The transfer case has a mechanical type of operation. It was created specifically for the ZIL-131 car and is distinguished by the presence of two gears at once. The number of one is 2, and the second is 1. These indicators are more than enough for practical and comfortable operation of transport. Every driver should know how the ZIL 131 transfer case works, because otherwise there may be problems with repairing the box or replacing it if the car suddenly breaks down. The classic version of the ZIL transfer case consists of a large number of elements that are recommended to be considered in more detail.

Features of the ZIL 131 transfer case

The box is held on by four bolts. At the same time, it may seem to most that the ZIL 131 transfer case is a rather complex device. Attach the part in the longitudinal beam to the frame. For this, special rubber cushions and brackets are used, since the fasteners must be of high quality and reliable. Specialists also added a special lever to the ZIL transfer case. It is used so that the driver can easily change gears of the ZIL gearbox. Generally, there are three provisions that may apply.

The following types of transmission are distinguished:

• first;
• second;
• neutral.

The latter is also called medium, but usually beginners get confused in first and second gear; they are used for direct movement or downshift. Many people are concerned about the question: what to do if several gears are accidentally engaged while driving? This will not happen, since the manufacturer has made sure that transfer case 131 works properly. A special mechanism was added to the dispensing design, which prevents double activation. This is usually a ball lock. Quite an effective and practical option.

Very often, drivers drive off-road, which causes the transmission to be significantly overloaded. To make the car drive more smoothly and not suffer from such loads, the developers added a special electro-pneumatic control. As a rule, the ZIL 131 transfer case includes the front axle, thanks to which the car guarantees more comfortable off-road driving. You can make this activation automatic, then the driver will save his time and nerves.

Also, the ZIL 131 transfer case includes the following elements:

• inlet valve;
• front axle switch;
• fork;
• electrical circuit;
• core;
• kernel;
• air valve.

There is also a brake clan, a diaphragm chamber, and a sliding carriage. Without all these parts, the 131 transfer case cannot function properly. Therefore, it is very important to carry out diagnostics and repairs from time to time so that at the wrong time the equipment does not break down right in the middle of the journey.

Problems and solutions

Very often, a breakdown of the transfer case can be foreseen; to do this, you should only inspect the car before leaving the track and listen to the sounds occurring during operation of the mechanisms.

The following problems are possible:

1. Loud noise in the transfer case. This is an indication that some parts are damaged: gears or bearings. In this case, the transfer case is disassembled and the failed parts are replaced;
2. The gears turn off on their own, involuntarily. Most likely, the teeth of the carriages or the small ring gears on the wheels are worn out. Such a breakdown is possible when the gear shift forks are worn out. Damaged parts need to be replaced;
3. Oil is leaking and the membrane is broken. If it is found that oil is leaking through the sealing collars, then you need to carefully inspect them. If, upon inspection, signs of wear are found on the edges, they must be replaced. If the membrane in the pneumatic chamber is broken, then it also needs to be changed;
4. The control rod adjustment is broken and the pins in the rod forks are worn out. In such a situation, the thrust should be adjusted again and the fingers changed.

A little about operation

Since the automatic transfer case ZIL 131 is presented, its device can independently turn on the front axle if necessary, thereby guaranteeing smooth and comfortable movement on any type of road. For example, if a car is driving on a slippery surface, then it is better to use not only the front axle, but also direct transmission. The driver can activate these elements manually or configure them to turn on automatically. It works due to the presence of an electric magnet. Thanks to it, the front axle turns on independently while driving. Sometimes this part breaks due to a short circuit, so it is important to check the electric magnet periodically to avoid such a problem on the road. In general, the ZIL transfer case works properly and greatly simplifies driving on the highway or off-road.

If the driver does not know how to understand whether the front axle is engaged, then he needs to look at what position the handle is in. If the switch is tilted to the left, then no problems should arise, everything works correctly. If the handle is on the right side, then this means that the front axle of box 131 is turned off and does not function. In the event of a short circuit, the bridge lets you know about the problem, since in this case the instrument panel shows that a problem has occurred. A certain light should light up. It is recommended to stop and try to correct the situation; under no circumstances should you try to move on.

Transfer case and oil

This part runs on oil. As a rule, it is poured into the transfer case using special equipment and a filler hole. It is thought out and installed in advance by the developers, and after filling it is securely closed with a plug.

The driver can always see what level the oil is at. If the quantity is exceeded, it is recommended to drain some of it through a special drain hole. There is also a magnet there. If the transfer case is overfilled with some metal particles, then this structural element collects them so that the car owner can eventually remove the metal from the structure. The plugs are fastened securely; at the factory they are additionally strengthened with a special paste that acts like glue. Therefore, the driver should not worry that while driving the plug will fall out, the oil will leak out and the car will stop.

Caring for the ZIL 131 box

If the ZIL 131 transfer case is broken, then only the presence of tools, skills and certain knowledge will help restore it. But many manage to avoid this trouble through proper operation. From time to time it is recommended to check how securely the transfer case is attached to the frame, and how the longitudinal beams themselves are held. Sometimes problems and breakdowns occur due to poor fastening. If parts are loose, it is better to tighten the bolts and check their reliability before traveling a long distance.

It is also recommended to occasionally wash and clean the air channels of the box, the hatch cover, and remove blockages, as they can cause an increased level of pressure in the box. Because of this, the system overheats, receives heavy load and fails. If the oil does not leak, the driver does not forget to change the lubricant in a timely manner, then the ZIL 131 gearbox will definitely last a long time. Sometimes it is worth changing the shims, as they wear out quickly, but cannot be repaired. Only replacement will eliminate the problem and improve the operation of the equipment. It is better to select box parts specifically for ZIL 131, since not every alternative is suitable and works properly.
