MTZ-5 is a general-purpose wheeled tractor model belonging to traction class 1.4. The production of this equipment was established at the Minsk Tractor Plant. Here MTZ-5 was assembled in 1957-1962. again, the model was produced by the Southern Machine-Building Plant from 1958 to 1972. The basis for the creation of Belarus-5 was the MTZ-2 tractor, which by that time was obsolete.
This special equipment is broadly multifunctional and is intended to perform work on harvesting and sowing grain crops, caring for row crops, pre-sowing treatment, plowing medium and light soils and transport work. The tractor is aggregated with a large number of loading and transport attachments: a multifunctional mounted hay hauler (KUN), a forklift and a haystack thrower. again, MTZ-5 serves as a chassis for a whole family of small hydraulic excavators.

Tractor MTZ-5: design features and modifications

The production of the popular MTZ-5 tractor, which belongs to heavy general-purpose agricultural machinery, began in the last century.
The unit had a traction class of 1.4. As for the manufacturer, the equipment was developed in the city of Minsk at a plant that later became better known for its products. The first models of the MTZ-5 tractor were created in Belarus. They were produced there from 1957 to 1962. Later, production of this model and its subsequent modifications was also established at Yuzhmash, where they were assembled from 1958 to 1972.

Historical reference

Yuzhmash - State Enterprise "PA "Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant" named after A. M. Makarov", specializes in the production of rocket and high-tech equipment. Was founded in 1944. Located in Dnepropetrovsk. Initially it had no name and was numbered No. 586. In addition to rocket and space technology, YuMZ produces trolleybuses, trams and tractors.

The MTZ-2 tractor, which by that time was already considered obsolete, was taken as the basis for the Belarus-5 model.

This machine was created for a wide range of work:

  • sowing and harvesting;
  • plowing and soil fertilization;
  • treatment of fields with chemicals;
  • transportation of goods.

Such versatility is achieved thanks to the presence of additional equipment that can be used to aggregate this machine. For example, a hay thrower, a forklift or a universal mounted hay hauler. MTZ-5 was often used as a chassis for a number of small hydraulic excavators.

Features of using the Belarus MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor

Before starting operation, it is necessary to run-in the engine so that the parts are run in and the lubricant penetrates into all the necessary places. The MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor must be kept clean and maintained regularly. The walk-behind tractor is lubricated according to the table given in the instructions.

Detailed service instructions can be found at this link.

You can study the engine operation and repair instructions in detail here.

Engine

The Belarus MTZ-05 walk-behind tractor can be equipped with small-displacement engines UD-15, UD-25 and their modifications. Motors of this type are designed based on the MEMZ-966 Zaporozhets model. The UD-15 is a single-cylinder engine, and the UD-25 is available with two cylinders. Depending on the produced engine configuration, they may have different names UD-15G, UD-25G, UD-25S.

Engine UD 15

The walk-behind tractor can be equipped with Japanese Honda and Lifan engines, as well as Chinese Lianlong engines, which are excellent in terms of technical characteristics. The difference is characterized by the build quality and the number of engine hours that are allocated for the operation of each motor. The indicators from the manufacturer Honda stand out especially.

Gasoline with any octane number is suitable as fuel, the main thing is that it is clean and without impurities. SAE 30 seasonal oil is suitable as a lubricant. Alternatively, you can purchase 5w30 or 10w30. In winter, it is advisable to use special synthetic oil 0w40.

Adjustment of valves

It is also necessary to check the gap between the valves regularly, as after a certain period the gap may increase, and this leads to uneven operation of the engine and insufficient power. The optimal gap is considered to be from 0.1 to 0.15 mm.

In order to make the adjustment, you must adhere to the following steps:

  • Disassemble the casing and remove the oil bath;
  • Using a screwdriver, loosen the nut, then insert the blade and tighten it;
  • Focusing on the blade, slowly tighten the nut;
  • In this way, adjustments are made until the free movement of the valve is eliminated. Check the density;
  • Put back the oil pan and casing.

