The MTZ tractor, in other words called “Belarus”, is a unique structure of the Minsk Tractor Manufacturing Plant, produced since the seventies of the last century. Having undergone processing and restyling, this type of arable indestructible metal horse has become more improved. The heavyweight relies on a decent battery to ensure good, uninterrupted operation of the powerful internal combustion engine.
The battery accumulates electrical energy during operation. For more modern MTZ models, high-quality energy flow is most important. New units have a more advanced electrical circuit to support basic air conditioning systems, help start a stronger starter, have the strength to pull heavier loads, trailers, and perform the function of tractors.
Choosing a battery for MTZ 80 - which one to buy?
So, usually 3ST-215M marking devices are installed on tractor models MTZ 80 and 82.
6 Volt batteries with a capacity of 215 Ah last a long time and rarely fail. As a rule, 2 similar batteries are used for the MTZ tractor, which in turn are connected in series. If we consider updated modifications of agricultural machinery, for example, MTZ 80 L or MTZ 82 L, then we advise you to pay attention to one 12 volt battery with several blocks of different capacities.
The elements are also connected in parallel.
The main advice when buying a battery is that when choosing, take into account the type of your engine and the operating characteristics of the tractor in winter and summer.
The MTZ battery markings always indicate the following information: capacity, temperature conditions, maximum voltage. As a rule, for standard MTZ 80, 82 batteries, a voltage of 12 Volts is enough. The capacity parameter depends on the modification of the vehicle engine.
That is, for the D240, D 243 engines (MTZ 80, 82 tractors) we buy a battery with an increased capacity; for engines D 240 l, 243 l you can choose a capacity of 50 Ah. When purchasing an item, also take into account the availability of a quality guarantee from the seller, as well as the service life of the components.

Features of choice
Tractor equipment is subject to severe stress, and this load is especially associated with seasonal work. Today, “Belarus” is multifunctional: it pulls various trailers, grain processing mechanisms, develops sufficient speeds, and performs the functions of a tractor, transporting cargo. That is why functionality often determines battery strength. Important aspects are climatic conditions, timing of work performed, and type of internal combustion engine. Domestic manufacturers of analog batteries always indicate the battery capacity, maximum voltage, and possible temperature conditions. The most important information on MTZ tractors is that the total battery voltage should be twelve volts.
An important aspect of long-term productive battery life is the density of the electrolyte. It is thanks to the correct choice of density that platinum has the proper working condition, produces a stable voltage, and holds the required charge level. The climatic zones of MTZ operation, naturally, leave an imprint on the choice of electrolyte density. Lower temperature conditions require higher densities. An interesting fact: if diesel fuel becomes thicker at sub-zero temperatures, ensuring worse performance of the internal combustion engine, the denser electrolyte, on the contrary, plays a more positive role, starting the starter faster and more actively.
Plowing work is a very dirty task, so it is better to check the external condition of the battery every day, no matter what method, the simplest is a visual inspection. A competent driver always carries out daily cleaning of dirt and dust, cleans oxidized terminals, and wipes spilled electrolyte with clean rags soaked in ammonia. The ventilation of the plugs must maintain proper quality; there should be no cracks or chips. The technical inspection is more in-depth; the presence of electrolyte is checked and, if necessary, distilled water is added.
In winter, it is necessary to charge the battery on time. During this period, the fuel thickens, making starting more difficult, increasing the load on the starter, so the battery works more hard.
Batteries for MTZ 82: characteristics, diagnostics, maintenance
The main functions of the battery are to provide electrical power for the operation of the electric starter in the starting system and maintain electrical voltage in the machine network. The manufacturer installs batteries that correspond to the power consumption of the electrical components of the machine, as well as in accordance with the generated power to charge it. MTZ 82(80) are equipped with 12 and 6 volt acid batteries and their characteristics depend on the method of starting the diesel engine. Tractors of this brand, depending on the configuration, have two starting systems: the first is direct starting of the diesel engine with an electric starter; the second - with a starting gasoline engine PD 10 in the modification of the MTZ 80L, MTZ 82L tractor.
Replacing the battery on a T-40
A special battery case is provided to accommodate the battery. That is, there is no need to open the hood and go through other components. In fact, the battery is always easily accessible.
The meaning is this:
- turn off the engine;
- unscrew the fastenings of the battery case;
- remove the clamping element that holds the batteries;
- disconnect the negative terminal, move the wire to the side;
- remove the tip of the positive terminal, also unscrewing the fastener;
- check the condition of the wires, clean them if necessary, treat them with lubricant;
- clean the installation area;
- install a new battery, or a pair of batteries at once, depending on the situation;
- connect the battery, observing the polarity;
- First, attach a positive wire with a tip to the battery terminal;
- then secure the negative terminal.
