Truck cranes are self-propelled lifting equipment designed for lifting and moving loads. The machines combine excellent maneuverability, significant movement speed and high load capacity. Truck cranes are based on the chassis of an existing fleet of trucks or special off-road chassis.

Truck cranes are used in construction, utilities, agriculture and manufacturing industries to perform loading and unloading of the following jobs:

  • construction of buildings and structures;

  • construction of bridges and viaducts;
  • construction of roads and sidewalks;

It is possible to distinguish types of truck cranes based on one more characteristic - the type of working equipment. Today, machines with removable equipment are most widespread: by changing the working unit, you can perform a wider range of tasks using the same truck crane. Truck cranes are equipped with:

  • grab.

All truck cranes are mobile. This means that the machine moves independently to the work site. When choosing a crane, you should focus on the following characteristics:

  • permissible lifting weight;
  • lifting height, depending on the type and length of the boom;
  • boom radius, which is the distance from the load to the axis of the crane’s center of gravity;
  • speed of lifting or lowering loads—vertical movement of loads per unit of time (meter/min);
  • load moment, which is determined by multiplying the boom length by the load capacity.

Other important indicators include: chassis transport speed, maximum power load, minimum turning radius, vehicle engine power and crane power plant.

Dimensions affect maneuverability when working in cramped conditions.

How to choose the right truck crane?

The ability to perform operations to move goods, the profitability of the work, and the level of safety depend on how correctly the truck crane is selected. The main task is to find a middle ground here. In the absence of knowledge in matters of construction technology and installation of heavy structures, it is necessary to clearly understand the following points:

  • Specifics of the cargo. Fragile materials that need to be handled carefully are best transported using new, smooth-feeding equipment.
  • Required load capacity, delivery height. The accuracy of choosing these parameters for the crane used leads to lower material costs.
  • Landscape specificity. In mountainous or hilly areas with large slopes, it is necessary to use truck cranes with increased stability.
  • Freedom of maneuver on site. In conditions of limited space, truck cranes with a rotating front and rear axle are ideal.
  • Construction site location. Some models are adapted to work only with a developed structure of access roads, others - off-road.

Classification

Many types of special equipment are produced, differing in load capacity, boom reach, drive type and other indicators.

According to their lifting capacity, cranes are:

  • small - up to 8 tons;
  • medium - up to 50 tons;
  • heavy - 50-100 tons;
  • super heavy - over 100 tons.

Small cranes are compact and maneuverable. They are characterized by economical fuel consumption. They can work in cramped conditions of production sites, warehouses and courtyards. The most popular cranes are of medium lifting capacity. They are used on construction sites, in the public utilities sector, and in logistics companies.

Heavy and super-heavy equipment works in the laying of utilities, construction of bridges, energy facilities, and in the oil and gas sector.

By boom length

The lifting capacity of a truck crane usually varies depending on the boom radius:

  • up to 14 m - corresponds to a load capacity of up to 14 tons;
  • 18-20 m - 18-20 t;
  • 25-37 m - 20-25 t;
  • 40-50 m - about 50 t;
  • more than 50 m - for 100 ton machines.

The boom of the truck crane can be sectional or telescopic, and equipped with an additional jib.

By type of boom equipment

Boom equipment ensures the capture and movement of cargo in the operating area of ​​the truck crane. Includes fixed or retractable booms:

  • tower version;
  • telescopic;
  • lattice.

Types of truck cranes by cabin type

If we consider all types of truck cranes, we can divide them into two groups based on the type of cabin. She may be:

  1. stationary;
  2. unfixed.

The non-fixed cabin, in turn, can also be of different designs, namely:

  1. hydraulic;
  2. rotary.

The stationary cabin of the truck crane does not move, has a large panoramic glass and is protected by a metal mesh - it should protect the operator and equipment in the event of a possible fall of the load.

The non-fixed cabin has become more widespread. Hydraulic structures can change position to increase visibility for the driver. The most common cabins are rotating ones. When the truck crane is moved from the transport position to the working cabin, it rotates 180 degrees. This was done so that the crane in transport mode would take up less space and fit into the vehicle dimensions.

Main nodes

Self-propelled truck cranes consist of rotating and fixed units, interconnected by slewing bearings, and boom equipment.

Chassis

Crane equipment can be installed on truck chassis or on special structures characterized by increased cross-country ability.

The chassis refers to the non-rotating part of the truck crane and includes:

  • cargo chassis with various wheel formulas;
  • a spatial frame with four supports built into it - outriggers;
  • hydraulic systems.

In addition, the fixed part of such machines includes a hydraulic fluid tank, pipelines and a pump drive. For mobile cranes with a mechanical drive, an intermediate gearbox is installed on the frame. With electric drive - a generator is placed.

