What kind of oil is in the tractor box: choose the right one

The operation of any equipment in agriculture requires the use of oil, and in a device such as a tractor, it is important to correctly select and fill in transmission oil on time. This fluid lubricates the gearbox, steering gear parts, transfer case and axle final drives. The oil is selected according to the characteristics and operating techniques of your tractor model, but you need to choose the transmission type.

The ratio of a substance to a transmission can be determined by marking the letter T on the product. Also, a special standard GOST 17479.2-85 regulates the designation of oil, where in addition to the letter T there are numbers. For example, T-3-1N is characterized as a transmission oil related to group 3 and has a viscosity class 4 (1H).

What does it consist of?

Manufacturers of oil for tractor gearboxes use a composition in which two types of oil are mixed - petroleum and distillate. They are also required to be equipped with additives against scuffing and wear. This ensures better transmission performance and reliable lubrication of all units. Such properties are achieved thanks to additives with a good composition in the form of sulfur, phosphorus, fluorine and molybdenum disulfide.

Regardless of the model and brand, gearbox oil performs two key tasks - lubricates parts and creates optimal heat dissipation.

Depending on the selected oil model, its viscosity is in the range of 6-20 mm2/s when operating at a temperature of 100 degrees. If your tractor differs from the standard one and has open gears, the manufacturer advises using a high-viscosity fluid, which ranges from 50 to 500 mm2/s.

Hypoid oils

If you intend to lubricate the drive axle and hypoid type transmission, it is recommended to select a special hypoid oil. Their main difference is in the additives, the task of which is to create maximum interaction with the lubricating surface and provide protection against scuffing. But tractor operating instructions often prohibit the use of hypoid oils.

It is the oil in the transmission that is responsible for the service life of this unit and, in general, for the performance of the tractor. This is why it is important not to skimp on oil and choose the right products. The recommended oil and its grade are selected according to the printed instructions and the data indicated on the metal plates on the tractor, otherwise your transmission will first begin to malfunction, and then completely fail.

If you fill in oil with a higher viscosity than indicated in the recommendations, the consequences may be as follows: with intensive rotation of the gears, the lubricant will not have time to spread between the interconnected parts, which significantly reduces the efficiency of the transmission and soon it will fail.