All that remains is to assemble the design of the battery box. At this point the work is considered completed.
Characteristics of batteries for MTZ 80(82)
To carry out electric starting of the diesel tractor MTZ 82(80), the manufacturer of the machine is standardly equipped with two parallel-connected 12-volt 6ST88 batteries with a capacity of each battery of 88 ampere/hour with a starting discharge current of 850 ampere. Early modifications of the tractor are equipped with two 6-volt batteries 3 ST 215 EM with a capacity of 215 amperes/hour and a discharge current of 645 amperes, which, when connected in series, also provide a voltage of 12 volts. For electric starting of the tractor starting engine, a 12-volt 6TST 50 battery with a capacity of 50 ampere/hour and a discharge current of 150 ampere is sufficient.
Battery capacity is the amount of electrical energy that can be obtained with a continuous 20-hour discharge and an electrolyte temperature of 18-27˚C to the appropriate voltage for a twelve-volt battery up to 10.5V and a six-volt battery up to 5.25V.
The indicator of the maximum discharge starting current of the starter mode in the battery characteristics is important for operation in a situation of high resistance to rotation of the starter when cranking a cold engine. At this moment, a peak increase in current consumption by the starter occurs to develop a powerful rotation impulse, which is of great importance for trouble-free, reliable engine starting at subzero air temperatures.
Technical characteristics of the standard battery
The battery, placed in a special case on the T-40 tractor, is necessary to ensure normal operation of the equipment in the dark and beyond.
T-40 models equipped with a starter were equipped with two batteries of 6 Volts each. They were connected in series. In total, this made it possible to obtain 135 Ah of capacity.
If the equipment was provided with a starter, that is, a starting device for the engine, then it was quite possible to get by with one 12V battery.
The first T-40 models were produced with two 6-volt batteries. To accommodate them, a special box was provided, mounted on the flywheel housing.
Selection of battery for MTZ 82
You must purchase batteries with the seller's warranty for replacement in case of premature failure of the equipment. Products must be confirmed by certificates of conformity and quality certificates. Considering the difficult operating conditions, when choosing a unit, pay attention to wear resistance criteria: strength of the housing walls, resistance to vibration, number of charge and discharge cycles.
Based on the technical characteristics of the batteries installed by the manufacturer and the tractor's electrical network voltage of 12 volts, when choosing batteries for MTZ 82, the following indicators are sufficient:
For parallel connection | For serial connection |
The total capacity of two 12-volt batteries must correspond to 170 to 220 ampere/hour with a discharge current of at least 850 Ampere | Two 6-volt batteries with a capacity of 215 ampere/hour and a discharge current of at least 645 ampere. |
When connected in parallel, the capacity of an individual battery does not matter, since the total capacity is important. That is, in a parallel connection you can use batteries of different capacities with a voltage of 12 volts, achieving a total indicator of at least 170 ampere hours. When connected in series, the capacity of each battery must be the same to ensure uniform charging of the connected batteries.
How to properly charge the battery on the T-40
In general, the charging scheme for a battery installed in a special battery box of the T-40 tractor is not very different from charging other car batteries.
There are a few things to consider here:
- You must first make sure that the battery uses a high-quality electrolyte based on sulfuric battery acid and pure distilled water;
- if it is a dry-charged battery, then it is first filled with an electrolyte mixture;
- Flooded batteries may only be charged 4-6 hours after refueling;
- the battery must be connected to the charger when the electrolyte temperature is no more than 30 degrees;
- The connection diagram of the battery to the charger is standard, observing polarity and safety precautions;
- the charging procedure continues until active gas evolution begins, that is, the electrolyte begins to boil;
- boiling should occur in all jars;
- In parallel with this, the voltage and density parameters during charging remain unchanged for 3 hours.
This indicates that the battery is charged.
A fairly standard circuit used to charge a battery for a Soviet-style T-40 tractor. Although it is worth noting that its assembly continued even after the collapse of the USSR, until 1995.
Battery diagnostics
The battery should always be close to fully charged. Batteries with a discharge of more than 50% in summer and more than 25% in winter must be urgently charged. The charge level is checked at least once a quarter or when difficulty starting the engine occurs.
Checking charging by electrolyte density
Diagnosis of the battery condition is carried out by checking the density indicator, which determines the degree of charge. The density is determined by a device - a hydrometer in the form of a glass tube with a rubber bulb for sucking up liquid and a float with a scale placed in the interior.
