How to shorten a chainsaw chain with your own hands?
Long-term use of the headset leads to its gradual sagging.
Faced with this for the first time, many inexperienced fellers do not know what to do if the chain on the chainsaw stretches. To solve the problem, the first thing you need to do is assess the level of sagging. After this, you can begin to prepare tools that will help shorten the chain on the chainsaw. The subsequent procedure should look like this:
- First, you will need to carefully disconnect the links in the sagging part of the headset. Doing this with a grinder will be quite difficult and dangerous, especially if you are repairing a hard diamond chain. It is best to disconnect the links using a needle file or an ordinary file. When performing the procedure, it is necessary to grind off each side of the links. Then you need to unscrew the ground rivets using the prepared beard;
- Immediately after the operator has been able to carefully rivet the chain, it is necessary to set aside the disconnected part of the headset. There is no need to throw them away, as they may later be needed to replace worn links;
- After this, the operator must rivet the chain evenly. To do this, you need to count the teeth in the saw element in advance and carefully connect the remaining links together using a rivet. To do this, you need to press the side parts of the links tightly against the rivet being used;
- Then you can proceed to welding the links. The elements welded to each other will need to be carefully cleaned with a file, otherwise the bulges and other welding marks will severely scratch the surface of the tire;
- Before riveting the chainsaw chain, you need to let the headset cool. After this, a household drill must be equipped with a pre-prepared 7-centimeter steel blank, machined from an ordinary nail;
Quite often, instead of a blank and 2 needle files, a special riveter for chains is used to shorten the headset at home. It allows you to connect the links faster and more accurately without the need for further processing with a file.
Construction and Dacha in clear language
The STIHL MS 180 chainsaw is an indispensable tool designed for harvesting wood and other construction work made of wood. It is one of the most recognized gardening devices that is equipped with multi-functional capabilities.
The weight of the tool is about 4 kg. The power reaches 1.5 kW, and the bus length is 35 cm.
Note that this model of saw came from a semi-professional device with electronic ignition and fairly fast chain tension. In addition, the STIHL MS 180 saw has 2 tanks, intended for gasoline and for an oil mixture.
One of the main features is reduced vibration.
This result is achieved thanks to 4 shock absorbers. It is no secret that high depreciation has a harmful effect on human health and Europe has been fighting it for a long time.
It should be noted that it is not advisable to disassemble this saw yourself without special instructions; in this case, it is better to entrust the device to specialists.
General concept of the chainsaw chain lubrication system
To understand how important the choice of chain oil is for a chainsaw, let’s consider the principle of operation of the lubrication mechanism itself using the example of the Stihl 180. This model was chosen as one of the most common modifications of chainsaws from.
The chain lubrication system of the Shtil 180 chainsaw consists of several main parts:
- expansion tank;
- lubricant supply tubes from the reservoir to the pump;
- oil pump;
- channels for supplying lubricant to the tire (on some saws, the intensity of pumping oil into the tire can be adjusted);
- channel systems inside the bar for distributing lubricant over the entire working surface of the saw set.
In general, the intensity of the lubricant supply for the Stihl 180 chainsaw chain is not manually adjustable. You can adjust the oil supply to the chainsaw chain in some other models (for example, on Husqvarna saws).
And in this saw a simple rule works: the higher the engine speed, the more intense the pump rotor rotates and the greater the quantity of lubricating fluid supplied to the saw set.
There are no finer settings without using methods not specified in the operating instructions.
Oil is poured into a special tank every time you fill up with fuel. The designers designed this chainsaw in such a way that after the fuel has been used up, there should still be a small amount of oil left in the expansion tank. That is, with proper operation, the likelihood that the chainsaw will run dry is eliminated.
The lubrication system works as follows. The crankshaft, through a kinematic connection, drives a rotary oil pump of the simplest design.
The oil pump creates a vacuum and sucks lubricant from the reservoir. Next, he drives it under pressure into the tire channel system. The oil enters the driven teeth of the chain and spreads throughout the headset. The chain, the working surface of the tire and its front needle bearing are lubricated.
Chainsaw design
A chainsaw consists of several large independent units.
- The internal combustion engine is designed to generate mechanical energy, which is used to drive the chain saw.
- The gearbox transmits torque from the engine to the cutting tool. It is a set of gears and intermediate shafts.
- The clutch is an intermediate link between the gearbox and the chain. It is used for short-term breaking of the gearbox-chain chain. Ensures that the chain saw remains stationary at idle speed. Interrupts or weakens the transmission torque in emergency situations (for example, braking the saw to a complete stop), which allows the engine to work and not stall.