Boom equipment

The boom is the main working mechanism of lifting machines. Various types are available:

  1. Tower type. It is a vertical structure to which the boom is hinged.
  2. Lattice - with a flexible suspension system.
  3. Telescopic - capable of changing length due to retractable sections.

Telescopic structures are the most functional and practical. The boom can have a rigid or flexible suspension. The boom equipment includes rope-block systems, load-handling mechanisms and devices.

Slewing bearings

The base for attaching all rotating elements is the rotating platform.

Rotator includes:

  • crane boom consisting of sections;
  • lifting winch;
  • rotation mechanism;
  • hydraulic equipment;
  • control cabin;
  • counterweights and safety system.

The musculoskeletal mechanism ensures the rotation of the boom.

An additional load (counterweight) is installed on the rotating frame to balance the crane during loading and unloading operations.

Telescopic boom device

It consists of a lifting device, a mechanism for changing the length of the boom and separate sections inserted into each other:

  • a fixed outer section, hingedly attached to the stand of the turntable - base;
  • retractable middle section;
  • the upper section, at the front end of which cargo pulley blocks are installed, ensuring the lifting and lowering of loads.

Sections can have a box-section in the form of a rectangle, square, polyhedron, trapezoid or ovoid.

The ovoid section has the greatest strength and stability in combination with low metal consumption. Such an arrow is capable of withstanding heavy loads at maximum reach.

Examples of domestic truck cranes with an ovoid boom: KS-65721 “Galichanin”, KS-55713-1K-4 “Klintsy”, KS-45717K “Ivanovets”. The sections are extended by two hydraulic cylinders. In this case, the middle section extends first, then the upper one. The length can be adjusted both in a free position and with a load.

The telescopic boom can be additionally equipped with an extension and a jib. Boom equipment is equipped with hook hangers, magnetic washers or grab buckets. Hook hangers consist of a hook, a traverse and boom head blocks and ropes that form a cargo pulley.

Reversible distribution and rotary mechanism

The reversing mechanism is used to change the direction of rotation of the rotating part and the drum of the jib and cargo winches of cranes. Distributive - designed to distribute torque between rotating devices and winches.

The reversible distribution mechanism is available only on truck cranes with mechanics. On electrically or hydraulically driven machines, their functions are performed by electric and hydraulic motors. To perform loading or unloading, the equipment is transferred to the working position.

The stability of the working condition and the prevention of the structure from tipping over when lifting loads are ensured by special supports - outriggers.

Each support is adjustable in height, allowing the machine to stand stably on uneven surfaces.

Controlling a mechanically driven truck crane

Mechanical drive is found mainly in older models. Energy from the engine is transmitted to the working mechanisms through the transmission. The main components of automotive cranes with mechanical drive are:

  • power take-off;
  • bevel gear;
  • slewing support;
  • reverse distribution mechanism;
  • cargo and jib winches, hook suspension.

All control mechanisms are concentrated in the rotating frame cabin and are driven by the engine through the gearbox and various power devices.

The gearbox controls the operating speeds of the mechanisms and the engine speed. And cylindrical and conical reverses determine the direction of rotation.

Using the pedals, the height of the boom lift, the speed of movement of the mechanisms are adjusted, and the emergency clutch is released. The brakes are controlled by a pneumatic system driven by the vehicle's engine through a compressor.

Despite the fact that cars with mechanical drive have hardly been produced recently, such equipment copes with its functions.

  • high maintainability;
  • low cost of spare parts and components;
  • ease of maintenance.

The cost of “mechanics” is significantly lower than the price of equipment with an electric drive or hydraulics.

Features of the boom of the Galician truck crane

The crane boom deserves special attention. It has an ovoid profile, which is actively used in the engineering industry of many countries, as it demonstrates optimal performance. In the case of the “Galichanin” models, telescopic booms with three and five retractable sections, which are made from Swedish steel SSABDomex or WELDOX, can be used.

The special design of the boom allows telescoping of sections with a load attached to the slings. This design solution makes it possible to deliver cargo even to the most inaccessible places located between obstacles.

Hydraulic systems consist of the following elements:

  • hydraulic cylinders driving the main components and mechanisms;
  • a hydraulic motor consisting of cylinders with pistons that drives a drive shaft that winds the cable onto the winch;
  • a hydraulic distributor that ensures synchronous operation of the mechanisms;
  • a hydraulic pump designed to create pressure in the system;
  • hydraulic tank containing oil.

Cranes with hydraulic drive are absolutely reliable, easy to operate and cost-effective.

