How does the power take-off shaft work on a walk-behind tractor?

The Belarus MTZ 09N walk-behind tractor is a multifunctional reversible walk-behind tractor with a splined power take-off shaft that transmits torque from the HONDA GX 270 engine (power 9 hp) to the wheels to create traction and to working attachments.

Used for a long time on large areas.

This is a power wheeled vehicle with a 2*2 road formula, called a “single-axle tractor”. Designed for operation with a trailed rotary cultivator; it is not used in the “milling cultivator” mode. Relative to the wheel axle, the center of gravity and the engine are shifted forward for this reason. The MTZ 09N walk-behind tractor with additional attachments is used as a wheeled plow, like many heavy walk-behind tractors. This is the basic equipment.

Due to the reversible design and splined PTO in the walk-behind tractor, different methods of installing additional equipment are acceptable. Equipping with additional trailed or mounted equipment guarantees year-round performance of municipal, agricultural, and agrotechnical work.

Independent and synchronous PTO drives "MTZ-82"

So, the design of the PTO of the MTZ-82 tractor is the same as that of the MTZ-80. The rear power take-off shaft of the MTZ-82 tractor is of a combined type. This means that the PTO can be equipped with both independent and dependent, that is, synchronous, drive. With an independent drive, the shaft rotation speed is determined by the rotation speed of the diesel engine, and with a dependent (synchronous) drive, it is determined by the speed of the tractor.

READ Motor Power For Circular Saw

The independent PTO drive is connected directly to the engine flywheel. This ensures that the power take-off shaft rotates at a speed independent of the tractor speed. It will not affect the purity of rotation of the PTO and the engaged or disengaged clutch. The drive is independent - two-speed. It has two rotation speeds (540 or 1000 rpm), with a power unit speed of 2100 rpm.

The synchronous PTO drive is connected directly to the drive gear of the 2nd stage of the MTZ-82 gearbox gearbox. Therefore, the rotation speed of the power take-off shaft is tied to the speed of the tractor and is 3.5 revolutions for every meter of distance traveled by the tractor.

The non-synchronous type should be started only when the engine is not running, or at the very minimum crankshaft speed. Synchronous - only on a tractor that is stopped.

The rotation speed of the power take-off shaft is standardized in certain values (540, 1000 rpm) specifically for correct operation with mounted and trailed equipment. Because otherwise, working on an additional device at an inappropriate speed can lead to either insufficient performance or damage to it.

When the independent drive is turned on, rotation from the internal drive shaft, which is located inside the secondary shaft of the gearbox, is transmitted through the shift clutch to the ring gear shaft of the PTO planetary gearbox.

When the synchronous drive is engaged, the clutch moves forward, disengaging from the internal shaft of the independent drive and connecting to the hub splines of the 2nd stage gearbox drive gear.

The mechanism required to drive the hitch into motion

Power take-off shafts (PTO) of the MTZ-82 tractor are devices designed to transfer rotational energy from the engine to the working parts of mobile or stationary machines mounted with the tractor; attachments, active trailers and other mechanisms. Like most modern tractors, MTZ-82 is equipped with a rear power take-off shaft and a rear three-point hitch. Since it is much less common to find equipment whose operation requires constant supervision of the operator and, accordingly, the front PTO.

It’s worth noting right away: the MTZ-82 power take-off shaft is similar to the one installed on the MTZ-80. There are two types of loads when operating the power take-off shaft:

  • The PTO drives any mechanical components of a mounted or trailed device either directly or through transmission devices (gearboxes, cardans, V-belt drives). This is the most common type of PTO use, in which the shaft is fully loaded.
  • The PTO operates the hydraulic system of the mounted or towed device. This type of PTO use is used only for a small range of special mechanisms and devices equipped with their own hydraulic system. The PTO then only acts on the hydraulic pump.

Description

The production of Belarus walk-behind tractors began in 1978 with the MTZ-05 model. Since then, interest in these units has not waned, because their main advantage is reliability and excellent technical characteristics. The ability to be aggregated with any type of attachment makes MTZ walk-behind tractors even more functional and in demand in small and medium-sized agriculture. Some of the hitch requires some work, but the owners do not consider this a problem.