- An automatic brake interrupts the operation of the chain if it breaks, rebounds from the wood being processed, or if abnormal operating conditions occur.
- The bar is a guide for the chain saw.
- Chain tension mechanism.
- Chain lubrication device and other elements.

Troubleshooting Circuit Problems
During operation of the chainsaw, it is necessary to constantly monitor the lubrication of the chain. After all, it is this part that works in the most difficult conditions. The chain is constantly overheated and dust and abrasive particles become clogged with it. All this negatively affects its service life. A special lubricant will correct the situation. It is supplied to the chain from the tank, thereby ensuring unhindered operation.
If lubrication does not occur during operation, there is a high risk of overheating. When there is no oil flow, the chain begins to stretch. At the same time, there is still a possibility of it jamming or spontaneously jumping off, as a result of which a person can receive serious injury.
The channels through which fuel is supplied can become clogged with small particles, so it is advisable to clean them periodically
It is also important to monitor the oil level in the tank. Debris in the channel is a common cause of chain brake failure.
This may have a negative impact on your work.
But what to do if all the recommendations are followed, but the oil still leaks. It is necessary to ensure that the chainsaw is operating correctly. It is likely that it was assembled incorrectly. If the breakdown has not been identified, it is recommended to take it to a workshop. In some cases, it is necessary to replace the pump, but this should be done if the saw is new. Old tools leak due to worn out reservoir.
Only a specialist can assess the current condition of the chainsaw. If you lack knowledge or lack confidence in your own abilities, it is advisable to entrust instrument repair to a professional.
Each chainsaw, regardless of its model, brand, or class, has approximately the same structure. It consists of several important components, including the lubrication system. Without the latter, the operation of the power unit is impossible. Due to the functioning of the forced lubrication system, the tool chain reduces the risk of severe wear, which is guaranteed in conditions of constant friction of the carved element against the guide bar and inevitable heating. When the chain mechanism is lubricated, friction is softened; the chainsaw operator needs to repair this element or completely replace it much less often.
Chainsaw setup work
Work on adjusting a chainsaw is divided into two groups:
- setting up individual nodes;
- preventive tool maintenance.
Carburetor settings
The carburetor is one of the components that ensures stable operation of the chainsaw. The speed at which the speed increases, the power output, and the uniformity of sawing depend on it.
Adjusting the unit comes down to setting the minimum and maximum speed of the internal combustion engine, as well as setting the idle speed. This can be done independently or with the help of a professional technician.
With a properly adjusted, clean carburetor, the engine provides:
- immobility of the chain in idle mode;
- smooth and fast increase in chainsaw engine speed;
- When operating, the gasoline unit sounds similar to a 4-stroke engine.
Chain tension
Chain tension adjustment is carried out:
- when installing a chain on a chainsaw after sharpening;
- when the tension weakens during operation of the chainsaw;
- when replacing a worn or faulty chain with a new one.
The chain tension is carried out with a special screw. Most often, for convenience, it is placed on the side surface. The tension force is adjusted experimentally. The normal position of the chain is determined by the tire, and the lower part of the chain cannot have any play, since it should not sag.
The degree of tension is determined manually - with a hand wearing a protective glove, the chain is scrolled. With the chain in the normal position in the tire, the movement of the cutting tool should be free, without much effort.
Note: when adjusting the chain tension, the brake must be in a free state - unlocked.
Tip: when operating the saw in winter conditions, tensioning must be carried out on a heated saw - as the temperature rises, the metal elements expand and the chain may sag. At the end of the work, the tension should be loosened - during cooling, excessive stress may arise from contraction of the metal during the cooling process.
Chain lubrication mechanism
For stable operation, the chain must be lubricated with oil. This role is performed by a special unit - the lubrication mechanism. During operation, interruptions in its operation may occur:
- there is a lack of oil in the tank, as a result of which a small amount of lubricating fluid will flow to the chain - it is necessary to replenish the oil level;
- clogging of the outlet channels - the filter needs to be cleaned and replaced;
- The small diameter of the outlet hole is adjusted with a special screw.
During normal operation of the chain lubrication system, traces of oil can be seen if you bring the running saw to a light, uncontaminated surface, for example, to a fresh cut of wood (stump).
The amount of oil supplied to the chain depends on the operating conditions. With dense, viscous or damp wood, the oil consumption should be greater. Dry material will require less lubricant.
Semi-synthetic oil of the Stihl brand
Very often, owners of such chainsaws wonder what kind of oil can be used for the saw. Its operation may be affected by:
- cutting set;
- climate;
- wood species
To solve this problem, the Shtil company developed a universal semi-synthetic oil. It is suitable for all high-speed chainsaws. Under any conditions, chains can be lubricated with this oil. The tool will work flawlessly.