Table of changes in electrolyte density depending on the charge level.
Electrolyte density when the battery is fully charged | Low battery
By 25% | By 50% | |
1.30 | 1.26 | 1.22 |
1.28 | 1.24 | 1.21 |
1.26 | 1.22 | 1.18 |
1.24 | 1.20 | 1.16 |
1.22 | 1.18 | 1.14 |
When measuring density, it must be taken into account that the normal difference in readings between banks should not exceed 0.02 g/cm3. You also need to understand that as the temperature decreases, the density indicator increases and decreases when it increases. A change in temperature of 1˚C gives a difference in density of 0.0007 g/cm3.
For normal battery operation, the electrolyte density for different climatic zones and seasons when fully charged should have the following values:
Climate zones | Season | Electrolyte density at a temperature of 15˚С
Poured | When fully charged
Sharply continental zone with winter temperatures below -40˚С | winter | 1.29 | 1.31 |
summer | 1.25 | 1.27 | |
Northern zone with winter temperatures up to 40˚С | all year round | 1.27 | 1.29 |
Zone with winter temperatures down to -30˚С | year round | 1.25 | 1.27 |
South zone | year round | 1.23 | 1.25 |
To control the electrolyte level, use a glass tube with marked marks. The liquid column is fixed by clamping the opposite end of the device with a finger. By comparing the scale of the length of the filled part of the tube, the electrolyte level in a separate battery bank is determined.
Checking the condition of the battery by measuring voltage
The condition of the battery can also be determined by measuring the voltage. The measurement can be carried out with a voltmeter or under load using a load fork, which indicates the state of the unit in direct engine start mode. Readings under load are taken after 5 seconds after connecting the device.

How to charge the battery on a walk-behind tractor?
In order for the battery installed on a walk-behind tractor to last as long as possible, the owner of agricultural machinery should preserve its working life. Following one important rule will help with this. It consists in choosing the optimal air temperature for storing the battery. For most batteries, the normal temperature will be no more than 10 °C. If the battery is stored for a long time at a temperature below this value, this will lead to a decrease in the density of the electrolyte present in the battery and increased wear of the built-in lead plates.
It is necessary to charge the battery at the lowest current level. Many well-known batteries include a fairly powerful charging unit that can fully charge a walk-behind tractor battery in almost 2 hours. But you need to remember that such a short charging period increases battery wear.
Which starter is better to install on MTZ: review of the best starters for different tractors, how to choose
A reliable tractor that starts with half a turn at any time of the year is the dream of every driver. In fact, harsh operating conditions (rain, dust, dirt) and negative temperatures negatively affect the reliability of special equipment. Which starter is better to install on MTZ 80, 82, 1221 and others, so as not to have problems with the plant? Which starter to choose - conventional or gearbox? Which starter is the best for MTZ - Belarusian, Chinese or European? We will discuss the answers to all questions regarding the choice of starter for MTZ tractors further in the article.
What kind of starter is installed on MTZ 80 and 82 from the factory?
Which starter MTZ comes with from the factory depends on the modification and year of manufacture of the tractor. Modern tractors of the 80 and 82 families are equipped with an ST-212A 12V 3708.10 starter, the power of which is up to 3 kW. It is powered by two 12/88 3703.16 batteries.
On older modifications of MTZ 80 and 82 tractors you can find different versions of the same starter from different manufacturers. Power varies in the range of 3-3.5 kW. The most common are ST-212A starters produced by Iskra, BATE, Katek, KZATE and others.
Before it, a starter ST 142M produced by BATE with a power of 3.5 kW was installed.
In the catalogs you can find different variations of ST-212-3703 starters, but not all of them are suitable for MTZ tractors. For these tractors, a starter with the index “A” is suitable - ST-212A. Similar models with other indexes have an excellent configuration and will not fit on the Belarusian 80 and 82 series engine.
Which starter is better for MTZ - gearbox or conventional?
The question of which starter is better on the MTZ 80 – geared or conventional – always opens up heated debates, since both the direct-acting design and the geared one that uses magnets have their adherents and opponents.
The classic starter on MTZ tractors (ST-212A) transmits movement to the flywheel crown through a lever. It, in turn, is driven by a traction relay, which is held in the desired position by a double coil winding.
The mechanism of operation of a gear starter is similar - it also converts the electrical energy consumed from the battery into mechanical energy. But it has only one winding, magnets are installed and there is a gearbox.
Let's compare regular and gear starters and find out which one is better to install on MTZ.
