The complete MAZ braking system is a combination of several different braking systems at once - working, spare, parking and auxiliary. You can also include additional brake devices here, through which semi-trailer brakes are connected to it.

The system is controlled using the foot brake pedal and MAZ PGU. The most common option for MAZ cars is a drum-type friction system, where braking is carried out due to the friction force between the brake pads on a stationary caliper and the brake drum, which rotates with the wheel.

The task of this system is to act through a pneumatic drive of mechanisms on all wheels of the car, but at the same time, the braking of the rear and front wheels is separate. It is activated by a foot pedal and is used to reduce speed (braking) until it comes to a complete stop.

Its task is to influence the brake mechanism of the rear axle. The main element of the system is brake chambers with spring energy accumulators. It is used in case of failures of the working system, you can see it in the diagram of the brake system; a working part of the working system, or the entire parking system, can be used as a spare system.


Parking

This MAZ braking system is needed to hold the car in place during parking - even the absolute horizontalness of the surface does not exclude the possibility of spontaneous movement. Therefore, using the parking brake is advisable not only on slopes, but during any installation. In some MAZ models, both the parking and spare brake systems ensure the operation of the braking mechanisms not only of the rear axle, but also of the middle axle.

This system is sometimes called an engine brake or retarder, and its task is to influence the car's transmission. This effect is achieved by creating back pressure in the gas exhaust system using a pneumatically driven throttle valve. When turning the valve, the fuel supply automatically stops. Most often, the auxiliary braking system is used during long descents.

If the car trailer is equipped with brake elements with a pneumatic drive, then the MAZ brake system can be connected to it without any problems, which ensures the operation of the trailer brakes.

    MAZ differential - device, purpose and adjustment

    The MAZ differential is installed in the drive shafts of the truck and is designed to distribute torque evenly between the wheels and improve the operating conditions of the drive axles Also:

    • Provides wheel rotation at different frequencies
    • Prevents the MAZ vehicle from tipping over on turns or wheels slipping when driving on uneven roads and when maneuvering
    • With its help, the car's handling becomes much better;

    What needs to be regulated

    First of all, the MAZ center differential housing must be adjusted . In this case, check the preload - it is because of the constriction that the spare parts overheat and immediately fly into the trash

    Next we take on the adjustment of the center differential housing and here we also control the tightening. The “healthy” moment is 15 kgf/m. The gap should be zero in the bearings, and the bolts should be tightened to 25 kgf/m.

    Adjust the center differential on the assembled gearbox, having previously measured the gap between the ends of the coupling and the cup of the part. The next step is to unscrew the bolts and remove the pneumatic cylinder with the piston and unscrew the fork rod nut with a special wrench. Next, set the gap to 10.5mm and tighten the connections. Reinstall the cylinder. If you adjust the bearings, you will have to disassemble the center differential.

    What breaks in the MAZ differential

    Is the locking mechanism screwed up? Check the electromechanical clutch drive.

    Do you hear a strange noise when turning? Parts of the center differential are worn out - the spherical surface of the housing has become unusable or the axle drive gears have jammed

    Increased imbalance of the MAZ center differential manifests itself through vibration in the body.

    Having trouble changing gears? Then run and look at the couplings. The malfunction occurs when the hub and housing splines jam.

    When assembling the differential, lubricate the metal elements with a thin layer of oil - this will extend its life, free yourself from another headache and prevent unnecessary costs.

    By the way, the fluid in the clutch loses its useful properties over time and therefore shocks appear when the wheels are fully turned - just replace the fluid or be prepared for the clutches to squeeze out the retaining ring.

    The MAZ 4370 truck is a medium-tonnage low-loader cargo truck, developed and produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant. Cars of the MCV category belong to cargo vehicles with a permissible minimum weight of 3.5 tons (class N2). The unofficial nickname of the MAZ 4370 became “Zubrenok”, and under this name the truck went down in history. Production of the model started in mid-1999, and during production the base model was repeatedly modernized.