Since Shtil semi-synthetics are intended for chains, they are made from special high-quality materials and do not contain various toxic substances that can cause cancer. The oil fully meets the most stringent environmental requirements.
The Russian climate is quite harsh. There are areas in our country where frosts often exceed -20°C. The latest Stihl chainsaw chain oil has been specially developed for use in cold conditions. In such frost it demonstrates excellent fluidity.
Special additives included in the oil prevent the cutting set from becoming oily; they will extend the life of other lubricated parts. A saw with this oil starts easily even after long-term storage.
The use of such chain lube reduces wear on the saw chain. Due to the high endurance of the oil at high temperatures, the cutting set is ideally protected. This oil is not afraid of peak temperature loads. Smoke almost never appears.
Of course, anyone who owns a chainsaw knows how important good quality oil is. And, everyone dreams, there is no need to say what it really is, that this is the typical “life force” of a given device for producing real and effective work
Today there is an unlimited number of oils and, as the saying goes, the choice is very large.
But, often, not every owner of electrical equipment of this kind knows what kind of oil to use for his steel friend, so that the operation of the chainsaw is not only easy, but also productive. Therefore, below we will discuss the issue regarding the correct choice of the manufacturer of the calm. Also, what it is to help the chainsaw in its time of its specific activity, and not harm. Let's get started with what we need.

Main brands of motor oils for chainsaws
The leaders in the production of high-quality lubricants for chainsaws and brush cutters are the companies Shtil and Husqvarna. Their range includes both conventional mineral lubricants for two-stroke engines and synthetic oils for severe operating conditions. Let's take a closer look at the range.
STIHL HP
STIHL HP mineral lubricant was specially developed by STIHL engineers for use in their tools. That is why owners of Shtil chainsaws and lawn mowers are recommended to use this type of oil.
Its color is red, shelf life in a closed container is no more than four years. It is packaged in several types of containers, so you can choose the most convenient packaging for yourself. Not so long ago, convenient containers of 20 grams appeared, which are diluted with one liter of gasoline. For those who rarely use a chainsaw, this is the best option. Can be diluted and used immediately.
STIHL HP fully complies with high European standards.
HP Ultra
Another oil from Stihl. It has a synthetic base, due to which it has improved combustion characteristics, cleanliness and engine protection.
Recommended by the manufacturer for long-term use in harsh conditions. Ideal for working at low temperatures. HP Ultra does not harm the environment, since oil spilled on the ground decomposes by 80% in just 21 days.
Packaged in two types of containers, 100 ml and liter bottles. The proportion of the finished fuel mixture is 1:50, which means a 100 mm bottle is enough to prepare 5 liters of the mixture. Green color. Shelf life 4 years.
The cost of this oil is significantly higher than the cost of STIHL HP, so it is not profitable to use it constantly.
It is worth noting that Stihl oils, before going on sale, go through the company’s laboratory, where they are tested to ensure they meet all requirements.
When developing oils, much attention is paid to fuel combustion, cold start characteristics, biodegradability, and viscosity change at different temperatures (information from the company’s official website)
Husqvarna HP 2-stroke
Husqvarna HP oil, like its STIHL HP counterpart, is also designed specifically for 2-stroke engines.
According to the manufacturer, this type of oil has additives that compensate for the low quality of fuel, which is important for our country. The declared octane number of gasoline at gas stations rarely corresponds to the real one.
Husqvarna HP – semi-synthetic, green. Packaged in liter or ten liter containers. The proportion of the mixture is 1: 50, i.e. 20 grams per liter. During the period of running in the saw engine or when working in cold weather, it is possible to increase the proportion to 1:40, which will give the engine greater protection and increase its service life.
Today, there are a large number of lubricants for two-stroke engines on the market from different manufacturers. For this reason, answering the question of which chainsaw oil is best is quite difficult. Our opinion is that you should trust reliable companies, which are Shtil, Husqvarna, Oregon, Champion. It is their oils that will maximize the protection of your tool’s engine and extend its service life.
Unscrupulous manufacturers often disguise their products under well-known brands (Husqvarna, Shtil, etc.). Such oils are of low quality and can harm the engine. In order not to be deceived, it is necessary to purchase lubricants from official representatives who have the necessary certificates for the products. You can learn how to distinguish a fake from an original from the video:

Yesterday, for some reason, the crankshaft bearings jammed during startup. I sorted out the dirt there and washed and lubricated everything. everything started spinning. assembled in reverse order. The saw does not start, there is a spark, there is gas. there is a current one BUT. assembled using transparent silicone sealant. I assembled it and after an hour I started trying to start it. is silent. and also poured zero under the candle. Maybe it won't start because the sealing is bad? The new saw was used 5 times in total.
dirt in the bearing means dirt in the gasoline! I don’t even know, try a different sealant. But that’s probably not the reason!
in the first part in the photo you can see a bottle with 80% oil that they are scorched because of this and are scuffed
How did you determine that it was scorched?