Carburetor adjustment

If the walk-behind tractor does not maintain the accumulated speed, then this indicates the need for regulatory manipulations. Typically, adjustments are carried out before work at the beginning of the season. After a long period of inactivity, equipment requires careful maintenance, as well as after the unit has been used at maximum power for a long time. Pre-warm the engine and begin adjusting the carburetor:

  • Screw in the low and maximum throttle screws completely, and then loosen one and a half turns.
  • Start the engine and leave for 10 minutes.
  • Set the power plant control lever to the minimum division. Make sure that the engine does not stall.
  • At idle, adjust the idle speed using the throttle valve screw.
  • Check the tightening of the screw, where if excessive force is applied, the mixture becomes richer, and if loosened, the amount of air increases.

Features of modifications

A year after the start of production, MTZ initiates a program to refine the basic configuration of the tractor in order to improve the performance characteristics of the machine. This is how the MTZ-5K tractor appeared, which was equipped with a separate-module mounted hydraulic system.

After 1958, the MTZ-5 series line was replenished with the MTZ-5L and MTZ-5M models, the final letters in the names of which indicated the type of engine start: using a starting motor or an electric starter, respectively.

Following them, the designers created a modification with the letter “C”, equipped with a single-seat closed cabin. The MTZ-5MS and MTZ-5LS tractors were mainly used when working on difficult soils and were often equipped with a half-track.

As for Yuzhmash, at first it produced the classic version of MTZ-5. However, soon their own production of tractors was established, which later retained the well-known name “Belarus”, but are known throughout the world as the YuMZ tractors.

Power point

The classic model "Belarus-5" was supplied to the market with a "D-40" engine with a power of 40 hp. This four-stroke diesel engine, equipped with four cylinders, later acquired modifications D-40L and D-40M, which were installed on tractors with the corresponding letters in the model marking. The letters L and M indicated the type of engine starting: electric starter or starting motor, respectively. The MTZ-5LS tractor was equipped with a D-48L engine with a starting gasoline engine and a vortex chamber mixture formation. The D-48M engine on a modification of the MTZ-5MS tractor was started using a starter. Both D-48 models have an increased crankshaft speed (compared to the D-40) and have a power of 48 hp.

Design changes in the engines of the Belarus-5 tractor compared to its predecessor MTZ-2:

  1. Reducing engine weight and increasing its performance characteristics.
  2. More advanced electronics (in particular lighting, alarms, etc.).
  3. DC generator.
  4. Electrical equipment with a current of 12 V.
  5. 135 Amh batteries.

Design

Once upon a time, MTZ-5 was considered the best tractor of our time due to a number of original and advanced solutions that were reflected in its model. In particular, the equipment received a more advanced clutch, a new hydraulic system and a power take-off shaft with an independent drive.

By using surface hardening of parts when heated with high-frequency currents, engineers significantly increased the performance characteristics of the tractor chassis and transmission elements. The chassis system has become more resistant to loads thanks to the modernization of the front axle design and an increase in the diameter of the small wheels while simultaneously reducing the pressure in their tires.

The tractor's lighting system was expanded, resulting in four headlights. The total weight of the structure decreased by 1/4 ton.

The result was a much more versatile tractor compared to the MTZ-2, which was perfectly aggregated with a wide variety of agricultural machines and equipment that required the drive of organs from the power take-off shaft.

Among the working equipment, the MTZ-5 was equipped with a hydraulic hook, a semi-independent drive, a hydraulic attachment system, a PTO and a drive pulley.

Separately, it is worth noting the ability not only to change the track width and move the hubs of the drive wheels along the axle shafts, but also to install half-tracks, which significantly increased the cross-country ability on various (including difficult) soils.

MTZ-5 "Belarus" is a brand of universal row-crop wheeled tractors of medium power for general purpose, produced by the Minsk Tractor Plant from 1956 to 1962 and the Southern Machine-Building Plant from 1958 to 1972.

