I missed emotions so much, it seemed that it was difficult to surprise me with anything, but here such a familiar, albeit with a different “heart”, but still quite familiar long-lived car made me sincerely worry, in order to eventually feel a ringing feeling joy - the joy of movement!
“Maybe it’s not worth it,” I timidly suggested looking for another place for a good shot. But Volodya, as the test driver of the Gorky Automobile Plant introduced himself to me, was relentless: “If we manage to drive our “lawn” in reverse onto this snow-covered hill, then it will look great, and our short-term labor tandem will leave its mark in the history of factory tests off-road equipment." Well, in the press, of course. “Hill” Volodya called a ten-meter elevation among virgin snow and copses, to which there were only a couple of kilometers of broken tracks and untouched snow plain. The tops of young conifers protruding modestly from the snowdrifts clearly hinted at the depth of the snow cover. “But we’ll be digging for a long time,” I thought, but, on the other hand, when will such an opportunity arise to try the machine in action? Usually, test instructors take care of their equipment and treat journalists with a certain degree of mistrust, and to go to such desperate experiments... When our car triumphantly slid sideways down the fallen hill, and our feet became cold because of the snow in our boots - this is what I photographed - at that moment I fell in love again... life, snow, winter sun, Russian off-road conditions and cars that can overcome it.

The all-wheel drive "Sadko" is a direct successor to the legendary GAZ-66. True, it’s not easy to recognize a relative in a more modern car: the cabin is from an ordinary “lawn”. But any hunter, fisherman, huntsman or soldier, barely glancing at the body rising above the wheels, will instantly determine: this is the same all-terrain domestic all-terrain vehicle. But now with its own, completely new 4.5-liter 135-horsepower diesel engine.

IN THE DIESEL COUNTRY
Yaroslavl diesel YaMZ-530 (at Sadko model 53442) - more precisely, a family of 4- and 6-cylinder engines - was designed and assembled in accordance with all the laws of the global automotive industry. The Yaroslavl residents, whose enterprises now belong to the GAZ Group, immediately set out to build a range of units for a fairly wide range of GAZ vehicles: medium- and large-tonnage trucks, as well as buses. We carried out calculations, created samples and ordered the design refinement from one of the most famous engineering companies in the world - the Austrian AVL.
Design and technical characteristics
The car is built according to the hood design and is equipped with a 124-horsepower V-shaped gasoline engine or in-line 4-cylinder engines with compression ignition, which develop 117-149 hp. The performance characteristics of diesel engines depend on the modification of the installed turbocharger and fuel equipment. All units have a liquid cooling system with forced circulation and temperature control using a thermostat. The electrical circuit of the machines is built on a 1-wire principle, the operating voltage is 12V (for gasoline versions) or 24V (for diesels).
To attach the spring suspension and units, a frame consisting of side members and connecting cross members is used. The machines are equipped with 1 or 2 fuel tanks connected into a single system. The filling volume is 105 liters of liquid in each tank.
Only a manual 5-speed gearbox is used, working in conjunction with a 2-speed gearbox that distributes torque between the axles. The design of the drive axles includes bevel differentials, the front axle is equipped with steering knuckles with constant velocity joints. Chassis modifications intended for the manufacture of dump trucks and fire engines are equipped with a separate gearbox for driving attachments.
Based on the truck, small-scale vehicles are built with increased comfort and improved technical characteristics. An example is the GAZ-3308 Taiga, equipped with a 7-seater cabin and a special van that can be used as a mobile workshop.
Based on a vehicle with 2 axles, a prototype Sadko 6x6 was built, designated “Borulan”. The car is equipped with a 156-horsepower MMZ diesel engine, the rear wheels are mounted on semi-elliptical springs mounted inside the frame. The middle axle is not a through-axle, so 2 cardan shafts are installed to drive the rear wheels.
Sadko
The GAZ-3308 Sadko chassis served as the basis for the construction of several small-scale models of rotational buses. The KaVZ plant built 19-seater cars with an original body that combined a driver’s cabin and a passenger compartment. Other companies mounted separate superstructures on the chassis, isolated from the driver's cab. A separate modification is the KUNG-type army van, designed for transporting military personnel and installing various equipment.
The GAZ-33088 Sadko modification is distinguished by the installation of a YaMZ-534 diesel engine, which provides improved traction and dynamic characteristics. The plant offers standard-sized trucks, as well as a version extended by 1100 mm. The standard equipment includes a centralized tire pressure control system.
Countryman
The GAZ-33086 Countryman flatbed truck has been produced since 2005. The 122-horsepower MMZ D-245 diesel engine, which complies with Euro-4 standards, was offered as a power unit. In early releases there was a 117-horsepower engine that met Euro-2 requirements. The use of engines running on heavy fuel made it possible to reduce fuel consumption to 14 liters per 100 km (at a speed of 40 km/h).
The machine, supplied as a chassis, has a load capacity of 4410 kg, and a flatbed truck allows you to transport 4000 kg of cargo. The brake system includes drum mechanisms with a hydraulic drive divided along the axes. Some GAZ-33086 Countryman trucks are equipped with an anti-lock braking system. The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster, which made it possible to increase the speed on dirt roads. When driving on the highway, a flatbed truck with a full load accelerates to 90 km/h.
Huntsman
GAZ-3308 Jaeger is distinguished by the use of a 2-row cabin with additional hinged doors, designed to carry 5 passengers. The cabin has a length increased by 1150 mm, which has led to a reduction in the dimensions of the platform. The car was equipped with a gasoline engine, developed from Nizhny Novgorod.
Later, a modification of the GAZ-33088 Yeger-2 appeared, created by specialists. The difference was the use of a YaMZ-534 diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger. With a working volume of 4 cylinders of 4.43 liters, the unit develops a power of 135 hp.
Boar
The Vepr truck, created for the army, is based on the Sadko chassis, shortened by 400 mm. The car uses an all-metal body, equipped with 3 or 5 hinged doors. A design feature is the absence of a partition between the driver's cabin and the rear of the cabin.
Seats for passengers are installed along the sides of the body, the central part of the cabin is used for transporting cargo or installing a table. When using a 3-door body, passengers board and disembark through the aft door; a handrail is installed on the outer part. The passenger version of the car has a capacity of 12 people. When used as a cargo-passenger all-terrain vehicle, the cabin has space for 5 people and cargo weighing up to 1500 kg.
Drilling rig
The GAZ-based BKM is used for drilling wells with a diameter of 150-800 mm and a depth of up to 10 m in soils of any category. The small overall dimensions of the unit allow maneuvering in tight passages. The equipment is installed on vehicles with various cabin models designed for 3 or 5 people.
The drilling crane machine is equipped with a mechanical lifting mechanism designed to move loads weighing 1.25-3.5 tons. The design allows you to lift various loads to a height of up to 15.5 m. The machines use outriggers with a hydraulic drive. The GAZ-3308-based drilling rig is equipped with a gear pump driven by a transmission and spool valves that control the operation of additional equipment.