Attractive in appearance and simple inside, the MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor is still in use today and is popular in the secondary market.

Below is a diagram that clearly demonstrates the structure of the walk-behind tractor and the location of all components

Before you begin repairing any unit or part, you must familiarize yourself with the presented diagram. This will help not only to understand where the necessary mechanisms are located, but also to establish the relationship between them. Refinement of the walk-behind tractor and its repair will be carried out much faster and more efficiently.

Engine

Early models were equipped with domestically produced engines UD-15 and UD-25. But as the device improved and new models were released, walk-behind tractors with a Japanese-made Honda engine installed on them became widespread. They were distinguished by increased service life and operational reliability.

However, the cost of such units was also high, therefore, in order to reduce the cost of products, motors from the Chinese manufacturer Lifan began to be installed in production. The quality was slightly inferior to the Japanese Honda, but in general, they were considered an excellent alternative. Many owners decided to modernize their unit and did not regret it. It is safe to say that the use of imported motors will only improve the performance of the unit.

The problems and solutions described below were made based on feedback from owners.

Difficulty starting the engine

Typically, this problem arose for the following reasons:

  • Difficult fuel supply and, as a result, its shortage. The first thing to do is check the amount of fuel in the tank. If everything is in order and there is fuel, clean the air and fuel filters. Make sure that the connection between the carburetor and the head is tight enough. Check the fuel pump and its functionality.
  • There may be problems with the ignition system. Check the contact of the magneto with the spark plugs. The magneto must be working and produce a spark. If the integrity of the wires or the insulation of the electrodes is broken, or there is some kind of gap between them, then problems will arise. You can try starting the engine by quickly and sharply pressing the pedal. Make sure the accelerator is working.

How to make a power take-off shaft for a walk-behind tractor

There are different PTO options. Independent, as the name implies, does not depend on the speed of the device. taken directly from the engine through a planetary gear, bypassing the gearbox. In mechanics, this is called differential - force distribution. It is difficult to make such a device yourself in the garage.

The simplest DIY option is a synchronous PTO device. In this case, it is driven by the secondary shaft of the gearbox, and its speed varies depending on the selected speed. As soon as you increase or decrease the gear, the PTO rotation speed will also change. The synchronous PTO also depends on the operation of the clutch: when the lever is pressed, it disengages.

We measure the PTO speed on a diesel walk-behind tractor.

The scheme is quite simple: the secondary shaft of the gearbox is connected using a V-belt to the pulley of the drive mechanism, to which the active units will be connected. The cardan transmission to the driven pulley can be installed using parts from old mechanisms.

The drive belt is not attached to the shaft itself, but only to a small pulley, while the driven belt must be of a larger diameter to increase torque and reduce rotation speed.

If you have made a walk-behind tractor for yourself, then equipping it with a PTO is not difficult. When buying a new device, you should immediately choose something that you won’t have to redo later.

Motoblocks with a power take-off shaft (abbr. PTO) are universal self-propelled devices capable of performing a wide range of tasks. They have a special technical design that allows the installation of various types of attachments, including a mower, seeder, active cutter, potato digger, snow blower, and sweeper.

Walk-behind tractors with a PTO, in contrast to passive analogues, perform work better, and in terms of efficiency they are practically not inferior to a small-sized tractor, but are much cheaper in price. In addition, they have less weight, a more compact design and do not require a large room for storage.

You will learn how to make a power take-off shaft in the next video.

Increasing the speed of Belarus

To get maximum efficiency from the purchased MTZ walk-behind tractor, many owners are interested in the possibility of increasing the speed of the unit. Experts recommend replacing the standard gears with accelerated gears. The difference is in the number of teeth. A regular gear has 61 teeth, and the axle shaft has 12. The accelerated gear is slightly different and has 55 teeth, and the axle shaft has 15.

The principle of operation is to increase the speed of rotational movements of the axle shaft, and, consequently, the entire unit as a whole. Moreover, the engine speed does not change. For example, in 4th gear after replacement, the speed will increase from 9 km/h to 15 km/h.