    MAZ 4370 Zubrenok has many advantages, the key ones for buyers are:

    In 1999, the Minsk Automobile Plant offered the consumer a new product - MAZ-4370. This machine was both unexpected, given the usual nomenclature of the enterprise, and long-awaited, given the fact that Minsk residents had been working towards its creation for almost a decade. The fact is that the 4370 is a low-loader, medium-tonnage flatbed truck, that is, a representative of a category that had not been dealt with in Minsk until that time, but plans had been hatched for a long time to break into this market segment...

    A special machine and its non-standard gearbox

    Since its inception, MAZ has been producing heavy trucks - vehicles with a carrying capacity of 8 tons or more. The first “deviation” from the standard occurred in the early 1990s, when a branch of the AMAZ plant opened, where they began making buses. The second surprise was the low loaders, designed to carry 4500 kg. This line immediately proved its worth and advantages over all domestic and imported analogues.

    Therefore, it is not surprising that subsequently the basic model received several modifications, and within each version there may also be differences in performance characteristics. And if more noticeable variability can be seen when replacing the power unit, then minor optimization was achieved by installing other smaller components, in particular, by tuning the central gearbox of the drive axle.

    The MAZ 4370 cargo Zubrenok was produced in four modifications, which differed in power plants. Initially, the Belarusian MMZ D-245 engine was installed on the truck. The engine did not meet European environmental standards, so it needed improvement. Quite quickly it was replaced with an improved version D-245.30, which already complied with the Euro-2 standard. A few years later, the engine was further refined to the Euro-3 standard. In addition to Minsk engines, the MAZ 4370 was equipped with the German Deutz BF4M 1013FC engine, which meets Euro-3. But the latest modifications can be found relatively rarely in Russia.

    Engine MAZ 4370 D-245

    The main engine for the MAZ 4370 was the Belarusian D-245. This is a turbocharged diesel engine, which has appeared on many models of tractors and special equipment and has proven itself in both operation and maintenance. The 4.75-liter engine has 1.5 thousand revolutions per minute and generates 157 hp. This allows it to be high-torque on the one hand, and on the other hand have good fuel efficiency: in the combined cycle, consumption per “hundred” reaches 17 liters.

    An alternative propulsion system was the Deutz BF4M 1013FC - a four-stroke diesel engine with four cylinders, liquid-cooled, a turbocharger and direct fuel injection. The valves are located on top. Starter 12V/24V. If we compare the Deutz BF4M 1013FC with the D-245, then the technical characteristics are approximately the same. But Zubrenok with Deutz BF4M 1013FC works much quieter.

    Engine operating parameters

    The first model of MAZ-4370 was released quite a long time ago, but the manufacturer carried out timely modernization of power plants. That is why the type of truck in question was equipped with different engines at different periods of time:

    • MMZ D-245-540 – meeting the EURO-1 standard, equipped with a ZIL-659D five-speed gearbox;
    • MMZ D-245 E2 – meeting the EURO-2 standard, used in conjunction with the SAAZ-3206 manual transmission;
    • MMZ D-245 E3 – corresponding to the EURO-3 standard, equipped with a SAAZ-3206 gearbox;
    • DEUTZ BF 4M 1013FC is an imported engine of EURO-3 standard. Together with it, a foreign-made ZF S5-42 manual transmission was used.

    The diesel engine from a foreign manufacturer has more power, but overall the MMZ D-245.30 E3 is not inferior to it. DEUTZ BF 4M1013FC has the following operating parameters:

    • overall dimensions : length – 479 mm, width – 728 mm, height – 1151 mm;
    • engine weight without lubricant and other filling fluids – 560 kg;
    • crankshaft rotation speed – 1,500 rpm;
    • fuel consumption at: maximum possible load (g/kW×h) – 205, minimum load (g/kW×h) – 209;
    • power – 170 l. With.;

    The volume of the engine combustion chamber is 4.8 liters. There are many different additional options that make the operation of the power plant quieter and more uniform: this is an electronic speed controller, supercharging, and an improved cooling system.

    The remaining engines that the MAZ 4370 was previously equipped with have less outstanding performance parameters. Also, MMZ D-245-540 and MMZ-245 E2 do not meet modern environmental requirements.

    Description of the vehicle's chassis

    MAZ-4370 vehicles have a dependent front spring suspension, equipped with hydraulic shock absorbers with stabilizers.