Foreign engineers praised ours for their worthy examples and in a couple of years they literally licked the engine to the best possible condition. Work process indicators are at the level of world giants - Mercedes, Volvo, Cummins. How successfully the fuel burns and how much energy is transferred into work is the most important thing in any engine.
Specific fuel consumption of 200 g/kWh is an excellent value, as is the even, high “shelf” of torque of 42.5 kgf m in the range from 1100 to 1900 rpm. With this characteristic, it will pull the car, even if it is loaded twice as much as it should be. This was one of the customer's requirements.
...and beyond
We get stuck, we shake, but we crawl, and we can’t reduce the speed - there won’t be enough torque, and if we add more, we slip, but still, even if it’s just a gram or a millimeter, we’re still crawling. And why were we given this hill? Oh, yes, testing and photography... If you slow down, you’ll be afraid of stalling, and then you’ll definitely never move again without outside help, if you add, you’ll skid in vain, or worse, you’ll dig in. Where is the golden mean? Go and look... At this very moment, the new modern diesel engine with electronic control shows itself in all its glory: attempts to stall begin only when the speed approaches 500 min-1, and you can safely rev it up to slightly clear the tread of loose snow to the maximum permissible 2300 min-1, and only after a good forty minutes of such cruel cycles, when the transfer case was switched on in a low range, with complete blocking, the warning lamp of the starting overheating of the coolant blinked a couple of times. But as soon as you reduce the load a little and add heating, the temperature calmly drops to a safe 80º. Here it is, the treasured “hill”. Now the long-awaited photo shoot is taking place, and the car is on a smoke break. After such a “special stage”, out of old habit, I want to check the tightness of all threaded connections and the condition of other fasteners. This is our own gas car! But now it no longer stalls at idle, does not choke from lack of torque, does not throw black soot into the exhaust pipe and does not consume tons of expensive fuel. Well done keep it up!

But the old rattling tractor diesel M MZ-D245.7 is not being retired. The “Minsk resident” has his own fans. It has been brought to the level of Euro-4 standards and is also offered for Sadko. The GAZ-33081 model with a Minsk engine is 43,000 rubles cheaper than the new one with a Yaroslavl engine.

In fact, both the installation of the new engine itself and the modernization of products required the factory workers to make a number of design changes. The updated Sadko has a strengthened frame, new double-cone synchronizers in the gearbox, different driveshaft crosspieces, and there are a lot of small innovations. Polyamide pipelines of the fuel system, new power unit supports, the design of the steering mechanism was measured, and a heated filter separator.