MTZ-5 wheeled tractors

were manufactured at the Minsk Tractor Plant in January 1956, and a little later the tractor was put into mass production and put on the conveyor.
MTZ-5 was developed on the basis of the MTZ-2 tractor, popular in those years, with a power of 36 horsepower, produced by the plant from 1953 to 1957. Subsequently, the production of tractors MTZ-5L, MTZ-5M, MTZ-5MS, MTZ-7 was established .
The tractor was intended

to carry out work on the cultivation of row crops (corn, sugar beets, potatoes, sunflowers, vegetables and melons, etc.). And also for shallow cultivation of light and medium soils, sowing and harvesting of some grain crops.

The tractor was combined with a large number of mounted, semi-mounted equipment and agricultural machines. Various mounted loading and transport equipment were designed and produced: hay thrower, universal mounted hay hauler (KUN), forklift. The tractor was also used as a chassis for a whole series of excavators.

and their modifications were produced at the Minsk plant from 1956 to 1962.
Production of MTZ-5 and its modifications was also launched at the Southern Machine-Building Plant in Dnepropetrovsk, where tractors were assembled under the YuMZ
from 1958 to 1972.

Wheeled tractors "Belarus"

MTZ-5 family - universal agricultural tractors of medium power on which diesel engines D-40, D-48 with an electric starter or a starting two-stroke gasoline engine were installed.

The tractor was built according to the classical design and had a semi-frame design. The semi-frame was made of channels connected to each other by a front beam.

Tractor frame

consisted of a half-frame and three main units: clutch, gearbox and rear axle.

An engine with auxiliary equipment and a radiator for the cooling system are mounted in the front part of the frame. The engine was attached to the semi-frame and had a standard lining with decorative elements]. Directly behind the engine were the tractor's power transmission mechanisms: clutch, gearbox and rear axle, on the housing of which the brake mechanisms and power take-off shaft (PTO) were mounted, as well as the rear linkage mechanism of the hydraulic system.

Hydraulic system

— separate-unit: the hydraulic system pump receives rotation from the engine through the PTO drive gears. To work with trailed machines, a crossbar with a trailing fork was installed on the trailing rods of the rear linkage. The agricultural track is variable and could be adjusted

a D-40K diesel engine, improved compared to
the MTZ-2, Fuel consumption decreased to 210 g/e.h. The engine's cylinder diameter was increased (105 mm), and the crankshaft speed increased to 1500 rpm. The clutch had a more advanced design, which made it possible to install a power take-off shaft (PTO) with an independent drive. A number of changes also affected the hydraulic system using the NS-37 unit.

The chassis system was improved by changing the design of the front axle and installing larger front wheels. The design used a more powerful generator. Four headlights appeared.

Tractor MTZ-5

MTZ-5 is a general-purpose wheeled tractor model belonging to traction class 1.4.
The production of this equipment was established at the Minsk Tractor Plant. Here MTZ-5 was assembled in 1957-1962. Also, the model was produced by the Southern Machine-Building Plant from 1958 to 1972. The basis for the creation of Belarus-5 was the MTZ-2 tractor, which by that time was obsolete. This equipment is widely universal and is intended for work on harvesting and sowing grain crops, caring for row crops, pre-sowing treatment, plowing medium and light soils and transport work. The tractor is aggregated with a large number of loading and transport attachments: a universal mounted hay hauler (UHN), a forklift and a haystack thrower. MTZ-5 also serves as a chassis for a whole family of small hydraulic excavators.

Attachments

It is possible to connect additional equipment to the motor cultivator, trailed equipment, and attachments for the MTZ-09N walk-behind tractor:

  • Potato planter. Used to perform work related to planting potatoes: plowing the soil, planting, hilling, forming row furrows.
  • Potato digger. It is used for easy and quick harvesting of large areas of potatoes, carrots and other root crops.
  • Rotary mower. Facilitates agricultural work by mowing grass and other unwanted vegetation.
  • Plow for walk-behind tractor. It is used for treating the top layer of soil, as well as for fertilizing the land with manure or any other organic compound.
  • Communal brush. Used to clear the area of debris.
  • Snow blower. Necessary for clearing roads of snow in winter.
  • Cultivator harrow. It is used for loosening the soil, leveling the soil surface, planting seeds and fertilizers.
  • Universal hiller. Used during inter-row cultivation of row crops.
  • Trailer. Necessary for transporting small-sized cargo.

