Car - Baw Tonik December 2010. Chinese. Registered since January 1 (!!!) 2011 - this is probably why there are 3 errors in the VIN code in the PTS.
What condition do you have to be in to register your car on January 1? Mileage - almost 60,000 km. Purchased in Moscow, driven to Izhevsk. He carries mainly polystyrene foam and bean bags (I also have this line of work; we live in more than one taxi).
For a polystyrene foam car, the car is just right - for everything else, its engine (70 hp) is simply not enough.

In general, during the repair it turned out that some kind of radiator tube was leaking - aluminum. The exhaust pipe of the manifold is cracked - it needs to be welded (and this is cast iron!) In general, I cursed, but I began to honestly fix everything: the pipe was welded for 2000 rubles (eprst!), the pipe for the cooling system was successfully ordered in Ulyanovsk. Yes, it’s funny, but a Chinese car in Russia is made in Ulyanovsk!
But you have to drive, so they drained the antifreeze (they saved it, damn it), filled it with water - and the very next day I got behind the wheel and went on business to a neighboring city 90 km away: I had to work, earn some money.
I had not yet reached the traffic police post (it was just a slight uphill climb) when a loud bang was heard from under the seat - and engines on trucks are always under the ass - and then the entire cabin was filled with steam. I parked, swore, opened the hatch... it wasn’t even a “cracked radiator.” He really exploded!
The top part, the plastic part, was torn. The length of the gust is almost 40cm and cannot be restored. To say I'm upset is an understatement. Who knows where to buy a radiator now (Ulyanovsk?), it’s so simple - and in the summer the day feeds the month!
But the most interesting thing is that the radiators have a cap on a spring. And when the pressure increases (and it increased before the explosion), the spring compresses and - like a valve - the lid releases excess pressure. It costs 30 rubles at most. Question: why the hell didn’t it work???

Flaws
Bav Tonic cars, despite their size and purpose, cope perfectly with most of the assigned functions, but have some disadvantages:
- A 1.3-liter power unit is objectively not enough to carry out the maximum possible loads provided for in the technical data sheet;
- The power of seventy horses is also not conducive to full use of the car;
- The power steering does not work clearly enough, which causes some control problems;
- Interior equipment in terms of comfort has been improved compared to previous models, but still requires improvement;
- Delicate and easily deformed loads must be transported very carefully on this vehicle, since the design follows the entire topography of the road in time.

Our market for light-duty trucks is not very developed. For a long time, the hegemon was GAZelle, which, like no other, met the needs of its audience: optimal load capacity, several people can fit in the cabin, spare parts can be bought at any dealership, the cost of purchasing a car is relatively low, and so is ownership.
There was and remains a need for such machines. And with the growth of small businesses, it will probably even increase: these trucks can drive into the city center, they can be maneuvered around the yards. In general, there has been and will be a niche.
The end of the monopoly of Nizhny Novgorod trucks came suddenly: from Asia. First in the form of the super-successful Hyundai Porter, then in the form of Chinese Pepelats of varying degrees of reliability from their ilk. Then, however, larger Chinese players came to this market, whose creations were less reminiscent of the handicraft experiments of vocational school students.

