Massey Ferguson ACTIVA S and BETA combine harvesters for high yields and lower costs

Massey Ferguson combines are considered one of the oldest in the history of existence.
Since 1847, when this brand arose, several dozen different models have been produced. Today, the developments of the last two decades have been combined into the Centora, Activia and Fortia series, which are readily purchased for domestic agricultural production. The constant search for innovation and two-way communication with the consumer have made Massey Ferguson brand products the standard of agricultural engineering.

Features of Moses Ferguson combines

  • unique technology of the threshing and separating device - a longitudinal rotor, which is not found in other brands;
  • predominant use of galvanized parts for better corrosion resistance;
  • uniform supply of cut plant stems and their smooth movement within the machine itself;
  • spacious bunker for long-term operation without shipments;
  • economy in terms of fuels and lubricants;
  • convenient location of engine and chassis components;
  • maintainability - standardized spare parts are still produced for Massey Ferguson models produced in the last century.

To study this issue, AMACO marketers went to two farms located in the south of the Kherson region, talked with representatives of these agricultural enterprises and found out how rice is grown, how profitable this crop is, how it is harvested and how it is then stored.

The first destination was the Ukrainian Rice Elevator LLC, which is located in the south of the Kherson region, near the border with the Crimean Peninsula. This enterprise grows several varieties of rice, which was sown on 1,300 hectares this year - a third of all the farm's crops. Arriving at the field itself, we just found three Massey Ferguson combines at work (two MF 7370 Beta, and one MF Activa 7347S).

As the chief mechanic of Ukrainian Rice Elevator LLC Alexander Alexandrovich Bruyaka , the MF Activa 7347S combine has been working on their fields for the fourth season. We purchased this machine while visiting the agricultural exhibition “AGRO 2012”. We chose a combine harvester with the possibility of using rice equipment for further harvesting of rice.

This year the company decided to purchase two more Massey Ferguson rice harvesters, but this time they decided to try the MF 7370 Beta series. “Currently we have three Massey Ferguson combines working in our rice fields. We have been growing rice for several years now, and, of course, we have tested combines from other manufacturers in our fields. I can say that in terms of their fuel efficiency, the MF Activa 7347S and MF 7370 Beta combines are significantly ahead of machines from other well-known brands. The savings range from approximately 1.5 to 2.0 liters per hectare. And this, as you understand, is significant savings. I can also say that the productivity of the new MF 7370 Beta combine purchased this year when harvesting rice is almost twice as high as that of machines that are already more than four years old. MF 7370 Beta harvests 7-8 hectares per day, while combines from other manufacturers, purchased 4-5 years ago, can only handle 3-4 hectares. Next year we plan to update our fleet of combine harvesters, which have worked for more than 5 years in rice paddies,” said Alexander Alexandrovich.

In general, an enterprise can use one grain harvester on its land for at least 10 seasons. But due to the specific characteristics of the plant itself (rice straw is quite hard and aggressive, which damages the cutting apparatus of the machine), such equipment has to be changed after 5 years.

It turns out that in our time, only three manufacturing companies present combine harvesters with the ability to harvest rice on the Ukrainian market. One of them is the AGCO corporation, which, in addition to tractors, grain combines, loaders, tillage and other trailed equipment, also supplies rice harvesters to Ukraine. This is a type of grain harvesting machine that is used in rice farming for mowing and threshing rice, separating and cleaning grains and then collecting them into a hopper, and collecting straw into stacks. Of course, such a combine can also be used to collect other grains. To do this, just replace the concave and install it on the wheels.

What are the design features of Massey Ferguson tracked harvesters for rice harvesting?

A characteristic feature of all rice harvesters, incl. and the Massey Ferguson brand, is a half-track propulsion unit. This combine is created on the basis of a grain harvester, as a result of which it has similar main components and technological processes, and, of course, is self-propelled.

Free Flow headers installed on the MF 7370 Beta and MF Activa 7347S combines are designed specifically to ensure the operation of machines with a wide range of various technological crops, including rice, and the intensive supply of their mass for threshing. The knife drive of the cutting apparatus is equipped with a Shumacher mechanism, which provides a high frequency of working strokes of the knife and segments, and also facilitates work in difficult conditions.

The powerful reel can be adjusted according to the height of the cutting device depending on the yield, height and degree of lodging of the straw mass, as well as on the state of grain maturity and the strength of its content in the ear. For active work during the capture of a significant mass of rice stalks and feeding them to the cutting device, a volumetric hydraulic motor is used on the platform in the reel drive.