Container color print quality. Well, a great video right away.
Well, you are an “expert”! 1) The label is not really visible in the photo, but you saw the quality of the print and identified a fake, or rather, YOU SAW IMMEDIATELY) 2) The color of the bottle can distort the camera in any way, depending on the white balance settings and the sensitivity of the camera itself. 3) The oil was not bought on the market, but from an OFFICIAL STIHL DEALER along with the saw!
They even repair chainsaws here))). And they say it’s a car site. I also have a calm, 290 ms, and I took apart the current oil hose and changed it
Nice chainsaw. It has been working for me since 2008 and there are no problems. I cut about 12 cubic meters a year to heat my house.
This is what it looks like, more or less, it’s just a mini bikini
Do-it-yourself adjustment of the Partner 350 chainsaw carburetor
Before you start tuning the standard carburetor of the Partner model, you need to thoroughly clean it of dust, dirt and carbon deposits that have accumulated on the walls. In addition to the carburetor, you will need to wash and dry the fuel and air filters. Otherwise, the operator will not be able to accurately set the required engine speed.
In the upper left part of the protective plastic body of the Partner saw there are holes, inside of which the manufacturer provides bolts for adjusting the carburetor. Having found them, you can begin basic configuration of the node. To do this, the left and right screws, which are responsible for the quantity and quality of revolutions, respectively, must be set to the fully tightened position. Immediately after this, they must be loosened by 1/5 of a turn. The third adjustment bolt, marked T, must be left in the position in which it is installed.
The final adjustment of the Partner 350 chainsaw carburetor is performed in the following order:
- First you need to start the saw and let its motor run to fully warm up;
- After 5 minutes you can start adjusting. First, you need to start turning the left bolt in the direction of the clock until the engine reaches maximum speed. Then the left bolt must be turned 1.4 turns in the opposite direction. After performing these steps, the Partner chainsaw engine should idle confidently;
- If, after manipulating the left adjusting screw, the chain on the bar begins to rotate, then it must be stopped by alternately turning the bolt T;
- Then you need to move on to adjusting the quality of the fuel mixture. To do this, the right adjusting screw will need to be turned in the direction of the clock hand. As soon as the motor reaches the maximum permissible speed, the screw must be unscrewed 1/4 turn in the opposite direction.
Why does the chain fly off and break?
If the chain falls off the chainsaw or it breaks, this means that there is some kind of problem with the device; under normal conditions it should not do this. There are three reasons why a chain falls off:
- Tire problems. They lead to loosening of the tension, which can lead to the chain breaking. Most often, this problem occurs in the groove between the outer plate on the chain set housing and the inner plate on the motor housing. The casing with the tire is secured with a bolt, which can become loose during operation of the chainsaw, as a result of which the tire begins to move or vibrate. To solve this problem, you need to find and lower the chain brake, for which you need to turn the tension screw, which is located next to the tire, until it is fully tensioned.
- The chain has stretched. Sagging may indicate a malfunction of the chainsaw mechanism. During operation, the metal is deformed, which means it can become 0.5-1 cm longer. In this case, it is recommended to replace or shorten the chain.
- The drive sprocket is poorly secured. To secure it, you need to remove the engine protective cover and spark plugs, and then pull out the air filter. The spark plug itself also needs to be unscrewed, after which a special stopper is installed in its place to secure the piston. Turn the fastening disk clockwise until the piston stops in the uppermost position. A thick rope folded several times can act as a stopper. After fixing the piston, clamp the drive sprocket. Reassemble the chainsaw, installing all parts in the reverse order.

Malfunctions of the pump and the system as a whole
As you know, nothing lasts forever in this world and everything has to be repaired over time. The oil system of the Shtil ms 180 is no exception, and has its own specific malfunctions. Let's take a closer look at them.
Signs of a malfunctioning lubrication system are as follows:
- the chainsaw chain is absolutely dry and does not shine;
- oil does not leave the oil tank;
- the chain stretches quickly and this happens constantly;
- the saw bar moves to the side when sawing;
- The tire also heats up in the area of the drive sprocket and the paint melts.
All these signs directly or indirectly indicate problems in the chainsaw chain lubrication system.