One simple but effective way to increase the speed of the MTZ walk-behind tractor is to replace the wheels with larger diameter ones. The explanation is simple - the increased wheel area covers a larger area.

  • The steering column is equipped with two position switches for comfortable control.

Carrying out running-in of MTZ

It is necessary to carry out a break-in after purchasing a new walk-behind tractor before putting it into operation. The importance of break-in is to allow the parts to break in. Since the walk-behind tractor that comes off the assembly line is not run-in in production, all parts may not fit tightly due to possible roughness on the surface. Therefore, during the running-in of the MTZ, no attachments are used, and the unit is started only at half power. You should not operate it at maximum speed.

The manufacturer recommends running-in for 10-15 hours.

The engine starts and at first it just runs, then gradually the load needs to be added. Do not use a heavy hitch. All you need to do is connect the trailer without any load and go for a ride with it.

Setting up the MTZ walk-behind tractor

If you want to get maximum efficiency when working with the MTZ walk-behind tractor, then before starting work you need to configure it. It is most advisable to carry out adjustments after inactivity or long-term storage. Despite the fact that new walk-behind tractors are configured directly in production, after purchase it is necessary to additionally inspect and check all systems and, in particular, engine operation.

Motor tuning sequence:

  1. Adjust the fuel fluid as the control screws may move.
  2. Check the distance between the valves and do what is recommended. This allows you to control the amount of fuel liquid entering the carburetor.
  3. Using idle speed, adjust the carburetor. Then on minimum and maximum gas.
  4. Set the pneumatic tires to the same atmospheric pressure. The recommended level is 2 atmospheres. If this is not done, the unit will have an uneven ride, it will be difficult to control and turn to the side.

Carrying out maintenance of MTZ walk-behind tractors

Despite the fact that MTZ walk-behind tractors are reliable and have a solid design, to maintain them in good technical condition it is necessary to regularly carry out special maintenance, which consists of the following actions:

  • Clean after use. The best way to remove stuck dirt is with water and a brush. This will help avoid corrosion, which forms due to constant contact with moisture.
  • Quite often, the walk-behind tractor gets scratched and the paint layer is damaged. This is an additional factor for the occurrence of corrosion. If a violation of the integrity of the paintwork is detected, it is necessary to restore it as quickly as possible.
  • The oil level is checked immediately before starting operation, every time. If the engine is allowed to operate without lubrication, the parts will be subject to increased wear, which will lead to rapid breakdowns. To avoid friction on dry shift levers, use Litol or Solidol.

Operating rules for MTZ

  • After starting the engine, the pedal slowly rises to a horizontal position.
  • Before using attachments, you must check that the latches are secure. This will help to avoid sudden disconnection of the hitch from the MTZ walk-behind tractor, and, consequently, injury to the operator. The fasteners must be in good working order and well tightened, ensuring engagement with the unit.
  • You cannot engage reverse gear until the car comes to a complete stop when moving forward.

Features of the lubrication system

To prevent breakdowns and premature failure of the power unit, it is necessary to pay special attention to lubrication, thanks to which the parts will work smoothly and continuously. The crankcase holds 0.6 cubic dm of lubricant, which is the 10W-30 series.

To avoid using a bad mixture, try to purchase oils from trusted brands that have been on the market for a long time and have proven themselves to be the best.

The oil is changed according to the schedule recommended in the operating instructions. As a rule, the first replacement is performed after 25 hours of operation, after the MTZ walk-behind tractor has been run-in. Stick to your oil change plan to avoid breakdowns.

In order to extract the used oil, you need to warm up the engine for some time. Then the lubricant becomes viscous and flows out easily.

By following the following algorithm of actions, you can perform the replacement quickly:

  1. Unscrew the oil tank cap.
  2. Prepare a container for used oil.
  3. Remove the plug from the tank so that it can be drained.
  4. Leave in this position for some time. Usually 15-20 minutes is enough.
  5. Put the plug back.
  6. Oil must be filled into the tank to the appropriate level.
  7. Screw on the tank cap.

