In our November review, we concluded that diesel fuel is the optimal solution for the cargo transportation industry. “Searching” for the most suitable diesel engine for medium-duty trucks has recently been one of the key tasks for the “bright minds” of the GAZ Group. Perhaps the recently launched YaMZ-534, which meets the Euro-4 environmental standard, which has been mandatory for manufacturers in Russia since January 2013, will be just such an engine. Since November 2012, this engine has been installed on cars on the GAZ-3308/3309 chassis. We will talk about the technical characteristics of this engine; listing them will allow us to vividly imagine the progressiveness of the new engine. But a dry enumeration of advantages would not be complete without talking about the significance of this event for people, even those far from technology.

Like any other country, our homeland has a past, present and future. The automotive industry is subject to the same laws as other spheres (both material and spiritual). The Soviet Union had a powerful base for the production of auto components. During the Cold War, industry was a serious basis for the security and integrity of the state. Without going into the political background, people are accustomed to thinking that this is how it should be. That’s why it was so psychologically painful for the population of a huge country when, along with the political system, the production system collapsed, new factories stopped being built, old ones were closed. People brought up in Soviet traditions negatively perceive the fact that modern Russia purchases components abroad. Those who grew up in the 90s know about the opposite situation only from history lessons.

Take, for example, the same diesel engines. We are so used to thinking that they “come” to us from Germany, from the USA, from China, wherever, having forgotten that our own production has always been there too, it’s just that at some point it did not begin to be fueled by new ideas and, without “dying” “completely ceased to play any significant role. If we talk specifically about the production of “diesels” in Yaroslavl (after all, today’s review is about the Yaroslavl engine), then the history is more than half a century old: the production of diesel engines in this city began back in 1947, and its own engines in 1958 (V-family shaped, four-stroke engines). The latter, by the way, are still produced to this day. The urgent need for renewal facing modern Russia has led to the fact that today we hear every now and then about the launch of new production facilities. Yaroslavl is no exception: YaMZ-530 (serial production since 2012) is Avtodizel’s first family of medium-sized in-line engines of its own design (at the design stage, specialists from the Austrian engineering company AVL List Gmbh were involved in cooperation.)

Now let's talk about everything in order. Yaroslavl Motor Plant is part of the GAZ Group. The second half of 2012 for the GAZ Group was marked by the active development of the GAZ-3308/3309 medium-duty trucks. Popular trucks received a new YaMZ-534 E-4 power unit, along with the introduction of a number of improvements. The release of commercial vehicles with a new engine is a purposeful step with a “long-range view.” In November last year, the organization of essentially a new plant in Yaroslavl was completed. For the first time in the last 30 years, a new site has begun operating in our country, built specifically for the production of diesel engines of our own design. The enterprise is a modern production complex with the highest (about 90%) level of automation of all operations, which has no analogues in Russia. The plant is equipped with modern progressive equipment produced by famous companies (JW Froehlich, Riko, Carl Zeiss, Grob Werke, etc.). The new production created 1,250 jobs.

The plant's starting capacity is 25 thousand engines per year, and by 2014 this figure is planned to double. The maximum productivity of the enterprise is the figure of 75 thousand produced power units annually.

The new engine will be able (and big bets are being made on this) to successfully compete with foreign analogues, both in the domestic Russian market and in the international “spaces”. This can be judged now. By the time production of the first stage of the new generation YaMZ-530 family of engines starts, the entire batch (50 thousand units) has already been distributed according to orders from automotive industry enterprises (about 20 customers in total). Moreover, the engines will be installed not only on equipment produced by the GAZ Group concern, but will also go to Belarus and Ukraine. The new engines will become the power units of PAZ and KAVZ buses, MAZ vehicles, tractors from most Russian manufacturers, and will be used in light and medium-sized equipment of the defense complex of the Russian Federation. In the foreseeable future, we will enter the international arena (outside the CIS), since foreign partners are already interested in new YaMZ engines. This is so important because in the current economic situation, it is not only revival that matters. It in itself will soon mean little without integration into the global economy.

As for today, using the example of the introduction of a new unit into the design of GAZ medium-tonnage trucks, the opening prospects are clearly visible. Here are just some numbers and data. The new engine fully complies with Euro-4 environmental standards. In addition, it is possible to adapt the power unit to Euro-5 and Euro-6 standards, without any fundamental design changes. The power of the new YaMZ-534 E-4 diesel engine, compared to its predecessor, has been increased by 12.5%, the service life has been extended up to 700 thousand kilometers, the service interval for maintenance is determined at 15 thousand kilometers (first maintenance) and up to 30 thousand km for the second and subsequent maintenance. That is, the motor has become stronger, more powerful, and more durable. The costs of “maintenance” of cars have decreased, and significantly. Factory warranties have also been increased. Now the service warranty is 100 thousand km or 2 years of operation.

