splines that transmit movement to the cutting chains.

A separately located power take-off gearbox, mounted in housing 5 (Fig. 71), closed with a cover 7, is usually bolted to a special plate 1 of the supporting metal structure of the tractor frame.  

Two gear hydraulic pumps are driven from the power take-off gearbox. One pump, through a three-spool distributor, serves a volumetric hydraulic drive with the following power elements: hydraulic cylinders for lifting the elevator, a hydraulic cylinder for turning the dump conveyor and an axial plunger hydraulic motor for the creeper.