The first thing to do after you suspect that chain lubricating oil is not being supplied is to check its supply. There are two ways to do this. The first is described in detail in the instructions for the tool and consists in the fact that you need to start the chainsaw, increase the gas as much as possible and point it towards any obstacle.
If the lubrication system is working properly, the oil will fly off from the tip of the tire and a strip of oily drops will appear on the surface towards which the tire is pointed. If there are still violations in the system, the surface will remain clean.
The second way is to remove the tire from the chainsaw and start it. When the engine speed increases, oil will flow from the oil channel at the tire shank installation site; if this does not happen, it is necessary to look for the cause of the malfunction.
Diagnostics
Diagnostics should begin with inspecting and checking the oil receiver (filter) of the Stihl 180 saw. As a rule, if the filter is very dirty, the oil supply may stop.
To save money, you can try to clean a clogged filter by thoroughly rinsing it in gasoline.
Next, you need to remove the drum sprocket and check the condition of the drive gear. The thread on it must be clearly defined, not licked or have any other defects; also, when the gear is removed, it is necessary to check the wire lever. It must press the gear tightly and not turn, otherwise the gear stands still and does not transmit force to the pump, as a result of which the oil supply stops.
If all of the above methods to detect and eliminate faults do not produce results, it is necessary to use extreme measures, i.e. dismantle the pump.
How to remove the pump
The oil pump is installed on the right side of the bottom of the housing, in the same place an oil line coming from the chainsaw tank is connected to it. To remove the pump, you will first need to release the saw from the handle; to do this, unscrew the rear handle of the unit and disconnect the throttle control rod. At the next stage, you need to remove the handle shock absorber plugs and, using a powerful slotted screwdriver, squeeze them out of their seats on the handle.
Read also: How to properly castrate piglets video
After the handle is removed, the chainsaw body is turned upside down. The hose leading from the oil tank to the pump will be immediately visible. It must be removed from its seat.
The pump itself is removed using an M5 threaded screw and a wide washer. The length of the screw should be approximately 45-50 mm. A washer is put on the screw and it is screwed into the pump (the inside of the pump has threads). Next, as the screw is screwed in, the washer stop will force the oil pump to rise along the threads. Thus, the pump is removed from its seat. Before starting work, we recommend reading the article on how to disassemble Shtil 180.
To better understand the process of removing the pump, you can watch the video below. In the video, the service center master shows in detail how to remove the oil pump from a chainsaw, and also describes the main malfunctions of the supply system.
The Shtil 180 oil pump is a very high-quality and reliable part, so it is necessary to change it only as a last resort, when all other elements of the system have already been checked.
After the pump is removed, it must be cleaned and purged. As a rule, the main failure of the oil pump is its blockage. Having eliminated it, you can install the pump in place.
Replacing the pump is only required if it is not possible to remove the blockage.
The reason for oil leaks on the bottom of the chainsaw
The Shtil 180 chainsaw has a characteristic malfunction, which consists in insufficient sealing of the installation site of the oil hose in the chainsaw body and the appearance of a leak at this point. To eliminate it, just remove the handle of the Stihl MS 180 saw, disconnect the hose itself, wash and degrease the seat in the body and the hose shank, then apply sealant and install the hose in place. This simple operation will reliably eliminate the malfunction and the oil will stop leaking.

In this article we will talk about how to properly repair this tool.
Chainsaw repair Shtil 180
In order to carry out repairs correctly, you need to understand the internal mechanism. This rule applies to any instrument. Let's look at more popular difficulties that may arise when working with a chainsaw.
1.Owners often encounter oil leaks, which usually lubricates the chain. It is necessary to remove the flywheel of the chainsaw Shtil 180 carburetor from the chainsaw. This may be a consequence of poor tightness at the connection points between the hose from the oil tank and the pump.
To remove this problem, the tool should be completely disassembled. Then you need to check the connections and, if necessary, replace the hose with a high-quality analogue.
If you cannot purchase a new hose, you should remove the old one and degrease the landing site and the hose itself. Then you need to install self-tightening clamps, which firmly ensure the tightness of the connections. This approach will solve this problem.
In addition, it is recommended to check and clean the oil filter.

Here I tell and show the proportion of mixing oil and gasoline for the Shtil MS 180 chainsaw. I not only tell you, but also show you. Thus, during operation, a vacuum is formed in the fuel tank, which affects the fuel supply. This may occur due to an unadjusted carburetor, a clogged carburetor, or a clogged air filter.
To correct the problem, you should repair the valve, which equalizes the pressure when fuel is supplied. To do this, the breather should be carefully cleaned with a needle.
