GAZon Next 2022 is a continuation of the legendary Soviet and Russian trucks of the GAZ brand (52, 53, 3307, 33088 and 3309). It was precisely because these models were popularly called “Lawns” that the new truck received the same name. The car is now offered as an on-board vehicle, as well as with an empty chassis where various special equipment (concrete mixers, garbage trucks, large dump bodies) can be installed with a price starting from 2,552,900 rubles. One engine is available for the car, but depending on the configuration it can be naturally aspirated, turbocharged or gas. A manual gearbox is used as a transmission. The model's competitors include the South Korean Hyundai Mighty and the domestic KamAZ-4307. The car is valued for its relatively low price, reliability, practicality and ease of maintenance and operation.

Considering the cost, the machine has excellent technical characteristics. The car's suspension is equipped with anti-roll bars, TENNECO shock absorbers and reinforced leaf springs. The ZF steering mechanism ensures the car's quick response to driver input. In addition, it has a very comfortable small steering wheel with control buttons for the audio system and cruise control. WABCO disc brakes on all wheels make stopping this multi-ton model effortless. The manufacturer claims that the service life of these brakes is up to 200 thousand kilometers.

Under the hood of the car is a 4.4-liter diesel power unit with a capacity of 167 horsepower. But this engine can be equipped with a turbocharger, which increases its power to 210 horsepower. The unit can also be equipped with gas equipment, but then its performance will drop to 110 “horses”. In any case, a five-speed manual gearbox is used as a transmission. Torque is transmitted exclusively to the rear wheels.

The dimensions of the car may vary depending on the selected modification. Length from 6263 to 7960 mm, width from 2755 to 2960 m, and height from 2347 to 2400 mm. The distance between the axles can be from 3770 to 5150 mm. The total vehicle weight is 8.7 tons, but an extended ten-ton LAWN has also recently been added. By the way, in the new version the ground clearance is 207 millimeters, and in all others it is 253 millimeters. In any case, this is enough to transport goods across country areas.

The standard cargo compartment can accommodate up to ten European standard pallets, with a maximum total volume of 23 cubic meters. With an extended body, it can accommodate up to 12 of the same pallets with a total volume of 25 cubic meters. However, there is also the possibility of upgrading to 17 pallets (45 cubic meters). The maximum load capacity is five tons. As standard, the cabin can accommodate three people including the driver. However, there is a modification with a double cabin, which can already accommodate seven people, which allows entire work teams to travel by car.

New Valdai Next: cabover layout, new gearbox and proven engine

During the online presentation, the exclusive distributor of the brand “Modern Transport Technologies Group of Companies” showed the Valdai Next medium-duty commercial vehicle. The gross vehicle weight is 6.7 tons, which allows the GAZ Group to say that its products completely cover the range of gross weights from 2.5 to 10 tons. At the same time, the design of Valdai Next uses components and components of a truck with a total weight of 8.7 tons, which provided the new vehicle with a good margin of safety. ​

Despite exactly the same wheelbase options as the previous Valdai (3310 or 4000 mm), the frame of the Valdai Next is noticeably different from the frame of its predecessor. For example, engineers worked on the front part, on which the cabin rests when tilted, and torsional rigidity was increased due to additional cross members. As a result, the strength of the frame increased by 30% compared to the previous Valdai (thanks to the use of a different steel with a higher yield strength).

One of the main advantages of the new car is the cabover layout. Such a truck is more maneuverable when transporting goods on narrow city roads, its minimum turning radius is 6.2 meters (for comparison: for the Next GAZon with a base of 3770 mm it is 7.3 m, for the Next City GAZon - 6.8) .

Valdai Next is equipped with a 133-horsepower, proven, economical 2.8-liter Cummins ISF diesel engine, its maximum torque is 360 Nm (the same engine on the GAZelle Next produces 330 Nm). This engine comes complete with a new six-speed gearbox developed by the GAZ Group (it has also recently been installed on Gazelle). The maximum speed of the new truck is 110 km/h, which is quite enough for traveling on highways (tests were carried out when fully loaded). Good stability on the highway is provided by new front and rear anti-roll bars.

The cabins are supplied by Foton and are manufactured and painted in China; Subsequently, their production can be established in the Russian Federation at GAZ facilities. The new design made it possible to expand the space for transported cargo while maintaining the same wheelbase size. Thus, the mounting size of the frame became 1.1 meters larger, which increased the volume of transported cargo by 5 cubic meters.