In addition to the introduction of a new power unit, improvements to the car affected the frame, electrical equipment, and comfort systems. Detonation and noise in the cabin have been reduced, and the operation of the power steering has been improved.

The high performance characteristics of new YaMZ models and, of course, their competitive price are simply bound to ensure high demand for the engine. To date, all certification and testing procedures have been completed. The Russian government has recognized this project as strategic (in the field of development of mechanical engineering and the automotive industry). So all the prerequisites for successful development are there.

And we like to think that this is just the “first sign”. Perhaps we will soon hear about more and more in-house productions. And doubly positive emotions are caused by the fact that among the “pioneers” is Gorky Auto. Before the New Year, it is customary to make plans for the future. The opening of Russia's own production of diesel engines is an excellent foundation for bringing these plans to life.

Based on the type of cargo body, the GAZ-3309 diesel dump truck is divided into a body with a three-way tip-over capability, as well as a one-way tip-over. The ability to unload cargo on several sides also affects the load capacity.

Power plant, load-bearing part

The GAZ-3309 dump truck consists of a supporting frame on which the power unit and front steering axle are mounted at the front. Closer to the middle part there is a gearbox and a hydraulic pump. Above them is a three-seater closed cabin.

At the rear of the frame there is a drive axle with a cardan drive. A cargo body connected to a telescopic hydraulic cylinder is mounted on the frame.

The D-245 engine, which has proven itself to be a reliable power plant, is mounted on the frame using rubber cushions. The power unit itself is a 4-cylinder, with an in-line cylinder position. The power system is additionally equipped with a turbocharger and intercooler.

The Yaroslavl-made power plant is designated YaMZ-534, it is also 4-cylinder and equipped with a turbocharger, but in terms of volume it is slightly smaller than the D-245, but in terms of power it is stronger.

The frame on 3309 uses a classic spar frame. It consists of two longitudinal spars connected to each other by cross members. It is the load-bearing part and all other parts of the car are attached to it.

The body is a platform with folding sides. It is possible to increase the height of the sides to increase the volume of the body.

The body is secured to the frame with pin-type hinge locks. They also provide the ability to tip the body in three directions. To do this, simply pull out the lock pins on the desired side.

Transmission, hydraulics, suspension

The hydraulic system of the car, which allows the body to tip over, consists of a power take-off box with a hydraulic pump integrated into it. It is installed on the gearbox. Through hydraulic lines, it is connected to a telescopic cylinder, the lower edge of which is fixed to the frame, and the upper edge is connected to the body platform. Oil is drawn from this system from a separate oil tank.

This car uses a 5-speed manual transmission. The torque from it to the drive shaft is carried out by the cardan shaft. The main gear of the drive axle is bevel, hypoid with a gear bevel differential.

The car's suspension is dependent, leaf spring. Shock absorbers are additionally used at the front.

The cabin is sealed, 3-seater, equipped with a ventilation and heating system. The body lift system is controlled from the cab using a lever located in it.

Dump truck GAZ-3309

The GAZ-53 model was replaced by a truck designated GAZ-3307, with a revised appearance and some technical characteristics, but it was still the same truck with an 8-cylinder gasoline unit under the hood, which had significant consumption. A little later, the plant will start producing diesel trucks, which have become more acceptable.

The GAZ-3309, like its predecessor, is a classic truck with a monocoque frame and rear-wheel drive. It differs from model 3307 in the presence of a Minsk-made D-245 diesel unit, which was used on MTZ tractors. Later, version 33098 also appeared - a turbodiesel produced in Yaroslavl. The diesel Lawn is still produced by the Gorky Automobile Plant.

The diesel version of the ZZ09 is produced with several types of body: chassis, regular flatbed cargo platform, all-metal body designed for transporting goods and passengers, and a version with a dump body. A number of special purpose vehicles are produced based on the diesel 3309.

For now, we are only interested in the tipper version, since it is considered the optimal car for rural cars. This version differs from the 3309 with a conventional cargo platform in the presence of a hydraulic body lifting system. But the tipper design affected the size and load capacity of the body.
