Model features
In order to convert the tractor into an excavator, a strapping frame was designed and attached to it, which is necessary to enhance the power. On this frame there is a rotary column with a rotation angle of 160º, operating from a two-cylinder hydraulic drive. The boom and bucket operate from the same drive. The excavator is equipped with various attachments.

Using a YuMZ excavator, they develop small faces, create embankments, clear the territory and perform other installation work. This technique can be used as a crane or hydraulic hammer, a fork or a straight shovel.

Specifications
The YuMZ-6 excavator is a descendant of the well-known MTZ-5 tractor.
Despite its small dimensions, this excavator operates at the level of larger and more powerful equipment.

- the weight of the excavator during operation is 6600 kg;
- bucket capacity - 0.28 m³;
- when digging, the depth can reach up to 4.15 meters with a radius of up to 5.3 m and a blade width of 2.3 meters;
- when unloading, the height is 3.2 meters.
- overall dimensions of the machine: 7800x2500x3900 mm;
- track size – from 1400 to 1800 mm;
- fuel consumption - 10.8 liters per hour.
Different models of excavators were equipped with four-stroke engines of two different types, running without turbocharging on diesel fuel:
- D-65 with 60 hp power. with a cylinder capacity of 4.94 liters, complemented by an electric starting engine;
- D-242 with a power of 62 hp. (44 kilowatts) with a cylinder capacity of 4.75 liters.
Transmission parameters
The nine-speed gearbox, part of the transmission system of the YuMZ-6 excavator, contains several double gears. In addition, the system includes a dual-flow dry clutch. If the model has a gearbox, the number of gears doubles.
The car overcomes slopes of up to 10 degrees on the rise and reaches speeds of up to 32 km/h forward, up to 25 km/h back.

Chassis
The advantage of the unit, which makes it possible to optimize operation, is that the chassis is wheeled and not tracked. The rear wheels act as drive wheels, and the front wheels act as guides. The working surface of the wheel is equipped with pneumatic tires, which are excellent for working on loose or uneven surfaces.
The steering mechanism consists of a worm, a helical sector and a hydraulic booster.

Hydraulic system
Includes two independent hydraulic drives with piston-type hydraulic cylinders. One of the drives is responsible for the operation of the bucket, handle and boom, the second is responsible for the operation of the rotating mechanism, outriggers and bulldozer. Both hydraulic drives have a common filling tank.
The hydraulic system includes a set of equipment:
- oil pump;
- filling tank;
- oil filter;
- hydraulic cylinder distributor;
- shut-off valves for machine units with hydraulically equipped bodies.

The chassis of the YuMZ tractor is controlled using one lever and does not require instructions. The steering column is adjustable in height and installation angle.
Grab loader on an old YuMZ-6

What does it take to make a child happy? I need my father to let me drive his tractor. What could be cooler? What if you don’t just steer, what if you control a loader?
My father worked on a YuMZ-6 tractor: he raked hay into windrows, transported hay, and plowed the villagers’ gardens in spring and autumn.
Once his YuMZ-6 was even used for corn harvesting: they attached a trailed forage harvester. I don't remember its model, but it was very old. They restored it because the KSK-100 couldn’t handle it (always under repair).
And often I went with my father.
One fine day, the authorities decided to re-equip this tractor. We decided to hang a grab loader on it for the winter.
This YuMZ-6 and a loader, only with forks
The fuel tank was moved forward and the rear window was removed. And it seems that not only the window, the entire rear wall of the cabin was removed (I don’t remember exactly) and replaced with another insert that was included with the loader. The sprung seat was removed and a sofa was put in its place, without a back, of course. Now it has become more convenient to ride with a passenger.
A free space formed behind the back where the loader controls were located. We arrive at the place, throw our legs back and there they are, the loader control levers. There were six of them, but I could be wrong. One controlled the rotation of the boom around its axis, two more controlled this boom (raising/lowering and bending the boom), the fourth lever was used to grab the load. Another pair of levers are designed to move the stops into the working position.
It was cool, I’m sitting behind these levers, a horse with a sleigh rides up, I grab some hay (or it was straw), and put the load into this sleigh. Simply unforgettable emotions!

The loader also had a blade at the front, which my father used to clear farm roads and village streets. Then spring came, the loader was dismantled from the tractor. And YuMZ returned to its usual work. For some reason, they only put the loader on it for one winter, and they didn’t do it again. Apparently it didn’t live up to expectations or there was no longer a need.
The PE-0.8 backhoe loader was initially installed on the MTZ-5 tractor. The PE-0.8A loader was designed for YuMZ-6. It could be used both for earthmoving work and as a loader. It can be used to load bulk materials, fertilizers, straw, manure, etc. The main elements of the loader: frame, blade, rotary column, boom, support jacks, hydraulic drives and replaceable working parts: claws (forks), bucket, hook and etc.. The next stage in the development of the loader was the PE-F-1 model.

If anyone doesn’t know that there were farms there, they’ll never guess: everything is flat and overgrown with nettles. Only a couple of columns indicate that there was something there. Birch trees grow in the adjacent fields. And the village street is no longer a village street, but just a street. Everything was overgrown, not a single living soul, the poplars dried up, the fences fell, the houses were dismantled, and what they didn’t have time to dismantle was burned during one of the fires: someone set fire to the grass, and the grass there was as tall as a man, the fire swept through, no one noticed!

In essence, it is the YuMZ-6KL modification that can be considered an excavator. After the first model YuMZ-6A was discontinued, this version took the place of the base one. An agricultural machine was developed on its basis;
- YuMZ-6AK - was first released in 1978. The equipment cabin had better visibility, and the hydraulic system began to be equipped with power and position control.

- grabs of various sizes.

The ripper tooth is used for loosening dense or frozen soil, uprooting stumps and roots, opening paving stones and road surfaces, etc.

Existing modifications of the YuMZ excavator
The Southern Machine-Building Plant has developed several modifications of the YuMZ-6 tractor:
- YuMZ-6L is distinguished by a rounded radiator grille; outwardly the car resembled the MTZ-50. Has a starting motor.
- YuMZ-6AL had a rectangular hood, a steering rack adjustable in height and tilt. The appearance of the dashboard was changed and improvements were made to the design of the brake system.
- YuMZ-6AK with an adjustable hydraulic system (power and position control), with improved visibility of the cabin. It was first produced in 1978.
- YuMZ-6KL. In this model, the manufacturer installed standard mounts for a bulldozer and an excavator, and this particular modification is considered an excavator.
The YuMZ-6KL model eventually became the base model, and an agricultural machine was developed on its basis. A tractor based on the YuMZ-6KL model began to be used for leveling and field preparation, sowing and harvesting, and for loading for transportation.
Excavators of this type are still successfully used in construction and utility work, in agriculture for row cropping and loading and unloading operations, and in other industries for laying pipelines, cable lines, digging pits and other work.