As you know, rice does not form ears, but panicles. And the threshing process itself is more like combing. Therefore, in the MF 7370 Beta and MF Activa 7347S combines, designed for rice harvesting, instead of a threshing drum, which is the basis of the threshing system, a pin drum is used (instead of a threshing drum typical for grain cereals), which is designed for difficult-to-thresh rice panicles with easily damaged grains. Such a drum has transverse bars-pins of a unique design, which “gently” and at a certain interval enter the mass and, thus, actually comb the grain inflorescences of rice. This ensures that the sensitive rice grain is not damaged during threshing.

Rice threshing is carried out by pushing the crop through the adjustable holes of the grid with an uneven cross-section, which in the rear section of the concave are half larger than the hole in the front section, thereby creating an optimal balance between the functions of threshing and moving grain through the drum, the rear of which contains half as many bars as the front . An active concave is located under the beater, which also controls the flow of straw entering the straw walker from the threshing drum. It can be adjusted according to straw length and straw moisture content in order to optimize separation. And additional gear racks are attached under the impact beater.

Both Massey Ferguson combines - the MF 7370 Beta and the MF Activa 7347S - have straw walkers. The largest stroke of the straw walker keys in the segment and increased height of the cascade steps on each key increase separation efficiency and throughput without increasing the overall dimensions of the combine. The straw walker is also four-stage with active walls, which can be additionally equipped with special saddle combs for collecting rice. Adjustable gripping teeth above each of the four straw walker keys provide additional grip, loosening and stretching of the straw. This greatly improves the separation of rice grains, especially for hard and aggressive rice straw.

These rice harvesting machines are equipped with a half-track propulsion system (special replaceable tracks are installed instead of drive wheels), thanks to which the chassis of such a combine provides high maneuverability in waterlogged rice fields, which, as is known, have low throughput capacity.

Due to the way it is grown, rice is in close proximity to water, which is a serious test for the machine. After all, dirt that sticks to the plant itself can easily get into the hopper during harvesting. Therefore, the grain storage components in Massey Ferguson combines are made of stainless, wear-resistant steel.

In addition to three Massey Ferguson combines, the company also operates an MF 8690 tractor, which also convinces with its fuel efficiency. Well, Massey Ferguson machinery is truly economical, which was repeatedly proven during last year’s all-Ukrainian Massey Ferguson tour and the demonstration tour of Massey Ferguson combines, which took place this year. As part of these events, Massey Ferguson 8600 series tractors with various units (Rabe Kormoran plow, harrow, subsoiler, cultivator and seeder of the Challenger and Kockerling brands) were tested in many regions of Ukraine. Hundreds of Ukrainian farmers were able to see with their own eyes how Massey Ferguson equipment works in tandem with seeders and various tillage equipment.

How is rice grown in southern Ukraine?

The second farm where the colleagues ended up was Slavich LLC. A". This enterprise also specializes in growing rice and has been actively engaged in this since 2011, increasing the area of its rice land every year. The farm purchased two Massey Ferguson MF Activa 7347S tracked combines from AMAKO: the first last year, and the second in 2016, especially for the beginning of the rice harvest season. The AMACO team had a unique opportunity to see firsthand how combine harvesters cope with harvesting rice paddies. Dmitry Vladimirovich Fil, manager of Slavich LLC. A" told a lot of interesting things about this culture.

Agricultural enterprise "Slavich. A" has about 2,000 hectares of farmland where wheat, sunflower and rice are grown. 500 hectares are allocated for the latter crop (a quarter of all farm land), but next year farmers plan to sow 1,000 hectares with rice and, most likely, will not stop there. It's no secret that you can make good money on rice. The entire harvest then goes to the internal needs of our country.

In total, 23 thousand hectares are occupied by rice in Ukraine. The expansion of irrigated land in the southern part of the country creates favorable conditions for increasing the area under rice, which is grown in irrigated fields and produces fairly high and stable yields. This crop is promising for Ukrainian agricultural business. It is not for nothing that the entire southern coast of the Kherson (to Crimea) and Odessa regions is occupied by rice cultivation. Everything here contributes to its active growth and development. These include appropriate soil and climatic conditions (soils with a slightly acidic reaction, in particular alluvial soils of river valleys, which retain water well), and a good supply of water resources, which is a critically necessary condition for this plant. Rice is of great agrotechnical importance, because it can be grown on saline and waterlogged soils where other crops do not grow. Due to the desalination of lands under the influence of rice cultivation in crop rotation, other crops can be successfully grown on them.