Oleg Deripaska's Gorky Automobile Plant invested 1.4 billion rubles in the development and production of Valdai NEXT. The assembly line was modernized at the plant, a cabin sub-assembly section was organized, modern processing equipment and stamping equipment were purchased for the production of exterior and interior parts.

The Valdai NEXT package is quite rich: the list of new equipment includes electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors, a multimedia system, an on-board computer, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, adjustable driver's seat and steering column, a folding passenger seat with a table, as well as many various niches for transporting and storing small items.

“For the Cummins 2.8 engine, we increased the torque compared to the Gazelle to 360 Nm. In addition to this, they installed a six-speed gearbox with an increased transmission range and selected the optimal final drive in the drive axle. Thus, at this moment our engine is quite comfortable, quite capable of pulling this truck.”

Valdai Next is convenient to use, for example, for delivering groceries or for the needs of housing and communal services. The fuel tank capacity is 125 liters, which is enough for 780 km without refueling. By the way, the tank is locked with a key that matches all other locks of the car.

The truck has an air brake system and disc brakes. The maximum length, taking into account superstructures, in the first case reaches 5.1 meters, in the second - 6.1 meters.

The warranty repair period is three years or 150 thousand km (whichever comes first), and the service interval is 20 thousand km.

During the online presentation, the starting price of the new product was announced - the cost of the Valdai Next chassis is 2,341,000 rubles.

New, necessary, unique, first... This is all great, but now are the times when all these lyrics (by the way, in fact, quite objective) are not very interesting to truck owners. It was about 25 years ago that people rushed into GAZelle cars, loaded them with four tons, turned the springs in the opposite direction, killed them, bought new ones and made money on them again and again. Now everything has changed: both the cars and the trucking business have become different. There are practically no individuals among buyers of small- and medium-tonnage equipment; the main clients are legal entities. And they need one thing from a car - practicality. If a car can make a lot of money, it's a good one. No means bad. It is from this point of view that I would like to evaluate Valdai Next.

The choice of engine is immediately striking. Why was it necessary to install a Cummins ISF 2.8 when some other GAZ vehicles have long been equipped with the excellent Cummins ISF 3.8 engine, which would be more suitable for a medium-duty truck? Well, let's be honest: the 2.8-liter engine is a compromise. Of course, it will be difficult to overtake on the highway with it, but overall it should be enough. And I see at least three reasons why I think the choice of motor is correct.

Firstly

, let's look at the competitors. Take, for example, the same Isuzu ELF 7.5: it seems that the engine capacity there is more serious - 5.2 liters. But there are only 155 horsepower. A difference of 20 “horses” for the pleasure of paying tax on a motor with a power of over 150 hp? Not much fun, to be honest. Especially when you consider that the transport company operates not just one vehicle, but dozens. Taking into account the quite decent dynamics of a truck with a 2.8 liter engine, the choice in favor of the latter is obvious. For those who know how to count money, it is clearly obvious.

Secondly

, but is Valdai’s ability to drive along the track at a speed of 110 km/h really important (although he can do it easily)? It doesn't matter at all. This is a purely urban delivery vehicle, whose task is to transport cargo through cramped streets and courtyards. Everything speaks about this - from the cabover layout to the presence of assistants, which are very helpful in city driving mode.

Third

, the Cummins ISF 2.8 engine has proven itself well on GAZelles, and installing a heavier 3.8 would not only lead to an increase in total weight (and therefore a decrease in maximum load capacity), but also to the installation of a different gearbox. Let me remind you that the new “six-speed” GAZ painlessly handles torque up to 420 Nm, and the 2.8 engine in the version for Valdai produces 360 Nm. These values ​​are very suitable for each other: there is a safety margin for the moment, but it is not excessive. And any redundancy ultimately hits the buyer’s wallet: a car with a more powerful engine and a more torque gearbox (the one that’s worth it couldn’t drive for a long time with a 3.8 engine) would cost much more.

In a word, I have no questions about choosing a motor.

Now let's move on to other points that attract attention.

There’s probably no point in repeating ourselves about the cabin. Developing a new one for a very niche car is unwise. The cabin that was taken from Photon was produced not so long ago and, based on its combination of qualities, looks very attractive. I don't know what's wrong with the Chinese cabin. Well, let's condemn European truck manufacturers for, for example, Hella headlights: it seems like it’s not the case - they install the same thing, they could invent their own. It's possible, but why? If there is a faster and cheaper way, then they should go for it. This is world practice, and I am only glad that the GAZ Group (as, indeed, KAMAZ) is following this path.