The new engine, since it is equipped with an electronic control unit, required, in turn, electronic drives for the accelerator pedal, speedometer and tachometer. The first thing you notice when you get into the cab is that the odometer now has no wheels. And for some reason, once again today I felt warm and good: an old, familiar, one might say, dear car, but in a new interpretation. But the changes did not affect the well-known bent gearshift lever, the steering column is still not adjustable, and the wiring and contacts in some places look like they were made by a schoolboy in a labor class, and even then with a C grade.
It’s okay, everything can be brought to mind, it would be for the sake of it - I have no aversion to this car, even if I flog it! And I am perfectly aware that if it were any, the most shabby “bourgeois,” I would not forgive him for anything like that! And rightly so! The amount that its manufacturers are asking for the new Sadko is a textbook example of the relationship between price and no, not quality, but rather a combination of qualities, a set of capabilities, consumer and operational properties. Now let's go! On the landfill road, virgin lands, country roads, snow, ice, asphalt.

LIVE IN THE FOREST
The last time I rode a “shishiga” was in the mountains of Krasnaya Polyana. Colorful local businesses are thriving there - jeeping, mountain safari. They take exhausted tourists through the mountains and gorges in such a way that they will take your breath away. The 66th is beyond competition. Therefore, when I got behind the wheel of the Sadko, I did not deny myself the pleasure of performing a couple of tricks of the Sochi riders.
The car dashingly takes off onto a sandy hillock covered with half a meter of snow and falls down. “Sadko” throws up a snow bank with its bumper, jumps, confidently stands on its wheels and again vigorously rows across the virgin soil. My companion Lyuba Petrova, an employee of the GAZ development directorate, didn’t even groan. The “Russian roller coaster” here is not as scary as in ’66: a cabin with a hood, you sit behind the front axle and throw it up low.

“For Sadko, these are seeds,” Lyuba smiles and advises rushing into the forest from the edge: on untrodden paths, a four-wheel drive vehicle will be in its element. I dived into the thicket at the first convenient window, locking the center differential and turning on the low range in the RK. The speed fell, but the breakthrough power of the Sadko increased. Cam-type differentials in axles operate off-road in the correct algorithm - the wheels spin in short jerks. When it became really difficult, the only hope was for blocking. I was already thinking about deflating the tires - right from the cabin, there is a powerful centralized inflation - but the engine and well-coordinated transmission managed it without releasing pressure. But there is another great option - a mechanical winch. With this one it’s not scary to get through even a windfall.
Competitors are resting
In addition to the modern engine, the updated Sadko has received a lot of pleasant changes, including a German clutch with a “weightless” pedal and an extremely rare need for adjustment, improved seats with imitation headrests, and a heated filter separator. The cost of such a vehicle, which is truly a full-fledged off-road truck capable of carrying about 2.5 tons of cargo, is a little over one million rubles. There is simply no other similar offer from a domestic, or Chinese, or European manufacturer. Nevertheless, such a temporary “monopoly” will never hide the inherent shortcomings of this car. The main one is that it is a generally outdated design that requires frequent maintenance and constant close attention. It is enough to look at how the electrical wiring is laid in that part that is not related to the new engine. On the other hand, in order to service Sadko, you do not need a high-tech technical center: most of the maintenance operations can be performed on your own.
And yet I loved him precisely for what he is. It’s just that such a car for such a price should be relatively new, then there won’t be any special problems with it.
There are many car modifications
The Sadko is equipped with a two-seater metal cabin with two doors. About a hundred different modules have been developed for these machines. Particularly popular are buses for hunting farms, the gas and oil industries, vehicles with tank trucks, firefighting vehicles and medical vehicles for working in emergency conditions.
The platform of a truck with a regular cab can be made of metal or wood-metal. It is equipped with arches under the awning, and removable grilles can be installed on it. For communication with the cabin, the platform is equipped with an audible alarm.
The Gas 3308 “Eager” car is equipped with a five-seater cabin with the same simple device as the base car. The platform is short due to the length of the cabin. It is designed for transporting various goods. When used for military purposes or for shift workers, such a platform is used for mounting special technological equipment or residential modules. Load capacity of the shortened platform is 1000 kg.
The onboard version of a conventional platform for transporting passengers, in order to protect them on the road from injuries and accidents, is equipped with a safety belt installed above the tailgate. Seats for passengers are in-line, mounted along the side walls. Under the awning, a lampshade is installed on one of the arches to illuminate the platform.
The frame of the Gas 3308 and all modifications of this car is stamped and has front side member extensions. Disc wheels with single-pitch 12.00R tires and pneumatic air inflation.
The new GAZ 3308 Taiga-VIP, which appeared at the exhibition in 2014, has high cross-country ability compared to the previously released model with an extended base of the “Standard” configuration. The modified seven-seater cabin of the new car allows it to be used with modules for various purposes, equipped with additional tools in hunting farms, oil and gas production enterprises, taiga fishing and hunting trips.
The van of the new car is equipped with a ladder that allows you to climb to the roof, where a trunk can be additionally installed for transporting light but bulky cargo. They are loaded onto the roof using a beam crane. The vehicle is equipped with two winches, one from an old GAZ-66. On the GAZ 3308 "Taiga" a diesel generator is installed in a separate compartment, the van is wired for the operation of electrical appliances, lighting and sockets are installed, and there is a separate electrical circuit for the cab and the van. The living module is heated by an autonomous liquid heater, and there is a weapons cabinet in the sleeping compartment of the van.
A dump truck with the possibility of three-way unloading and loading is mounted on the GAZ 3308 base. The carrying capacity of such a vehicle is 4500 kg, the total vehicle weight is 8180 kg. For a dump truck with an electric lift, the vehicle was re-fitted with 8.25-R 20 tires, the wheel arrangement remained the same. The GAZ 3308 dump truck is equipped with a 122-horsepower four-cylinder diesel engine with fuel consumption of 22 l/100 km.

