Battery for MTZ (models “80” and “82”): how to choose the best

Choosing a battery for MTZ 80 - which one to buy?

So, usually 3ST-215M marking devices are installed on tractor models MTZ 80 and 82.

6 Volt batteries with a capacity of 215 Ah last a long time and rarely fail. As a rule, 2 similar batteries are used for the MTZ tractor, which in turn are connected in series. If we consider updated modifications of agricultural machinery, for example, MTZ 80 L or MTZ 82 L, then we advise you to pay attention to one 12 volt battery with several blocks of different capacities.

The elements are also connected in parallel.

The main advice when buying a battery is that when choosing, take into account the type of your engine and the operating characteristics of the tractor in winter and summer.

The MTZ battery markings always indicate the following information: capacity, temperature conditions, maximum voltage. As a rule, for standard MTZ 80, 82 batteries, a voltage of 12 Volts is enough. The capacity parameter depends on the modification of the vehicle engine.

That is, for the D240, D 243 engines (MTZ 80, 82 tractors) we buy a battery with an increased capacity; for engines D 240 l, 243 l you can choose a capacity of 50 Ah. When purchasing an item, also take into account the availability of a quality guarantee from the seller, as well as the service life of the components.

Service details

The most vulnerable part of the battery is the blocks of lead-antimony plates. To protect them from destruction, achieve a stable voltage and deliver optimal discharge current, an electrolyte of a specific density is required. The nominal capacity determined by the manufacturer is 1.27 g/cm3. However, taking into account the climate and season, this parameter varies. The lower the ambient temperature, the more dense the electrolyte should be (about 1.29–1.31). Conversely, in the hot season the indicator ranges from 1.21 to 1.23 g/cm3.

When measuring density, a special device is used - a hydrometer. It should be used in relation to a charged battery several hours after disconnecting from the power supply. Density readings after turning on or adding liquid are often inaccurate.

You should also take into account the correction for such a concept as electrolyte temperature. When it is above the mark of 15 degrees, the hydrometer indicators increase the value; if it is lower, they decrease it accordingly. To determine the amendments, there is a special table that can be found on the Internet or equipment operating manuals.

The battery needs daily inspection. During this procedure, you need to clean it from dust, combustion products or oil. The battery should definitely be wiped if acid gets on it. Among the care measures:

  • inspection of the body for integrity;
  • checking the terminals to see if they are oxidized;
  • monitoring the cleanliness of ventilation holes in traffic jams;
  • taking into account the liquid (electrolyte) level. If it is low, then add distillate.

Batteries for MTZ 82: characteristics, diagnostics, maintenance

The main functions of the battery are to provide electrical power for the operation of the electric starter in the starting system and maintain electrical voltage in the machine network. The manufacturer installs batteries that correspond to the power consumption of the electrical components of the machine, as well as in accordance with the generated power to charge it. MTZ 82(80) are equipped with 12 and 6 volt acid batteries and their characteristics depend on the method of starting the diesel engine. Tractors of this brand, depending on the configuration, have two starting systems: the first is direct starting of the diesel engine with an electric starter; the second - with a starting gasoline engine PD 10 in the modification of the MTZ 80L, MTZ 82L tractor.

Why is a second battery needed?

There are many areas of application for a second battery:

  1. Ensuring the operation of additional electrical appliances necessary for a comfortable pastime in nature (for example, such as a refrigerator, lighting fixtures, musical equipment).
  2. A vehicle equipped with an electric winch must in any case be equipped with a peripheral battery.
  3. Executive class vehicles are, by default, equipped with a video player, TV, coffee maker, microwave and other electrical appliances that provide increased comfort when traveling.
  4. Security video surveillance systems, anti-theft systems, all kinds of radio alarms, as well as devices designed for active vehicle protection, must also be equipped with their own separate battery.

Characteristics of batteries for MTZ 80(82)

To carry out electric starting of the diesel tractor MTZ 82(80), the manufacturer of the machine is standardly equipped with two parallel-connected 12-volt 6ST88 batteries with a capacity of each battery of 88 ampere/hour with a starting discharge current of 850 ampere. Early modifications of the tractor are equipped with two 6-volt batteries 3 ST 215 EM with a capacity of 215 amperes/hour and a discharge current of 645 amperes, which, when connected in series, also provide a voltage of 12 volts. For electric starting of the tractor starting engine, a 12-volt 6TST 50 battery with a capacity of 50 ampere/hour and a discharge current of 150 ampere is sufficient.