Dmitry Vladimirovich also spoke about the features of rice sowing, fertilizing, irrigation and about the actual rice growing technology that the farm uses on its land. “As you know, rice is a fairly heat-loving plant. It is grown as a crop that is flooded with a certain layer of water, the high need for which is due to the peculiarities of the development of the root system. Different stages of rice cultivation require different levels of water. Therefore, immediately after sowing, during the period from swelling to swelling of the rice (and this is on average 10-15 days), we flood the field with a 5-10-centimeter level of water for 5 days, after which we drain the water from the checks. In the tillering phase, when stem roots are formed, only a 3-5 cm water level is needed. And already during the exit into the tube and throwing out the panicles, we flood the checks with a water level of 10-12 cm, and a little later we increase the thickness of the layer to 15-20 cm. The plants should be covered to 1/3 of the height. We maintain a 15-centimeter water level until the milky ripeness phase. And already in the wax phase we free the checks from water to dry the soil before harvesting. Therefore, in order to withstand all the growing conditions of this crop, before sowing it is very important to bring the entire rice area into a perfectly flat state with a deviation from the horizontal of ± 5 cm. We divide the field into maps with an area of 20-50 hectares, then each map with transverse shafts into checks area 2-5 hectares. We begin spring processing with harrowing with heavy 7-meter harrows to seal up moisture. Then we level the surface using scrapers and levelers in conjunction with the T-150 tractor. Before sowing, we carry out surface cultivation with cultivators KPS-4, KFKh-3.6 to a loosening depth of 16-18 cm. We sow rice with conventional grain seeders and spreaders, after which we actively roll it. Usually in May we carry out the first chemical treatment with mounted sprayers, after which we fill the checks and feed them. In summer, we carry out spraying and fertilizing by aircraft. We use aerial sprayers to spray crops and apply fertilizers. We start harvesting rice from the end of September to the beginning of December.”

Massey Ferguson ACTIVA S and BETA combine harvesters for high yields and lower costs

Massey Ferguson ACTIVA S and BETA combine harvesters are the embodiment of advanced engineering developments that have already been tested in the fields of agricultural enterprises both in Russia and around the world.

The combines of the Massey Ferguson ACTIVA 7347S and BETA 7370 model range are equipped with a proven 6-cylinder AGCO Power engine, which ensures operation with maximum load while simultaneous economical fuel consumption. The technical advantages of these combine models include a fuel supply system that ensures a flat torque curve. In addition, the machines use drives with a low friction coefficient, and also provide a function for automatic short-term increase in power (Power Boost) up to 30 - 40 hp. (depending on model) to handle maximum loads, including unloading on the go function.

Among the main advantages of Massey Ferguson combines is the presence of significant flexibility in threshing settings. This is achieved through independent adjustment of the gaps at the outlet and inlet of the concave using two electric motors and allows it to be adjusted to any crop. Thanks to the 70% increase in the dead weight of the threshing drum due to the ballast bars, stable operation without clogging is achieved, and the throughput also increases.

An increase in the quality of threshing and economical fuel consumption is also facilitated by the PFR receiving beater in the inclined chamber, which creates a uniform flow of mass from the header to the conveyor. This is especially important in hilly areas. The MCS Plus centrifugal separator performs active residual separation, which helps not to overload the straw walker and reduce grain losses, which is most important in conditions of high humidity and clogging. It is impossible not to mention the exceptional ability of these combines to remove the centrifugal separator from the concave operation in the presence of operating conditions close to ideal, which saves fuel and facilitates the operation of the cleaning system.

Profit directly depends on the quality of work, and in the ACTIVA S and BETA combines this factor is taken into account in a special way. Thus, closed straw walker keys and high dividers on the shaking board and upper sieve reduce losses on slopes, and high grain purity can be achieved through the use of universal high-performance sieves, including in the basic configuration of the combine.

Full use of all technical advantages is ensured by the presence of a high-tech and comfortable operator workspace. This is key to getting the best performance from your combine.

Massey Ferguson brand equipment guarantees excellent quality of harvested crops, which has a positive effect on profits and preserves farmers’ investments.