Cabin interior
Surprisingly, the car turned out to be quite comfortable, even in standard configuration. This is partly due to the spacious cabin, which makes it feel comfortable inside. As an additional option, you can purchase a customizable driver's seat, which will make the truck even more attractive.
On the passenger side, the interior does not particularly stand out, there is the same 2-seater sofa, but due to the size of the cabin, it is quite convenient to move around on it
It is clear that the comfort level of the Taiga modification, which has a NEXT cabin, is much better, but this only draws attention to the fact that Sadko does not know the limits of perfection
Inside the GAZ-Sadko 4x4 everything looks utilitarian, extremely simple, but practical. Getting into the car can present some inconveniences, since the cabin is quite high, and the factory does not provide comfortable handrails that you could grab onto. Perhaps even here Gorky’s specialists decided to save money.
For the driver and passenger there are two seats with quite comfortable seats, with soft upholstery and seat belts. It is worth adding that model 33081 is equipped as an additional option with a two-row cabin, which has a pair or four doors.
Modification with a pair of doors - the rear row of seats can be exchanged for a pair of berths, which will make it possible to use the truck for long-distance cargo transportation, or for repair teams where there are remote areas.

GAZ-3308 "Sadko" is a Russian cargo flatbed all-wheel drive vehicle of the 2.5-ton class with a hood layout.
Story
At the end of the 1980s, due to the replacement of the GAZ-66, there were attempts to further unify the production of an existing vehicle. So, in 1990, the GAZ-3301 model appeared, built taking into account the requirements of the military. Also, a distinctive feature of this car was the presence of a diesel engine. However, the collapse of the USSR and the decline in government purchases put an end to the promising vehicle. In view of this, the production of the “shishiga” (GAZ-66) was continued.
However, the development of the new machine continued. Taking into account the relaxed requirements of the military, as well as in view of the practical experience of using a cabin over the engine on the GAZ-66 with all its inherent disadvantages (high danger for the crew in case of a mine explosion, difficulty in accessing the engine, low level of comfort and poor ergonomics in general), and most importantly, due to a sharp reduction in government purchases for the army and the national economy, the plant management returned to the hood layout. The design of the all-wheel drive chassis has maintained continuity.
The first prototype of a new all-wheel drive truck was created by the Gorky Automobile Plant in 1995 under the designation GAZ-3309P. Serial production of the model, which received the industry index GAZ-3308 and its own name “Sadko,” began in December 1997.
In the Russian army, the 2.3-ton GAZ-3308 truck replaced the GAZ-66-40 model with a cab over the engine. The GAZ-3308 uses a modified (different wings with enlarged wheel arches) cabin from the GAZ-3309, as well as drive axles and transmission similar to those used on the GAZ-66-40.
In September 2000, the GAZ-3308 was offered for export to the Ukrainian armed forces.
Since 2003, Sadko has been predominantly equipped with the MMZ D-245.7 turbodiesel (since 2005, Euro-2 environmental class, since 2013 - D-245.7E4, Euro-4 environmental class).
In February 2013, the GAZ-33088 “Sadko” version appeared with a Euro-4 class YaMZ-53442 turbodiesel.
In June 2014, GAZ introduced a new version with the unofficial name Sadko-Next with a lifting capacity of 3 tons, along with a new version of the GAZ-3309.