What is typical is that today we have the same faces on test: the second generation of Porter, its related Korean brother from KIA and the Chinese miracle of the Ulyanovsk assembly with the tonic name BAW Tonic. All three have a payload capacity of up to a ton (+/-), single cab, rear-wheel drive.
True, the gearboxes are different: Bongo and Tonic have manual ones, Porter II elite has an automatic transmission! “Koreans” - with a diesel engine, “Ulyano-Chinese” - with a gasoline engine. All three cars are not officially supplied to us, but are imported in relatively small quantities by local importers. We took them for a test at the Berezovsky “Lando”, and rode around the neighborhood there.
Category “B” license is enough to drive, so I drove myself. Such an unusual experience. Considering that I had never driven a truck before. And I only know that their drivers love to listen to Stas Mikhailov loudly in spite of all the traffic jams, and bottles of water must be tightly packed in the back. Okay, let's get inside!
All test vehicles have a single cabin, although there is also a double cabin. This turns out to be a cargo-passenger version. The BAW Tonic is strictly a two-seater. Bongo and Porter have a cabin for three. Or for two, if you lower the folding table with cup holders and a glove compartment inside.
Moreover, both “Koreans” have them. Only KIA for some reason does not close it with a lid.
The curviest interior is that of the Hyundai Porter II. Everything here is the same as in business-class foreign cars of many years ago: wood-like plastic, simple as a log, automatic transmission selector, artificial leather on the seats. Looks really expensive! Especially considering that the car is utilitarian.
KIA's interior looks simpler, but the ergonomics are also impeccable! Almost like a passenger car: clear instrument scales, a neat manual transmission lever, paddle shifters that you don’t need to get used to. The “Koreans” have hard plastics, but good quality. It's a pleasure to sit in both.
The Ulyanovsk truck is generally the strangest. I have never seen such, to put it mildly, original (and, to be honest, crooked) ergonomics even in the ZAZ 968M, adapted for the disabled. How do you like this gear lever and gear shift pattern? I figured it out on the fly and tried it while moving; the sun had already set.
The first turns on itself and to the left, the second - like the first on normal cars... Try to remember this right away and put it into motion!
“Original” is also the parking brake lever of the “poker” system, which sticks out from somewhere in the console and is tightened with the muscular efforts of two hands while both feet rest on the floor! It was tightened, but in order to remove the car from the parking brake, I had to call the car dealership staff for help. Because there you have to somehow pull it back and forth, right and left in a clever zigzag pattern. Overall, weird ergonomics. In the style of “Oh, how difficult everything is!”
The dimensions of all three cars feel good. The mirrors are huge, and Hyundai’s cabin was helped by a “window” in the rear wall, into which you can look over your shoulder. As a result, you maneuver quite confidently. But this is if there is no awning. With an awning, of course, this embrasure will be blocked.
Now regarding the carrying capacity and ease of loading. BAW Tonic has the highest loading height. For KIA and Hyundai it is approximately the same, but still a little high from the ground.
In terms of capacity, they are approximately the same: Hyundai and KIA have a slightly narrower and longer cargo platform, while the Tonic has a wider but shorter cargo platform. But in terms of carrying capacity, the KIA Bongo leads by a tiny margin: 1,000 kg versus 995 for the Hyundai Porter and 990 for the BAW.
Although in Russian conditions these indicators are very relative: our craftsmen can pile at least a ton, at least one and a half, at least two onto the platform - if it is really necessary. Now regarding movement.
All three cars have springs at the rear, so there is no talk of a particularly smooth ride. The main thing is that it can withstand the load. And without her, all three “goats”! They jump on bumps, crawl along a trajectory left and right. You have to be more careful.
In this regard, KIA seemed to be the most “jumping”, BAW - the most rigid and intolerant of the terrain. But this, I repeat, is without load. It is more correct to talk about such machines when they are packed to capacity. There, the swing even on smooth asphalt should be leveled out.
It's hard to talk about fuel consumption. Trucks do not have on-board computers, and the manufacturer, say, BAW Tonic, does not distribute such information. It is only known that it feeds on AI-92m. Hyundai and KIA have the same heavy fuel engine. Judging by the reviews of owners on specialized websites, in the city they consume from 10 to 12 liters of diesel fuel. BAW - 12.8 gasoline. Having poured ourselves under the neck at the Berezovsky Gazprom Neft and grabbed bonuses on the card, we moved on.
KIA has the most high-torque and spirited diesel engine: it rushes up an icy hill like a stubborn little donkey, Eeyore! Working with the clutch and dosing traction is quite convenient: I never even stalled when starting off. The BAW Tonic petrol engine also lacks low-end traction, so the clutch must also be used delicately.
Even a primate can drive a Hyundai with an automatic transmission: two pedals, car-like ergonomics, and a high seating position allow you not to strain yourself to move in space. Of course, there is no outstanding dynamics: there is not very much horsepower, and then some of it “dissolves” in the torque converter. Therefore it is comfortable, but slower than on rivals.
It’s easy to come to a conclusion about which truck is better. This is Hyundai. Or KIA. No, still a Hyundai. Although, what difference does it make. Porter and Bongo are related in everything, including the sensations on the road. Therefore, the difference between them seems unprincipled.
Advice
BAW Tonic is an outsider in this test. Which is not surprising: look at the price list in the tables below.
It is almost 200,000 cheaper than its competitors! And cheaper than the GAZelle Business, which in the “economy” configuration can be found at best for 540 thousand! That’s why you can forgive the BAW and the gearshift lever, which moves in the opposite direction, and the outlandish handbrake, and the weakest engine in the trio. There will be a client for him too.

Based on the Baw Tonik 33463 truck, many modifications were produced with on-board equipment, an awning or an adapted platform for mounting various devices.