A very important point is the possibility of servicing Valdai. As you all know, the territory of Russia is huge, and not everyone is comfortable servicing Asian trucks in the European part, and European cars somewhere beyond the Urals. And GAZ’s extensive dealer network is able to shoulder all the worries about after-sales service for its equipment. True, there is one more subtle plus: in the new Valdai there is practically nothing new that usually causes fear among both buyers and dealership mechanics. The engines and gearboxes are already familiar to them (especially the motors), but there’s really nothing to break in the cabin. And for no reason.

And finally, the pneumatic braking system. For some reason they are silent about this, but such brakes for a medium-duty truck are simply wonderful. If only because it can be used with a trailer.

Finally, I would like to note that the last year has had a very strong impact on the cargo transportation market. Many carriers (even among my acquaintances and friends) were forced to sell their cars. The most popular were five- and eight-ton trucks, which for some reason were disdainful for many. And then it suddenly became clear that there is a very short supply of such cars in urban and suburban transportation. Both CMUs and refrigerators were in demand. I don’t know what will happen to this business next, but medium-tonnage trucks have already helped some people stay afloat once. So there will always be a demand for these cars.

In addition, there is another important question: how quickly can you change your fleet if the market demands it? This has always been difficult to do, especially for our sluggish freight market. Practice has shown that it is very important to have established contacts with those who are deeply interested in solving such problems for carriers - with dealers. And if GAZ dealers manage to not only sell Valdai Next, but also intensively introduce financial services (and they have good plans: roadside assistance with a free tow truck, discounts on maintenance, trade-in, and much more, then sounds like a fairy tale in Russian realities), then everything will turn out well for Valdai. And not only from him, but also from the same GAZelle NN, which we are already waiting for, and from other cars of the GAZ Group.

Options and prices

The 2022 GAZon Next does not have any configurations as such. Model configurations are divided by chassis length. There is a standard, shortened and extended chassis. Also worth mentioning separately is the modification with a double cab and a truck tractor for which a turbocharged engine is available. All other modifications are offered with 4.4-liter diesel and gas engines. It is immediately worth noting that all configurations include the following options:

  • driver's seat with adjustable backrest and headrest;
  • speakers for the audio system;
  • ashtray and cigarette lighter;
  • twelve-volt outlet;
  • cabin filter;
  • radiator insulation;
  • interior ventilation and heating;
  • suspension stabilizers;

  • possibility of connecting a tachograph;
  • ERA-GLONASS;
  • heated side mirrors;
  • open door alert.

Also available as paid options are more comfortable seats, a 2DIN multimedia system with a navigator and USB, a heater, aluminum sides, a tomograph and pockets on the doors.

Standard chassis

This is a standard LAWN, which can be equipped with various special equipment on a cargo chassis or sides. Car length 7225 mm, width 2755 mm, height 2400 mm. The distance between the axles is 4515 mm. A 4.4-liter diesel engine with 167 hp is standard. for 2,552,900 rubles. But it is also possible to install the same engine, but using methane. It has a power of 110 “horses”, but increases the price to 3,502,900 rubles.

Shortened chassis

In this configuration, the car has a length of 6263 mm and a wheelbase of 3770 mm. The width and height of the machine are 2755 and 2400 mm, respectively. Prices are absolutely identical to the previous configuration.

Extended chassis

In this configuration, the length of the model is 7960 mm, width is 2755 mm, and height is 2400 mm. The wheelbase is the same as in the standard chassis - 4515 mm. In this configuration, only a naturally-aspirated diesel power unit is available. The price of the model is 2,799,900 rubles.

Truck tractor

The car is made on the basis of a shortened chassis. Therefore, its wheelbase is the same - 3770 mm. However, the overall dimensions differ. This configuration fully matches the dimensions of the model with a standard chassis. The car features an additional row of seats. The total number of places is seven. Three-ton Valdai Next with Foton cabin: declassified!