Battery capacity is the amount of electrical energy that can be obtained with a continuous 20-hour discharge and an electrolyte temperature of 18-27˚C to the appropriate voltage for a twelve-volt battery up to 10.5V and a six-volt battery up to 5.25V.

The indicator of the maximum discharge starting current of the starter mode in the battery characteristics is important for operation in a situation of high resistance to rotation of the starter when cranking a cold engine. At this moment, a peak increase in current consumption by the starter occurs to develop a powerful rotation impulse, which is of great importance for trouble-free, reliable engine starting at subzero air temperatures.

Selection of battery for MTZ 82

You must purchase batteries with the seller's warranty for replacement in case of premature failure of the equipment. Products must be confirmed by certificates of conformity and quality certificates. Considering the difficult operating conditions, when choosing a unit, pay attention to wear resistance criteria: strength of the housing walls, resistance to vibration, number of charge and discharge cycles.

Based on the technical characteristics of the batteries installed by the manufacturer and the tractor's electrical network voltage of 12 volts, when choosing batteries for MTZ 82, the following indicators are sufficient:

For parallel connectionFor serial connection
The total capacity of two 12-volt batteries must correspond to 170 to 220 ampere/hour with a discharge current of at least 850 AmpereTwo 6-volt batteries with a capacity of 215 ampere/hour and a discharge current of at least 645 ampere.

When connected in parallel, the capacity of an individual battery does not matter, since the total capacity is important. That is, in a parallel connection you can use batteries of different capacities with a voltage of 12 volts, achieving a total indicator of at least 170 ampere hours. When connected in series, the capacity of each battery must be the same to ensure uniform charging of the connected batteries.

Battery diagnostics

The battery should always be close to fully charged. Batteries with a discharge of more than 50% in summer and more than 25% in winter must be urgently charged. The charge level is checked at least once a quarter or when difficulty starting the engine occurs.

Checking charging by electrolyte density

Diagnosis of the battery condition is carried out by checking the density indicator, which determines the degree of charge. The density is determined by a device - a hydrometer in the form of a glass tube with a rubber bulb for sucking up liquid and a float with a scale placed in the interior.

Table of changes in electrolyte density depending on the charge level.

Electrolyte density when the battery is fully chargedLow battery

1.281.241.21
1.261.221.18
1.241.201.16
1.221.181.14

When measuring density, it must be taken into account that the normal difference in readings between banks should not exceed 0.02 g/cm3. You also need to understand that as the temperature decreases, the density indicator increases and decreases when it increases. A change in temperature of 1˚C gives a difference in density of 0.0007 g/cm3.

For normal battery operation, the electrolyte density for different climatic zones and seasons when fully charged should have the following values:

Climate zonesSeasonElectrolyte density at a temperature of 15˚С
PouredWhen fully charged
Sharply continental zone with winter temperatures below -40˚Сwinter1.291.31
summer1.251.27
Northern zone with winter temperatures up to 40˚Сall year round1.271.29
Zone with winter temperatures down to -30˚С
year round
1.251.27
South zone

1.231.25

To control the electrolyte level, use a glass tube with marked marks. The liquid column is fixed by clamping the opposite end of the device with a finger. By comparing the scale of the length of the filled part of the tube, the electrolyte level in a separate battery bank is determined.

Checking the condition of the battery by measuring voltage

The condition of the battery can also be determined by measuring the voltage. The measurement can be carried out with a voltmeter or under load using a load fork, which indicates the state of the unit in direct engine start mode. Readings under load are taken after 5 seconds after connecting the device.

Voltage failure in the on-board electrical network after turning on the ground switch

To diagnose such a breakdown you need to:

  1. Check for contacts.
  2. Fuse F1 is located on the motor. You need to make sure that it is not damaged.
  3. Make sure the circuit is intact.
  4. There is no charge when the engine starts.

To eliminate this type of breakdown, it is necessary to carry out the following diagnostics:

  1. Check the generator drive belt and adjust its tension.
  2. Avoiding breakage of fuse F1.
  3. Measure the voltage of the generator (the correct value is 13.2–14.1 W in the “Warm” position of the climate control screw, and 14.2–15.2 V in the “Cold” position);
  4. With the engine idling and the headlights on, check the contacts.
  5. The battery is constantly not fully charged.

To quickly determine why the battery does not charge to 100%, you need to:

  1. Measure the voltage value. If the indicator is lower than required, you need to switch the climate control screw to the “Cold” position. If this does not help, replace the integrated voltage regulator.
  2. Make sure the battery is in working condition.
  3. Make sure that the contacts that go from the generator to the battery are in working condition. In this case, it is worth removing oxidation of the contacts, which can cause unnecessary resistance.
  4. The starter produces low speed during the starting process.