    The front axle is an I-beam with steering wheels mounted on it. The rear suspension of the car is a spring design. Longitudinal semi-elliptical springs are mounted here in the form of a set of steel strips.

    The suspension is characterized as harsh, but simple and reliable. The trouble-free service life is about 300,000 km.

    A drum brake system is installed on all wheels. To control the brakes, a dual-circuit pneumatic-hydraulic drive with independent circuits of the rear and front pairs of wheels is used.

    The rear drums are equipped with a battery-controlled parking brake.

    The machine is equipped with R17.5” or R20” steel rims. Tire size – 235/75R17.5.

    Transmission

    All modifications of the car are equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions from SAAZ (Saransk Aggregate Plant), ZF, which are assembled mainly in Spanish factories or Chinese Fast Gear. Torque from the engine to the transmission elements is transmitted through a single-plate friction dry clutch with a disc diameter of 340 or 360 mm. The rear drive axle with a central bevel gear with hypoid displacement is equipped with a cross-axle differential with locking.

    Dynamic characteristics

    • The maximum speed of the car declared by the manufacturer is 85 km/h;
    • The smallest turning radius along the track axis of the front outer wheel for a car with a wheelbase of 3700 mm is 6.9 m;
    • The minimum overall turning radius for a car with a wheelbase of 3700 mm is 7.65 m;

    Electrical equipment

    The vehicle is equipped with a 24 V power supply system. The power sources are two 6-ST-110 type batteries and an alternating current generator type 3232.3771.10 with a built-in integrated voltage regulator. To start the engine, an ST-230R starter with an electromagnetic switching mechanism is used.

    Refill tanks

    Despite the class of the truck, its refueling capacities are relatively small:

    • engine lubrication system (MMZ-245) – 14.8 l;
    • cooling system (MMZ-245) – 21.9 l;
    • SAAZ-3206 gearbox lubrication system – 4.5 l;
    • final drive housing (middle and rear axles) – 13 l (both);
    • power steering system - 6.5 l;
    • hydraulic platform lifting system – 65 l;
    • washer reservoir – 10 l;
    • cabin hydraulic lift – 0.75 l;
    • box housing (transfer case) – 4.5 l;
    • usable volume of the fuel tank is 143 l.

    Gearbox MAZ 4370

    The truck was produced with three different transmissions:

    1. ZIL-695D (Saransk, Russia) - the gearbox was installed in tandem with the D-245 engine on MAZ 437040;
    2. SAAZ-3206 - gearboxes were paired with improved D-245 engines (Euro-2 and Euro-2) on modifications MAZ 43704 and MAZ 437043, respectively;
    3. ZF S5-42 (Spain) - gearboxes were installed on modifications of the MAZ 437030, equipped with Deuts.

    All available transmissions are five-speed manual. By design they are dry, single-disc friction. The clutch disc size can be 340 or 360 mm in diameter. A bevel gearbox and a cross-axle differential with locking are installed on the driving rear axle.

    In addition to native gearboxes, which are not particularly reliable, Chinese-assembled gearboxes are offered for the MAZ 4370, for example 6J60T and 6J70T. They are designed by the American company Eaton and manufactured in China under contract. Unlike native gearboxes, Chinese ones have six speeds.

    No matter how reliable a machine or its individual system may be initially, wear, aging (fatigue) of materials, mechanical damage and other troubles are inevitable during operation. And the transmission, by definition, is one of the most vulnerable parts of the structure, because in addition to workloads, it has to experience corrosive influences from the outside, plus there is a high risk of accidental impacts. To extend the life of the central gearbox, you should follow a couple of simple rules:

    1. Add and change lubricant in a timely manner
    2. Periodically inspect parts, including seals and flanges, for integrity.
    3. Regularly check the tightness of the bolts
    4. Immediately eliminate detected faults and shortcomings

    This will not make the CR eternal, but it will serve much longer. Although the simplicity of the unit’s design allows many repairs and maintenance work to be carried out independently, it is highly desirable that serious repairs be carried out only by qualified craftsmen. And if it is necessary to replace individual parts or the gearbox assembly, then you need to use only certified spare parts from trusted manufacturers and suppliers.

