Operating instructions

The operating instructions for the DZ motor grader contain a number of recommendations:

    Operation of graders and motor graders

    To ensure high productivity of graders and motor graders, it is necessary to strive to reduce cycle times, that is, work at the highest possible speeds. It is also necessary to achieve an increase in the volume of soil in the prism moved by the blade. However, you should not overload the machine and allow the tracks of the tractor towing the grader or the drive wheels of the motor grader to slip. When the chassis slips, wear increases and time is always lost, and if there is still a need to switch the clutch and gearbox, then the loss of working time becomes excessive and sharply reduces productivity.

    The sequence of work of graders and motor graders during the construction and profiling of dirt roads is the same (Fig. 117).

    During the first pass, the road is divided in width and direction and therefore the first pass is the most responsible; Before the first pass, it is advisable to mark the outer edges of the ditches with pegs, which make it easier for the driver to maintain direction while driving.

    During subsequent passes, the side ditches are deepened and the soil cut out from them is moved onto the road surface. With the last passes, the road surface is leveled (leveled) and profiled, that is, its surface is given transverse slopes (see Fig. 117, 15) to ensure water flow into the side ditches.

    As a rule, graders make circular passes, i.e., during the first half of each pass, they process one side of the Roadway, and during the second half of the pass in the opposite direction, they process its second side. Thus, a dirt road with side ditches is constructed in 15 round trips.

    Typically, dirt roads are built in sections 0.5–1 km long. The longer the section, the less relative time is lost on unproductive turns at the end of passes. The D-144 motor grader constructs from 1.5 to 1.8 km of dirt road per shift.

    Trailed graders and motor graders can be used to build road embankments up to 2 m high from side reserves (Fig. 118).

    The motor grader cuts out sequential layers of soil from the reserves and moves them into the embankment in parallel passes (Fig. 118, a). The work is carried out in the same circular passes as during the construction of dirt roads.

    Road embankments can be constructed by coupling a five-blade plow and three D-20B graders, towed by one S-80 tractor. This construction method was proposed for flat areas by Ukrainian engineers A. A. Karkhov and T. I. Piyarsky and introduced into production by them in 1950. The five-mesh plow and graders (Fig. 118, b) are attached to tractor III with long ropes IV, which are protected from contact with the front wheels of graders by wooden spacers V.

    The plow loosens the soil, and the grader blades, placed in plan at an acute angle to the direction of movement, shift the soil sideways and move it into the embankment. Blades for these works are equipped with extensions.

    The length of such a coupling reaches 30 m, but even with such a length the turn is made with a radius of 20 m, which is quite acceptable in flat areas. The time for turning the clutch in reverse does not exceed 3 minutes.

    Road embankments can be built with single trailed graders, but their productivity is 4-5 times less than the productivity of a five-blade plow and three D-20B graders.

    Embankments and their slopes are planned using a slope planner, as well as a blade carried outside the frame.

    A grader moving along an embankment uses a blade (Fig. 119, a) to level the surface of the roadway and moves the cut soil sideways to the edge of the embankment. A leveler attached to the blade cuts off the unevenness of the slope and throws all the cut soil down to the base of the embankment.

    On high embankments (Fig. 119, b), a second grader with a blade carried outside the frame clears the bottom of the slope, following behind the grader walking along the embankment, and also throws the soil down, from where excess soil is removed to the side by a bulldozer or the same graders . The work is done in circular passes.

    This work can also be performed by motor graders.

    Graders and motor graders excavate and level the trough for the road surface in the finished subgrade (Fig. 120). In this case, the volume of soil removed from the roadbed must be equal to the volume of soil in the roadsides.

    The trough is cut out in circular passes along the road surface. The soil is cut out from the trough and moved to the side of the road; then the sides and bottom of the trough are planned and profiled, giving them transverse slopes for water drainage.

    Planning and profiling of surfaces is carried out with a blade turned at an angle of 50-60° to the direction of movement; in this case, small mounds are cut off, and small recesses and holes are filled with cut soil. This way the surface is leveled.

Graders and motor graders are designed for profiling dirt roads with the construction of side ditches, for the construction of road embankments, dams, shafts from side reserves, leveling of the roadbed, slopes, construction of the roadbed and terraces on steep slopes, as well as troughs in the finished roadbed for the construction of road bases . Medium and heavy graders and motor graders are used for mixing soil and gravel-crushed stone materials with binder additives on the road surface, for constructing and cleaning irrigation canals, as well as for repairing and maintaining roads.

    The working body of the grader - a blade with a knife, located between the front and rear axles of the wheels - can have different settings in the plan and vertical plane, as well as a significant offset to the side, which allows you to perform a variety of work operations for cutting and moving soil and bulk materials (sand , gravel, snow, etc.).

    Light graders for working with tractors should be designed for a traction force of 3-4 tf at a speed of 2-4 km/h, and heavy type graders - for a force of 10-12 tf at a speed of 2-3.5 km/h. Graders are characterized by the length of the main blade: light graders have a blade of up to 3 m, heavy graders have a blade of over 3 m.

    According to the running equipment, graders with metal wheels and pneumatic wheels are distinguished. The advantage of metal wheels is low cost, ease of design and maintenance; disadvantages - low speed (no more than 5-6 km/h). Pneumatic wheeled vehicles can be transported under their own power at speeds of up to 30 km/h. According to the type of control of the working bodies, graders are distinguished with mechanical and hydraulic control.

    Motor graders are classified by weight (the main parameter), the number of wheel axles and the type of wheel arrangement, the control system of the working bodies, the type of transmission and wheel steering control.

    GOST 9420-69 provides for three types of motor graders: light (type DZ-99) weighing 9 tons for patrol and leveling work; medium (type D3-31) weighing 13 tons for profiling, road reconstruction and mixing materials on site; heavy (type DZ-98) weighing 19 tons for road construction and earthworks.