Their carrying capacity significantly exceeds “mechanics”. Limitations on the weight of transported loads are imposed based on the stability of the machine and the strength of the boom material used.

The hydraulic system units are resistant to breakdowns, but if they malfunction, they require complete replacement. Preventative maintenance of systems involves regular lubrication.

Since we are talking about expensive transport, for many companies the optimal solution is to rent a crane from a reliable service provider rather than purchase it as property.

Special chassis. Difference from road

Automotive crane units with a lifting capacity of up to 50 tons can be installed on all-wheel drive or standard chassis of domestic MAZ, KAMAZ, KrAZ vehicles and foreign brands MERCEDES, FORD, MAN, SCANIA, DAF with wheel arrangements 4×4, 6×6, 6×4, 8× 4.

The choice of chassis depends on the weight, lifting capacity and type of crane installation.

For truck cranes with a lifting capacity of over 50 tons, special 6, 7, 8, 9-axle chassis with wheel arrangements of 10x8, 12x8, 12x12, 16x10 are used. This number of axles allows you to maintain stability and provide high maneuverability.

The main difference between a special type of chassis and a road chassis is the combined frame of the crane unit and the base vehicle. The design can significantly reduce and redistribute the loads from the crane installation onto the frame.

Such cranes have increased maneuverability. Their carrying capacity can range from 50 to 1000 tons or more, and the lifting height of cargo can reach 150 meters. The operation of the machines is controlled from the crane operator's cabin.

Such machines operate during the laying of pipelines in the oil and gas industries, the construction of hydroelectric power stations and thermal power plants, and the construction of bridges and railways.

Powerful equipment on a special chassis costs more than special vehicles on a standard chassis. Operation is also more expensive.

Types of truck cranes by lifting capacity

If we talk about the types of truck cranes based on lifting capacity, the equipment is usually divided into four categories:

  • Small class (up to 8 tons).


The eight-ton truck crane 8t210 was developed back in the 70s, but is still in service.
The model has an outdated lattice boom. Any operator can operate any type of truck cranes with a lifting capacity of up to 8 tons, since this requires a 4th (up to 6.3 tons) or 5th category. The machines themselves are compact in size, lightweight and maneuverable. Such truck cranes are used to perform the most basic operations and are used mostly by utility and repair services.

  • Light class (up to 25 tons).

These machines are also compact and have low fuel consumption, but have a larger range of operations. The main areas of their application are repair work, laying utility networks, cargo transhipment, and construction.

  • Middle class (up to 50 tons).

If we consider different types of truck cranes in terms of lifting capacity, then 25-ton cranes will probably be the most numerous class. Such machines are widely used by construction and logistics companies, utilities and road services. In Russia, the domestic medium-tonnage trucks “Ivanovets” and “Galichanin” have gained the greatest popularity.

  • Heavy class (over 50 tons).

Each of the heavy types of truck cranes is an example of manufacturability and efficiency. In the design of such machines, manufacturers use numerous patented developments in an effort to increase the load capacity and reduce the overall weight of the machine.

  • Super heavy class (from 150 tons).

This category includes real giants. The most prominent representatives of the super-heavy class are truck cranes from Liebherr, Zumlion, XCMG and others. By the way, the world's largest truck crane in terms of lifting capacity reaches 2000 tons.

Chassis manufacturers

The equipment is installed on cars of Russian and foreign manufacturers.

The main supplier of cargo equipment for domestic cranes is. Ivanovsky, Klintsovsky, Galichsky, Ulyanovsky and other plants install their installations on its base.

The number of axles and wheel formulas depend on the load capacity. On many machines, all axles are driven and steered (except for the middle ones).

Types of truck cranes by chassis design

If we consider the types of truck cranes according to the characteristics of the vehicle chassis, we can distinguish two categories:

  1. on its own chassis;
  2. on a free chassis.

The first option has become widespread in other countries. For example, such popular types of truck cranes as Tadano, XCMG, Zoomlion, Grove, Krupp are mounted on the chassis directly at the factory. The only exception is, perhaps, Tadan, which in Russia can be found in tandem with chassis of other brands.

The version with a free automobile chassis has become widespread in the countries of the former CIS and, of course, in Russia. Therefore, almost all types of domestically assembled truck cranes fall into this category, including Ivanovets, Galichanin, Chelyabinets, Gazpromkran. They are installed in the vast majority of cases on medium-tonnage truck chassis. Such as MAZ, KamAZ, Ural, etc. Installation of cranes on vehicle chassis can be done both at the factory and after the truck has been put into operation. Refurbishment must be carried out by licensed companies. After re-equipment, the truck crane must be registered with Rostekhnadzor and the documents must be reissued with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate.