You can’t hide an awl in a bag: apparently, spy photos that suddenly leaked onto the Internet prompted the GAZ Group to declassify the main Nizhny Novgorod novelty of this year - Valdai Next. It will take place between the heavy Gazelle Next (its total weight is 4.6 tons, load capacity is 2.2 tons) and Lawn Next (8.7 tons, load capacity up to 5 tons). The total weight of the new Valdai is 6.7 tons, and the chassis is designed for a payload of 3.7 tons: taking into account the presence of the body, it will be a full-fledged three-ton truck.

When I saw pictures of a prototype on Instagram, taken on the sly with a mobile phone in the workshop, I couldn’t believe my eyes: maybe it was Photoshop? After all, we are used to the fact that all the latest GAZ (and Ural) models have a unified Next cab, but here we have an Asian-style cabover cab, on the side of which a nameplate with two names is glued - GAZ and Foton. But it turned out that everything is so: Valdai Next will indeed receive a Chinese Foton cabin. It will improve the maneuverability that trucks need in cities and increase the length of useful cargo space by 800 mm.

By the way, the cabin, along with the headlights, bumper and even the cladding, was borrowed from the Foton Ollin CTS model, which debuted in 2016, but is not sold in Russia: from the outside, the Valdai Next differs only in the emblem! Moreover, the Hyundai Mighty trucks, sales of which should begin this fall, have a similar design. Chinese, Korean and Russian are brothers forever...

I can already see comments from readers: “We can’t do anything ourselves!” But it is clear that developing a cabover cab from scratch, testing it, creating stamps, preparing for production, etc. would entail huge costs - both time and money, especially in the current difficult financial situation. Firstly, our sales volumes of cars of this class are such that such expenses simply will not pay off. Secondly, a spoon is dear to dinner, especially now that KAMAZ is hot on its heels: it announced the imminent start of production of a cabover delivery truck codenamed Compass (as they say, also with a cab from China), and space is already being freed up for it press-frame plant. Finally, this niche is traditionally occupied by Asian cabover trucks: this is primarily the Hyundai HD78, as well as Isuzu, Hino, Fuso, and the same Foton. And against their background, Valdai Next looks quite harmonious.

By the way, after the editorial tests of Fuso in 2014, we published a copy of a letter signed by the head of KAMAZ Sergei Kogogin: back in 2012, he requested from Foton the possibility of annual purchases of up to 6,500 Foton Auman and Aumark cabs (still of the previous model) for promising KAMAZ trucks. True, they were heavier than Valdai Next, weighing 8-10 tons. Their production was supposed to begin in 2015, but nothing came of that project. But now GAZ has picked up the baton.

So, the cabin is Photon, but where does everything else come from? The engine is a Chinese-made Cummins 2.8 turbodiesel, very familiar to gazelle enthusiasts, which has proven itself very well. According to technical center employees, the engines run smoothly for several hundred thousand kilometers, provided they have good fuel and regular maintenance. In addition, this is the engine that powers the original Foton trucks, from which the cab was borrowed - an ideal solution, and no adaptation is needed! True, the Ollin CTS is also equipped with a larger Cummins 3.8: will the Gazelle engine be enough for Valdai Next?

The gearbox is GAZ, and the one that Gazelle drivers have long dreamed of - a six-speed! As the creators assure, this made it possible to achieve good efficiency, ensure transmission of torque up to 360 Nm... Let's add - and reduce noise when driving.

Well, the other component base (frame, drive axle and front axle, suspension, brake system, steering) is unified with its “big brother”, Lawn Next, which has also been produced for several years, not only as a truck, but also as a chassis for bus Vector Next. By the way, the brakes are disc on all wheels, with ABS, EBD (brake force distribution system) and even ESP. True, judging by the available technical characteristics, Valdai Next will be several hundred kilograms heavier than the similar Photon with a similar carrying capacity. But it’s no secret that gas components of the chassis are specially made powerful, designed to withstand heavy overload. And since they are from Lawn Next, it will be possible to ship Next to Valdai... No, no, we didn’t say anything.

Photos of the interior have not yet been made public, but we can assume that it is generally the same as that of the Foton Aumark model (which is sold in Russia and is stylized as a Mercedes on the outside) or the same Hyundai Mighty - with excellent visibility and a short gear lever. Among the features announced by GAZ are efficient heating, electrically adjustable and heated mirrors, and LED running lights. On request - air conditioning, pre-heater (apparently, like the Gazelles, this is Webasto) and a fairing on the roof.