To adjust the carburetor, you need to use three screws - the highest and lowest speeds. The adjustment should be carried out strictly according to the instructions for repairing the chainsaw.

Carburetor Shtil 180, we will look at its repair in more detail. To do this, you should clean the filter mesh and channels, and also check the integrity of the membrane.
Remember that the carburetor is a very complex device, since it consists of many small parts, so cleaning and disassembling it should be approached very responsibly.
If you want your saw to work properly, you should regularly care for it. Do not forget to regularly clean the air filter and lubricate the tool chain only with clean oil. When storing the tool for a long time, be sure to remove gasoline and chain oil from it. Then the saw will serve you for a very long time.
Principle of operation
The main unit of the system is the pump. The principle of its operation is the following. As the engine speed increases, a gear mounted on the main shaft drives the pump shaft through a worm gear. In turn, the rotation of the shaft creates a certain pressure in the oil line, which forces the oil to move along it towards the tire.

Chainsaw Partner 350 – malfunctions and their elimination
Failures of Partner garden tools can occur for various reasons, the most common of which are improper operation and mechanical shock. To eliminate the malfunction, you will need to determine its exact cause in advance. After this, you can begin repairing the instrument yourself.
Chainsaw Partner 350 starts and stalls
There may be several reasons for this malfunction. Most often, the engine of the tool starts and immediately stalls due to a clogged factory breather, as a result of which fuel does not enter the engine cylinder in sufficient quantity for operation. To fix the damage, you will need to remove and clean the breather. If it is damaged, then it will need to be replaced.
Another reason is the missing connection between the spark plug and the electrical wiring cap. This can happen due to mechanical shock or the formation of carbon deposits from engine oil on the spark plug. To repair the Partner 350 chainsaw, the spark plug will need to be removed and cleaned. In some cases, completely replacing the spark plug may help.
The third reason for the malfunction is that the standard muffler of the chain saw is severely clogged. Over time, carbon deposits form on its walls, which prevents exhaust from leaving the engine. As a result, gases accumulate inside the engine and interfere with its proper operation. To fix the damage, you need to remove the muffler and clean it with compressed air. You will also need to disassemble the engine and bleed its cylinder.
Chainsaw Partner 350 will not start - how to fix the problem?
When this breakdown is detected, the first thing that needs to be inspected is the condition of the air filter. If a large amount of dust has accumulated on it, the filter will need to be washed using clean gasoline.
Another common cause of malfunction is problems with the ignition system. To repair the chain saw, you need to remove its left protective cover and set the correct clearance between the flywheel and the ignition coil.
In some cases, replacing the fuel mixture will help solve the problem. To do this, you will need to drain the used fuel and fill the tank with a new mixture of pure gasoline and motor oil.
What to do if the chain on the Partner 350 chainsaw is not lubricated?
If the chain for the Partner 350 chainsaw is no longer lubricated with oil, this can lead to overheating of the bar and rupture of the saw set. Ignoring this problem also risks increasing the load on the engine, which can lead to engine failure.
The first thing you need to inspect if there is no lubrication on the chain is the oil pump. Over time, the teeth on its drive wear out, which can also occur due to clogging of the pump. It is usually impossible to restore the element, so it is best to replace it.
Often, lubricant does not reach the chain of the Partner 350 chainsaw due to clogged oil pipes. In this case, the hoses will need to be replaced by treating the joints with the fittings with sealant.
Fills a candle on a Partner 350 chainsaw
This common problem is encountered by chainsaw owners who add too much motor oil to the fuel mixture. It does not have time to burn in the cylinder, so part of the lubricant settles on the spark plug and other important elements of the garden tool.
To fix the breakdown, you need to remove the factory spark plug, clean it of carbon deposits and dry it. After this, you need to blow out the cylinder of the factory chainsaw engine by sharply pulling the starter cable several times.
Next, you need to inspect the condition of the carburetor and fuel hoses. Often oil gets on the spark plug due to loss of tightness of the system. This occurs as a result of a break in one of the tubes or a breakdown of the oil pump. To repair a Partner 350 chainsaw, you will need to replace all faulty fuel system parts. After this, you need to install the spark plug in place, start the engine of the tool and check its operation at idle, low and high speeds.
One of the important chainsaw systems, without which work is impossible, is the forced lubrication system of the chainsaw chain. It's no secret that when the saw is running, the chain rubs against the chainsaw bar, which causes it to heat up and cause premature wear. To soften friction, the chain mechanism must be constantly lubricated.