Regular starter | Gear starter
Size and weight | more | less |
Maintainability | high, easy to repair | average, more difficult to repair |
Availability of spare parts | You can buy almost any spare parts for a regular starter separately, they are inexpensive | Finding suitable parts for a gear starter is more difficult; it often has to be replaced entirely |
Lifetime | small, parts have high mechanical wear | long lasting (lasts 2-3 times longer) |
Electricity consumption | high | low (30-40% less) |
Starting in sub-zero temperatures | does not work well in the cold; in winter or in northern regions it is recommended to install a launcher | starts the engine stably in moderate frosts (up to -20 degrees), in severe frosts it is recommended to additionally use antifreeze heating or place a blowtorch under the pan |
Price | average | high (1.5-2 times higher than classic starters) |
Quality and reliability | starters are produced by several manufacturers, their quality is known and remains stable | The market is filled with fake low quality gear starters, the product must be carefully checked before purchasing |
Most tractor drivers, when choosing which starter is better - geared or conventional, will choose a geared model. All other things being equal, they work more economically and efficiently, are better protected from dirt and dust, are less likely to fail and are able to start the engine at low temperatures without any problems.
It is better to install a regular starter at MTZ if you do not use special equipment every day, live in the southern regions where there are no severe frosts, and are calm about overhauling and repairs. In this case, the standard factory starter ST-212A or similar direct-acting models will be a more profitable and affordable option.
Storage Features
In situations where the T-40 tractor is taken out of service and is waiting for the start of work, the battery is removed and sent for storage.
There are several recommendations regarding battery storage:
- charged T-40 batteries filled with electrolyte are recommended to be stored in cool rooms;
- The optimal temperature is considered to be no higher than 0 degrees Celsius;
- in cold conditions, the battery can be stored for about 1.5 years;
- if you keep the battery at room temperature, then the shelf life will be no more than 9 months;
- at room temperature, the battery must be checked at least once a month for the density and temperature of the electrolyte;
- the maximum permissible subzero temperature for storing a tractor battery is up to -30 degrees Celsius;
- if this is an unheated room, then in winter it is also recommended to check the density of the electrolyte and ensure that it does not freeze;
- if there is a risk of freezing of the working mixture, the battery should be temporarily moved to a warm room or put on charge, which will increase the density.
To prevent the electrolyte from freezing in the winter when the tractor is in use, it is recommended to add distilled water to the battery jars if the level drops below normal immediately before leaving.

AZJ124 | Spark | 3 | D-245, D-242, D-60, D-243, D-244 | all MTZ with 4.8 l engines | 12 |
Which starter should be installed at MTZ, choosing among direct-acting electric motors? First of all, pay attention to the reliability of a particular model (for example, many owners call Iskra starters unsuccessful). All other things being equal, it is better to install a starter with the highest starting power on the tractor.

If there is a break in the belt or something with the converter, it lights up. The maximum lifting height of the implement by handle 1 is limited by the adjustable stop 3. The hydraulic system reacts to these changes by raising or lowering the implement to maintain the specified traction force at a constant level.
If the connection of the MTZ 80 voltage converter is made with an error, or the current exceeds 8 Amperes, the device turns off automatically. Tighten bolt 2.
The system is sensitive to changes in traction force caused by changes in soil resistance or tillage depth through the central link of the hitch mechanism. When choosing a battery, you need to focus not only on the size, capacity and brand, but also clearly understand the purpose of the battery and its scope of application.
Mixed regulation - if due to uneven soil density during power regulation it is not possible to achieve a constant working depth, you should limit the increase in depth beyond the set one using the position adjustment handle. The circuit diagram for switching on the HLS pump is shown in Figure 2. If you are thinking which gear starter is better to install on MTZ, then choose one of the options presented in the table.
Czech Magneton starters enjoy the greatest confidence among buyers. Their advantages include impeccable build quality and full compliance with the declared characteristics, and not all manufacturers can boast of this. The only disadvantages of Magneton include the high price (when compared with products from other brands with similar technical characteristics) and a large number of fakes.
An equally good solution would be to supply a starter from Slovak, a manufacturer from Slovakia whose products are widely represented on the market. The main difference between these starters is the use of innovative and non-standard technical solutions in their design, which make it possible to reduce costs, better protect the unit from atmospheric influences, and operate stably even in very severe frosts. Which starter to install on MTZ from the Slovak model range depends on your financial capabilities and the operating characteristics of the tractor. But if opportunities allow, it is better to buy a starter with the highest starting power.