Engine

The Belarus MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor can be equipped with small-displacement engines UD-15, UD-25 and their modifications. Motors of this type are designed based on the MEMZ-966 Zaporozhets model. The UD-15 is a single-cylinder engine, and the UD-25 is available with two cylinders. Depending on the produced engine configuration, they may have different names UD-15G, UD-25G, UD-25S.

Engine UD 15

Engine UD 25

The walk-behind tractor can be equipped with Japanese Honda and Lifan engines, as well as Chinese Lianlong engines, which are excellent in terms of technical characteristics. The difference is characterized by the build quality and the number of engine hours that are allocated for the operation of each motor. The indicators from the manufacturer Honda stand out especially.

Engine Lifan 6.5

Engine Honda GX200

Gasoline with any octane number is suitable as fuel, the main thing is that it is clean and without impurities. SAE 30 seasonal oil is suitable as a lubricant. Alternatively, you can purchase 5w30 or 10w30. In winter, it is advisable to use special synthetic oil 0w40.

Adjustment of valves

It is also necessary to check the gap between the valves regularly, as after a certain period the gap may increase, and this leads to uneven operation of the engine and insufficient power. The optimal gap is considered to be from 0.1 to 0.15 mm.

Carburetor adjustment

If the walk-behind tractor does not maintain the accumulated speed, then this indicates the need for regulatory manipulations. Typically, adjustments are carried out before work at the beginning of the season. After a long period of inactivity, equipment requires careful maintenance, as well as after the unit has been used at maximum power for a long time. Pre-warm the engine and begin adjusting the carburetor:

  • Screw in the low and maximum throttle screws completely, and then loosen one and a half turns.
  • Start the engine and leave for 10 minutes.
  • Set the power plant control lever to the minimum division. Make sure that the engine does not stall.
  • At idle, adjust the idle speed using the throttle valve screw.
  • Check the tightening of the screw, where if excessive force is applied, the mixture becomes richer, and if loosened, the amount of air increases.

The idle screw allows you to adjust the maximum idle speed. Adjust in the same way at low speeds. The use of various options allows you to determine the angle at which the damper is closed.

Move the lever to the “gas” position. Monitor the operation of the engine; if it is also unstable, then adjust the screw to ideal condition. But it is important to know that the number of revolutions should not exceed 2.5.

Fuel consumption

Belarus 05 is equipped with a fuel tank with a capacity of 5 liters. The average fuel consumption for this model is 340-360 g/kW.

Clutch

Particular attention is paid to the clutch, as it plays an important role in the operation of the engine. Setup requires attention and patience. There are such malfunctions that require repair:

  • The lever is fully depressed, and the walk-behind tractor makes attempts to move. Try tightening the adjustment screw.
  • If the lever is lowered and the walk-behind tractor is slipping, then adjust the tightening degree of the adjusting screw.

Possible clutch malfunctions

  • When the lever is fully depressed, the MTZ-05 tries to move. This means that he is being led. In this situation, tighten the adjusting screw slightly.
  • When the clutch is lowered, the walk-behind tractor slips, that is, it either does not produce the necessary power or stops altogether. In this case, the adjusting screw should be slightly tightened.

Transmission

In order to avoid gearbox breakdowns, it is necessary to monitor the quality of the oil being poured and replace it regularly. This is done in order to prevent the gearbox from jamming, which can occur due to poor quality lubricant. It is best to fill transmission lubricants.

The oil is changed every 100 hours, but under heavy load after 50 hours.

Before each use of the walk-behind tractor, be sure to check the oil level. As a rule, a dipstick is used to measure the level, which is dropped dry into the tank. And after extraction, a decision is made about the need to top up.

Electric starter

Many owners of MTZ-05 install an electric starter on it instead of the factory one. This makes the process of putting the engine into operation much easier. Because at sub-zero temperatures it often refuses to start.

In order to replace the electric starter, you must first install a battery, since without it the electric starter will not work.

Another important addition to the MTZ is the headlight. It allows you to carry out work even at dusk. It's not included as standard, but it works great with a battery.