STIHL MS 180 oil supply repair
Owners of this model of tool should be prepared for the fact that they may encounter such an unpleasant moment as a leak of oil to lubricate the chain. Oil can leak out while working with the tool and even when it is just lying idle.
What is the reason for this phenomenon? The fact is that oil leaks due to leaks in the area where the hose from the oil tank and the pump connects.
Interesting! Another article about oil supply repair is here!
In order to solve the STIHL MS 180 problem associated with the oil supply, it is advisable to disassemble the device.
Solution to the problem:
- Check the hose, if it is damaged, replace it with another one. Or try degreasing the hose, rinsing it, and putting it on sealant, it should work.
- Check the filter oil for damage, clean it (if you filled in waste oil)
- It may also be due to a clogged priming, which creates a vacuum in the fuel tank and affects the fuel supply. The problem may be in the adjustment of the carburetor and the channels, or the air filter, may be clogged; you need to thoroughly clean the filter and carburetor channels.
In general, the main problem is due to bad oil.
It is not recommended to pour oil into a chainsaw that is not intended!
What kind of oil to fill for the Stihl 180 chainsaw (stihl 180)
- Don't spare money on original oil. Stihl HP 2-stroke oil costs a little more, but cleaning costs even more.
- You need to pour high-quality fuel into the fuel, you can use Mobil 1, and three-phase is suitable for lubrication; under no circumstances should you pour waste oil into it.
- Of the inexpensive options, mineral oil is 15-40, in winter 10-30. You can use M8, for example, or M10.
Remember personal safety when working with a chainsaw.
Remember that the performance of the chainsaw is affected by the quality of the oil being poured. Poor quality oil can cause the tool to operate ineffectively and adversely affect its parts.
To ensure that the STIHL MS 180 oil pump delivers oil without difficulty, check and clean the pump periodically. Thus, the oil supply process will be normal.
Carburetor STIHL MS-180
The STIHL MS-180 carburetor is equipped with one idle speed adjustment screw. The full load jet is not adjustable, meaning it cannot be changed.
You need to know the basic rules for setting the idle speed:
1) check the air filter, if necessary, change it;
2) check the spark-proof grille, if necessary, change or clean it. You can then turn on the engine and then warm it up.
STIHL MS 180 carburetor repair
Repairing a STIHL MS 180 carburetor is a very difficult process. Note that during repairs there is practically no risk of sudden changes in the cylinder-piston group.
If the chainsaw does not start, then follow these steps:
1) open and close the gas tank cap;
2) it is advisable to remove the candle and then dry it;
3) ventilate the combustion chamber.
If after this there are no positive results, then it is better to check the condition of the air filter, the gasoline supply process and the functioning of the spark plug.
This problem is associated with a valve (slepun), which becomes clogged, and as a result a vacuum is formed. To eliminate this inconvenience, you need to clean the valve (slepun) with a needle.
Systematically check the filter; if the muffler is clogged, the device will not be able to deliver the power that is put into it.
If the chainsaw was purchased with a warranty (as a rule, there is no other option), immediately take it to the service center.
Thus, the STIHL MS 180 chainsaw is very easy to use, has good ergonomics and a number of significant advantages.
Lubricant selection criteria
After purchasing the device, the question may arise about choosing oil to fill the Stihl chainsaw. After all, proper care of equipment increases its performance and saves you from all kinds of breakdowns. The performance of the saw directly depends on the use of good fuel and lubricant.
Stihl chainsaws have a carburetor two-stroke engine and 2 tanks (gasoline and oil). To choose the right oil for a Stihl saw, you need to know its criteria:
- It is necessary to determine the manufacturer , because in domestic models they use simple oils (for motorcycles) in a ratio of 1 to 25, and foreign ones use branded lubricant products in a ratio of 1 to 40 (proportions of oil to gasoline). In fact, the owners themselves determine which one to use. You should be prepared that improper use will result in a decrease in power and productivity. Most people use motor oil; if not, then transmission oil. Experts advise using the latter for this manufacturer.
- You need to know the color. For chainsaws with a two-stroke engine, red, green, and blue colors are suitable.
- Compound.
Lubrication system design
Depending on the brand of chainsaw, the parts of the lubrication system may vary slightly in design, but their total number and connection diagram remain the same.
The main components of the lubrication system are:
- an oil tank located, as a rule, in the engine crankcase.
- The filter element is installed in the tank.
- The oil line is a small diameter hose made of oil-resistant rubber.
- The heart of the system is the oil pump.
- The worm gear transmits force from the engine to the pump.
- The chainsaw tire can also be considered an element of the lubrication system, since it has special holes for supplying oil. By the way, the chain itself is involved in transporting oil and, accordingly, also has some elements designed specifically to provide lubrication.