Attachments are connected using a hitch unit.

Modifications

There were several versions of this model. The Minsk Tractor Plant assembled the classic modification for about a year. Then MTZ-5 underwent modernization. The equipment received a separate-aggregate hydraulic system and became known as MTZ-5K. However, production of this modification lasted only a few months.

In 1958, Belarus-5 was redesigned again. Production of versions MTZ-5L and MTZ-5M began. The letters “M” and “L” denoted modifications that received a different method of starting the diesel engine and a new set of electrical equipment. The MTZ-5M model was launched using an electric starter (DC equipment), MTZ-5L - through a starting motor (AC equipment).

Later, versions with the letter “C” appeared. They designated models equipped with a closed cabin. MTZ-5LS and MTZ-5MS were intended for use in difficult soil conditions and were optionally equipped with a half-track. Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant initially also produced MTZ-5. However, then the company named its product YuMZ-5, while retaining the previous trade name “Belarus”.

Specifications

  • MTZ-5 received a 40-horsepower engine, which is not very powerful.
  • The operating weight of the equipment was 3.19 tons.
  • The specific fuel consumption of the tractor was 200 g/hp. per hour with a fuel tank capacity of 90 liters. "Belarus-5" had a speed range of 1.4-22.3 km/h.
  • The width of MTZ-5 was 1884 mm, length – 4095 mm, height – 2390 mm.
  • Ground clearance was 450 mm under the rear axle, 650 mm under the rear wheels, 640 mm under the front axle.

Engine

The classic modification of Belarus-5 was equipped with a 4-stroke 4-cylinder D-40 engine. The engine had a power of 40 “horses”. The MTZ-5M and MTZ-5L versions were equipped with the D-40M units with an electric starter and the D-40L units with a starting motor. MTZ-5LS received a redesigned D-48L engine, MTZ-5MS - D-48M. The first was distinguished by vortex-chamber mixture formation. The units of the latest versions of Belarus-5 had a power of 48 “horses” and a rotation speed of 1600 rpm. Moreover, all power plants were unified.

The design of the MTZ-5 engines in comparison with the MTZ-2 was redesigned: – the tractor received 12-volt electrical equipment; – the alarm system and electric lighting system have become more advanced; – “Belarus-5” acquired 135 Amh batteries and a DC generator with a relay regulator; – engine weight has been reduced and wear resistance has increased.

Device

MTZ-5 received several solutions that made it one of the best tractors of its time. The equipment acquired a perfect clutch, a new hydraulic system and a PTO with an independent drive.

The wear resistance of the elements of the chassis system and power transmission was significantly increased through the use of surface hardening of parts, supplemented by high-frequency heating. The modified design of the front axle and enlarged front wheels, characterized by lower tire pressure, made the chassis more resistant to loads.

The number of headlights in Belarus-5 has increased to 4, and the weight has decreased by 250 kg.

In comparison with the MTZ-2, the tractor turned out to be more versatile and could be combined with a variety of agricultural machines of various types, as well as with harvesting devices and equipment that required the drive of organs from the PTO. The model received an NS-37 hydraulic system with 2 remote cylinders. The Belarus-5 working equipment included a hydraulic hook, a hydraulic attachment system, a semi-independent drive, a drive pulley and a PTO. The drive wheels made it possible to steplessly change the track width and move the hubs along the axle shafts. The installation of half-tracks made it possible to improve the maneuverability of the vehicle.

Initially, MTZ-5 was produced without a cabin. Later versions received a single-seat, simple frame-type cabin.

Production of the MTZ-5 was completed in the middle of the last century, so finding this tractor in working condition is quite difficult. The cost of models of recent years of production will be 50-150 thousand rubles.

Analogs

An analogue of the MTZ-5 can be considered the MTZ-7, which was an improved version of this model.