    In the MAZ 4370, the braking system is implemented independently for the front and rear axles. It is pneumatic and consists of the following components:

    • compressor;
    • receivers (compressed air cylinders);
    • pneumatic drives;

    How to remove a brake drum

In this case, it is necessary to dismantle the drum and replace the pads. The dismantling work is not difficult, but it will require some physical effort, because... the parts are heavy.

    To remove the brake drum, do the following:

    • jack up the wheel;
    • unscrew the nuts and remove it;
    • screw 3 M10 bolts into the holes on the drum cover and press it out;
    • remove the part from the hub.

    Chassis and suspension

    The chassis and suspension of the MAZ 4370 deserve praise. It is largely due to the excellent quality of Zubrenok’s design and suspension assembly that it has become so widely used.     History of creation

    The Minsk Automobile Plant developed the concept of the future MAZ 4370 in cooperation with the Gorky Automobile Plant. The first conceptual low-frame, medium-tonnage trucks were designed by enterprise engineers in the 90s. But after the collapse of the USSR, MAZ decided to refuse cooperation with the Russian automobile plant, since for a number of reasons it became difficult to interact with representatives of another state. In this regard, Minsk decided to stop supplies for other trucks, in particular for MAZ 5336, cabs produced by GAZ.

    Without abandoning the idea of ​​​​creating a medium-tonnage truck, Mazov engineers decided to take the MAN L 2000, assembled in Germany, as a prototype. Having adjusted a number of functions and increased the carrying capacity, the Minsk Automobile Plant created the MAZ 4370 Zubrenok exactly in the form in which it rolled off the assembly line in 1999.

    Entering the Russian market

    At the time the new product appeared on the Russian truck market, there were two main competitors in this class - GAZ 3310 and ZIL 5301. The Belarusian medium-duty truck outperformed them in several ways. Firstly, the cabin was more spacious and comfortable. Secondly, the carrying capacity of the new product was higher, which was perhaps the most powerful argument in its favor, all other things being equal. For a long time, the MAZ 4370 truck simply had no competitors in the domestic car market. Zubrenok is in high demand to this day.

    In 2007, the Kama Automobile Plant launched onto the market a direct competitor to the Zubrenok MAZ 4370 - KamAZ 4308, which was popularly nicknamed “Kamazenok”. Not wanting to give up their position, the automaker worked on modernizing their truck. In 2010, the manufacturer introduced the second generation of Zubrenok. The updated truck received the MAZ 4371 index. It has a redesigned cabin, which has become even more comfortable to meet the requirements of the time. Also, the MAZ 4371 Zubrenok-2 was equipped with more environmentally friendly diesel engines.

    Features and operation

    A special feature of the MAZ-4370 is its rather comfortable all-metal cabin. It can be either two- or three-seater. To access the elements of the power plant, it tilts forward using a hydraulic lift. The cabin has a flat floor, making it comfortable and spacious. An electronically controlled car heater is installed in the cabin for heating. The first models of the machine were equipped with rather noisy engines, which were modifications of the D-240 series tractor engines. For the MAZ-4370, a turbocharged engine and an intercooler were developed. Subsequently, through modifications it was possible to bring the Minsk engines into compliance with environmental standards according to EURO-3. All models currently produced comply with EURO-3 and EURO-4 standards. By installing Common Rail electronic control on MMZ engines, it was possible to achieve more economical and smooth operation. For modifications designed to work with a trailer, as a rule, they install reliable and durable SAAZ-433420 gearboxes made in Russia. However, untimely maintenance and oil changes can significantly reduce the trouble-free life of the unit. As for the ZF gearbox, it is noted for its high operational reliability, as well as smoother gear shifting. The chassis of the Zubrenok also does not cause any particular complaints. Even if the springs fail, their cost is several times less compared to foreign analogues. The first MAZ-4370 models were equipped with Continental tires, but later they were replaced with Ya478 from the Yaroslavl plant. According to many experts, Yaroslavl tires are seriously inferior in quality to their foreign counterparts. The low service life of the rear axle, which is about 10,000 km, is also a source of criticism, which is clearly not enough for a car of this class.
