ISUZU tractor unit with 6x4 wheel arrangement - EXZ51K

Giant abyss

I adjusted the seat and the steering column slightly upward and towards you - you can go. I start the engine and understand that not only the strait separates us from Japan. Judging by the way the engine rustles, there is also a time gap between us. He doesn't even rustle, he whispers. In the cockpit, when the diesel power unit is running, you can hear a fly fly by. It is a fact! Before setting off, I left the cab and stood outside for several minutes, listening to the operation of the power unit. Fantastic! Some 360 hp were removed from a working volume of 14 liters, but a torque of almost 1500 Nm is achieved at 1100 rpm. To comply with Euro 3 standards, electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation and ultra-high pressure fuel injection systems are used. Intercooler, turbocharger with variable geometry - it’s simply hard to believe that a complex design can work like that. I will take the liberty of saying that even European engines of similar volume make much more noise.

Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to load the Japanese dump truck, so it was limited to driving with an empty truck. An interesting feature of the Japanese engine is its operation at low speeds. This can partly explain the low noise level of the engine. Idle speed is kept at 800 min-1, but there is an adjustment key with which the driver can increase or decrease the idle speed. For an electronically controlled motor, this is at least strange. The turbine starts working only at 1100 min-1, and the torque peak occurs at this mode. Then the engine revs vigorously up to 2200 rpm... and, in fact, that’s it! The tachometer needle freezes at the last mark, and a sound signal sounds, notifying you that the speed can be reduced or switched to the next gear. Thus, the turbocharger operates at half the scale of the engine speed ranges. It turns off only at idle and in the first seconds of start. The rest of the time, the turbine works actively, which has a positive effect on the dynamics of the truck: when you press the gas pedal, the car responds with vigorous acceleration.

The six-speed gearbox does not evoke any emotions. It is absurdly laconic: the stages are “cut” with mathematical precision, the clarity of the inclusions is worthy of Japanese technology, there is no desire to overclock the engine. It's just that the lever strokes are too big for a modern car. I would like to put a joystick here. But, as you can see, the Japanese have already had enough of electronics and do not intend to complicate the design where there is no urgent need for it.

Isuzu CYZ is standardly equipped with ABS and an engine brake. The joint work of these systems gives amazing results. It's joint. Whenever you press the brake pedal, both the drum brakes and the mountain brake are activated by default. Naturally, provided that you are moving in gear. The test took place on snowy, slippery roads, so we were able to fully experience the effectiveness of such a design solution. Even with sudden braking, the car maintains straight motion and quickly reduces speed. When descending a mountain, the engine brake can be applied forcibly. The efficiency of its work cannot be compared with its Chinese counterparts. When you press the gas pedal, the exhaust brake is automatically released. You take your foot off the pedal and the engine again prevents the car from accelerating.

Another feature of the truck deserves attention - excellent maneuverability. From lock to lock, the steering wheel makes 6.5 turns. This is a bit much. But the turning radius of a three-axle vehicle is very small. Maneuvering the Isuzu CYZ is a pleasure. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that a dump truck can fit into a space a la the “eye of a needle.” But footprints in the snow dispel all doubts.

Isuzu CYZ chassis

The Isuzu C Series cabover truck chassis with high payload capacity can be used in the most severe operating conditions. The wheel formula of this chassis is 6x4. Its four-stroke six-cylinder engine has direct fuel injection and is water-cooled, turbocharged with intercooler. Average fuel consumption per 100 km. is 35 liters. This chassis has a pneumatic dual-circuit brake and an anti-lock braking system.

Isuzu CYZ51K trucks

The Isuzu CYZ51K tipper chassis with a cabover layout is designed for use in difficult conditions. Wheel formula 6x4. Its four-stroke six-cylinder engine is economical. It has direct fuel injection, turbocharging with intercooler and water cooling. The engine power of this dump truck is 360 horsepower.

The advantages of the Isuzu CYZ51K chassis include:

  • high load capacity and good maneuverability;
  • excellent performance;
  • increased security;
  • excellent braking system with anti-lock braking system and pneumatic dual-circuit brake;
  • ergonomic cabin;
  • reduced fuel consumption.

Rely on the Japanese...

A few words about car maintenance. The power unit with an electronic injection system and gearbox is serviced exclusively at branded service stations. The driver is only entrusted with checking the engine oil level. The dipstick is located under the front grille, next to the oil filler neck. In short, nothing new. But the fact that a high-tech engine has a manual fuel pump is nonsense!!! I have never seen such a miracle on Euro 3 power units. In an internal combustion engine, where electronics are responsible for everything, manual pumping is required. It is difficult to imagine how such a pump could work. Next to it is a plastic box with a lid in which electrical wiring connectors are collected. Very comfortably. There is a sense of concern for the consumer. And it’s little things like these that create the impression of a car. The air filter is equipped with a contamination indicator - another nice touch. The driver is also entrusted with pumping the dump truck. The tool kit includes an oiler. They say that after-sales service is good, but self-lubrication is also welcome.

The real drawback is the small fuel tank. In the basic configuration its volume is 200 liters. A more or less decent 400-liter tank must be ordered additionally. The powerful unified frame, which is installed on dump trucks with a gross weight of both 26 and 40 tons, has a large margin of safety. The height of the double spar is 320 mm, width is 90 mm. But this solution also has a downside: the chassis of a standard three-axle vehicle is very heavy. This means the carrying capacity is reduced.

Asian is different from Asian!

The car leaves only positive emotions. Ease of operation comparable to a light-duty vehicle, high level of comfort, precise and coordinated operation of all components and assemblies, and so on. Indeed, in some aspects Isuzu even surpasses its European counterparts. From the outside everything is just great...

There is only one thing left: the price of the issue? And a similar car in its basic configuration costs just over 3.1 million rubles. Is the consumer ready to pay so much for reliability and quality? Until three Chinese dump trucks can be bought on the market for that kind of money, it will be very difficult for the Japanese and Europeans to fight for the consumer’s wallet.

Thank you for providing the dump truck for testing.

Chassis Isuzu NMR85L and NLR85A (700P generation).

Innovative technologies and modern design solutions were used to create these chassis models. As a result, comfort was increased and a high level of driver safety was ensured. Easy access to the NMR85L and NLR85A units provides excellent aerodynamics for forward tilting cabs. The trucks are equipped with powerful diesel engines that meet all Euro 3 standards.

The Isuzu NL platform is one of the most popular on the market

The dynamic NLR85A engine maneuvers well even in the densest city traffic and is perfect for frequent loading and unloading in a small area. The universal frame can be used to install various types of vans, flatbeds, tow trucks, CMUs and other superstructures.

The NMR85L mid-size chassis is designed to withstand the harshest conditions. It is adapted for Russian roads. The cabin and suspension can withstand heavy loads and are protected against corrosion. The design and shape of the A-pillars allow the door to the cab to be opened 90 degrees.