Principle of operation
The main unit of the system is the pump. The principle of its operation is as follows. As engine speed increases, a gear mounted on the main shaft drives the pump shaft through a worm gear. In turn, the rotation of the shaft creates a certain pressure in the oil line, which forces the oil to move along it towards the tire.
The end of the oil channel is located at the point of contact of the tire with the tool housing, where there is a longitudinal groove into which, when installing the tire, its oil channel falls.
The groove is necessary to ensure the supply of oil to the bar, regardless of the degree of tension of the chainsaw chain. Simply put, no matter what position the tire is in at the time of operation, oil will get onto it through the groove.
Next, the lubrication process includes a chain, on the links of which, depending on the chain model, there is either a groove or a hole through which the oil is dispersed throughout the tire. As engine speed increases, the oil flow rate also increases.
Some models of chainsaws are equipped with pumps that additionally have capacity adjustment, and if necessary, the amount of oil supplied by the lubrication system can be increased or decreased.
This function is quite convenient, because it allows you to save money and not waste extra oil.
Basic malfunctions and repairs of the chain lubrication system
Let's look at common malfunctions and repairs of the chain lubrication system of modern chainsaws.
If the chain is not lubricated
The tank is full, but the oil does not flow to the chainsaw chain. There could be several sources of the problem here.
Oil pump drive failure. Quite a common malfunction. On Stihl chainsaws, it is common to cut off the flange of the plastic drive gear. Or the splines are worn out. The gear does not rotate at all or rotates but does not engage the pump drive. Clogged lines. Observed when using unsuitable oil, including waste oil. Violation of the tightness of the tank, rubber tube or line connections
In addition to mechanical damage to the integrity of the oil channels (a tube coming off its seat, a crack in the tank or in another part of the line), sometimes the lubricant supply hose is destroyed under the influence of aggressive synthetic oils. Please note So which chainsaw chain oil is best? In this case, the answer is clear: the best solution would be to purchase lubricants from the equipment manufacturer.
Incorrect adjustment of the lubricant supply to the chain. With unqualified intervention, you can completely shut off the supply of lubricant to the chain using the adjusting screw.
Oil pump
Pump failure
This problem occurs extremely rarely and mainly on cheap saws from little-known Chinese manufacturers. For example, on Stihl chainsaws the oil pump has such a service life that, according to statistics, there are practically no cases of its replacement due to breakdown. Most often, the pump is simply cleaned of contaminants by regular blowing.
Uneven supply of lubricant
The chain receives too much or too little lubricant. When oil does not flow to the chain or is poured too much, it causes discomfort during operation and can damage the saw. This problem is a little less common, but also quite widespread. There may be several reasons.
Leaking lubrication system pipe
- Incorrect adjustment. It is better not to touch the oil supply adjustment screw on some saws without understanding the adjustment process.
- Use of lubricants of unsuitable viscosity. The pump pumps lubricants that are too thick less readily, and they are less easily distributed by the chain along the tire. With liquid oils the opposite is true.
- Reduced tightness in the chain lubrication system. Sometimes the oil supply tube to the pump comes off or is damaged. This causes oil starvation. A similar problem manifests itself in lubricant leaks at the bottom of the chainsaw.
Practical recommendations
Lubrication hole layout.
Before you start using chainsaws, you need to check the lubrication system of the chainsaw chain. For this purpose, it is necessary to hold the end of the tire by placing a sheet of paper under it. When the speed increases, an oily strip should form on the sheet.
Proper lubrication of the chain greatly increases the life of the chainsaw headset. If there is not enough oil, the device will operate dry. The cutting set will quickly break. The friction of the parts should be minimal, so all guides and hinge joints should be covered with an oily film.
When the chain moves along the guide bar, the lubrication system must provide a constant flow of oil. This function is performed by the oil pump. With its help, the required amount of oil is supplied to the guide bar and its groove.
The driving links of the chain spread oil over the total length of the groove. A guarantee of proper chain lubrication is considered to be:
- fine tuning of the oil pump;
- completely filled oil tank;
- correct choice of oil.
Before starting work, it is necessary to constantly monitor the operation of the lubrication system. The correct supply of lubricant is determined by the sides of the chain; they must be lubricated at all times.
Basic parameters of a chainsaw chain.
The need for lubricants is always different. It all depends on what needs to be cut. When the length of the cut reaches large values, the tree has high hardness and thick bark, it is necessary to have a large supply of oil.
If the cutting set smokes or the chain stops, we can talk about a lot of heating. The main reason is lack of lubrication. Other reasons may be:
- dullness of the chain;
- strong tension.