Yes, this is no longer the old Valdai! I am very familiar with that model: I drove it back in 2005, when it first came off the assembly line. For that time, Valdai was a logical replacement for Zilov’s three-ton Bullocks, but by today’s standards it is already outdated: the cabin is from the previous Gazelle, the diesel engine (MMZ D-245, and then Cummins 3.8) rattled loudly, the loading height is high... Nevertheless, in its At the time, a variety of options were produced at the Valdai base - from tow trucks to special vehicles.

For example, this chassis is used by the Federal Penitentiary Service for paddy wagons: they are designed for 15 “special contingent” people. In addition, the Research Institute of Special Equipment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs created the Groza water cannon at the Valdai base. But, according to our information, the matter was limited to a couple of copies built at the Vargashinsky plant (one was tested, the other is on duty near Moscow, in the Zubr riot police). The fact is that the truck is quite vulnerable to demonstrators due to its small size and the volume of water in the tank is small. And civilian cars have not really taken root in cities: they are too big, noisy... Old Valdai was discontinued in 2015, when the Next City Lawn came to the market.

And now - Valdai Next. Will it become popular? With competent marketing and price positioning - for sure: most of the components are well known on the market, there are plenty of spare parts (and inexpensive ones), dealers and company stores too. As for the price, the Hyundai Mighty is unlikely to be a competitor: a similar EX6 model will cost under three million rubles. But the Foton Aumark (we repeat, with the same Cummins 2.8 engine, but with a ZF five-speed gearbox) is much cheaper: the chassis costs from 1 million 729 thousand rubles. And if the GAZ team manages to make the price lower or the terms of purchase more attractive, the car will work! The first prototypes are already rolling off the assembly line, and the start of serial production is scheduled for this fall.

One thing is a pity: such GAZs will now look like purebred “Chinese”. But here, as they said in Odessa regarding cleaning shoes with toothpaste for lack of cream: “Shoes will be like Aunt Sonya, and Aunt Sonya will be like shoes”...

Safety

GAZ cars have never had a very high level of safety. This is a work car that is valued for its other characteristics. Nevertheless, the 2022 GAZon Next has basic options for active and passive safety, including:

  • large side mirrors;
  • long windshield wiper blades with washer nozzles built into them;
  • braking system with ABS, ASR and EBD.
  • programmable cab removal zones;
  • seat belts.

Also worth noting is the head optics with daytime running lights, which automatically turn on when the engine starts. Moreover, there is a headlight range adjustment control. The car has never been and will never be crash tested. But if it had appeared, for example, at Euro NCAP, the results most likely would not have been the best, given such a modest set of security options.

Handling and off-road performance

The car has large dimensions and therefore there is no need to talk about any super maneuverability. However, this is a truck and a priori it should not have this characteristic. Nevertheless, the truck has a good steering mechanism, which will allow you to not strain yourself while driving this vehicle. Of course, this is not a luxury sedan or even a budget runabout. However, in comparison with older models of the domestic company, GAZon Next is much easier to drive. In addition, the car has reliable disc brakes, a strong suspension and an unpretentious engine. The minimum turning radius with a standard chassis is 8.5 meters. The car's fuel consumption is from 13.6 liters per hundred kilometers.

The 2022 GAZon Next is a truck. Models are not equipped with an all-wheel drive system. Torque is transmitted exclusively to the rear wheels. Therefore, you should not drive this car into serious off-road conditions. Nevertheless, the “decent” ground clearance (253 millimeters) allows this car to be driven on a country road, where it is used very often. The car can still cope with small holes and puddles of mud. However, if you drive off the road, there is a high probability that you will need to call a tractor for towing.

Advantages and disadvantages

This car is in very good demand in our country. Moreover, it is bought not only by companies, but by ordinary people for their own purposes. Therefore, the LAWN must have advantages. So, the main advantages of the model include:

  • relatively low fuel consumption;
  • three-year warranty;
  • more than 20 thousand kilometers between services;
  • low cost of ownership;
  • cheap spare parts;
  • eight years warranty against perforation corrosion.

Since this is a budget car (for its class), it also has some disadvantages. Most often, GAZon Next owners complain about the large turning radius, small fuel tank volume, low speed (maximum 106 km/h) and poor quality of interior trim.

Design

The car has its own individual design, which is not similar to other GAZ models and even to the Next series cars. The car has a massive cabin, especially in the two-row configuration. There are straight and even angular lines throughout the exterior. The designers completely deprived the body of exaggerated and smooth transitions.