In order to diagnose a starter failure, you must:

1. Make sure the power circuit terminals are in working order

  • The terminals do not fit tightly on the battery.
  • Check the location of the terminal and the battery phase.
  • Check the operating condition of the power release and release lever.
  • Check the integrity of all operating circuits connecting the starter and battery.

2. Avoid discharge of devices

The traction relay works (you can hear the sound of it turning on), but the engine does not start using the starter. In this case, the fixing light on the tractor instrument panel works intermittently or flashes periodically.

  1. It is necessary to inspect the starter contacts. If traces of oxidation are visible on them, clean them. The drive system also requires adjustment.
  2. Check the functionality of the starter commutator unit.

Which starter is better to install on MTZ: review of the best starters for different tractors, how to choose

A reliable tractor that starts with half a turn at any time of the year is the dream of every driver. In fact, harsh operating conditions (rain, dust, dirt) and negative temperatures negatively affect the reliability of special equipment. Which starter is better to install on MTZ 80, 82, 1221 and others, so as not to have problems with the plant? Which starter to choose - conventional or gearbox? Which starter is the best for MTZ - Belarusian, Chinese or European? We will discuss the answers to all questions regarding the choice of starter for MTZ tractors further in the article.

What is an MTZ electrical circuit?

Let's look at what the electrical equipment diagram of a Minsk tractor consists of. One of the advantages of Minsk technology is the use of high-quality electrical wiring, based on the fact that metal parts are designed to act as mass. The advantages of such electrical wiring MTZ-1221, 80 or 82 include:

  • reduced number of wires;
  • simplified approach to maintenance.

But you need to take into account that wiring requires constant care and monitoring.

This will help monitor the serviceability of the wires, their insulation, and the reliability of the fastenings. If damage to the electrical circuit of the MTZ-80 or 1221 tractor is not detected in time, a fire, insulation damage, failure of electrical circuits, etc. may occur.

Let's look at the electrical equipment of Belarus tractors and a description of its operation. The electrical circuit of MTZ-1221, 80 or 82 has the following characteristics:

  • It has a polyvinyl chloride colored surface with low voltage.
  • Additional elements are connecting panels, connectors, and wires that can be mounted in bundles. For example, such a half-move is applied to wires in MTZ-82.
  • The PS 300A-100 socket is located on the rear wall of the operator's cabin and has 7 contacts.
  • The socket is intended for all work where electricity is needed, including when transporting goods.
  • Connection to the socket is made via a plug.
  • If the need arises, you can connect the wiring harness from other units. Both the plug and the socket have special markings that help you understand where the wires are connected.

Thus, the wiring of MTZ-80, 82 and 1221 is functional and is designed to withstand loads while the tractor is operating.

What kind of starter is installed on MTZ 80 and 82 from the factory?

Which starter MTZ comes with from the factory depends on the modification and year of manufacture of the tractor. Modern tractors of the 80 and 82 families are equipped with an ST-212A 12V 3708.10 starter, the power of which is up to 3 kW. It is powered by two 12/88 3703.16 batteries.

On older modifications of MTZ 80 and 82 tractors you can find different versions of the same starter from different manufacturers. Power varies in the range of 3-3.5 kW. The most common are ST-212A starters produced by Iskra, BATE, Katek, KZATE and others.

Before it, a starter ST 142M produced by BATE with a power of 3.5 kW was installed.

In the catalogs you can find different variations of ST-212-3703 starters, but not all of them are suitable for MTZ tractors. For these tractors, a starter with the index “A” is suitable - ST-212A. Similar models with other indexes have an excellent configuration and will not fit on the Belarusian 80 and 82 series engine.

Which starter is better for MTZ - gearbox or conventional?

The question of which starter is better on the MTZ 80 – geared or conventional – always opens up heated debates, since both the direct-acting design and the geared one that uses magnets have their adherents and opponents.

The classic starter on MTZ tractors (ST-212A) transmits movement to the flywheel crown through a lever. It, in turn, is driven by a traction relay, which is held in the desired position by a double coil winding.

The mechanism of operation of a gear starter is similar - it also converts the electrical energy consumed from the battery into mechanical energy. But it has only one winding, magnets are installed and there is a gearbox.

Let's compare regular and gear starters and find out which one is better to install on MTZ.

Regular starterGear starter
Size and weightmoreless
Maintainabilityhigh, easy to repairaverage, more difficult to repair
Availability of spare partsYou can buy almost any spare parts for a regular starter separately, they are inexpensiveFinding suitable parts for a gear starter is more difficult; it often has to be replaced entirely
Lifetimesmall, parts have high mechanical wearlong lasting (lasts 2-3 times longer)
Electricity consumptionhighlow (30-40% less)
Starting in sub-zero temperaturesdoes not work well in the cold; in winter or in northern regions it is recommended to install a launcherstarts the engine stably in moderate frosts (up to -20 degrees), in severe frosts it is recommended to additionally use antifreeze heating or place a blowtorch under the pan
Priceaveragehigh (1.5-2 times higher than classic starters)
Quality and reliabilitystarters are produced by several manufacturers, their quality is known and remains stableThe market is filled with fake low quality gear starters, the product must be carefully checked before purchasing

Most tractor drivers, when choosing which starter is better - geared or conventional, will choose a geared model. All other things being equal, they work more economically and efficiently, are better protected from dirt and dust, are less likely to fail and are able to start the engine at low temperatures without any problems.

It is better to install a regular starter at MTZ if you do not use special equipment every day, live in the southern regions where there are no severe frosts, and are calm about overhauling and repairs. In this case, the standard factory starter ST-212A or similar direct-acting models will be a more profitable and affordable option.

Which starter should be installed at MTZ, choosing among direct-acting electric motors? First of all, pay attention to the reliability of a particular model (for example, many owners call Iskra starters unsuccessful). All other things being equal, it is better to install a starter with the highest starting power on the tractor.

Which gear starter is better at MTZ

Now let's move on to talking about which starter is best to choose for Belarusian tractors among geared models.

If you are thinking which gear starter is better to install on MTZ, then choose one of the options presented in the table.

Czech Magneton starters enjoy the greatest confidence among buyers. Their advantages include impeccable build quality and full compliance with the declared characteristics, and not all manufacturers can boast of this. The only disadvantages of Magneton include the high price (when compared with products from other brands with similar technical characteristics) and a large number of fakes.

An equally good solution would be to supply a starter from Slovak, a manufacturer from Slovakia whose products are widely represented on the market. The main difference between these starters is the use of innovative and non-standard technical solutions in their design, which make it possible to reduce costs, better protect the unit from atmospheric influences, and operate stably even in very severe frosts. Which starter to install on MTZ from the Slovak model range depends on your financial capabilities and the operating characteristics of the tractor. But if opportunities allow, it is better to buy a starter with the highest starting power.

Internal structure

MTZ 80, MTZ 82 - models 1 and 2 of the Belarus line, common models of modern tractors, have several identical 2V class batteries connected in a series circuit. The most common type is lead acid batteries. This model is characterized by the presence of lead plates; the electrolyte is made on the basis of acid with the addition of distilled water. The quantity and quality of liquids must comply with all types of GOST standards. Batteries MTZ 80, MTZ 82 are located inside the cabin, there is a special battery compartment. Series-connected batteries ZST-215EM, modifications MTZ-80L and MTZ-82L have only one battery 6ST-60EMS. However, the total number of batteries remains the same. Let us remind you that batteries are often called not the batteries themselves, but the ratio of the electrodes. Each battery connected in series has three batteries, 6CT has six at once.

A completely new modification, the latest version of MTZ 82 allows you to install two 6ST, connected in series. Due to the high power consumption, there are a number of technical recommendations for the installation and operation of this type of battery. The presence of this battery is due to the innovative solution to use a diesel engine in conjunction with a starter. These batteries produce a power of fifty amperes/hour. The starter of these models is low-power, so high current is an unnecessary luxury; the available consumption values are quite sufficient.

  • The total capacity is equal to ninety-five milliamperes/hour, allowing for very high total power for the tractor.
  • The voltage at the terminals remains for a very long time. The electrolyte works completely calmly even at a temperature of minus eighteen degrees, delivering maximum power to the starter that starts the internal combustion engine. Even thickened diesel fuel starts up quite easily due to the strong, powerful current supply.
  • Euro class terminals are conveniently suitable for all types of devices. That is why it is recommended to buy only domestic analogues, bypassing the cheaper Asian market.
  • Straight polarity, bottom mounting type.

The 3ST modification is simpler, the calculation is 6 volts, two hundred and fifteen milliamps/hour, so two similar units are connected in series at once, because the tractor's electrical wiring is designed for twelve volts, so a voltage twice as high is required.
